Spoek Mathambo/Nthato Mokgata is a musician and filmmaker. He's a master of collaboration, with roots tracing all the way back to the seminal The Fantastic Kill with Watkin Tudor Jones and Sibot, which lead to projects like Sweat.X, Playdoe, Moleke Mbembe, Fantasma, Batuk, and his most recent collaborations with Laliboi. I'm definitely leaving some stuff out, and that's not even to mention his personal catalogue of albums, but the point is that the man has kept himself busy. Not just with making music. In 2014, he worked on a documentary called Future Sound of Mzansi that is, to this day, one of the best explorations of South African electronic music. He's worked on a number of documentaries before and since, and has delved into a number of facets of filmmaking. Most recently, he was a writer and director for the "Surf Sangoma" episode of Disney's Kizazi Moto animated anthology series. We get into all of the above as well as learn about some of the pitfalls of working with international labels, explore the benefits and hurdles of modern music distribution, and discuss why he feels like there are still musical magic tricks from SA music history that haven't been explored fully. Enjoy. Dance music from the Latin diaspora is making waves into the European scene – but who's really profiting from the boom? This week OttO Kent talks to the Venezuelan writer and deputy editor of Crack Magazine Rachel Grace Almeida about the long-overdue attention that Latin American artists are getting, and why it's problematic to lump all these artists and countries into one box. Plus: Bad Bunny speaking out against queer baiting accusations, Chioma Nnadi as the first black woman to lead British Vogue, Brian Eno calling out James Blake for using the asshole chord, and a new Spotify feature that sounds a lot like payola. Jumping Back Slash is a rather prolific producer and sound engineer who calls Knysna, South Africa home after originally being from a small town in Wales and spending his youth in the London music scene. JBS has had a long career in the entertainment industry but he's currently loving living out his "late-era Kate Bush" life, creating music in his studio far from the reaches of city life and music scenes. This conversation truly goes all over the place as JBS and I work through the last decade (and more) of his career here in South Africa whilst also sharing many, many opinions on "The Industry" and what it means to make and consume original music in these oversaturated and overstimulated times. We talk about our mutual love of Spoek Mathambo and how instrumental he was in JBS's career, and we also get into how important it is to connect and work with people who are on a similar wavelength. I know I always say this, but, there's A LOT to be learned from this one. Enjoy. Shamon Cassette first landed on our radar with Wave Crusher, the brilliant Afro-futurist electro-rap mixtape he made with Spoek Mathambo. He's back in Brooklyn now, but his experience in South Africa led him to create this exclusive mix for Afropop, which starts with a previously unreleased track from the Wave Crusher sessions. Here's Shamon on "A Mix of Things Nonrelated": "This year, a few months back I maxed out my tourist visa in South Africa and really had the blessings to adapt and become closer and in tune with what was going on in the southern region first hand. When i got back to Brooklyn I was asked by Afropop Worldwide to make a playlist of current songs and artist that inspired or caught my attention during the process. Here it goes." TRACK LIST: 1. 44100Hz - Best Russian Djs

Official?

Part of a new breed of African artists, 24 year old Spoek Mathambo (Rapper/DJ and Graphic Designer/Illustrator) is hitting the world hard with his take on Afro-futurism. Spoek sees himself as a part of a new wave of energy in Africa, which is intent on nurturing a sense of progressiveness while maintaining a pride in culture. As front-man for electrorap outfits SWEAT.X and PLAYDOE, Spoek Mathambo has become a increasingly prominent figure in the international music scene over the last couple of years. Most recently, Spoek Mathambo has finished recording his solo album, "Mshini Wam" for BBE, and has built a live band (which includes two dancers) in order to tour the project.
