There was still this void. I had not found God and I didn't even know that that's what I was looking for.” - Nikki Walton “I love myself and it's not in that superficial, surface-level love. It's like I went from outer beauty to inner beauty to beyond beauty entirely, and I appear beautiful to some because of His light shining through me.” - Nikki Walton “I listen not for [God’s] voice booming, but for His silence, for His stillness, for His peace, And then I feel His stillness. I feel His peace. I know I'm in contact with Him when I feel lighter.” - Nikki Walton “You can still be aware of that humbled nature, that humbled posture inside. That way, when you go out into the world, even though you are smiling and walking upright, you're still bowing to Jesus everywhere you go.” - Nikki Walton “I had to learn through time that God doesn't just save us, He keeps us.” - Toire Hope Petersen “I do think that God speaks to us in the way that we can understand how to do what's next.” - Tori Hope Petersen “Our brokenness does not just point to the deficit in us. Sometimes our brokenness points to the disciples that we are, points to our faithfulness.” - Tori Hope Petersen “God does not hate you and He doesn't want you to hate yourself. He wants you to embrace who He has called you to be, because when we do that, we can walk out the calling that God has placed on our life. God did a good job making you and you’re allowed to be loved.” - Tori Hope Petersen “God is just so glad when we show up to be in His presence and to pray. He just welcomes me with open arms. Hi listeners! Welcome back to the podcast! This is season 5 (can you believe it?) and episode 117! I took a few weeks off to enjoy my family over the holidays and to spend some time on a few exciting things I have in the works, so I appreciate your patience as I took a break from putting out the podcast. But now we're back and there are a lot of exciting episodes coming up in this season and I can't wait to introduce them to you! Did you know that 20% of the youth that age out of the foster care system are instantly homeless. Tori Hope Petersen was one of those young adults who decided it would be easier to go it alone than have to navigate the system that caused her so much pain, having been in 12 foster homes from the ages of 12-18. But Tori was blessed to have mentors to come alongside her and help, eventually becoming adopted by her track coach. Tori's mom came from brokenness and generational curses and did the best she knew how, but Tori has become intentional about breaking those curses in her own family. She also does advocacy in the foster care system and has written two books, Fostered: One Woman's Powerful Story of Finding Faith and Family Through Foster Care, and her just released book, Breaking the Patterns that Break You: Healing from the Pain of Your Past and Finding Real Hope That Lasts. As I spoke to Tori, I realized that, even though she's still so young, her experiences have made her wise beyond her years. If Tori's story encouraged you would you kindly leave a rating and a review on your favorite podcast app? You can go to my Facebook or Instagram at Building Strong Homes and find a video there that will show you how to do that if you're not familiar with the process. Tori Hope Petersen has a story to tell - one that gets to the heart of how we find our way through trauma and self-doubt to a place of self-acceptance and purpose. As someone who grew up in the foster care system, emancipating at 18 without a forever family, Tori had to navigate a lot of uncertainty and pain. But through that journey, she's learned invaluable lessons about the power of community, the necessity of vulnerability, and the freedom that comes from embracing your own worth. In our conversation, Tori unpacks the lies she used to believe - that self-love was selfish, that she wasn't worthy. These were patterns passed down, not just in her own life, but across generations. And unraveling them required immense courage. But Tori discovered that the act of sharing her story, the good and the bad, was integral to her own healing. It was a way of breaking cycles, of finding belonging, of using her voice to speak life into others facing similar struggles. Tori's story is a testament to resilience, to the transformative power of vulnerability. This is a conversation that gets at the heart of how we overcome the lies we've internalized, how we learn to love ourselves, and how we step into the fullness of who we're called to be.Tori Hope Petersen is an author, speaker, Bible teacher, and lover of people. Through her lens, you'll journey across terrains of adversity where she discovered her sanctuary in the rhythm of track and field, serving as both her escape and her identity. The revelations of Tori's past and the pivotal role of AncestryDNA in her heartwarming reunion with her biological lineage sets the stage for a conversation that's as profound as it is enlightening. Her upcoming book, a beacon on the horizon set to illuminate the path to generational healing in February 2025, weaves a tantalizing thread throughout our discussion. With Tori as our guide, we wade through the complexities of trauma, the healing embrace of genuine support, and the strides one can take toward emancipation and triumph, even within the oft-challenging foster care system. Yet, the canvas of her life extends beyond personal conquests, as she propels us into the urgent advocacy for child abuse prevention, and the crucial work of organizations like Place of Hope in Florida, where the staggering statistics of abuse reports from 2020 call us all to action. The conversation takes a turn into the darker corridors of human trafficking, only to emerge into the light of storytelling as a powerful means of transformation and empowerment, where trauma is not a shackle but a springboard for connection and strength. In the warm embrace of hospitality and advocacy, Tori unveils the connections between opening her home, her culinary passions, and her unwavering mission to foster change in the lives of children. Her heartfelt gratitude for the love and grace that have fueled her journey is palpable, inviting us to reflect on the power of giving back. What do we do with the messages that imprint themselves on our souls from our earliest memories? How do we overcome the most difficult parts of our story when our circumstances seemingly want to make us a statistic? For author, speaker and advocate Tori Hope Petersen, growing up in an abusive home and entering the foster care system at a young age made her start to believe that her life didn't matter. But somehow in the midst of the darkest moments, God met her and showed her His unfailing love in the face of people's failures to love and care for her and that her life had a greater purpose. Since that season, Tori has written about her experience through the system in her book, Fostered: One Woman's Powerful Story of Finding Faith and Family through Foster Care and has become an advocate for others. She is also now a mom, undoing the brokenness from her family of origin and creating a beautiful tapestry called family through biological, adoption and foster parenting. In this important conversation, Aubrey sits with Tori to discuss the questions that can come when you're wrestling through a life riddled with pain, the value of community in healing from our trauma, and how the Church can become the foundation for care and love for those in the foster care system. Whether or not your life has been touched by foster care, this episode will remind you that no matter the messages you received as a child, God's message for you is clear: you are dearly loved and none of your pain is ever wasted.   