Slam the Gavel welcomes John Scott from Florida to the podcast. John is the victim of multiple DCF Civil Rights Violations by a caseworker that has since left DCF. It all started November 6th, 2023. The caseworker, B. Bachelor, was rude, made malicious insinuations and wanted John to go into detail about DV that was done to him by his ex while in front of the children. This caseworker criminally conspired with multiple members of the Okaloosa County, FL Sheriff's Department to have him arrested for allegedly being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. However, there was a paperwork issue.... Where is the accountability?? John discussed his story and has a 2023 arrest case sealed by a Federal Judge and a 2022 Civil Rights Violation case sealed as well. John has court on April 7th, 2025 and has reached out to 200 law firms and found one that deals with DCF cases. John is trying to get the retainer together to be represented by Rapier Law Firm from Illinois. The SS United States, formerly the world's fastest transatlantic passenger liner, is about to become the world's biggest artificial reef. Later this week, the liner will be towed on its last voyage from Philadelphia to Mobile, Alabama, where it'll be stripped of fuel and other biohazards. Then it will be towed to waters off Okaloosa County, which bought the ship to give both sea creatures and divers a refuge. The county also plans a land-based museum honoring the ship's legacy. We speak with Alex Fogg, who's in charge of natural resources for the county.

rWotD Episode 2795: Destin Executive Airport Welcome to Random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia’s vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Saturday, 28 December 2024 is Destin Executive Airport.Destin Executive Airport (IATA: DSI, ICAO: KDTS, FAA LID: DTS), also known as Coleman Kelly Field, is a public use airport owned by and located in Okaloosa County, Florida. The airport is one nautical mile (2 km) east of the central business district of Destin, Florida. It is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2021–2025, which categorized it as a general aviation facility.Although many U. S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, this airport is assigned DTS by the FAA and DSI by the IATA. The airport's ICAO identifier is KDTS. Due to its close proximity to Eglin Air Force Base and the high levels of military flight activity, all flights to or from Destin Executive Airport must adhere to "special air traffic rules" and obtain ATC clearance before entering the Eglin/Valparaiso terminal area. The Destin Executive Airport is an independent general flight office possessed and worked by Okaloosa Area, and is not reliant on ad valorem charges. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:21 UTC on Saturday, 28 December 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Destin Executive Airport on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Stephen.
If you're like me, when it comes to sporting events, the only thing coming out of the stands should be cheers and chants, and the only thing leaving the field should be the occasional ball or a t-shirt fired from a canon. We'll come back to that.On this episode: you'll find out which sports fans tried to kill Santa Claus; we'll find out what stadium security personnel and Acorn Cop have in common; and we'll meet the very first person to ever come back to life after dying on the show. Also, if you had been listening to this as a Patreon supporter, you would enjoy an additional 9 minutes where we discussed the theatre of human pain that is professional soccer; you'd learn about the single worst fan over-reaction to the loss of a game in sports history; you'd take a listen through the incestuous, genital-laden world of European sports chants; and you'd learn why urine works better on tear gas than jellyfish stings. They say at its core, soccer transcends language, class, or background. It's all about people coming together with nothing more than a ball and some open space. All that will be true about today's episode, except for the part about space. A lot of disasters are the result of multiple preventable causes coming together in the worst way. Nowhere is that more true than in today's episode - but for the most part, it was the police. The Ghana Institute of Architects may have called the setting for today's story a death trap, which is why I have petitioned to change the name to the Ghana Institute of Architects and Psychic Predictions. You'll just have to wait and find out for yourself.Celebrity guests include: multiple-injury lawsuit artist, Santa Claus; hot air balloon novice, the Easter Bunny; former wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys, Michael Irvin; former Okaloosa County, Florida, Sheriff's Deputy, Jesse Hernandez, aka Acorn Cop; and President of Ghana, President John Kufuor. If the idea of getting episodes a little early and ad-free with ridiculously interesting extra material strikes you as a good thing, you can find out more at: www.patreon.com/funeralkazoo All older episodes can be found on any of your favorite channels Apple : https://tinyurl.com/5fnbumdw Spotify : https://tinyurl.com/73tb3uuw IHeartRadio : https://tinyurl.com/vwczpv5j Podchaser : https://tinyurl.com/263kda6w Stitcher : https://tinyurl.com/mcyxt6vw Google : https://tinyurl.com/3fjfxatt Spreaker : https://tinyurl.com/fm5y22su Podchaser : https://tinyurl.com/263kda6w RadioPublic : https://tinyurl.com/w67b4kec PocketCasts. : https://pca.st/ef1165v3 CastBox : https://tinyurl.com/4xjpptdr Breaker. : https://tinyurl.com/4cbpfayt Deezer. : https://tinyurl.com/5nmexvwt Follow us on the socials for more Facebook : www.facebook.com/doomsdaypodcast Instagram : www.instagram.com/doomsdaypodcast Twitter : www.twitter.com/doomsdaypodcast If you like the idea of your podcast hosts wearing more than duct tape and bits of old Halloween costumes for clothes and can spare a buck or two, you can now buy me a coffee at www.buymeacoffee.com/doomsday or join the patreon at www.funeralkazoo.com/doomsday

