Thank You To Our Partners The Institute, AutoFlow, AutoLeap, Shop Dog Marketing, In-BoundIn this episode, our host Craig O'Neill welcomes his friend and colleague, Brandon Crusha to discuss a simple but often uncomfortable topic among practitioners of change. The slogan: “This Sucks - and it Works!”Craig was inspired to discuss this topic with Brandon after reading a post about slogans that don't really work well - and the phrase above was suggested as an alternative to some others. This stood out, because Craig has literally stood in a room with Brandon as Brandon spoke nearly that exact phrase to a group of tire specialists.Brandon has a background in the automotive industry, in software, and rather significantly, the Marine Corp. The latter component is a thing which makes Brandon uniquely effective when coaching and onboarding in his role at Autoflow, and in other endeavors Brandon is engaged in.Listeners will appreciate hearing Brandon's stories, hard earned wisdom and will find a pragmatic approach to learning that emphasises acknowledging that changes are tough, but embracing the suck is the way to get through.Additional insights:The three ways of learning according to Brandon's instructor in the Marine Corp1.) Meet Joel Keating. He's Grindr's SVP of Engineering & Chief Information Security Officer. He's joined by his Talentism coach, Gregory Kim.Together, they describe how paying attention to Joel's “This Sucks” response can open up the door to curiosity and unlock solutions to big problems at work. But, this only works if the curiosity is genuine. We learn that sometimes Joel can go through the motions: set up a meeting, ask questions, get feedback. But if under those behaviors Joel is actually harboring judgment, it doesn't unlock anything. Greg and Joel have come up with a simple system to avoid the trap of hidden judgments. Joel exposes his expectations. All the time. This act is so simple, but when repeated regularly it has created powerful clarity for Joel and those around him. Everyday at Grindr, Joel applies the frameworks he learned through coaching. The problems at work don't go away, but he is able to move through them with more agency and clarity, making the next challenge that much more manageable.Listen in and apply Joel's hard won learnings to your work context. For more on the frameworks Joel references, visit Talentism.com
A few months back, I was contacted by Tequila Mockingbird Productions in Los Angeles about a film called This Sucks. They wondered if I would like to interview writer/director Cameron A. Mitchell for my podcast. Long story short, I was sent a preview link and watched the movie while eating a Vegemite sandwich. I liked This Sucks and thought it was very socially aware for a film shot in 9 days. We're in a global pandemic, no one has a narrative arc! This Sucks is a black comedy set during Christmas 2020. Chronically depressed Jess, her LGBTQ best friend, chatty roommate, and ex-boyfriend struggle to survive COVID quarantine. Each character has a red-faced demon that follows them, a physical manifestation of their inner depression. This podcast contains themes around filmmaking, depression, racism, and the importance of “found families.” This Sucks Movie Trailer More Info: https://linktr.ee/noelanderson Start Your Own Blog and Get $25 Credit Produced by Harlequin Ink

You know that moment when you start a project? The exciting time when the idea is fresh and new, but then it starts to loose its shine? You might even say to yourself “This sucks, why did I ever think this could be any good?” As the project continues to be difficult “This Sucks turns into I Suck”. All of us have heard the voice of the Inner Critic and in this episode, Angie and Josh dive deep into those murky waters and discuss how to deal with the Inner Critic and turn it into an Inner Mentor.
