Her latest titled Love & Other Monsters is about a time in history that most English majors look on with awe and wonder. Her novel is about the summer of 1816 when Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, Lord Byron and John Polidori traveled to Switzerland and, as the legend goes, told scary stories to each other, which ended up leading to the first vampire story and the book we now know as Frankenstein. But Franklin's novel focuses on a member of the party who doesn't get any acknowledgement—Mary's step-sister Claire Clairemont. The springboard for my interests as they are today came in the form of one Dr. George Knight, professor of New Testament at Hardin-Simmons University, and an accomplished field archaeologist. It just so happened that his brother-in-law, Reverend Wayne Keller, was the pastor at my church. Our congregation had the great fortune of Dr. Knight's leadership in a number of seasonal bible studies throughout the year. To my great delight, he always added tales of his work on archaeological sites in the Near East. That's really all it took for me, because I drank it all in, and it became part of me. I have ever since been an explorer: a direct result of the marriage of faith in Jesus Christ and academic enthusiasm.I have a BA in History from Hardin-Simmons University. I also have an MA in anthropology from Texas Tech University. This year I completed my PhD in history at Texas Tech University, focusing my studies on Early Christianity and Greco-Roman religions. I also study topics such as the survival of mythology, sacred geography, folk religion, and contemporary alternative religious movements.I grew up in a small town called Merkel, Texas. I went to school there, learned from such wonderful teachers as Chuck Roach, Lisa Amerine, Alvin O'Dell, and Lisa Walker. The springboard for my interests as they are today came in the form of one Dr. George Knight, professor of New Testament at Hardin-Simmons University, and an accomplished field archaeologist. It just so happened that his brother-in-law, Reverend Wayne Keller, was the pastor at my church. Our congregation had the great fortune of Dr. Knight's leadership in a number of seasonal bible studies throughout the year. To my great delight, he always added tales of his work on archaeological sites in the Near East. That's really all it took for me, because I drank it all in, and it became part of me. I have ever since been an explorer: a direct result of the marriage of faith in Jesus Christ and academic enthusiasm. I have a BA in History from Hardin-Simmons University. I also have an MA in anthropology from Texas Tech University. This year I completed my PhD in history at Texas Tech University, focusing my studies on Early Christianity and Greco-Roman religions. I also study topics such as the survival of mythology, sacred geography, folk religion, and contemporary alternative religious movements. I grew up in a small town called Merkel, Texas. I went to school there, learned from such wonderful teachers as Chuck Roach, Lisa Amerine, Alvin O'Dell, and Lisa Walker. Merkel also afforded me the opportunity to learn how to play the guitar, and yes, be in a rock band, Black Pearl. The little hamlet of Merkel was a wonderful place to grow up. A few years back, novels classed as “romantasy”—a portmanteau of “romance” and “fantasy”—might have seemed destined to attract only niche appeal. But since the pandemic, the genre has proved nothing short of a phenomenon. Sarah J. Maas's “A Court of Thorns and Roses” series has repeatedly topped best-seller lists, and Rebecca Yarros's 2025 title “Onyx Storm” became the fastest-selling adult novel in decades. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz are joined by their fellow New Yorker staff writer Katy Waldman as they delve into the realm of romantasy themselves. Together, they consider some of the most popular entries in the genre, and discuss how monitoring readers' reactions on BookTok, a literary corner of TikTok, allows writers to tailor their work to fans' hyperspecific preferences. The Night Stalker (1972), Dracula (1973), and Trilogy of Terror (1975) Horror fans from the 1970s may not have known the name Dan Curtis, but they certainly knew his work. From his early gothic soap opera Dark Shadows, where one of the main characters just happened to be a vampire, to the countless adaptations of classic novels, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, and Jekyll and Hyde, to even more throughout the '70s. Curtis continued to give TV viewing audiences plenty of nightmares during that time, blending classic monsters with new and unique ones and delivering all of them to the small screen in ways that really resonated with audiences at the time. Ghostface is back. Sidney Prescott is back. Kevin Williamson — the writer who started it all in 1996 — is back, this time in the director's chair. And The Film Board is here to pick through the wreckage.Pete Wright convenes the panel — Tommy Metz III, Steve Sarmento, and Mandy Kaplan — for a full-spoiler autopsy of Scream 7, the franchise's seventh installment and its most complicated origin story yet. The film arrives trailing the collapse of a whole other movie: Melissa Barrera's firing, Jenna Ortega's departure, two directors exiting before a frame was shot, and Neve Campbell finally getting what she was owed to come back. What ended up on screen bears those scars — and the panel doesn't look away from them.There's plenty to argue about. Tommy arrives as the franchise's longest-tenured Film Board voice and delivers his most critical take yet — the kills are flat, the villain reveal is the weakest in franchise history, and the AI deepfake conceit is nostalgia for nostalgia's sake. Steve, against form, finds himself in the film's corner: the Sidney-Tatum mother-daughter dynamic gives him something real to hold onto, and he'll take that over clever-but-hollow any day. Mandy had a genuinely good time, found Anna Camp's casting as transparent as a freshly-cleaned window, and would very much like Tatum's next chapter to be a musical. Pete sits somewhere in the middle — glad to have Kevin Williamson back, troubled by what he had to work with, and still thinking about the better movie that never got made.They get into the production chaos, the Barrera-shaped hole in the script, the question of whether the AI angle says anything worth saying, the correct use of a panic room, the mystery of a certain line reading, and whether Scream 7 has dethroned Scream 3 at the bottom of the franchise pile.

She reveals herself as the first human-werewolf hybrid on national television in an effort to reclaim her life after being kidnapped and involuntarily outed as hybrid. Unfortunately, it puts a target on her back as someone on the council of Vampyres has placed a bounty on her head. With Vampyres coming from all directions to collect, Serena is relocated to the one place where she can truly be kept safe: her mate Koen's house. While Serena is perfect for Koen in every way, he tells her from the start that he's not interesting in pursuing her. The more time she spends in his house, the harder it is for them to stay apart though. There are larger factors at work keeping them apart, besides Koen's stubbornness, and things get even more complicated when ghosts from Serena's childhood return unexpectedly.

This week we're joined by Mark Anastasio, program director for the Coolidge Corner Cinema in Boston to cash checks and bite necks with a look at Werner Herzog's ambitious remake of the FW Murnau's 1922 not-Dracula adaptation, Nosferatu. Mark has first-hand experience with Herzog, having hosted him at the theater numerous times and regales us with stories that we've never heard about the man before. He also does a pretty good Werner Herzog impression.In this movie, Herzog is joined by his creative arch-frenemy Klaus Kinski in a unique existential twist on one of the genres most unimpeachable classics. Here, Count Dracula is bunched, broken old monster with no desire to live but no path toward death. He brings pestilence and horror from the old world to then-modern day Germany and meets his match with the one woman in the city with the knowledge and determination to destroy the beast.