Today on Flashback, I want to you to imagine this town, our County with only two or three hotels or inns. Dirt roads abound. A commercial airport has not yet been created. The railroad in the County is still relatively new and the only way to get to Okaloosa County by land is by rail. No bridges have been built and places like Destin are minor blips on a map, let alone the consciousness of would-be vacationers. In fact, vacationing in Okaloosa County isn't even a thing. Mail was delivered by boat and yes people would come by boat if not by rail. This is a story about the early days of tourism in our County centered around a vacation rental dating back to the 1920s that is no longer with us today. The Valparaiso Inn

(AURN News) - The Pentagon is responding to the shooting death of a 23-year-old Black airman who was killed by an Okaloosa County, Florida deputy last week. Roger Fortson was shot and killed by the deputy on May 3rd after authorities responded to a call about a disturbance. Famed attorney Ben Crump held a news conference Thursday condemning Fortson's death. Attorney Crump says that deputies had the wrong apartment. “You are free in your home from people using excessive forces and searches and seizures of your home. And Roger had that right. He had that right to the Second Amendment. He had that right to the Fourth Amendment,” Crump said. "He was protecting us so that we could have that right," said Chantemekki Fortson, Roger Fortson's mother, referring to her son's military service and the rights afforded by the Second and Fourth Amendments that Crump cited. Okaloosa County Sheriff Eric Aden said in a statement that a deputy "responded to a call of a disturbance in progress where he encountered an armed man. The deputy shot the man, who later succumbed to his injuries." Body camera footage of the shooting was publicly released this week. Crump also released a FaceTime video showing Fortson on a call with his girlfriend at the time he was shot. At a Pentagon briefing, Press Secretary Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder addressed Fortson's death, saying "The Secretary is following this closely. And I would like to offer our thoughts and prayers to airman Fortson's family. We are of course saddened at the loss of one of our own. I know that his death is currently under investigation, so I'll have to refer you to the Florida civil authorities for any questions about what happened, but we do know that his family is grieving and we offer our sincere condolences." The shooting has sparked outrage among civil rights activists. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the tragic incident. Learn more about your ad choices. Take a drive around Okaloosa County and you are sure to come across the names of small towns or should I say communities that don't have much prominence on a map and without some simple signage you probably wouldn't know they even existed. This episode is about one of these communities, Dorcas Just outside of the city limits of Crestview heading east on U.S. Highway 90 past the Shoal River and past the Emerald Coast Zoo, you'll hit the intersection of County Road 393 in another not so well-known community of Deerland. Turn north and you are well on your way to the Community of Dorcas. You'll pass the Shoal River once again and you'll see a white sandy beach area on one of the banks, an area I'm told that locals use to or may still, gather for relaxation and socializing. The Dorcas Baptist Church has the most signage and there's a reason the community kind of centers around the church area. The name itself, Dorcas, has origins in the Bible mentioned in both the New Testament books of Acts and Peter as a woman known for her good works and acts of mercy. To learn more about this community I went to a Dorcas local, who just so happens to be the Executive Director of the Baker Block museum.

There were drive-ins as early as the 1910s, but the first patented drive-in was opened I 1933 by Richard Hollingshead in New Jersey. He created it as a solution for people unable to comfortably fit into smaller movie theater seats after creating a mini drive-in for his mother. Hollingshead advertised his drive-in as a place where “The whole family is welcome, regardless of how noisy the children are.” Drive ins began to take off around the country in the 50s and 60s and their popularity was evident in Okaloosa County, too.

