An enormous fifty-year-old ocean liner, the SS United States, is set to be sunk and become the world's biggest artificial reef, off the coast of Florida in the US. The area already has over 500 artificial reefs. These are manmade structures that may mimic some of the characteristics of a natural reef. The people behind it say it'll improve biodiversity, local tourism and fishing. And it's not just old ships; people have sunk oil rigs and subway carriages. They don't always have a positive effect; in the 1970s two million tyres were dropped into the ocean to try to create an artificial reef (also off the coast of Florida), but they released lots of toxins. Climate and science reporter Georgina Rannard explains how ships like this get turned into artificial reefs and whether old ships are good for marine life. We talk about other kinds of artificial reefs and ask what benefits they can have for our oceans.Archive courtesy of British Pathé and CBS News. As the SS United States made its way to Mobile recently, one local woman took a trip down memory lane. At the age of 8, Lynn Counselman and her mother had returned from England on this ship, and as she watched the ship, fond memories flooded her thoughts. “I had never told my children about my experience,” Counselman said. “When I saw the ship coming to Mobile, I shared my story. My children and grandchildren were amazed!” Counselman's amazing story began when her father, Bill Ricketts, was stationed in London with the Navy. He married her mother, Jayne Grimly. Hostus Maximus and sometime savant Justin Fort goes full brain-dump on the kind of history that makes pre-teen kids deep-dive science for all the wrong reasons. Obviously, when folks die because a ship full of ammonium nitrate or radical WW1-era explosives goes kablooey in the harbor, it's a damn shame, but you can't help but marvel at the sheer magnitude of serious industrial accidents (be they jet fuel, fertilizer, munitions or just leftover mine gas). It's not just manmade disasters, though - Mother Nature (or Father Nature? Turnabout and all...) has a pretty good market for things that go BOOM too, like whole mountains and entire islands. Join the show for an hour of train-of-thought goodness (and a reminder that mailboxes are federal property, "because you can" doesn't always mean you should, and if you want to blow stuff up, go pro and do it for a living). To max out the spicy, we've got the mine in Mike's basement, the legitimacy in Stephen King's short stories ("Langoliers" and "Night Flyer", for instance), some WW2 in Europe and the Pacific, submarines & "Das Boot", the return of the D2HIE1WHCII rule, and enough Monster Magnet to explode a horse.
Send us a textThe SS United States once sailed mightily across the Atlantic. She set the transatlantic sailing speed record , which still stands today, only using 2/3 of her power. She was once majestic, powerful, and one of the most luxurious vessels of its time. But time has passed. The jet airplane cut transatlantic travel from days to hours. The need for such sea faring vessels disappeared and with in just a few short years the SS United States was mothballed, her furnishings sold, her interior gutted, and she sat at port for a half century as the elements took their toll. She is now headed for Florida to become an artificial underwater reef. A project that will almost certainly rejuvenate life into this lonely vessel at the bottom of the sea. As we commemorate the SS United States historic place on the high seas and watch her slow sail from Philadelphia to Mobile, Alabama to be prepared for sinking. We thought now was a perfect time to reflect on it all as we watch her final sail before she sinks into history and moves on to its new chapter under the sea. Last year, 9,000 deceased donor kidneys were discarded due to storage and time limitations. A kidney “life support” machine could change that. Also, the SS United States will join Florida's 4,300 artificial reefs—human-made places for fish and other marine life to live. How do these reefs work? The Effort To Save Thousands Of Donor Kidneys From Being WastedSylvia Miles was diagnosed with lupus in 2006, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the body's immune system to attack healthy tissue—including her kidneys.Miles, who lives in Indianapolis, was later diagnosed with advanced kidney disease, and was in need of a kidney transplant.Kidney diseases are one of the leading causes of death in the United States with 37 million people living with chronic kidney disease. Together with advanced kidney disease—the later stage of CKD—it cost Medicare billions of dollars in recent years.People like Miles, who need a kidney transplant, wait an average of five years—often on dialysis. But