One of the largest investor-owned utilities in the country is preparing for an 80% increase in electricity demand by 2045. In this episode of Grid Talk, host Marty Rosenberg interviews Steve Powell who is the president and CEO of Southern California Edison. With a customer base of 15 million people across a 50,000 square mile service area, Southern California Edison is changing the way it prepares for the increased demand.“Our engineers that are frankly used to dealing with relatively small changes on the grid and small amounts of load growth and really focus on just making sure that the infrastructure stays reliable are now having to think very differently about how we plan for customer load growth and load growth is showing up really quickly,” said Powell.Meeting the demand for carbon free electricity means more generation from wind and solar and other sources like nuclear and geothermal. It also means more transmission to get electricity to customers.“You look at the California Independent System Operator's 20-year outlook and they're talking about 50 plus billion dollars of new transmission that needs to get built. We're going to need to build transmission miles at four times the pace that we've seen historically.”Powell admits 20 years is short timeframe, and the industry needs to move faster. “About 20% of the energy that customers use is electricity. By the time you get to 2045, I would expect 50 to 60% of it to be electricity based. So, customers are going to be two to three times more dependent on electricity than they are today. That means our level of service has to be better. Reliability is going to have to be better.”Steven Powell is president and chief executive officer of Southern California Edison. Powell has held a variety of positions of progressing responsibility since joining the company in 2000, including executive vice president, Operations and senior vice president of Strategy, Planning, and Operational Performance. He has a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles and received his MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management. He has also held leadership positions in resource planning and strategy, gas and power procurement, and SCE's plug-in electric vehicle readiness efforts.

Love Me Fierce In Danger: The Life of James Ellroy (Bloomsbury, 2023) is the story of James Ellroy, one of the most provocative and singular figures in American literature. The so-called “Demon Dog of Crime Fiction,” Ellroy enjoys a celebrity status and notoriety that few authors can match. However, traumas from the past have shadowed his literary success. When Ellroy was ten years old, his mother was brutally murdered. The crime went unsolved, and her death marked the start of a long and turbulent road for Ellroy that has included struggles with alcoholism, drug addiction, homelessness, and jail time. In tracing his life and career, Steven Powell reveals how Ellroy's upbringing in LA, always on the periphery of Hollywood, had a profound and dark influence on his work as a novelist. Using new sources, Powell also uncovers Ellroy's family secrets, including the mysterious first marriage of his mother Jean Ellroy, eighteen years before her murder. At its heart, Love Me Fierce in Danger is the story of how Ellroy overcame his demons to become the bestselling and celebrated author of such classics as The Black Dahlia and LA Confidential. Informed by interviews with friends, family, peers, and literary and Hollywood collaborators, as well as extensive conversations with Ellroy himself, Love Me Fierce In Danger pulls back the curtain on an enigmatic figure who has courted acclaim and controversy with equal zealotry. Steven Powell is an Honorary Fellow in the English Department at the University of Liverpool, UK. He is the editor of Conversations with James Ellroy (2012) and 100 American Crime Writers (2012). His most recent work is James Ellroy: Demon Dog of Crime Fiction (2016). Daniel Moran earned his B.A. and M.A. in English from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. in History from Drew University. The author of Creating Flannery O'Connor: Her Critics, Her Publishers, Her Readers, he teaches research and writing at Rutgers and co-hosts the podcast Fifteen-Minute Film Fanatics, found here on the New Books Network and on X. Sydney Powell, 23, has been convicted of the brutal murder of her mother, 50-year-old Brenda Powell, following the revelation of Sydney's expulsion from college. The jury's verdict included charges of murder, felony assault, and tampering with evidence. As the verdicts were read, a visibly distraught Sydney Powell sobbed in the courtroom, marking the culmination of a trial that delved into the depths of her mental health and the tragic events that unfolded on that fateful day in March 2020. On March 3, 2020, Sydney's father, Steven Powell, went online to try to pay her tuition but couldn't access the portal. When he confronted his daughter, she confessed that she had been expelled from Mount Union University and had been keeping it a secret for months. After Steven told his wife, she returned home from her job at Akron Children's Hospital as a child life specialist to discuss the matter with her daughter. Officials from Mount Union University testified that while they were on the phone with Brenda, they heard repeated thuds and screaming, and then the call disconnected. One of the officials tried to call back, and Sydney answered, pretending to be her mother. However, the official did not believe her and called the police. Prosecutors say that Sydney repeatedly beat her mom in the head with the cast iron skillet, retrieved a steak knife, and stabbed her nearly 30 times. "She had to switch weapons and keep attacking her," assistant prosecutor Brian Stano told jurors. "That is purposeful. That is trying to end someone." After the attack, Sydney shattered a window to stage a break-in, according to prosecutors. When the police arrived, Sydney claimed an intruder had entered the house, her mother told her to run, and upon her return, she found her mother on the floor. It's called Love Me Fierce In Danger: The Life of James Ellroy. Steven and I talk a lot about Ellroy but also about music & England & shopping malls. It's a beautiful episode. When Susan Cox met Josh Powell, she envisioned her own ‘happily ever after'. They were both members of the LDS church and seemed to have similar values and goals in life. The couple settled down and had two sons, Charlie and Braden. One early