Over the years Northwest Florida and Okaloosa County was the set for movies dating back to the 1940s like Twelve O'clock High (1949) starring Gregory Peck about aircrews in the United States Army's Eighth Air Force, who flew daylight bombing missions against Nazi Germany. There was Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) based on the real-life experiences of the pilots and crew of the famed Doolittle Raid. John Wayne's “The Green Berets,” was filmed at Eglin and more recently a movie called Frogs in 1972 where an upper class family who hunted and killed through the years and nature, including large bullfrogs rise up and attack them on an island. Its no surprise that this did not win an Academy Award We also had Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Truman Show filmed in nearby Seaside in South Walton. One of the most notable ones was filmed in Shalimar, Destin and Navarre was JAWS II, Starring Roy Scheider, who was known to frequent the local bars when they weren't shooting the film

Check on the show notes on my website! Welcome back to Stories from South Place! Today I'm joined by my amazing parents, Ray and Tricia Sansom. A few weeks ago the kids and I headed to "Honey and Poppy's House" for a quick weekend stay. I was so thankful to have an afternoon that we could record their story while the kids were napping! In part one of this episode (we recorded for over two hours, so I trimmed some and split it into two parts), Ray and Tricia share their story in what has become sort of the norm for this podcast -- it's the bird's eye view, if you will. They share about their lives growing up and raising a family in the beautiful area of Northwest Florida (that's the Destin/Fort Walton Beach area), as well as how they met (spoiler alert: it's super cute), fell in love, got married, and raised my sisters and me. They share about mom realizing her calling was to become a stay-at-home mom, and some of the challenges they faced with that, as well as my dad's calling to run for public office. They also discuss some stories from when my dad was elected to be a County Commissioner in Okaloosa County. They'll even end this part of the episode with a bit of a cliffhanger, because they're excellent storytellers :) In part two of this episode, we'll zero in on about a three year period of time from 2008-2011. This period of time was an extremely hard season for my family, but especially my parents. That season was also very public, so if you're from Florida, you may be familiar with the story, but I'm so thankful for the opportunity to give my parents a platform to share their side of the story. Be sure to subscribe to this podcast so that part two comes directly to your podcast app tomorrow! I would love to hear your feedback! Say hi through a DM or email! Since this is a BRAND NEW podcast, I would LOVE for you to give us a rating in iTunes to help people find the podcast! You're my personal marketing team -- so go rate it today! An Excert from Wedding Day: Bryan Flynn loves to catch fish on the Yellow River in Florida's Panhandle. He loves to drive couples to and from their weddings in his limo and he loves to stay out of people's business until one day he receives a gift that turns his world inside out. ****************************************************** From Ron Vincent: "Unlike Wedding Day, the language will not blister skin. But I hope to make you laugh, perhaps shed a tear or two, and encounter characters who entrance you. If I had to categorize Wedding Day, I would call it both a satire and a romantic comedy. Heavy on the satire part. I hope all my Kindle reader friends enjoy the story. For my soft cover readers, I will be doing signings in Northern and Southern California this year and the South - as in the southern U.S. this summer." ****************************************************** A brief biography: Ron Vincent grew up in Fort Walton Beach, Florida and has graduate degrees from Texas A&M and the University of Notre Dame. He has taught high school students in California's Central Valley for almost thirty years. His comic novel Mother's Day reflects the cadences, humor, and eccentricities he remembers growing up in Okaloosa County, Florida. ******************************************************
Ron Vincent grew up in Fort Walton Beach, Florida and has graduate degrees from Texas A & M and the University of Notre Dame. He has taught high school students in California's Central Valley for almost thirty years. His comic novel, Mother's Day, reflects the cadences, humor, and eccentricities he remembers growing up in Okaloosa County, Florida. Excerpt: Phil Oglesby hasn’t spoken to his mother in years. And she doesn’t seem to care until he surprises her with a Mother’s Day visit that becomes the biggest mistake he’s ever made. Williemaye, Phil’s mom, is not a Norman Rockwell mom. For many people the Sunday set aside to celebrate motherhood is often regarded as a celebration of the deepest ties, the warmest memories, and the best emotions. Phil’s Mother’s Day is like being invited to a birthday party where the guests decide to hang you. Sometimes in life, it is often a much better idea to stay at home.