despite the long waitlists and organ shortages, around 9,000 kidneys from deceased donors last year were discarded due to perceived issues with their viability. A new Indiana-based organization, 34 Lives, is working to limit that waste and rehabilitate the organs.Read the rest of this article on sciencefriday.com.Ocean Liner SS United States Will Become An Artificial ReefThis week, after a notable career, the SS United States, a 1950s ocean liner, took her sunset cruise. Like many retirees, the ship is heading south—from Philadelphia to Florida—where she'll be reinventing herself. In this next chapter, the SS United States will have new passengers: fish and other marine creatures. The ship will be sunk to the bottom of the sea and turned into an artificial reef, joining more than 4,300 artificial reefs off the coast of Florida.Other sunken ships have become artificial reefs in the past, which have helped boost marine life as well as scuba diving and fishing tourism. Host Flora Lichtman speaks with Scott Jackson, a regional specialized agent with the Florida Sea Grant and University of Florida IFAS extension, about the science behind artificial reefs, and what has been learned from decades of research.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. And there's nothing like her left anywhere. And we are working so hard to save her, “said SS United States Conservancy President Susan Gibbs. In June, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania ruled the historic vessel would have to find a new home. The legal battle began when the SS United States landlord, Penn Warehousing, increased the rent in August 2021. Shortly after, Penn Warehousing terminated the lease in 2022, and the lawsuit was filed. “It simply was to get us off the pier. And we never intended to stay at the pier indefinitely… In hindsight, we wish we had an opportunity to negotiate with the landlord and in good faith and talk about what's involved in removing the ship from the dock. But, it certainly is not a short term effort to be able to quickly put that together, but we are working on it nevertheless to find a temporary home warrant, “said SS United States Conservancy board member Warren Jones. The SS United States has until Sept 12, to find a new home. WITF has reached out to Penn Warehousing for a interview or statement regarding this matter. As of now, we have not yet heard back yet. However, if we do, we will update this article accordingly.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

/Christopher & Patrik
Docked across the street from the Ikea in South Philly is a giant rusty ship called the SS United States. It was once a luxurious ocean liner, carrying movie stars and former U.S. presidents across the Atlantic Ocean. Think the Titanic — but bigger. However, since 1996 it's been languishing in Philly. Host Trenae Nuri speaks with Ximena Conde, breaking news and general assignment reporter for The Philadelphia Inquirer, about new plans to redevelop the SS United States and legal issues the ship's owners will have to navigate to keep it afloat. Read Ximena's full story here. Want some more Philly news? Then make sure to sign up for our morning newsletter Hey Philly. We're also on Twitter and Instagram! Follow us @citycastphilly. Dr. Spence is an internationally known expert on shipwrecks and sunken treasures. His bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies was perhaps the first accredited academic degree ever awarded in the United States for any program in marine archaeology. He also received one of the first five doctorates (Doctor of Marine Histories, College of Marine Arts, 1972) ever awarded for marine archaeology anywhere in the world and he has long been considered one of the founding fathers of marine archaeology. His work has been funded by such institutions as the Savannah Ships of the Sea Museum, CRIL (the Caribbean Research Institute Ltd., Colombia, South America), the College of Charleston, the South Carolina Committee for the Humanities, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. In the early 1990s he served as Chief of Underwater Archaeology for Providencia Y San Andres, a 40,000 square mile archipelago in the Western Caribbean. He has authored more than two dozen books, and has served as an editor for a number of nationally distributed magazines. He is also an award winning cartographer and has published a number of maps and charts dealing with shipwrecks and treasure.Always an adventurer, Spence has traveled to a wide range of exotic places in the Far East, Europe, Central and South America. He has explored castles, palaces, shipwrecks, ancient ruins, secret tunnels, and subterranean and underwater caves. He has dived in the Great