Doctor What? Doctor Where? Stories of Rural Medicine in Victoria

Is there a “right time” to have kids, when you have a career in medicine? Perhaps that's not the right question. Instead, in this episode, two rural doctors speak about the “right way” to think about making decisions about family and career.Guests:Dr Holly Atkinson- General Physician and Director of General Medicine at  West Gippsland Healthcare Group in Warragul. She's a medical oncologist and palliative care specialist.Dr Alex Tai- Infectious Diseases Physician at West Gippsland Hospital and at Latrobe Regional Health in Traralgon. He also works at the Gippsland Region Public Health Unit. Both Holly and Alex discuss how they manage the busy-ness of being parents, with the demands of being a doctor. Holly is the mother of twin 7 year-old girls and she also has a 5 year old son. She recounts how she would walk the hospital wards with babies in a carrier, when she first returned to work. Holly also speaks about what having children at different stages of your career could look like from a work perspective; including the trainee years.Alex is the father of two primary-school aged boys and also cares for his wife, who has chronic fatigue syndrome. He discusses how he overcame feeling uneasy about asking for support from family and friends and how changing the type of medical work he does has given him greater flexibility.Ultimately, it is possible to have children and a great career in medicine. This episode offers some practical and philosophical advice on how to make it work.—For more information about the study and training opportunities across regional Victoria, head to the Monash Rural Health website.

The third of our Year In Beer 2024 podcasts finds us on home turf as we turn our attention to Victoria. It's undoubtedly been a tough year for many there, something that became very apparent when we started totting up the voluntary administrations, sales and closures from the past 12 months. Hospo trade has been down and suffered accordingly too, yet there's also been much to enjoy and plenty to celebrate, from great beers, new breweries and venues, to successful events and more.Joining Will and James to cast an eye over the year are Cherry Murphy and Jimmy Krekelberg. Cherry spent ten years with Blackhearts & Sparrows, many of those as the indie retail chain's beer buyer, curating their range, hosting diverse events, and putting together a number of fascinating collaborations.Jimmy is the founder and head brewer of Good Land Brewing in Traralgon, a brewery he founded after plying his trade at a number of breweries overseas. While his lager is their biggest seller, he's garnered a reputation as a brewer of some seriously out there and creative beers too, from voluptuous smoothie sours to hefty imperial stouts. As part of their chat about the year in beer in Victoria, Will and James also discuss this week's opening of Sailors Grave's Dunetown home in Gippsland, three years after they unveiled their plans.Start of guest segments: 23:32 – Cherry Murphy 33:41 – Jimmy Krekelberg The Crafty Pint's 2024 Year In Beer series is proudly presented by Mogwai Labs, leaders in liquid yeast solutions. Regional Victoria's Second-Wind Markets

Hotspotting

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 13, 2024 3:15

The markets currently attracting our focus at Hotspotting are the ones we call “the second wind markets”. These are locations which experienced strong capital from 2020 to 2022, have been in the post-boom pause/correction phase for the past 18 months or so, and are now poised for another period of price growth. There are few better places to find second-wind markets than Regional Victoria, as many of the key centres have exhibited that pattern over the past 3-4 years and are now showing the early signs of revival. Many of the suburbs of Ballarat are classic examples. The median house price for Sebastopol rose from $330,000 in 2020 to $475,000 by the end of 2022. There has been a price correction in the past 18 months but market activity is rising again and another period of price growth is expected. Eaglehawk in Ballarat rose from $325,000 in mid-2020 to $520,000 in early 2023, before the price graph evened out over the following 12-18 months. Bendigo displays similar patterns. The suburb of California Gully had a median house price of $300,000 in 2020, rising to $465,000 late in 2022. The price graph has flatlined since then, before showing the first signs of new growth in mid-2024. Similarly, Flora Hill lifted its median house price from $255,000 in 2020 to $450,000 in early 2023 – but the price graph has been flat over the past 12 months. Now sales activity is rising again, which is a forward indicator of impending price growth. Other markets in Regional Victoria have this pattern, which is a common one in real estate cycles with a period of strong growth followed by a period of correction or no growth, before the market embarks on the next growth cycle. Shepparton, Traralgon, Mildura, Wodonga, Warrnambool and many other Victoria regional centres have this pattern. They're all places with solid local economies and credentials for future growth. Most of them commonly have houses in the $400,000s and $500,000s, with low vacancy rates, so they present attractive features for property investors.

