The SS United States, formerly the world's fastest transatlantic passenger liner, is about to become the world's biggest artificial reef. Later this week, the liner will be towed on its last voyage from Philadelphia to Mobile, Alabama, where it'll be stripped of fuel and other biohazards. Then it will be towed to waters off Okaloosa County, which bought the ship to give both sea creatures and divers a refuge. The county also plans a land-based museum honoring the ship's legacy. We speak with Alex Fogg, who's in charge of natural resources for the county.

The Adventures of Superman radio serial, which aired from 1940 to 1951, featured the DC Comics character Superman.Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938. The following year, the newspaper comic strip began and four audition radio programs were prepared to sell Superman as a radio series. Superman was first heard on the radio less than two years after the comic book appearance, with Bud Collyer in the title role. The juvenile adventure radio serial, sponsored by Kellogg's Pep, was a huge success during World War II and the post-war years, with many listeners following the quest for "truth and justice" in the daily radio broadcasts, the comic book stories and the newspaper comic strip. Airing in the late afternoon, the radio serial engaged its young after-school audience with its exciting and distinctive opening, which changed slightly as the series progressed. In the first few episodes, Superman's home planet of Krypton is located on the far side of the sun, as opposed to a distant star system as it is in most stories. During the journey to Earth, baby Kal-El grows into an adult and emerges fully grown from his ship after it lands on Earth. He is never adopted by Jonathan and Martha Kent and immediately begins his superhero career. This was eventually retconned in later episodes to match the narrative of the comic books. The syndicated series, titled simply Superman, first aired via pre-recorded transcription disks over 11 stations beginning on February 12, 1940, with an origin story, "The Baby from Krypton". The series aired in 15-minute episodes three times a week until May 9, 1941, with the conclusion of the "Nitrate Shipment" storyline. By that time, it had expanded to 63 stations.

The Shadow is a collection of serialized dramas originating in 1930s pulp novels and later expanding to various media. The titular character has been featured in radio dramas, pulp magazines, comic books, television, serials, video games, and films. Initially created as a radio show narrator, The Shadow was developed into a literary character by Walter B. Gibson in 1931. The radio drama, featuring Orson Welles, premiered in 1937. The Shadow character was depicted as having the power to manipulate men's minds, making them unable to see him. The radio program's iconic introduction, voiced by Frank Readick, and accompanied by a musical theme, has become a part of American idiom. Each episode concluded with a reminder that crime does not pay and The Shadow knows. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dwight-allen0/support