Website: https://www.torihopepetersen.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/torihopepetersen/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/torihopepetersen/ Book: Fostered: One Woman's Powerful Story of Finding Faith and Family through Foster Care Are you a pastor or church leader who wants to see redemptive healing take place in your church? Today, on Karl and Crew Mornings, we continued our weekly theme, "Jesus Saved the World", and we discussed how Jesus changed the meaning of family and the value of children. In Jesus time, He radically changed the culture's view of marriage and even elevated it to loving the church. He also called the children unto Him, and shockingly claimed that having the faith of a child is the greatest of all. One of the greatest witnesses is the example of a faithful, biblical family. We also talked with speaker, foster advocate, and author Tori Hope Petersen. Her new book is called "Fostered: One Woman's Powerful Story of Finding Faith and Family Through Foster Care". She shared her testimony of wanting a family as a foster child, and then becoming part of God's family. Finally, today was day 9 of our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway! As a young girl, Tori Hope Petersen grew up in a home where she experienced abuse. As a result, she was placed into the foster care system and remained there until she was 18. On today's edition of Family Talk, Tori discusses her testimony and memoir, Fostered: One Woman's Powerful Story of Finding Faith and Family through Foster Care. Learn how Tori's frequent moves between foster homes created instability, stress, and a lack of trust in relationships. But amazingly, she defied the odds and found Jesus in the process. She claimed Genesis 50:20 as her life verse, and as a result, she became an All-American track and field star at Hillsdale College and saw that what the devil meant for evil, God redeemed for her good. We have an amazing episode for you all today! Tori Petersen is our guest here on Rebuilding the Beast. She's a best-selling author, Mrs. Universe, a mother, a wife, and a child of the foster care system. Growing up, Tori was placed into foster care after men busted down her doors and took her and her sister. As she got older, she found out that it was for a drug bust and her mother was having mental health struggles. After in and out of about eleven homes, at the age of 18, Tori emancipated herself from the foster care system and found a forever home with her track coach. But that's not all we cover! The moment she realized that she was conceived out of abuse and the trauma her mother went through.Getting separated from her younger sister after Tori tried to report an incident at their then foster house. Teaching her unfortunately, to keep her head down and to not report things.Building a relationship with God and how He taught her how to forgive and love others.Good moments and families that she had in foster care and the lasting impact it gave her.Becoming exceedingly good at track.Creating a nonprofit called the Beloved Initiative that specializes in helping out foster care families.Getting told to do pageants, then entering in the Mrs. Universe pageant with a mindset of winning it all, then doing just that.Taking this new platform to continue to spread the word of God and creating awareness around the foster care system. How her proudest achievement is becoming a wife and a mother because she never thought she'd be able to have a stable family and home life. This episode got me emotional! God ordains the time and space we inhabit - sometimes that's one home for decades, sometimes it's 12 homes in 6 years and instant homelessness at age 18. It was the latter for Tori Petersen and for so many other children in the foster care system. Tori has accomplished a lot since then - 5 time State Champion in track and field, a book releasing August 30th, and even a Mrs. Universe 2022 title. But if you asked her how she got here, she would say it was because someone loved and served the “least of these.” (Matthew 25:40) She was the least of these. She experienced extreme difficulty while in foster care, but looking back she sees God's fatherly hand guiding her all along the way, loving her through the words and actions of her track coach, and now working through her and her husband to others as they model loving and serving the “least of these” for their own kids. Today's topic is fresh on my mind because I just turned in the second draft of the manuscript for my new book! The book won't be out until next year, but I am so excited about it! It will be my fifth book, and since many people don't realize how much actually goes into writing and publishing a book, I am using this episode to share the process with you! What I share in this episode should be helpful to just about any large, time-consuming project, not just writing and publishing a book. There was a time when writing books was incredibly stressful and was affecting the family and the business, and I had therefore decided not to write anymore. I touch upon what changed my mind and why it's no longer as stressful, which, again, I am hoping is going to be helpful to you when it comes to tackling large projects! I discuss how I outline and have to map out the book in advance and how and why I plan out one chapter at a time. I talk about the collaboration process - people whose help I enlisted - and how it is important for me to read the book out loud because it's easier for me to catch things like mistakes. You ideally want to write something that you are excited about and passionate about, and that's true of any big project, such as starting a business or writing a book. Consistency is so important, especially if you commit a block of time to it every day! I can't wait to share this book with you all! As of now, it is expected to be out in March of 2023, and we will of course be talking more about it as that gets closer! We really appreciate you tuning in again this week and hope that this insight has been helpful to you! If you have any further questions about writing a book and/or tackling a big project, feel free to email me at crystal@moneysavingmom.com! We would love to hear from you!
