https://notesonfilm1.com/2024/11/17/the-gus-van-sant-podcast-no-6-michael-j-glass-on-good-will-hunting-1997/ Michael J. Glass joins me for a discussion of Gus Van Sant's GOOD WILL HUNTING (1997), a blockbuster success in its day; a film that won Robin Williams an Oscar, made stars of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and left a big cultural imprint. It's since been much parodied (in COMMUNITY, THE SIMPSONS, all over youtube) and a dominant critical perspective is slightly sniffy on the film: filmmaking by numbers and committees on a ‘we need a job' script. We found it an extremely easy watch that holds up and is even more interesting on second viewing. GOOD WILL HUNTING is an effective piece that is surprising in all kinds of ways and still works. We discuss its critique of the US, its focus on class, on abuse, on the fragility of young men. Its rare to see a film that dramatizes how American foreign policy is one of extraction and exploitation and how social mobility in the US is available only to geniuses with sponsorship. We also discuss whether how Van Sant film and what he focusses on might be connected to sexual identity.
https://notesonfilm1.com/2024/10/28/the-gus-van-sant-podcast-no-4-lisa-purse-on-even-cowgirls-get-the-blues-1993/ Lisa Purse on EVEN COWGIRLS GET THE BLUES (Gus Van Sant, 1993) I was truly delighted when Lisa Purse agreed to talk to me about EVEN COWGIRLS GET THE BLUES. Lisa is a Professor of Film Studies at Reading University, one of the most brilliant scholars on action movies, and a nuanced thinker on questions of mediations, conflicts, identities. I wanted to have her on the podcast because I thought she might expand my thinking on EVEN COWGIRLS GET THE BLUES, and she did. In the podcast we discuss seeing the film when it was first released, seeing it now, and explore the hows and whys of changing responses. We note the context of ‘New Queer Cinema' and the different kinds of experiments that were then taking place. EVEN COWGIRLS GET THE BLUES is a film that refuses seriousness and we speculate that maybe neither of us was then in a place where we could recognise the value of that. We discuss how the film continues Van Sant's interest in ‘The Road', and discuss movement and flow, as rhythm, narrative device, formal strategy, and condensed ideation. Is it a film that's trying to do much? B. Ruby Rich wrote on how the film contains references to forms of collective action. Is it more of its time than we first realised? We discuss the film as a form of active allyship that is not to be sneezed at, and note the hostility of its initial reception, refencing B. Ruby Rich's contention that with this film Van Sant fell into the category of a female director (at least for some) and therefore got treated as one.
https://notesonfilm1.com/2024/10/13/the-gus-van-sant-podcast-5a-to-die-for-1995/ The first of two podcasts on Gus Van Sant's TO DIE FOR (1995), this one with Matt Hays, journalist, co-editor with Tom Waugh of McGill-Queen's Press' QUEER FILM CLASSICS series, and a professor of film at Concordia University and Marianopolis College. Matt's reviewed Criterion's recent edition of the film for the current CINEASTE and I wanted to pick up on some of the excellent points he raises there: how is the film a turning point in Van Sant's career? What is this shifting of gears between Van Sant's more commercial and more esoteric works? Is the film prescient? What does it tell us about celebrity culture, the media and politics? What is the film's view of heterosexual relations? What does it tell us about race in America? What are the formal tensions running through the film? It's structure has been compared to that of CITIZEN KANE and RASHOMON. How so? We agree that Kidman gives one of her greatest performances but have Matt Dillon and Joaquin Phoenix been overlooked? All this and much more can be heard here:
https://notesonfilm1.com/2024/09/26/the-gus-van-sant-podcast-no-2-drugstore-cowboy-1989/ We found DRUGSTORE COWBOY, Gus Van Sant's second feature, beautiful, imaginative and moving; a film that gets better with each viewing. We discuss Matt Dillon, so extraordinarily good looking and yet also so very believable as a ‘regular guy'; Tom Waits was the original casting and we talk about what Dillon brings to the role, his choices, and another possible connection to Van Sant, how he is also drawn to the marginal, the outsider; we talk about the experimental montages, clearly influenced by Anthony Balch's Fires Open Fire (1963) which evoke a subjective state of mind, usually drug fuelled, but which also act as a structuring device and help make the film aesthetically cohesive. We discuss continuities: time-lapse photography, Super8 filming, the Pacific Northwest, subject matter of marginals, outsiders, small time crims, junkies. We both agree that we don't like William Burroughs in the film, even though he was much praised upon its release. We discuss how Van Sant's second feature is an announcement of a major American director with a distinctive voice, a very particular style, a visual vernacular, a contiguous world from film to film, peopled by recurring figures, a darkly comic tone
https://notesonfilm1.com/2024/09/22/the-gus-van-sant-podcast-1-mala-noche-1985/ A new podcast to accompany a new mini-research project. Richard's kindly humoured me and consented to help kickstart this project, but he'll only co-host with me for the first three films so I shall be reaching out to some of you to talk to me about the rest – and certainly if you have a particular interest in any of Van Sant's films and would like to podcast on them with me, do please get in touch. I'm hoping to build a resource here, not only with the podcasts but eventually with clips, images, a bibliography and more. It will be a process. In this inaugural podcast we talk about Van Sant's first feature, based on Walt Streeter's autobiographical novel, self-financed for $20,000 and filmed on 16mm. We discuss what made us uncomfortable on first viewing, in my case when the film first came out: the power differentials between the characters; the racialised dimension to the casting; but