Hey everyone – just in case you hadn’t noticed, this whole situation really sucks. I know this seems obvious and it is. But the fact that it’s obvious and that we’re all experiencing it, doesn’t make it suck any less. It sucks. Totally and completely. I just thought it might be important to acknowledge the suckitude. I’ve been seeing (virtually, of course, not so much IRL because I don’t see much IRL) a lot of people working really hard to be okay, to make a positive out of this giant negative and I’m seeing a lot of folks really suffer because of it. I think the American strategy of thinking positive and putting on a brave face is starting to really crack at the seams. I was in a shop the other day and when I asked the cashier how he was doing, he said, very brightly, “I have no complaints!” I found it very jarring, frankly. No complaints? Really? None? I did not say so, though. I just sputtered something, matching his cheeriness, like, “No complaints? Wow. Well, that’s great!” To keep reading This Sucks visit the Songs for the Struggling Artist blog. Does this describe you? (takes deep breath)(realizes he is describing himself)(realizes he is talking about himself in the third person and this letter is already off to a strange start)If you aren’t working on something, you feel guiltyIf you are relaxing too much, you get this pit in your stomach feeling like there is “some opportunity” you are missing by being “lazy”Paradoxically, you feel BEST after you’ve busted your ass for a 12 hour day and can’t possibly work another minute. If any of those describe you, congratulations, you are JUST LIKE ME!A CLASSIC CASE OF “THE WORKAHOLIC”!Oh, it’s pretty miserable being us. Yes, we are usually extremely driven. And also extremely successful. But do we REALLY enjoy it? Eh… hard to say. Here’s what I’ve done recently (past 6 months) to try to actually enjoy my life and stop feeling like a workaholic ALL the time.1) Write this ONE sentence EVERYWHEREI’m serious. You’re going to want to write this down. put it on your mirror. Maybe tattoo it somewhere on your body (i’ve actually considered this).Ready?—-> Am I Inventing Things to Do to Avoid the Important? That is my absolute favorite quote from Tim Ferris’ classic book, The 4 Hour Workweek. It pretty much summarizes ALL of the issues that I have being a workaholic. Issue #1 -> If I’m not working I feel bad and like I’m wasting time. Well, the truth of the matter is that JUST WORKING for the sake of WORKING doesn’t actually achieve anything. We all understand this, but we OFTEN FORGET IT. This quote -> Am I Inventing Things to Do to Avoid the Important?Reminds me that it’s really ONLY the IMPORTANT things that move the needle (see 80:20 rule from other letters). If I start knocking out the important things FIRST, I immediately feel better about relaxing a bit. Issue #2 -> Literally inventing things to do. We all do it as workaholics. Make up something “super important” that we need to do right then and there to feel “accomplished for the day”. But when I remember this sentence -> Am I Inventing Things to Do to Avoid the Important? And I really think of the “inventing things to do” part…IT HITS ME. Do I really want to look back on my life, and remember it as a haze of invented (READ: Made up) tasks that I gave myself that didn’t really matter? Of course I don’t. 2) Remind yourself you are going to die. Might sound morbid. Actually scratch that it definitely is morbid. But it works. (I stole it from Steve Jobs so… it’s basically a bulletproof strategy :)But seriously, that’s pretty sage advice right there…Would you want to spend the last day of your life obsessively checking your email? Of course not. 3) Imagine it all going to hell in a handbasket. If you want a more detailed guide on how to do this, please see my other letter -> “The #1 Happiness Hack” -> https://thekaleletter.substack.comSeriously. It’s time to imagine the WORST case scenario. Whenever I get the “workaholic jitters” (feeling in my stomach like I’m not working hard enough) it’s usually about a specific thing. So, what do I do?I take that specific thing I’m worried about not doing right that second. And picture the WORST CASE SCENARIO. I mean the worst. Like, let’s say I’m worked up about not working on one of these letters…So I picture it going really badly….I don’t send the letter.Someone complains. More people complain.A lawsuit is filed against me. DANG. THIS SUCKS. But if that’s the worst it can truly get….Then, automatically, my brain starts to think…Well, if that happened…I would just refund ALL subscribers. Sure that would suck.I’d lose some money. But then the lawsuit would be dead in the water. And I would be free as a bird!IMMEDIATELY I FEEL BETTER!!!This literally works for anything. Try it. Okay cool, in the spirit of not being a workaholic, I’m going to stop writing now :)If this resonated with you, or you think it would resonate with someone else…Please let me know in the comments, smash that like button, subscribe to this letter, and SHARE it with someone who you think it would help.I write this letter 5x a week and it comes with a podcast version. Subscribe if you haven’t yet, I won’t let you down.Kale Get on the email list at thekaleletter.substack.com

Vocal HERspective is back this week with a...slightly different kind of episode. For the first time since Episode 1, it's just the hosts and, while it's officially named the "Hosts' Check-in," we probably could have just called it "This Sucks." Tune in for this very unfiltered conversation about the state of the universe according to Amanda and Rachael. It's not all doom and gloom - this episode also includes a look back at some of the episodes that have made the biggest impressions - ones you'll want to go back and listen to. Oh, and no animals were harmed in the making of this episode, but Moo and Gryffindor surely do sum up how we're feeling so they take center stage on the graphic!