Regional Victoria Rising

Hotspotting

The Regional Victoria market continued to improve in 2023, following the lead from Melbourne, although not rising as dramatically as the capital city has recently.   As the year wore on, Regional Victoria built on the recovery evident in mid-year, with the number of rising locations almost doubling in the second half of 2023.   Two-thirds of locations have positive trends with their sales activity, which means buyer demand, although some locations have been slow to join the overall theme of revival and growth.   To put the Regional Victoria market into perspective, the 66% of locations with positive trends is a solid performance, but well short of Melbourne (87%), Brisbane (85%), Regional Queensland (76%) and Regional South Australia (74%).   Geelong continues to be a market leader in Victoria, with most of its suburbs on board with the state's recovery, led by locations such Armstrong Creek and Charlemont.   Bendigo has an equally positive market, with strong buyer demand for affordable suburbs like Eaglehawk which has a median house price $515,000 – a price level that's impossible to find in the Greater Melbourne area.   Ballarat is a little less bullish at this stage, but has been a very solid growth over the past five or so years.   The Cardinia LGA on the south-eastern fringe of Greater Melbourne has good momentum, led by the towns of Officer (median price $715,000) and Pakenham (median price $640,000).   The Mitchell LGA, on the northern outskirts of Greater Melbourne, continues to attract buyers from the capital city. All five of the main Mitchell Shire towns have positive trends, headed by Wallan and Seymour.   The Macedon Ranges LGA is also a solid performer, led by Kyneton, as is the Moorabool LGA headed by Darley and Bacchus Marsh.   The Latrobe Valley region east of Melbourne is characterised by consistent markets, including Moe (median price $365,000), and Newborough (median price $417,000) – again, with relative affordability a major attraction for home buyers and investors.   Other regional centres with good momentum include Wodonga, Wangaratta, Benalla, Bairnsdale, Paynesville, Drouin and Echuca.   Overall, the appeal of the Victoria market is that it provides affordable options in strong, growing regional cities like Bendigo, Geelong and Ballarat which are well connected to Melbourne by road and rail – as well as other options further afield like Shepparton, Mildura, Wodonga, Warrnambool and Traralgon.

When Colin Little walked away from his Caulfield training base late last year, he knew that retirement wasn't too far away. He intended to keep training at Pakenham in the immediate future, but an ironic twist of fate intervened. Early in March he made the snap decision to relinquish his licence. He joins us on the podcast to explain the reason for his hasty departure.  Colin talks of his attachment to Caulfield where he was born, and would spend his entire racing life. He reflects on the riding career of his jockey father Bill Little, who was one of many Australian jockeys to ride in India in the 1930's and 40's. He looks back on his own original apprenticeship to Rod Turvey and a subsequent transfer to a former champion jockey who was getting his training career under way in Melbourne. Col admits his riding career was brief and unspectacular. He pays tribute to the legendary Caulfield trained racehorse Lord who dominated weight for age racing in Melbourne in the late 50's and early 60's. Caulfield track regulars were in awe of him.   Col's training career started on a hobby basis. He would work a horse or two at first light before dashing off to his day job. He vividly remembers the thrill of training his first winner at Traralgon. It was a mare with a masculine name. In winning his first metropolitan race, he helped a famous jockey to win a premiership. You can hear the admiration in Col's voice when he talks of Testimony- the horse who launched his training career. Testimony won an amazing 13 city races. The horse was part owned by Joan Herman who became a very valued client for the Little stable. Colin pays tribute to his late wife Jacqui who died much too soon. He says Jacqui's artistic touch enabled them to renovate an old Caulfield home which nowadays has heritage listing.  The retired trainer pays a fitting tribute to his once in a lifetime horse El Segundo. He takes us through the ups and downs in the career of a horse whose four Gr 1 wins includes a W.S. Cox Plate in 2007. Col reflects on the veteran stayer who arrived at his place from Adelaide. Ista Kareem raced on for another two and a half years in Colin's care winning 6 races including a Sydney Cup. He talks of Blutigeroo, another second hand horse with whom he'd win the Gr 1 BMW at Rosehill. He picked up a Hobart Cup along the way. Colin pays tribute to some of the brilliant jockeys who rode for the stable over the years. He says he'll be closely monitoring the career of one of his favourites Vassilator. Col won five races with the chestnut, all at Flemington. He sent the horse to Lisa Jones at Somerville when he made the call to retire. It's a farewell chat with the man they once called “Mr Caulfield.”

The Traditional Custodians of Country are the people of the Kurnai Nation   True crime podcasts or episodes usually focus on just murders and missing people but that's not all there is in the field of crimes. Haunted Hills started out exploring a theory that criminals kept the legend going to give them space to keep on distilling illegally, making illegal coins. It shares a little about the small towns, as Robert Kennedy once said "Every society gets the kind of criminal it deserves. What is equally true is that every community gets the kind of law enforcement it insists on."   While I encourage people to play judge and jury, we are not re-adjudicating these crimes most of them occurred too long ago to be appropriate however, these discussions create a contrast of values.

