This Keynote Lecture was given at the Eleventh International Iris Murdoch Conference at Chichester on the 31st August, 2024. Justin is Professor of Philosophy at Brown, USA. There are philosophers who have said that late 20th century philosophical works do not need commentaries in the way that the writings of Plato and Aristotle, or Kant and Hegel do. Russell and Strawson, or Kripke and Lewis — and others at least in the English-speaking academic world — have committed themselves so much to clarity and a kind of professional *limitation* that they will have followers and opponents, but won't need expository or explanatory commentary. But Wittgenstein is evidently an exception and so, I think, is Murdoch. What makes philosophical commentary valuable when it is? What kinds of work does it, or should it, do? Which kind of institutional structures promote one kind of writing and which another? And what kind of exception is Murdoch? These are questions, I think, worth exploring.

The Theory of Descriptions, formulated by Bertrand Russell, addresses how we can meaningfully discuss entities that may not exist or are not explicitly defined. Russell categorizes phrases like “the current Emperor of Kentucky” (denoting nothing), “the present President of the U.S.A.” (denoting one definite object), and “the cutest kitten” (denoting a unique individual whose identity might be unknown) as denoting phrases. He argues that the syntactic form of these descriptions can be misleading, emphasizing the importance of their logical and semantic structure for clarity in philosophical debates. This theory provides a way to analyze propositions involving these descriptions, ensuring that statements about non-existent entities (like “The King of France does not exist”) can be meaningfully discussed without implying that such entities have some form of existence. Since its introduction in Russell's 1905 paper “On Denoting,” the theory has been influential but also subject to criticism from philosophers like P. F. Strawson and Keith Donnellan, who have offered alternative views on the use and interpretation of descriptions.

Narcissism is not a black and white concept, but rather a spectrum. It is important to understand narcissism through a trauma-informed and internal family systems lens. Those who experience narcissistic abuse often have core emotional wounds and protector parts that come up to distract and soothe them. Healing from narcissistic abuse is a lifelong journey that involves building capacity in the nervous system, regulating emotions, and re-parenting the wounded inner child. Community support and validation are crucial for healing from narcissistic abuse.