In Episode 55, Bradford and Craig tackle five more (mostly) baseball topics. 1. So we beat on, boys against the current, borne ceaselessly back into the town: Baseball is officially back, although it's probably a bad idea and they made the process as messy as possible.2. Bad Medicine: About it being a bad idea...3. Let's play, too: The Grand Ole Opry will have a Grand Ole Taxi Squad.4. Haha, This Sucks, Man: Should baseball be coming back at all?5. This may possibly be the BIGGEST what if in Moncton Sports history!! Due to Covid19 the CHL has decided to shut down the season, playoffs through all 3 leagues as well as for the first time in History The Memorial Cup! "This Sucks" was the theme of this show and for very good reason, as we try to put into words the disappointment and where the Wildcats go from here. This was the last regular season show of the season, so I wanna take a moment to give a special thanks to Jeremy for continuing to be the fans favourite Co-Hoster, to the Sponsors Eric Murray Real Estate and the Pumphouse Brewery. To all the guests that we have had on this show we can't thank you enough for helping to make this show better and of course to ALL OUR FANS..our debt to you can never be paid and for that we THANK YOU! We are going anywhere, when news breaks we'll be here, we may have some special guests this summer and of course the draft we'll have it covered! As for next season, we'll be right back here weekly talking about this team and where it needs to go and how it's going during the 25th Anniversary of YOUR MONCTON WILDCATS! Thank you again for all your support Adam and Jeremy
There is going to be a very good chance that you think you know what I'm going to say on this podcast, but you don't. I can promise you that, because up until about 12 hours ago, I didn't even know what I was going to be saying on this podcast. I actually had an interview scheduled this week, but aren't we living in a time when we never know what's coming? This podcast wasn't in the cards for me either, so please keep listening until the end. David Radke will be joining me on today's show. In order to earn a living, I create content. I write books. I travel and I speak. I write online courses and make funny videos. I advertise for companies that I love and trust. I do television sometimes. All of this has been upended in the last two weeks. Just like your life has been upended. All of the dates on my calendar for travel and speaking for the next several months are gone. Every one of them. Like most of you, I have a side hustle. David and I have been working on the relaunch of Ink since November, but David suggested that we go with the relaunch of a course that would be more timely right now. He suggested we work on the relaunch of This Sucks...But God Is Good. Show Notes: [04:38] Melissa agrees with David that now is the time for this course. [05:03] Melissa wants to come out of this with clarity and answers. She wants to be better and not worse. Lean in and not lean out. [06:22] We need to take advantage of this time and be wise with the time that we have been given. [07:00] We are going to relaunch This Sucks... But God Is Good. It's an online course that you take at your pace. It's a weekly email with videos. You get one lesson each Monday for six weeks. [08:32] You also get questions to help you clarify the concepts in your mind. Each lesson has four to five bite sized video lessons that totals around 45 minutes to an hour. The downloads are also available as audio for listening anytime. [09:00] There are also summaries, outlines, and transcripts for those who like to read. And a like-minded Facebook community to interact with. Melissa will also be there and will have some live chats with you all. She will also take and post questions. [09:31] She's there for you, answering your questions and challenging you as we go along. [09:55] Thousands of people have gone through this course already. If you have, go back through it and jump back into the group. The season you are in now is totally different than the season you were in. [11:01] Melissa created this course based on the journey that her and David went through suffering from infertility, miscarriages, and the birth and death of their son. [11:38] It's been for every woman and man who has been angry at God, because somewhere your train went off the tracks. [12:42] There is freedom in your life that is available to you through this course. [13:24] This course is regularly $67. We know you have so much going on that we can't offer it to you for that price. Because of the times we are in and what's going on we are going to offer this course to everyone for $1. [14:34] When you pay your dollar, you are free to pay whatever amount you want. You pay what you want to pay and what feels right for you. [17:21] If you've never taken a course like this, this is something that you have never experienced. [18:04] Melissa wants to share what she's been taught by a God that she finds so loving and so accepting. [18:32] This isn't your Grandma's