It's Hertime.

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 6, 2020 16:40

Today Jess and Cody continue their conversation with Ashleigh DiLello on the power of positivity. The power of positivity doesn't just sound good, it's actually been studied by neuroscientists, through brain spect imaging. Every thought releases some type of chemical. When positive thoughts are generated, when you're feeling happy, or optimistic, cortisol decreases and the brain produces more serotonin, creating a feeling of well-being. The brain has heightened prefrontal activity and positivity results in enhanced mental functions. Positive emotions actually widen our span of attention and they change our perception and focus on more of the "we" instead of the "me". On the other hand, negative emotions are proven to slow down brain function, make it difficult to process thoughts, decreases activity in the cerebellum, and impacts the left temporal lobe (fear factor), affecting mood, memory and impulse control.Today the discussion revolves around the concept of neuroplasticity, which is the brain's ability to adapt and change. Our brain loves consistency, and it loves to function on autopilot, or in other words, out of habit. When we have consistent, repeated thoughts, neuropathways are created in the brain. These pathways become deeper and more ingrained and become more habitual each time our thoughts follow this path. If we have negative thoughts consistently, we build a habit of automatic negative thoughts, aka "ants". By the way we are all wired to have negative thoughts, for survival purposes, we use negative thoughts to imagine potential threats and problems, and negative thoughts can help us to solve threats and problems before we get into trouble. But, these imagined threats can also work against us and turn our minds into "random negative thought generators" which isn't protecting us anymore, and is actually hurting us. Ashleigh shares with us that even though we have very ingrained neuropathways established, our brains are very plastic and are able to be "rewired". She shares with us, in this episode, tips on how to interrupt "ants" and how to create new pathways with positive thoughts and actions.  Did you learn something new today? Please let us know! Today Jess and Cody are joined by special guest Ashleigh DiLello. These ladies are talking about the power of our minds and the difference it makes to choose powerful thoughts that focus on positivity. Ashleigh DiLello has accomplished many things in her life, she is a Wellness Expert, Mother, Wife, and you may know her as a Professional Dancer from Broadway and TV shows like So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing With The Stars. But, what many don't know about her is that at the age of 13, she was suddenly faced with a life-threatening illness that caused her to give up all of her dreams, and instead have to fight everyday for her life for four years. She shares with us how she survived, how she refused to accept her diagnosis, and how she stopped listening to other's thoughts, and instead used the power of her own thoughts and feelings to regain her health and strength. She not only beat the odds and defied death, but she went on to exceed everyone's expectations of what her potential could be. This episode is filled with inspiration and is only one out of two episodes Cody and Jess recorded with her. Listen in today as Ashleigh shares her story, and think about how the power of positivity can help you in your life, and then tune in tomorrow for the rest of the story and actionable tips ashleigh share on how to disrupt your negative thought loops.Did you learn something new today? Today Jess and Cody talk about the tremendous difference it can make when we cut down our sugar intake. If we can stop eating sugar, we can feel more energy, have little to no craving or cramps, have less hot flashes, and so much more! Sugar not only causes major spikes and dips in mood and energy, it can also disrupt one of the most powerful hormones in the body: insulin. And, insulin is closely connected to all of the other hormones in our body, including estrogen and testosterone. So, even if you're not worried about your waistline, cutting back on or eliminating sugar will help rebalance hormones, and dramatically ease our most dreaded cycle symptoms.Listen in to learn four effective strategies Cody and Jess use to balance their hormones and curb their sugar habits.Did you learn something new today? Is friendship the medicine you are missing? We talk so much about supplements, food, exercise, and stress relieving strategies, but solid friendships are just as vital to our overall health, happiness and survival. As women, it's in our DNA that we are compelled to connect. We instinctually know that to survive, we need to nurture supportive relationships. In fact, it is shown that women are wired to seek connection when they are under stress, because when women feel secure in relationships and feel loved, they are able to release more of the calming and happy hormone, oxytocin. Releasing more "happy hormones" in the body, through attention, affection, and interaction, is healing for our adrenal glands and leads to optimal hormonal health and balance. The best kind of friends to seek are the ones that influence you to have healthy thoughts, to eat nutritiously, to move often, and to live a healthy lifestyle. Today Jess and Cody share ways that you can make friends that will support your highest self and nourish and strengthen you. Friends are the family that we choose, so choose wisely. The episode starts off with us explaining how we currently identify sexually and the complicated journey from childhood until now where we are finally comfortable with who we are. Sexuality is hugely influenced by a religious upbringing and can sometimes be incredibly damaging. They bring up the struggles of sexuality, the harmful purity culture, the idea of casual sex, I Kissed Dating Goodbye, and why Jess read Every Young Man’s Battle. We realized that much of our sexual “sin” was pure thought crime (i.e. lusting) and how this ultimately leads to dissociation from our bodies. Surprisingly there are also some good things about growing up in a conservative sexual culture that come up. But then the conversation shifts back to the weird, heteronormative concept of virginity and how in actuality sex is nuanced, individual, and personal.