SummaryIn this episode, self-development coach Johnny Lawrence interviews narcissism expert Caroline Strawson. They discuss the overuse and misinterpretation of the term 'narcissist' in society, the impact of narcissistic abuse as a form of domestic abuse, and the importance of understanding narcissism from a trauma-informed perspective. Caroline shares her personal journey of healing from narcissistic abuse and how she transitioned from being a podiatrist to a trauma-informed therapist and coach. They also explore the concept of post-traumatic growth and the complexities of narcissism, including the covert narcissist and the role of trauma in narcissistic behaviour. In this conversation, Caroline and Johnny discuss the dynamics of narcissistic relationships and the impact of narcissistic abuse. They explore the concept of mirror neurons and how people in relationships with narcissists often exhibit narcissistic traits themselves as a means of self-protection. They also discuss the concept of trauma bonding and the physiological addiction that can develop in toxic relationships. Caroline emphasises the importance of strategy and support in healing from narcissistic abuse. She highlights the need to honour and express emotions, such as anger and sadness, in a healthy way. They also touch on the differences between neurodivergence and narcissism.TakeawaysThe term 'narcissist' is often overused and misinterpreted in society, leading to the minimisation of the experiences of those who have suffered narcissistic abuse.Narcissistic abuse is a form of domestic abuse and should be taken seriously.Healing from narcissistic abuse requires understanding and addressing the trauma that underlies it.Post-traumatic growth is possible after experiencing narcissistic abuse, leading to a thriving and flourishing life.Narcissism is a complex issue, and there are different types of narcissists, including the covert narcissist. It is important to focus on healing oneself rather than trying to change a narcissist, as they are unlikely to take ownership or responsibility for their behaviour. People in relationships with narcissists often exhibit narcissistic traits themselves as a means of self-protection.Trauma bonding can develop in toxic relationships, leading to a physiological addiction to the cycle of love bombing and silent treatment.Expressing and honouring emotions, such as anger and sadness, is crucial for healing from narcissistic abuse.Understanding the differences between neurodivergence and narcissism is important to avoid misdiagnosis and provide appropriate support.Hope is essential in the healing process, and finding the right community and support can make a significant difference.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Buzzword06:18 Caroline's Journey: From Podiatrist to Trauma-Informed Therapist12:24 Post-Traumatic Growth and Living a Thriving Life30:16 Defining Narcissism and Narcissistic Personality Disorder36:23 The Complexity of Narcissism and Reactive Abuse37:12 The Dynamics of Narcissistic Relationships and the Impact of Narcissistic Abuse39:38 Mirror Neurons and the Development of Narcissistic Traits in Relationships41:49 Trauma Bonding and the Physiological Addiction in Toxic Relationships44:38 Healing and the Importance of Expressing and Honoring Emotions47:31 Understanding the Differences Between Neurodivergence and Narcissism50:02 Finding Hope and Support in the Healing ProcessFind Caroline StrawsonWebsite: https://carolinestrawson.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carolinestrawson/?hl=en Hosted on Acast. When Caroline Strawson walked away from her career in podiatry, she stepped into a world where healing takes on an entirely different meaning. Her journey through the shadowy valleys of narcissistic abuse has not only reshaped her life but also forged her into a beacon of hope for others battling similar demons. Our latest conversation with Caroline, a trauma therapist and coach, dissects the harrowing impact of trauma on individuals embroiled in high-conflict divorces, especially when entangled with a narcissistic partner. She enlightens us with her 'traffic lights of tolerance,' a metaphor for the nervous system's distress signals, and how ignoring these can lead to chronic illnesses. Caroline's insights into the body's defense mechanisms offer a lifeline of understanding for anyone navigating the stormy waters of such life challenges. As we wade through the complexities of emotional trauma and chronic illnesses, Caroline peels back the layers of how unprocessed pain can manifest in physical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. She speaks to the heart of those who've felt the sting of a flawed legal system during divorce, where the desire to advocate for change can sometimes eclipse the necessity of self-healing. We examine the intricate balance between the drive to transform the system and the crucial act of tending to one's own well-being. Her wisdom on self-regulation serves as a poignant reminder for listeners: to wear the armor of personal healing before stepping onto the battlefield of advocacy. The crescendo of our deep dive with Caroline equips you with empowering strategies to fortify yourself for court appearances, from the emotional armor of personal talismans to the grounding presence of imagined protective figures. She imparts the possibilities of post-traumatic growth and the blueprint for a purpose-driven life beyond the aftermath of trauma. Wrapping up, Caroline extends an olive branch to those interested in becoming trauma-informed coaches—a reflection of her unwavering commitment to lighting the path for others toward healing and thriving, long after the gavel falls and the courtroom doors close.

Do you view your life as a narrative? If you do, you might be holding yourself back in ways you don't even realise. From seeing failures where there aren't any, to restricting your choices to those that fit the story, unhelpful views about what shape a successful life should take are happiness-deleting distractions from what's really important. Join your imperfect friend for the lowdown on how you can change the narrative to one that fits you better - or even reject the life-is-a-story thing altogether.References:Setiya, K. 2022: Life Is Hard: How Philosophy Can Help Us Find Our Way (Penguin).Strawson, G. 2015: 'I am not a story', Aeon (https://aeon.co/essays/let-s-ditch-the-dangerous-idea-that-life-is-a-story)

Then & Now: Philosophy, History & Politics

Free Will – Our Freedom to choose for ourselves – is at the heart of our sense of being human. How we think about free will effects everything from responsibility and criminal justice to laziness and poverty to seemingly ordinary choices like what I'll have for dinner. Free Will is of course the power to select from options, for ourselves, unencumbered, unrestrained, uncaused – to be the author of our own thoughts and actions. But what does this really mean? Does Free Will really exist? And is it a wider social, cultural, and political concept? Is it really about responsibility? I look at a few philosophers - P.F. Strawson, Spinoza, Plato, Socrates, and more - to explore the concept Then & Now is FAN-FUNDED! Support me on Patreon and pledge as little as $1 per video: http://patreon.com/user?u=3517018