bible study. We meet you where you are. [19:06] We love you so much. Thanks for joining us on Ordinary People Ordinary Things. Be sure to subscribe to our podcast on iTunes and leave a nice review. Just like your mother taught you. TITLE I Wasn't Invited...there’s more. Sigh…. GUEST Solo Episode EPISODE OVERVIEW Is it ok to NOT want information about a situation that may have felt hurtful to us? If we continue to have strong feelings about it, does it mean we’re not healing? Is it possible to feel uncomfortable, AND be healing at the same time? Do I regret releasing any of these episodes about the situation? What does self-compassion have to do with all of this? No matter what feelings come up, ALL feelings are welcome, and need to be honored! HIGHLIGHTS How to take care of ourselves when we feel uncomfortable and not ready Is it ok to not pick up your phone when you feel rattled when someone calls I feel like I was 12 years old again. I felt really anxious Feelings of shame, and guilt came up for me, and it was uncomfortable When something happens and we have a strong emotional response, if we’re verbal processors, it can help to talk to someone who is safe What do we do when shame surfaces and we feel like we did something wrong We can have strong emotional responses, but it doesn’t mean that we haven’t “worked through” our stuff When we have strong emotional responses, we can often attach a negative meaning, but it’s not the truth We can feel strong feelings, and still be courageous even if we’re feeling fear When we have strong feelings, we often feel like we have to justify why we’re having strong feelings Others have a right to invite whomever they want to and they don’t ever have to include us Others have a right to post on social media There is no right or wrong, and no one is to blame If it brings up feelings for us, we get to focus on the healing we need to do It’s really important to start talking about these things with safe people who can support us No matter what feelings come up (joy, sadness, jealousy, anxiety, depression), all of our feelings are ok We need to find ways to honor all the feelings that come up We need to get support We need to use tools We can reflect on the conversation and situation if we need to make sense out of it When we get stressed or have things to do, we have our internal “taskmaster” show up My “taskmaster” generally lacks empathy and just wants to get stuff done It’s also important to talk about how we’re impacted by other’s behavior (if they are safe people that can engage with us) It’s really important to talk about our expectations We may have a plan, but not communicate it to someone else, and it can cause a rift if we don’t communicate There is no right or wrong way of doing things If we’re able to communicate; the recommunicate and recommunicate. It’s about going back in and doing what we need to do understand and to be understood This is about our imperfection, our humanity, about showing up and being in the messy middle, and not know what the outcome is going to be What happens when we have bumps; how do we process; what do we do when we’re having a harder time letting it go If someone gives us a “valid” reason when we got hurt, does it mean that we shouldn’t have had a reaction? Sometimes we see things as “either, or” then I realized there was another perspective Is it ok to NOT want information about a situation where we felt hurt I felt like I “should” be open to hearing information, which made me feel guilty, and somewhat anxious, and I doubted myself and felt like I wasn’t doing it “right.” We get to choose what we want in our life Gremlins will come up for us My gremlins told me I shouldn’t be talking about this on a podcast Is it wrong to process what goes on for me publicly? Is it “worth” it if it helps others? I want to model how as deep feelers and thinkers how we go through difficult situations When we overdo it, we may feel vulnerable and tend to take things more personally We can observe and know that we will come back to balance again We will get activated, and it may take time to restore and get our balance again Setting limits and boundaries can feel challenging to us, and it may bring up things for us We need to trust ourselves; be gentle with ourselves and have lots of self-compassion We can trust that we know what’s right for us at that moment Give yourself permission to be exactly where you’re at today PODCAST HOST Patricia Young hosts the podcast Unapologetically Sensitive, and works with Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) helping them to understand their HSP traits, and turning their perceived shortcomings into superpowers. Hoo boy, y'all were really stoked on us getting to some filler. But we've gotta be frank: why? This SUCKS. Sure, we've got Rock Lee doin' his thing and eating some mega spicy curry and a good Tsunade/Guy scene, but y'all? This is rough. We haven't even seen Raiga's face yet and he's already the worst. At least there's a bunch of terrible Wolverines? It's NARUSHOW!