Lakes, the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. He has been shot at, buried in cave-ins, tangled in fishing nets, pinned under wreckage, run out of air, lost inside a wreck, and bitten by fish while pursuing his quests.Although Dr. Spence has discovered numerous historically significant shipwrecks, including the Civil War blockade runner Georgiana and the Confederate submarine Hunley, he hasn't only made discoveries underwater. He considers his identification of Charleston born banking and shipping magnate George Trenholm as the “Real Rhett Butler” to have been his most interesting non-shipwreck discovery. Trenholm's fleet of fast steamers earned today's equivalent of over one billion dollars running munitions, medicines, and merchandise through the Federal blockade. By the end of the Civil War, Trenholm was a major figure in the Confederate government. The United States actually charged Trenholm with treason and claimed he had made off with and concealed hundreds of millions in Confederate assets. Trenholm died without revealing his secrets. Spence is currently trying to uncover them. The State of South Carolina's claim of ownership to the Civil War submarine Hunley was based on Spence's 1970 discovery of that vessel and his subsequent gift of his salvage rights to it to the State. Spence's gift of his rights was made in September of 1995 at the official request of the Attorney General of South Carolina and the South Carolina Hunley Commission. In 2013, Dr. Spence announced his discoveries at Cape Romain of the 1894 wreck of the SS Ozama and the 1881 wreck of the SS United States. As an historian, Spence believes the biggest key to success on any expedition is the archival research that precedes it. Spence calls historical research “his drug of choice” and says, “In today's world, time is the most expensive part of a salvage expedition. Man-hours spent in the archives can cut hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of time from the field phase of most projects.”
The SS United States is about as unique and incredible as it gets: an entire ocean liner that's larger than the Titanic, out of use since 1969 and moored in Philadelphia since 1996. Both the fastest liner ever built and the largest constructed on US soil, it's one of only two surviving relics from the entire age of passenger liners, and yet its future has been imperiled for decades and it seems like its time might finally be running out. We'll explore why the SS United States is so significant and meaningful, the desperate efforts to save it, and what it's like touring a ghost ship that ceased operations long ago and on which only echoes remain. Our 'Iconic Ships' series continues with the magnificent SS United States, published on the 70th anniversary of her maiden voyage. Launched in June 1951 she was the last remaining American superliner from the golden age of transatlantic travel and was built specifically to break the transatlantic speed record. On her maiden voyage she made the transatlantic run in just three and a half days. To this day, she still holds the trans-Atlantic speed record: no other passenger ship has crossed the Atlantic faster in either direction. Not only built for speed, her design was also innovative for a number of different reasons, all of which are crucial in the history of ship design, and in particular in the history of safety in passenger ships, at a time when America was wrestling with Russia on the world stage. With lessons having been learned from the Second World War, in this period passenger ships were designed in a way that made them easily convertible into troopships. Her designer William Francis Gibbs famously summed up his achievement: 'You can't set her on fire, you can't sink her, and you can't catch her.' The SS United States has remarkably survived the years and today sits at Pier 82 on the Delaware River in Philadelphia while money is raised and plans set in place to preserve her for future generations. To find out more Dr Sam Willis spoke with Susan Gibbs, granddaughter of William Frances Gibbs, the ship's visionary designer and President of the SS United States Conservancy, the body dedicated to her preservation. Whitney Heavey's family has an intergenerational appreciation of the ocean. Her grandfather was the captain of the (then) fastest transatlantic ocean liner, the SS United States, before air travel became widespread; her father was a navigator for the Navy's first nuclear submarine. The sea features prominently in Whitney's work as an artist, and has helped her heal after a series of recent hardships. She is deeply appreciative of her life, and the lessons she has learned by working through challenges. Join our conversation with Whitney Heavey on today's episode of Radio Maine.