Sometimes, it takes losing everything you know to start over and begin the journey of healing.   Caroline Strawson is an internationally recognized trauma-informed therapist and coach who helps her clients recover from narcissistic abuse and complex PTSD and create thriving lives. Her journey began with her own story of loss when, in a very short period of time, her mother passed away, her narcissistic husband left her and their two young children and she discovered he had gotten them into $100,000 of debt, leading to the loss of her home and the life she had built.   Facing PTSD, anxiety, depression, self-harm, guilt and shame, Caroline turned inward and took a close look at herself, her life and her relationships – and has since become a leader in trauma-informed recovery and healing from abuse.   In this conversation, Caroline shares her story of overcoming narcissistic abuse, how she finally recognized the abuse and how she began the journey of healing. She offers deep insights into how childhood wounding forms, how we develop “protector parts” and how those parts can lead to struggles like codependency and narcissism. She is a wealth of knowledge on trauma, how we get stuck in life, and how to move forward.   Listen to discover: The source of childhood wounding and trauma How our nervous system is designed to protect us Why codependents and narcissists are magnets for each other (and why it's easier for the codependent to change) How we can feel compassion for wounded people without accepting abuse Why people stay in abusive relationships and how to help a friend in an abusive relationship The difference between PTSD and complex PTSD How to begin building self-worth even if you're still in an abusive relationship   Whether you've been in a relationship with a narcissist or not, you will get SO much out of this episode and gain a greater understanding of why you do what you do, what is going on in your brain in relation to trauma, and how to heal your wounding so you can form healthier relationships with self and others.   "Initially I was waiting for that epiphany of him changing to then be ok for me to move forward. And of course, that isn't the case. Because we can't change anybody."  - Caroline Strawson "Trauma isn't a person. It's not an event. It's what I feel and what I'm saying to myself about those events." - Caroline Strawson "Our system all of the time is working to keep us safe, keep us alive, protect us, and move us away from the biggest perceived pain.” - Caroline Strawson "No narcissist is born. They are created from their childhood." - Caroline Strawson  "The codependent is giving, giving, giving trying to soothe their self-worthiness wounds. The narcissist is like, 'Give it to me. I'll take, take, take,' to soothe their self-worthiness wounds." - Caroline Strawson "I think of narcissism on a scale." - Michelle Chalfant "When we're in these relationships, our reality is so distorted. To build self-worth is to then start seeing reality much clearer." - Michelle Chalfant "Grounding and getting all five senses online also helps us with our reality. We stop doubting ourselves." - Michelle Chalfant   LINKS & RESOURCES Caroline Strawson Website https://www.carolinestrawson.com/   Caroline Strawson Facebook https://www.facebook.com/carolinestrawson/   Caroline Strawson Instagram https://www.instagram.com/carolinestrawson/   “Divorce Became My Superpower” (Caroline Strawson Book) https://www.amazon.com/Divorce-Became-Superpower-Caroline-Strawson/dp/1726255549   MORE ADULT CHAIR The Adult Chair® Website https://theadultchair.com    The Adult Chair® Membership https://theadultchair.com/membership/   The Adult Chair® Events https://theadultchair.com/events/   The Adult Chair® Coaching Certification https://theadultchair.com/certification     STAY CONNECTED Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themichellechalfant   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheMichelleChalfant/   The Adult Chair® Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theadultchair/   YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Michellechalfant

An innovative reassessment of philosopher P. F. Strawson's influential "Freedom and Resentment" P. F. Strawson was one of the most important philosophers of the twentieth century, and his 1962 paper "Freedom and Resentment" is one of the most influential in modern moral philosophy, prompting responses across multiple disciplines, from psychology to sociology.  In Freedom, Resentment, and the Metaphysics of Morals (Princeton UP, 2020), Pamela Hieronymi closely reexamines Strawson's paper and concludes that his argument has been underestimated and misunderstood. Line by line, Hieronymi carefully untangles the complex strands of Strawson's ideas. After elucidating his conception of moral responsibility and his division between "reactive" and "objective" responses to the actions and attitudes of others, Hieronymi turns to his central argument. Strawson argues that, because determinism is an entirely general thesis, true of everyone at all times, its truth does not undermine moral responsibility. Hieronymi finds the two common interpretations of this argument, "the simple Humean interpretation" and "the broadly Wittgensteinian interpretation," both deficient. Drawing on Strawson's wider work in logic, philosophy of language, and metaphysics, Hieronymi concludes that his argument rests on an implicit, and previously overlooked, metaphysics of morals, one grounded in Strawson's "social naturalism." In the final chapter, she defends this naturalistic picture against objections. Rigorous, concise, and insightful, Freedom, Resentment, and the Metaphysics of Morals sheds new light on Strawson's thinking and has profound implications for future work on free will, moral responsibility, and metaethics. I spoke with Max Kiener about his work in moral responsibility, consent, and Strawson's reactive and objective attitudes. We discussed applied cases of the objective stance, such as manipulating someone into getting the Covid vaccine, undergoing a medical operation, or for someone's best interests. #determinism #freewill Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Philosophy1101 Website: https://www.philosophy1101.com/

Trách nhiệm đạo đức là gì? - What is moral responsibility?