we also discuss why it arguably remains a great film – and the troublesome aspects are part of its greatness. We discuss how the film is an announcement of a new voice in American cinema, with roots in a history of queer culture (John Rechy, Genet, Warhol, The Beats). We speculate on the film's romanticism within a quite fluid representation of sexuality that distinguishes between acts, desire, feelings and identities; queer avant-la-lèttre. We talk about the film's look, one partly dictated by the film's budget, few lights available thus the choice of hard one-directional lighting; making for a noir look but with a beat, bohemian sensibility. MALA NOCHE arrives in the context of new forms of finance, distribution and exhibition permitted by the developing video rental market. One could now produce low-budget films which heretofore challenging subect matterand/or challenging forms and make money from niche markets. Van Sant appears alongside Jarmusch, Spike Lee and other indie filmmakers in the mid 80s. MALA NOCHE can be thought of as a the first of what may be considered a trilogy (alongside DRUGSTORE COWBOY and MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO), at least thematically: it's North West setting, the marginal cultures, the bohemian romance of outsiderness, it's avant-garde components, its daring. An exciting film to re-watch and talk about.

Drugstore Cowboy is a 1989 American crime drama film directed by the American filmmaker Gus Van Sant. Written by Van Sant and Daniel Yost and based on an autobiographical novel by James Fogle, the film stars Matt Dillon, Kelly Lynch, Heather Graham and William S. Burroughs.
Episode 383: The Crew's wondering how beautiful they'd be if they were drug addicts while watching Gus Van Sant's Drugstore Cowboy. Season 3 is here and we're kicking off with a much requested and somewhat controversial remake. Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 horror-thriller Psycho changed the game. An iconic score, moody black and white photography, some of the most parodied sequences and dialogue in cinema history and the first ever appearance of a flushing toilet. So, naturally, Gus Van Sant followed up his biggest hit with a colour, shot-for-shot remake, taken from the exact same script. Have we got another Point Break on our hands, or did Van Sant pull it off? Vince Vaughn certainly did... Today's interview on The Stories Collective will show just how willing our God is to show up for His people. It was a blessing to talk with Heather Van Sant and we're excited to share this conversation with you.⚠️ Before you listen, we do want to give you a trigger warning for this episode. Intense medical issues, procedures and struggles, some involving pregnancy, are discussed throughout this conversation. ⚠️Heather grew up as a pastor's kid living in Arizona. An interest in working in the medical field led her to attend Northern Arizona University as a young adult. It was there that Heather first began to experience some intense medical issues, including a cancer scare at 19 years old. Heather and Mark married in 1998 and you can learn more about their early married years in Mark's interview on The Stories Collective. Heather's first pregnancy with their son Josiah was what most would consider normal but the birth itself was incredibly traumatic. It came to a point where Heather had to fully commit her precious son to the Lord. By the grace of God Josiah is living today and the Lord blessed Heather and Mark with 3 other children, Eli, Hannah and Bekah. Heather talks us through each pregnancy, detailing the struggles but ultimately communicates how faithful God was to see her through and gift their family with healthy children. Unfortunately, after the pregnancies Heather was still experiencing some intense and somewhat unexplainable health issues. You'll hear the emotion in her voice as she talks through the extreme lows she experienced trying to parent her young children and feeling isolated from community. It is hard to encapsulate all that Heather has been through medically but all in all you see God's hand over her life in very specific and tangible ways. There is a joy that is contagious throughout the conversation. You'll appreciate Heather's heart and perspective as she shares. Heather's life is truly a miracle and we're so thankful to have her as a part of our church!Mark Van Sant's episode: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6NBPKEC89pjJZfFRvIUNtj?si=2fb14514dd2740b0Wednesday Night Women's Bible Study (led by Heather): https://dscchurch.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/1882561Would you please subscribe and leave us a review? On this episode of the NHRA Insider Podcast host Brian Lohnes is joined by Jon Oberhofer and Todd Smith, the winning funny car crew chiefs from the Denso Sonoma Nationals as well as rookie Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Chase Van Sant. In the case of Oberhofer and Smith, the conversation centers around the long and systematic rebuilding process of their tune-up and race car after the disaster weekend they had in Pomona with a crash followed by a horrible explosion. It is a fascinating thing to hear about their approach, the arduous work, and ultimately when the results began to come to them. On top of that, the pair talk about the workings of their team, personnel, their approach on race days, and the challenges of Sonoma 2023 with odd weather, a massive oil down, a right lane no one wanted, and what it was like to deliver Kalitta Motorsports a win, their first in a long while. Chase Van Sant is one of the young riders in Pro Stock Motorcycle forging his name into the ranks of many established players. Van Sant has not ridden like a rookie as he leads the class in average reaction time, has qualified close to the front of the field, and goes rounds more often than he doesn't. In this fun conversation, Lohnes and Van Sant cover a lot of ground from he mental mechanics of being a rider to the pressures, adjustments, and learning curve of being a rookie. Lots of fun here! Different classes, different lives, the same drive to win. A truly fun show.

Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week's Unwatchables features Matt Singer, film critic, author, and editor of ScreenCrush.com, to help continue our month of high-profile misfires (or are they?). His pick is one of the most foolhardy cinematic experiments ever released by a major studio: Gus Van Sant's 1998 remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. It's not a reimagining, a reboot, or even a legacy-quel— to use a phrase that our guest coined— but a nearly shot-for-shot recreation of one of the most iconic classics in the canon. We discuss what exactly Van Sant meant to accomplish, whether any part of it “works,” and what distinguishes Psycho '98 from today's soulless retreads. Unwatchables is hosted by Marc Dottavio and Seth Troyer, produced by Tony Scarpitti, featuring artwork by Micah Kraus. Was war damals so bahnbrechend?
Cue the strings! Cole's back from vacation, and together he and Zach cover several summer new releases - Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, Beast, Inu-Oh and Prey - before Cole launches into an impassioned defense of one of the most reviled films of the 1990s, Gus Van Sant's remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, starring the late Anne Heche and Vince Vaughn.
Today is Wednesday which means it is time for another episode of The Stories Collective! Back in the late spring our host Sarah Schalow had the opportunity to sit down with Mark Van Sant. Mark serves as an elder here at Desert Springs and it was so cool to hear him share his heart and story with us. A major theme throughout Mark's story is the incredible and miraculous provision of God. You can hear the tenderness in his heart when he shares about the care God has provided for him and his family throughout the years. You'll get to hear many stories of when he didn't know what to do and God came through; there was never a moment that God wasn't there. If anything, this story will fill you with hope and bring a positive outlook to the difficult times in life. You too will be thankful for God's provision. We're excited for you to listen!Would you please subscribe and leave us a review? This will help our podcast reach more people! We'd love it if you'd share this podcast with your friends on social media and beyond. Join us next Wednesday to hear another story of God's faithfulness!
This week in the studio, a man with 20 years of service in the US Army. He served in such units as the 75th Ranger regiment, the 3rd Infantry Division, the 82nd Airborne, and the famed 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (Delta Force). He has undergone 11 combat deployments in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Horn of Africa. He has hunted the likes of Hussein, Zarkawi, and other notable deck of cards players. This has not been an easy life as most would understand, but in this one we have to go deeper to the root causes of the problems suffered by far to many veterans. Numerous concussions, blasts, breaches, TBI, and don't forget a generous dose of PTS. My guest has overcome those demons of his past and is now a shining example to other veterans, he teaches that at any point you can reinvent yourself to be anything that you need or want to be, and that there are brighter days ahead when you look in the right places. He now enjoys the outdoors, volunteer work, and making sure that those that surround him live their absolute best life. He's a board member of the All Secure Foundation and the President of VanSant Consulting. He's here in the studio to talk about the highs and lows, chasing the unicorn of adrenaline, and ultimately how to be happy in your life. It is my honor to introduce you to Chris VanSant.