It's fascinating to learn about how they lived what they did. Their presence gives us a glimpse into the lives of regular people in these towns. You don't have to believe in ghosts to enjoy the narrative. Not all spectres are fearsome and angry, some want to communicate, after all, they were people. It's not as though death steals our humanity usually the circumstances of life or choices we make do that. Urban History Planning History Conference 2020: Nick Phelps on edge cities and monorails

In this episode of This Must Be The Place Elizabeth reports from Launceston, Tasmania, from the Urban History Planning History conference. (Listeners should also note the earlier interview with Alysia Bennett at the same conference, offering a very different take on how to pronounce ‘Launceston'). As well as hearing from the UTas historic tram that periodically trundles through the expansive campus car park, (and from some local windiness), in this instalment we hear from Professor Nicholas (Nick) Phelps of the University of Melbourne. Nick describes how he went from being an economic geographer studying Croydon in the UK (“the butt of jokes”) and its attempts to fashion itself as an ‘edge city'; to a general interest in suburban settlement patterns and identities. His talk at UHPH - Centering the Periphery: The Real and Imagined Centres of Casey, Victoria – centred (pun intended) on Casey, a suburban local government area in the south east of Melbourne. Casey is a geographically huge area (which Nick compares in scale to Metro Miami), and Nick and co-authors (including erstwhile TMBTP host David Nichols) were interested in Casey's efforts at fashioning ‘centres' in the context of incremental largely residential growth. Part of the presentation included revisiting Casey's earlier history as the City of Berwick, which in the 1970s pursued what we would now consider ‘futuristic' (as in, an imagined future we now scoff at) plans for a ‘metro city' of 100,000 people with its own green belt and (as was the style of the time) monorail. That city-shaping plan was shelved, although similarly huge scales of growth have since nonetheless occurred. Incidentally, some parts of Casey apparently still have a reservation for a monorail. As in Hugh Stretton's Ideas for Australian Cities, we discuss the idea there are two broad aspects to people's lives, with one secluded and quiet (the traditional function of a residential suburb – at least for certain people/men), and the other the outward facing connected ‘buzz' generally the function of a city centre. Nick considers whether and how suburban areas like Casey create the second kind of place. The discussion compares places like Casey to those of British New Towns under Development Corporations. For example Milton-Keynes, designated in the 1960s while passing through phases of mockery, is now the fastest growing city in the UK and an attractor both of new residents and new industries. We also discuss the prevalence of projects like monorails in edge city plans around the world in the 1970s – Nick suggests the ways we now scoff at such plans reflects a larger shift in planning, away from a belief in “thinking about the future in quite grand terms”. Part of the ensuing reticence is an aversion to some of new town planning's architectural dagginess, implausibility and paternalism. But there are trade-offs: planners have also tended to lose the capacity to have positive, large scale-discussions about the future, as well as some practical mechanisms for timing and delivery of new settlements. These include the use of land values toward supporting some notion of a shared public good, like providing facilities or shaping centres longer term. The episode also ranges from land acquisition and developer contributions, to national settlement patterns, local governments, 1970s economics, TV, Albury-Wodonga, green belts and how to pronounce names like “Launceston”, “Traralgon”, “Leicester” and “Gloucester”.

Join us for live discussion in upcoming episodes for $16.91 you can be part of the conversation     Haunted Hills is a podcast obsessed with small towns. Tegan Dawson, the host, grew up in a small town, or two - the house she lived in was from Yallourn - a town that did not exist anymore and caught her young imagination. Each place is explored through the people, history, crime, paranormal and legends. What does that say about the vibe of the town?     Haunted Hills has caught the bug, as long as Tegan has been researching the local area, she has not really understood people's fascination with Yallourn. Well, she does now. And for the next lot of bonus episodes, they will be working to creating an audiobook about Yallourn. A lot has been said, but it hasn't been viewed with impacts of the people. That's the Haunted Hills difference. You can sign up on Patreon.com/hauntedhills the more support there the faster episodes will come out even the free episodes. We really are obsessed with small towns.   What's with the name? The Haunted Hills is a place where the hills rumble and cows won't stay - it inspires us.  The show is named after these hills as well as the first podcast. Then there are more stories of other small towns starting in Gippsland Victoria Australia. Featuring their history, crime and Paranormal. With the magic of technology, we can cover nearly any small town anywhere. All we need is an internet connection and the astral plane.   In 2015, I started telling the first lot of these stories as location-based tours. In Yallourn North,  Rosedale and Traralgon. Anyone can download a podcast where ever they are, or if they have the nerve to listen on location.   Leave us a voicemail: https://www.speakpipe.com/HauntedHills   Our website - Haunted Hills   Support Haunted Hills   WANT MORE HAUNTED HILLS? Welcome to Secrets of Organ Playing Podcast #128! Today's special guest is John Higgins, who is the organist at St Andrew's Presbyterian church in Morwell, Victoria, Australia. John has been a guest a while ago on our podcast. We talked when he was living in another state of Southern Australia, in a small town called Whyalla. He has a tradition of playing Christmas concerts for his former congregation at Victor Harbor. John has been our loyal subscriber since the very beginning of this blog in the early 2012 and has since resurrected his passion for music and specifically for organ. He's an engineer by profession but through these years of organ practice, he's grown so much that now he has the skill to play for liturgy as well as recitals. Currently John is living in Traralgon, Victoria where he has moved with his family and I'm very excited to be able to talk to him about his recent Christmas concert that he played at Victor Harbor. Make sure you listen to the very end because you will get a lot of inspiration from John for the New Year. By the way, John will be coming to Lithuania! Yes, it's NOT a typo. He's scheduled to play a recital at Vilnius University St John's church this April. Ausra and I are very excited about being able to welcome him in Vilnius. Listen to the conversation And don't forget to help spread the word about the SOP Podcast by sharing it with your organist friends.