We get to go back in history to a time when the SS United States, the great passenger liner and America's Flagship, was the fastest ship in the world. And to share her stories, I am honored to speak with Susan L. Gibbs, the SS United States Conservancy's President and co-founder. She is, also, the granddaughter of William Francis Gibbs, the designer of the SS United States. With regard to the future of this amazing vessel, the SS United States Conservancy is a national nonprofit organization that is leading the global effort to save and repurpose the SS United States.
Our deep dive into the stationary vessels of the Delaware River continues this week. Today we examine the SS United States, a derelict cruise liner parked outside of Ikea, and The Hooters Boat, a long gone relic of the tacky 80's craze. The SS Untied States is famous for being the fastest liner to ever cross the Atlantic Ocean but now it doesn't go anywhere. The Hooters Boat was in service for 100 years before it ended up sinking under the frozen river. Tune in to find out how they got there.
We talk to the granddaughter of the architect of the SS United States. At one time, this ship broke the speed record and went across the Atlantic Ocean in three days. Date: July 12, 2020
In the early 50s, the US government constructed an $78 million troop carrier for the navy. The purpose was to build a ship that could quickly carry 15,000 troops in times of war and was designed to outrun any other ship and travel non-stop anywhere in the world in less than ten days. The SS United States was the fastest, most reliable troop carrier in the world. The only catch is, she never carried troops. Instead the SS United States became a luxury liner for presidents, heads of state, and a variety of other celebrities who traveled on her during her seventeen years of service. As a luxury liner, she boasted 695 staterooms, 4 dining rooms, 3 bars, 2 theaters, a heated pool, 19 elevators, and the comfort of the world’s first fully air-conditioned passenger ship. Instead of a vessel used for battle during wartime, the SS United States became a means of indulgence for wealthy patrons who desired to cruise peacefully across the Atlantic. I want to talk about a couple of different shifts today. First of all, there is the shift in focus in the book of Acts. We have come to a chapter where the Apostle Peter sort of fades from the narrative, and a new primary player comes to the forefront: the Apostle Paul.

The story of the SS United States is also the story of brilliant marine engineer and naval architect who brought her into being. To say that William Francis Gibbs had a long-running love affair with a ship would be, quite frankly, an understatement. Salty-tongued, superstitious, and with no formal training in the field, he quit his job in real-estate law in 1916 to devote himself to designing the world’s fastest ship. In this episode, we talk with William Gibbs' granddaughter, who is heading up the charge to save the SS United States from a fate undeserving of such a passionate success story. Listen in!
Growing up in the age of the great transatlantic liner, William Francis Gibbs had only one dream: to build the world’s greatest ship. In that age, nations competed to build the largest, most luxurious and the fastest ship. In particular, they competed to win the Blue Riband, the prize awarded to the fastest ship to cross the Atlantic. Although Gibbs was the product of tremendous wealth and privilege, he was clear that it was not his family’s fortune that made him a success rather it was his father losing it all. Forced to drop out of Harvard and lacking basic mathematical skills, Gibbs became America’s greatest naval architect through boundless determination. Although he would build many ships, it was that first ship that he dreamed of that would mark the high-water mark of his career. The SS United States would be the largest, most luxurious and the fastest ship would know. It was also the last ship to hold the Blue Riband. In a book The Wall Street Journal called one of the ten best non-fiction books of 2012, Steve Ujifusa recounts the tale of the Steve Jobs of shipping, William Francis Gibbs. A Man and His Ship is available everywhere and in all formats. Be sure to Rate and Comment on iTunes.
Named one of The Wall Street Journal's top 10 nonfiction books of 2012 Steven Ujifusa's A Man and His Ship: America's Greatest Naval Architect and His Quest to Build the SS United States brings William Francis Gibbs' story to life. Wharton legal studies and business ethics professor G. Richard Shell recently sat down with Ujifusa to learn more about what inspired the author to tell Gibbs' story what led Gibbs to build ships and how the builder's firm became responsible for 70% of all ships built during World War II.
