A couple of months ago the motherboard died. I wanted to record TV directly to one of my UNRAID servers up in the attic. Unfortunately, there are no TV aerial coax connections in the attic. I decided to buy this box. You can plug the HDHomeRun into your aerial in the lounge and use the other aerial connector to plug directly into the TV. The HD Homerun has an ethernet port so I can connect to another box somewhere on the network. Using Emby I can connect directly to the box to watch live TV. Emby on my UNRAID server supports HDHomeRun, so I can record TV programs using the schedule from the HDHomerun. I can watch Emby recordings from anywhere else on the planet that has WiFi and decent Internet access. HDHomeRun app on both Android and iOS that allows you to record programs and watch the recordings. Steve Litchfield on Why you (probably) don't need a VPN You're absolutely safe without a VPN. Every Internet-facing application accesses data over an already-secure connection. There's nothing bad guys could do even if they were to somehow intercept random batches of your over-the-air 1s and 0s. VPNs are OTT security. It will make activity significantly slower, because of extra encryption - pages will take longer to load, videos will buffer more. You just don't need a VPN. You really don't. Even in a dodgy cybercafe in Turkey. Your own encryption, built into your OS and applications, is quite enough. One caveat to all this - VPN's ability to fake where you are in the world to a service that you're accessing. Which is borderline illegal, or at least against terms of service of whichever service you're accessing. But so what? Save your money! Steve Litchfield, technology journalist and one of the world's most experienced reviewers of smartphones, shares his hands-on impressions of Apple's flagship with MEX founder Marek Pawlowski. Drawing on his experiences reviewing more than 200 mobile devices, Steve places iPhone X in the context of 20+ years of touchscreen interfaces. Episode 082 gives us a chance to dig into the future of Continuum; especially since the WhartonBrooks Cerulean Moment has been officially announced. Aaron has a great tip for cleaning up duplicate contacts in Skype and Outlook. Vernon paints a picture of how the casual user could use their mobile in three years. 1:45 Tip of the Episode: Aaron shares how to clean up contact duplication after the Skype Preview messes them up. 1) Make sure you turn off SMS Relay for now.  2) Go to Skype app and under Skype Contacts, remove anyone that isn't an actual Skype contact.  3) Next up, go to Outlook.com on the web (app is not sufficient). Empty Deleted Items.  4) Go to People on the web and go to the actual Contacts list ... Perform clean up there. Actually, here's a better tip... this is actually easier on the phone through People app. Enter Select mode and select all the contacts you can find on the web that are duplicate... When you choose the Delete option on phone, it will prompt you for confirmation... UNCHECK the version you want to keep and leave the rest selected... press Delete, and voila-- nice and tidy. 5) Go back on web and empty Deleted Items again (if you look in there, you'll see that when you delete contacts from ANYWHERE now, it leaves them in Deleted Items. Once emptied, you can verify your results on the People portion of Outlook Web.   8:42 The Mobile Minute: WhartonBrooks’ Cerulean Mobile announces their Cerulean Moment. Visit IndiGoGo to preorder! Also, Vernon recently posted an editorial, making the case for “Why You Should Back the Cerulean Moment” 16:14 Top News: Vernon and Aaron discuss why Continuum will be the killer app of the future, especially for regular consumers.   26:57 Samsung’s DeX is nothing like Continuum, according to Steve Litchfield on AAWP Insight Podcast. 37:10 Win of the Week 42:13 Deal O’ The Day: Rent any of 7 of the X-Men movies for 1000 Bing Rewards points. 45:05 Insider Feedback Item: Contacts Linking and/or Missing Thanks to @carlomendoza for the great suggestion for Windows Insider feedback to discuss! 48:46 Personal Media Picks: Money Tracker Pro White & Nerdy - Weird Al Yankovic The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change – Stephen R. We cover the early years (adventures in aerospace), the rise of Psion and the 3-Lib shareware library, Steve's app development efforts (from golf to GIS), the dawn of connected PDAs, and the beginning of the Symbian era. There's so much to cover that we'll have to continue in a follow-up podcast, part 2 if you like - watch this space for a follow up episode. This will look at not only Steve's efforts in the Symbian era and beyond but also Rafe's, and those of the other characters involved in the 'origins' and deveopment of the 'All About' sites. We have plenty of anecdotes left to share - and this time Rafe can't use the excuse that he was still in school (etc!) so he'll be joining in with the reminiscences more!