pressure point in their marriage was interference and unwanted advances that were continually being made by Josh's father, Steven Powell. Steven would film Susan without her consent and he wrote many cringe-worthy love songs for her. Susan became fed up and the family moved states from Washington to Utah. Not too long into their marriage, Josh began to change. He became increasingly controlling - even though Susan was the breadwinner in the family, he would control their finances so tightly that she did not have enough money to feed her children. She began to grow vegetables to make sure they had enough to eat. Susan also told family and friends that Josh threatened to "destroy her" if she filed for divorce. She then said that if she dies "it may not be an accident, even if it may look like one." One cold December day in 2009, Susan's neighbor visited the Powell family and they ate together. Susan said she felt tired and wanted to nap. This was the last time anyone would see Susan alive. Josh's version of events on the day that Susan disappeared is that he took his two young sons camping, at midnight, in ‘blizzard like' conditions'. He told police that when he arrived home, Susan was gone. Josh moved with Charlie and Braden back to Washington and they lived there for the next few years. Susan's family battled for custody of the boys for years, and it got to a point where Josh was only allowed to see them during visits that were supervised by a social worker. When it became evident that he was never going to regain full custody of his sons, Josh killed both children and then himself in one of the most horrendous crimes that you could imagine. Police closed their active investigation into Susan's case in 2013. I think we all assumed that her case would remain cold indefinitely. Until now. Just a few days ago, searchers recovered bones and clothing from a mine in the Utah desert. Susan's family have said they are hopeful the remains belong to Susan. The Ellroy Boys are joined by one of the finest people on the planet, the crime fiction scholar and author, Steven Powell. This show would not exist without his work as he is truly the original Ellroy Boy. Additionally, he created the wonderful resource, The Venetian Vase (https://venetianvase.co.uk/) and if you're at all interested in this show, if you're fan of the demon dog, it's just essential, so if you haven't, check it out. Anyhow, today we're talking about James Ellroy's latest novel, Widespread Panic, a benzedrine blitzed confessional from real-life police officer turned Hollywood extortionist and private investigator, the one and only "hellhound who kept Hollywood captive" Fred Otash. The boys dig deep into the pervdog opus that chronicles everything from communist conspiracies to Caryl Chessman to the depraved antics of Nicolas Ray while shooting Rebel Without A Cause. The book is a rhizomatic and wildly entertaining tale. It's a joyous jolt to the system, a devilish dexedrine trip without the comedown. We celebrate and analyze the book, while exploring its grand excavation of Hollywood perversion, exposing and illuminating the industry's purposeful perpetuation of corruption, as well as deconstructing it's most insidious myths with aplomb. That aside! Forgive my hyperbole, I just loved this book and had such a great time talking to this crew. Hope you enjoy! Nothing is left unsaid. Joshua Powell returns home with his two sons from a camping trip they took in blizzard conditions, while his wife goes missing...Did Josh Powell, the husband of Susan Powell, kill her or collaborate with other family members to make her "disappear?" On today's episode of the Solvable Mysteries Podcast, we review the highly disturbing case of Susan Powell, trapped in a marriage with a narcissist whose controlling behavior, irresponsible spending habits, and inability to adapt to others led to what most likely was her murder and her corpse being hidden, possibly destroyed. Susan left clues behind about what might have happened to her, saying in a videotaped message she made before her disappearance that if something happened to her, it was likely it was not an accident, and possibly something Josh would be responsible for. This, coupled with the disturbing behavior of Steven Powell, who had his own disturbing backstory, and who may have been a bad influence on his children, made it very likely that Josh had something to do with Susan disappearing forever. Tragically, Josh would abduct his two children during a supervised visit and murder them, before killing himself in a massive explosion at his home. Please Subscribe to our YouTube channel to make sure you don't miss new episodes of the Solvable Mysteries Podcast, we upload on a weekly basis.

We're back in the books for this very special episode featuring original Ellroy Boy and brilliant crime fiction scholar and author, Steven Powell, as well as genius artist Howling Mutant. This time we're talking L.A Confidential, the third novel in the first LA quartet. In the first story, Amy recounts the extremely suspicious disappearance of mother and wife Susan Powell. On December 7, 2009, Susan disappeared without a trace. Although no one has been officially charged and Susan's body has still not been found, police zeroed on her husband, Joshua Powell. Susan left various clues indicating that if anything happened to her, Josh would be to blame. This bizarre story has many twists including Joshua's affair, Steven Powell's, Joshua's father, dangerous obsession with Susan, and Joshua's strange behaviour following Susan's disappearance. And unfortunately, the story also has a tragic ending when Joshua barricaded himself and his sons in their house and created an explosion that killed all three. In the second story, Chris details another disappearance, that of 23-year-old Phoenix Coldon. Phoenix's car was found abandoned on December 18, 2011. Phoenix left her family home, but never returned. The family has taken upon themselves to investigate her disappearance, talking with various unsavory characters to try and track her down. They've even followed leads that turned out to be cruel hoaxes, which have completely ruined them financially, but have not given up looking for Phoenix. Josh Powell believed in his own greatness from at least age 5. So why wouldn't any girls date him? Why did his only other serious girlfriend before Susan Cox run away in fear? Perhaps because he inherited some of his father Steven Powell's bizarre beliefs about relationships and marriage.