Hello! I'm Michael Gaskill, your new host for Coast Range Radio. I'm hard at work putting together brand new episodes for the show, and we have some great guests lined up. I'm also always looking for feedback, show ideas, and guest suggestions! Email me at michael@coastrange.org.In the meantime, I wanted to replay on of my favorite epsiodes from the past couple years of the show. This is actually part one of a great two-part conversation between Andrew and Levi Van Sant (@LeviVanSant), an Assistant Professor at George Mason University in Fairfax County Virginia whose work focuses on environmental (in)justice, particularly issues surrounding food, agriculture, and land use. I highly recommend checking out part two of their conversation as well.Levi wrote a formative piece in Dissent on Land Reform and the Green New Deal that influenced the Coast Range Association's recent Climate & Oregon's Industrial Forests: A Green New Proposal. Andrew and Levi discuss agricultural land transitions, the history of the First National Conference for Land Reform and the unifying opportunities that could come from including rural justice and land ownership solutions in the just transition mandate of the Green New Deal.Resource Links:https://www.dissentmagazine.org/article/land-reform-and-the-green-new-dealhttps://agriculture.auburn.edu/research/aers/alabama-timberland/https://coastrange.org/challenging-wall-street-forestry/ownership/Support the showSupport the show
The one that made movie stars out of Damon & Affleck has been discussed by nearly everybody for the past 25 years, but we managed to find several new wrinkles in this well-written dramedy about friendship, love, grief and advanced math. Matt & Ben won Oscars for their quotable script and so did Robin Williams for his heartfelt performance as Damon's therapist. Williams is at his best in Good Will Hunting and now we can see how his character has even more depth than we thought at the time. Gus Van Sant got marvelous work out of those 3 stars, not to mention Stellan Skarsgard and Minnie Driver. It's an atypical film for an arthouse director like Van Sant, but he wrings all the emotion and comedy out of apples, caramels and Bah-ston coffee. So let the quirky, cool and sexy lady win you over with a kiss as the 445th Ellises' Analysis psychoanalyzes Good Will Hunting. But, hey, don't sit around eating caramels when you can get a 20% discount off Sparkplug Coffee. March of the Governors, Podcast #16 Samuel Van Sant Samuel Van Sant was Minnesota's fifteenth governor—the first to serve in the twentieth century and the first to occupy the current capitol. After three years of combat duty in the Union cavalry (1861-1864), Van Sant joined the family steamboat business in LeClaire, Iowa. In 1883, he moved to Winona and soon went into politics. A Republican, he was elected to the legislature in 1892 and rose to speaker of the house just two years later. A gifted public speaker, he was elected governor in 1900 and reelected in 1902. In keeping with the spirit of the age, he championed such progressive measures as reform of the state's tax system, advocating for wilderness protection, and extending the use of the primaries to nominate candidates. In the decades following his retirement from political office, Van Sant became a national leader in Civil War veterans' affairs and was a popular speaker at Republican gatherings throughout Minnesota. He died in 1936 at the age of ninety-two.

She shares how her journey as a young apprentice and then assistant editor led her to working out of Gus Van Sant's house during production of the now-iconic My Own Private Idaho, her collaboration with Van Sant on projects including a shot-for-shot remake of Psycho, her work with filmmaker Lisa Cholodenko on films including the groundbreaking High Art, and her recent work in television shaping prestige series such as Mare of Easttown.Amy and Lisa also cover:What it's like to work on a project, like My Own Private Idaho, that becomes culturally iconic: “Most of the time when you're working on something, you just hope people see it”How allowing time for ideas and approaches to percolate is essential in film and TV editing—rushing is the enemy of artThat the process of editing great actors—including Frances McDormand, Kate Winslet, and Patricia Clarkson—is challenging to describe: “You're just trying to follow the rhythms”How Amy turned down an offer to work on Good Will Hunting to edit her friend Lisa Cholodenko's first film, High Art, which became a Sundance sensationHow High Art as an artifact of New Queer Cinema reflected cultural growth, as it's “not a shiny coming-out story,” and how art is essential for “creating space” for new stories and narratives around underrepresented groupsWhat it was like to experience Mare of Easttown's popularity: “The outpouring of love for the show was mind-blowing”Amy is on Twitter as @phantomframe.

This week, since James showed Brian one of his favorite films, we've switched roles and now Brian introduces James to Gus Van Sant's To Die For. The 1995 film stars Nicole Kidman as a ruthless woman looking for fame and fortune at any cost - even murder. We take a look at how the film holds up, discuss Van Sant's queer gaze and lament the lack of roles for the actress Illeana Douglas!

Even though your creative fiction professor fawns over Joyce, you don't understand the copy of ULYSSES you checked out from the library, so you hide behind it while you stare at your classmate whose skin flickers. His blue and green skin is speckled in spirals of twinkling lights. When you stare long enough, you realize the spirals spin like galaxies. Part of your brain should tell you he is abnormal, but it does not. He stands up and reads his assignment. He reads poetry. This is not a poetry class. | Copyright 2018 by Cameron Van Sant.
