What can the high-stakes world of professional sports teach us about leadership in the corporate world? In this episode, we are joined by Michael Andrei, former German National Volleyball Player and Team Captain of the SWD Powervolleys Düren. Michael now serves as the team's Athletic Coach and works with individuals and organizations as a Personal Trainer and Motivational Coach.Together, we explore the striking parallels between leading on the court and leading in the boardroom. Drawing from his career in top-tier volleyball—including competing in front of 13,000 fans at the European Championships—Michael shares practical insights on pressure, presence, and performance.Key themes in this conversation include:Leading under pressure: What corporate leaders can learn from staying focused in high-stress, high-visibility environments. The importance of body language and emotional control—and how captains and executives alike set the emotional tone for their teams. Why "not taking yourself too seriously" can actually be a sign of strength.Building high-performance cultures: lessons from recruiting and retaining the right team players. How feedback, even when direct and uncomfortable, builds trust and improves performance—if delivered in the right way.Mistake management: distinguishing between "acceptable" and "unacceptable”"errors to enable smart risk-taking.Rethinking success: Why winning isn't everything, and how true leadership shows up not just in victory—but in how we respond to setbacks.Michael also shares strategies and tools from professional sports that are relevant in the corporate context: managing your energy, maintaining emotional composure, and developing resilience through rituals like breathing techniques and staying focused on what truly matters.Whether you're a CEO, senior leader, or team manager, this conversation offers both inspiration and practical strategies for leading with clarity, composure, and heart.Reflection Questions for Leaders:What does "winning" mean to you?Are you projecting the energy you want others to experience? And are there moments where you could take yourself just a little less seriously? To find out more about Michael Andrei and to connect with him, go to his LinkedIn-Profile.About Second CrackMore information about us and our work is available on our website: secondcrackleadership.com. From mouses used as medicine to farts in a jar, nothing is too strange for this crew! But the challenge doesn't end there. The contestants move on to a mind-bending connections round, with answers cleverly tied together by sports themes, before finally facing off in a high-stakes, clue-driven finale where every buzzer and guess can make or break the game.Stay tuned as Jeff keeps everyone on their toes with creative questions, and meet our charismatic guests—each professionals in the world of intuitive and energy healing—who share not just their trivia chops but a quick peek into their unique backgrounds. They simply guess if it's true or false. Think “mouse paste” for toothaches and “farts in a jar” to ward off the plague!Highlights:Rachel correctly guessed that mashed mouse was really used in Egypt for toothaches (ew!).Terrie was surprised to learn that sliced mouse for warts was actually a true remedy in England.Sam nailed “mouse mustaches” for cleft lips as FALSE (thank goodness).Bizarre facts included stuttering "cures" (cutting tongues!), healing tonics with coca leaves, and a “farts in a jar” defense against the Black Death.Rachel and Sam came out with a slight lead into the next round.Round 2: ConnectionsRules:Each player goes solo in the “hot seat.” Jeff asks four questions where the answers all tie together into one sports-related theme. If the player gets the connection right, they score a bonus point. Each “hot seat” ends with a rapid-fire “Name Five” challenge for an extra five points.Rachel:Her clues (block, dig, spike, serve) led her to the answer “volleyball.” She also aced the Name Five: Summer Olympic sports not played in winter.Terrie:Her answers (giant, cowboy, brown, bronco) led to “football,” and she had to name five cookies you wouldn't want on pizza.Sam:Her clues (360, flip, grind, ollie) pointed toward “board sports/skateboarding,” and her Name Five: People names that are also dog names.Scoreboard Update:Rachel: 10Terrie & Sam: 9Round 3: Who/What/Where Am I? (Buzz-In Challenge)Rules:Jeff gives progressively specific clues to a person, place, thing, or event. Contestants “buzz in” with their personalized sounds. Buzz in early and get it right—score up to 3 points. Buzz early and miss—lose those points!Memorable Moments:Terrie scored for “whiskey” (bourbon) using clues like “51% corn.”Willie Nelson and Texas Roadhouse made for a country music question.Fastest finger Sam scored 3 points for “stingray” (Chevy Corvette inspiration).Historical disasters, unicorn mammals (narwhal!), and Wikipedia stumped the crew and led to plenty of buzzer drama. The final question left Rachel narrowly in the lead!Final Scores:Rachel: 12 (Winner!)Terrie & Sam: Close behindThanks for listening – Don't forget to follow, leave a review, and check out our amazing guests in the show notes! “  Surgeries one through three, there is still this fear around weight gain and therefore restriction. And I think part of me wants to know, is that a major factor in why I didn't heal well? I'm not going to dwell on that or guilt-trip myself over it; it's in the past. But it was also an opportunity for surgeries four and onward, to say: ‘Let's take a different approach. Let's nourish to heal. Let's not feed to skate by.'”   Tatum Vedder was heading into her last year of collegiate volleyball, playing in a co-ed tournament, when she took a rough landing and had to be carried off the court. What she thought might be a couple of seasons away turned into six surgeries and what she eventually came to see would be a lifelong change.   Tatum had already been studying nutrition, but it wasn't until she began this ordeal that she had an aha moment about the impact of fueling on injury recovery. She learned to shift from a place of fear and restriction to one of compassion and nourishment. Not only did that improve her healing process, it shaped her career—now, she's a registered dietitian who specializes in helping other injured athletes nourish their comebacks, too. Her story touches on identity shifts, asking for help, managing shifting timelines, and ultimately finding equilibrium through life's ups and downs. The top story: Kevin Young's contract extension, locking in BYU's head coach “for the foreseeable future,” following his Sweet 16 debut season. The Phoenix Suns were reportedly interested in bringing him back to the NBA, but BYU acted swiftly. On the personal side, the Youngs are also expecting their fourth child this fall—a baby girl. The show also reacts to the House v. NCAA settlement, which paves the way for direct school payments to athletes starting this summer.Dave checks in live from the Deseret News High School Sports Awards, where he's emceeing and Travis Hansen is the keynote speaker. Meanwhile, BYU Football summer workouts are underway, and the crew highlights ESPN's Football Power Index projections: 8 wins expected, 29th national ranking, and a 12.6% chance to reach the College Football Playoff. They also preview key games this fall and break down the upcoming bowl season schedule—including a potential Big 12 appearance in the Alamo or Citrus Bowl.Special guest Andrew Gentry, a 6'7", 327-pound transfer from Michigan, joins the show to talk about his road to Provo. Gentry reflects on his time under Jim Harbaugh, why he ultimately chose BYU, and what it was like getting recruited while serving a mission in Argentina. From blocking in the national championship win over Washington to preparing for the BYU–Utah showdown on October 18, Gentry brings a championship pedigree to the Cougars' O-line.The show wraps with basketball updates, including BYU vs. Clemson at Madison Square Garden in the Jimmy V Classic and a rematch with Wisconsin in Salt Lake. Dick Vitale ranks BYU No. 7, and Egor Demin remains a possible NBA first-round pick. There's also news from Track & Field, Women's Volleyball, Soccer, and a spotlight on Jane Hedengren, who just broke a national mile record.