About two years ago, I was on staff at a church as a worship pastor. My career took a bit of the turn, and I found myself traveling and speaking and writing a book. Eventually, I had to step down from the position at the church, and it killed me. My new career was exciting, but I realized that I was having trouble keeping up with everything, because I wasn't organized. About eight months ago, my husband the Attorney General left his job to come on board and help manage me. He realized he couldn't keep me on track or else he would've done it years ago. We realized, we had to find a person that was so organized that they could keep me in line without being too organized and causing me to run away. We found the amazing Erin Cuccio to hire as my Executive Assistant. Today, you get to meet the wonderful Erin. You can find Erin here: Beauty for Ashes Erin Cuccio on LinkedIn Show Notes [04:11] Erin is excited to be here. [04:52] How podcasts should be in the 30 to 40 minute range, and you can't talk about yourself all the time. [05:20] How Melissa loves having an assistant and it makes her feel so proud. [05:35] How Melissa and Erin connected. Erin's husband started a business in Lufkin. They were looking for a church and found Melissa's church. Erin thought Melissa was hilarious and started following her. [06:41] A few months later, The Red Ribbon Week video came out and Erin's friends were sharing the video. [07:06] Eventually, Erin went through Melissa's online bible study course This Sucks but God Is Good. [07:17] At the end of the course, Erin and David did a live video saying that they wanted to hire an assistant. [08:00] Melissa made a Mother's Day phone call to women who were experiencing some form of loss. When Melissa called, Erin was able to share some of her story and how she followed Melissa in the first place. [09:09] Melissa remembered Erin from the call when Erin decided to apply for the assistant position. [09:44] Melissa and Erin's personalities are very different, but they do get along. Working with Melissa has been a growing experience for Erin. [10:28] Erin said If she was young and single, she would've moved to Nashville and worked in PR and booking for a celebrity. She thinks it's amazing that God has opened that door for her in Lufkin, Texas. [10:55] Erin wasn't nervous about the podcast at all. She used to work in radio. She was a worship pastor. She worked in flower arrangements and a t-shirt company. She is a Renaissance woman. [12:19] Erin has always been independent and ambitious. She started working when she was 16. She worked for TCBY, she was a DJ for a Christian radio station, worked at a Christian bookstore, worked for an electrical contractor, worked in medical records, a real estate agent, a teacher, she ran a home-based flower and t-shirt business, she led worship, and now she works for Melissa. [13:32] This is been one of the first times in Erin's life that she has been able to do one thing. [13:52] Erin doesn't consider herself flighty, she just has somewhat of a gypsy soul. [14:19] Erin is so solid and grounded, she is really well-suited to bring Melissa back down to reality. [15:01] Melissa doesn't do one-on-one really well. Just the thought of it makes her really nervous. Traveling with Erin is really easy. [16:39] After Melissa speaks, Erin brings her chocolate and a Coke. [17:57] How David is very thorough. [18:32] We have a big event coming up May 4th and 5th 2018. It is right here in Lufkin, Texas. The Social Event of the season. It's a Friday night and most of Saturday. [19:29] Women tend to be nurturers by nature. It's important to remind women that they need to nurture themselves. They need time to refresh and refuel. [20:02] Melissa has so much to offer in her message, so to give women a weekend is a wonderful gift and a way to just hang out and talk about things that are important. [20:52] This is the first annual social event of the season. This is a social event for the churched and the unchurched the hopeful and the hopeless. [22:07] This weekend gives you a place to sit at the table. This weekend is going to have value and give women something that will refresh their hearts. There will be fun and laughter and also learning and growing and connecting with other women. [24:44] Dress comfortable, prepare to have a good time, and if you come alone you won't be leaving alone. [25:17] We love community. Erin and I also have one terrible horrible thing in common and that is that we have both lost a child. When you walk through something like this, you better have community. [27:05] How having an online community and bible study has helped teach Erin that it is so important to have a community backing you up. [27:46] Community is the secret to growing and living your best life. [28:48] At women's core, they want to belong. [29:16] This year's theme is called Live Known. It's so easy for us to hide behind things. Become what you truly are by living known. Women want to be seen. [31:09] How identity is a huge crisis that we all struggle with. [32:57] We are going to do heart work and ask ourselves tough questions and answer them. [33:32] There is a sense of empowerment in