Sean Bardon and Joe Lynch discuss the empty container marketplace. Sean is the Co-founder and COO at Qualle, The world's first empty container marketplace that connects exporters, importers, trucking companies, and steamship lines. Using Qualle's technology, supply chains run more effectively, more efficiently, and less greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere. About Sean Bardon Sean Bardon is the Co-founder and COO at Qualle, The world's first empty container marketplace truckers actually use. Sean is a bilingual start-up veteran who's worked in China with the Beijing Silicon Valley Group, leading the logistical planning of multiple joint ventures. After gaining vital international experience in manufacturing and transpacific shipping, he took on a variety of roles back in the U.S. managing freight and drayage trucking operations for enterprise clients like Amazon, Samsung, and Apple. Sean earned a bachelor degrees in Chinese Studies and International Business at University at Albany, SUNY and completed post graduate studies in Chinese at Princeton and Beijing Normal University. About Qualle   Since launching in May 2022, Qualle has quickly built up a substantial trucker base that spans from the LA and Long Beach ports to New York, New Jersey, Savannah, Houston, and Memphis ports. Truckers can use Qualle to manage and request street turns with multiple steamship lines at the click of a button. They can also access additional empty equipment or offer up their surplus equipment in a documented and secure place, the empty container marketplace. This saves them a lot of time and money running their operations. With this marketplace, Qualle has become the leading empty container management platform that connects truckers, exporters, importers, and steamship lines. The team at Qualle aim to streamline the traditionally fragmented drayage space by connecting and sharing more data between these stakeholders with the end goal of keeping containers moving. Key Takeaways: The Empty Container Marketplace Sean Bardon is the Co-founder and COO at Qualle, The world's first empty container marketplace truckers actually use. In the podcast interview, Sean and Joe discuss the empty container marketplace and the importance of efficiency, visibility, and sustainability when moving shipping containers. Sean, the Qualle team, and major steamship lines have collaborated to develop an empty container marketplace powered by Qualle's technology. Shipping containers are the building blocks of the supply chain, yet we don't do a great job managing those containers. The poor management of containers drives extra costs, wasted time, empty miles for trucking companies, and excess pollution.  By connecting the four major stakeholders in drayage, Qualle is helps to the container moving: Exporters gain access to more capacity and equipment. Steamship lines improve container velocity through flexible connected transactions. Trucking Companies are able secure the container equipment they need. Importers free up yard space and reduce their overall costs. Using Qualle's technology, supply chains run more effectively, more efficiently, and less greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere. Our Victorian shipping forebears designated twelve noon on 20 February each year as the notional time and date at which Baltic ports became ice free, and that has given birth to one of the great traditions of marine insurance. Two centuries later, midday on 20 February still marks the hard cut-off point by which the vast majority of shipowners must have in place cover for liability in everything from collisions and spills to seafarer injuries and deaths. Without protection and indemnity policies, ships cannot trade. No state wants uninsured vessels transiting its territorial waters and no port will admit them without the guarantee that costs will be met if things go badly wrong. For around 90% of the world fleet, P&I cover is provided by one of 13 P&I clubs, as these not-for-profit mutual monoline insurers are known. Through their trade association the International Group, and an elaborate scheme of retentions, pooling, captives and reinsurance almost beyond mortal ken, ensures that cover can run as high as $2bn and beyond in the worst cases, for very modest cost. The workload of renewing policies cannot be evenly spread throughout the year, even for the sake of an easy life. But even so, each contract has to be concluded within the established time limit. That leaves us with the renewal round. While a few straightforward deals get signed off towards the back end of each calendar year, things only really get going after everybody has recovered from the Christmas and new year break. Sometimes negotiations go right to the wire. This year the process has seen multiple complications, as we shall hear in this week's edition of the Lloyd's List shipping podcast. Progress has been unusually tardy, for reasons that we're going to discuss. Clubs have had to contend with booked but unrealised investment losses thanks to turbulence on the financial markets, which has led to downgrades from ratings agencies. Then there is the sensitive matter of pricing. P&I clubs are not for profit, but they do have to bring in sufficient premiums to keep the show on the road. 2023 marks the fourth successive year of substantial premium hikes, with a 10% going rate. Unsurprisingly, some owners have been reluctant to cough up. To add to the complexities, two of the 13 International Group affiliates, North and Standard, are due to merge. When? Well, noon on 20 February. That has seen some big boxship players split their fleet to avoid over-reliance on the combined entity. Lloyd's List prides itself on the best marine insurance coverage anywhere, and our insurance editor David Osler has been busy talking to some of the key players in the sector. Our podcast guests today are two brokers and two club chief executives. The former are Stephen Hawke, managing director of PL Ferrari & Co, and Alex Vullo, executive director of Gallagher. The latter are Andrew Cutler of Britannia and Jonathan Andrews of Steamship, who takes over from his predecessor Stephen Martin on … you've guessed it … 20 February.

The Clallam experiences severe seas and gale-force winds as it enters the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and begins to sink within sight of Victoria Harbor. Fearing that the ship is sinking, the captain orders the launch of three lifeboats, each carrying all of the women, children, and some men. The lifeboats capsize or are wrecked within minutes, and everyone is lost at sea.The Clallam is kept afloat by the remaining passengers and crew until early January 9, when she begins to sink. Dozens are rescued by the tugboats Richard Holyoke and Sea Lion, but 56 people drown.