Create A Radical Sense Of Awareness This episode is all about unpacking some of the stigmas and privileges that we can all unknowingly carry, and taking a step back without judgment but instead with curiosity to keep asking yourself the hard questions when it comes to your relationship with your body.  Jess is on a mission to create a radical sense of awareness and help women unapologetically show up as who they are. Today is all about gaining skills to develop your own sense of liberation, whatever that may be for you, and removing judgment towards what you are feeling in a healthy way.   You are more than just your body, and it is through the separation of your identity and your body that you can deal with what is really going on internally and heal yourself from the inside out. By asking the hard questions and feeling where the healing needs to come from you can learn to care for yourself and become your own autonomous agent.  Are you ready to start on your path to liberation? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section on the episode page.   In This Episode Learn about the role of desirability privilege and desirability politics in our society (10:10) Deconstructing body autonomy and being aware of your own motivations (20:12) How to embrace your journey of liberation as an experience just for you (23:20)) Tips for living a liberated life and showing up as who you are unapologetically (26:05) Ways to use the RAIN acronym to process your emotions in a healthy way (28:42)   Quotes “Being thin and pretty as a woman should not be a pre-requisite for the value that we’re given, nor should it be a requirement for our existence.” (5:46) “Any time we have what we call the happiness destination paradox, where we imagine that our emotions, our internal world, would be different if our external world was different. That is when you have that chasm, and you are taking internal issues that should be worked on internally and you are projecting them onto your external appearance.” (15:07) “I am here to ask the questions to get you thinking, and then what you do with that is completely your responsibility.” (21:01) “All that I can ask for is a radical sense of awareness.” (22:23) “I don’t think that the world benefits from women who are living to please other people. I think that actually what we desperately need, for kindness and compassion and to solve the world’s problems, in our individual lives and in the larger aspect of the world, is women showing up in their completely whole, authentic selves.” (26:08)   Links Wholly Healed Website Follow Jess on Instagram Enroll in Steph’s Intuitive Eating Group Coaching Plan Here Emotions Wheel Nutritional Therapy Association Join The Core 4 Facebook Club Here Harder to Kill Radio is sponsored by the Nutritional Therapy Association. And anything that interferes with that will cause more stress which is then going to start this spiral into effect where you get the nutrient deficiencies and then you get lower stress tolerance so you feel the stress more deeply and then they are caught in this vicious cycle.” (15:29) “I realized that nobody was talking about the health of the body as being connected to the function of the brain and the mind. So if we were going to help kids develop into their best self, which is really what we wanted to do as teachers, we were missing this whole part of helping them understand their body and feed their body.” (18:18) “Sometimes food isn’t the place to start, sometimes connection is the place to start.” (19:14) “One of the best ways to take care of our own emotional needs is to nourish our own bodies, and it is the last thing we think about as a parent.” (31:17) “We have got to just hold onto the vision that we have for our kids and for their health and the knowledge that we know more about nutrition than they do.” (35:18) Links Jess Sherman Website Raising Resilience by Jess Sherman Join the Raising Resilience Community Here   Find the full show notes for this episode here Keep up with all things Love Is Medicine Follow Razi on Facebook |Instagram