knowing who you really are. [34:35] We need to stop pushing our desires and passions down. God gave us potential for a reason and Melissa wants to help women find that potential. [37:53] Erin's lightning round questions. [40:12] Erin is one of God's most shockingly we never saw it coming gifts to Melissa and David. Just meeting Erin alone would make going to the event worthwhile. [41:38] How women push themselves down, because they always want other people to feel important. Women need to keep in mind how they feel. Thanks for joining us on Ordinary People Ordinary Things. Events in our lives are what shape us and make us who we are. In this episode, I share a heartfelt true story that shook my faith to its core. I begin with an excerpt from my book that is really the story that made me who I am today. I also talk about how this story is the basis for my course This Sucks... But God Is Good. This story is about my struggles trying to get pregnant and stay pregnant, and one of the sweetest and holiest Christmas mornings that I had ever had. This is the story of an experience that shook my faith to its core, and how David reminded me that our faith is all that we have ever known. You can find Melissa here: Podcast Web PageFacebook Page@MsMelissaRadke on Instagram@msmelissaradke on Twitter Show Notes [01:02] I share an excerpt from my upcoming book that is the story of what made me who I am today. [10:25] When my faith was shaken to its core, and I was ready to be done. David said, "we can't, he's all we've ever known." [11:09] How this podcast episode was originally intended to be about my best friend preparing for her spring wedding. [11:29] A glitch in the original recording, made me realize that I had to share the story that has made me who I am today. [12:05] My children are my Purple Heart. They are the rewards that I got after my war was over. [12:23] This is the story that I want to tell the world. I'm going to tell that story to you today. [13:00] I started writing my story down about a year ago. [13:26] I wrote the story down in the form of a course. Today, somewhere between 1500 and 2000 women have taken my course entitled This Sucks... But God Is Good. [13:50] I had to apologize to my mom for the title, but it came from an article I wrote several years ago where I said that everyone who has suffered from infertility should wear a shirt that says This Sucks... But God Is Good. [14:35] Broken and hurting people are walking around everywhere, and we don't even know it. [15:11] I began to write down the things that I learned through the process of being angry, hating, learning, watching, and needing him. [16:27] What I'm teaching isn't your typical bible study. There are a lot of pop culture references mixed in. [16:47] I'm just a woman like you who wanted a child. [17:20] This course may go down as the craziest thing I've ever done. [17:38] It will be the thing that I'm the most proud of other than raising those kids. [18:13] We talk about bible stories. We talk about how I got pissed off at the “no” I was getting from God. [18:29] We talk about clenching our fists and holding tightly to the things we think we must have. [18:59] You don't get homework every week, instead you get heart work. [19:46] We have many hurting women who took the course. Women whose husbands have left them for someone they thought was a friend. [20:11] We have women who have been hurt in all kinds of ways taking the course. [20:31] We also have women who have done the hurting taking the course. [23:22] Everyone has a story. What is the story you are carrying around? Maybe you have been carrying it around for so long you don't even remember what it was. [23:53] I want to help you get to whatever is at the core of your issue. I want to help you get rid of whatever is poisoning you. [24:29] There is only one person who can do that for you. He did it for me. The problem is sometimes we are angry at him. [25:21] It's time to stop running and stop blaming. [26:00] I have two beautiful healthy children. God never turned his back on me. [27:08] This week, I just have to talk about what was in my heart. [27:43] This is a six week course that you can do in the privacy of your own home, your desk, or wherever you are at. You can do it at your own pace. [31:35] You can be whole. You can be put back together and be better than you were before. Thanks for joining us on Ordinary People Ordinary Things. This may be the most gut wrenching of them all. For a team that’s suffered three straight NLDS game five losses before tonight, including one in which they led 6-0, that’s telling. Of course, in true tragic and familiar fashion the Nationals found yet another way to lose in spectacular fashion; painful fashion. Where do we go from here? Mat, Stevie, and Joe discuss on a depressing end of season podcast as the Nationals fall to the Cubs at home. This was it DC, our best shot at defeating the curse, but just like the Wizards losing in an elimination game, Captials too, and Redskins losing a win-and-your-in game last season, the Nationals couldn't pull out a win when the city needed it most. This SUCKS! Listen and share... (Photo Credit: New York Post)
