Twain's condemnation of the celebration and glorification of war and his revealing of the true consequences of praying for victory in war.

Twain's biting satire exposes the temptation to think God is on “our side” of a war. Sadly, Mark Twain himself was not a believer, but his insight into Christian hypocrisy and the perversions that come with tying religion to nationalist or imperial causes is well worth listening to. Let's follow the Lord of peace and flee all attempts to enlist God in human war-mongering. The War Prayer is in the public domain and the text can be found online. https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_War_Prayer This is the 177th episode of Anabaptist Perspectives, a podcast, blog, and YouTube channel that examines various aspects of conservative Anabaptist life and thought. In Episode 74, Christopher and Riley revisit a topic they've previously spoken about on the podcast, but from a different perspective. Episode 5: On Peace deals with inner peace, while this one deals with interpersonal, relational, and world peace. They explore the LDS doctrinal case for renouncing war in Sec. 98 as a springboard to a larger discussion about practical application of peace, as exemplified by Jesus, the anti-nephi-lehis, St. Maximilian and others. They make a case for a non-violent reading of scripture, particularly the Book of Mormon and challenge the listener to take small proactive steps, in concert with others, forming a grassroots movement towards a peaceful world. For additional notes and resources check out Douglas' website."You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Matthew 5:48).On the previous topic, "Enemies:"Jesus, Paul, and the early church spoke clearly and definitively about the need to love our enemies—never to assault them (verbally or physically), never to kill them, always love them. This understanding was lost when the church made its alliance with the state in the 4th century. From that time, and up to our day, nearly all churches are worldly and disobedient to Jesus' command to love our enemies.Making a change in this area would really make the Christian community “pop”—stand out!Further: Listen to Mark Twain's War Prayer.Be perfect? At first, it sounds as though Jesus is saying that we have to be sinless or faultless. As a young Christian I believed this was indeed exactly what he was commanding. Perfect—no compromise—no margin of error! This misunderstanding affected how I related to others. It affected me as a leader. It affected my family. However, there are two problems with such an interpretation. The Greek word (teleios) means perfected in the sense of completion or maturity—the end of a process—perfected. It must be understood in the context of loving enemies—and the rest of the lifestyle teaching in Matt 5. It's not a call to be perfect students or workers, or to be 100% fault-free.We are to be like our Father—in how he treats us. God gives grace (sunshine, rain, and much more) to all (the righteous and the wicked). It has been suggested that perfection here means holiness. We are to be holy, for he is holy (Lev 11:44).So, are we behaving like adult children of the Father?Imagine what the church would be like if we dealt with anger, dealt with lust, truly honored marriage, were totally reliable—men and women of integrity—and never retaliated, verbally or otherwise, sincerely loving and serving our enemies!Of course this is difficult. It's much easier to fake it—which Jesus will next address, as we move into chapter 6.Next: Show-off!

For additional notes and resources check out Douglas’ website.Salient points:Note on v.1: the compilation of sayings in Hezekiah's day (c.700 BC) was made many generations after the time of Solomon (who died about 970 BC). The book of Proverbs took centuries to reach its final (present) form.Research (v.2) is glorious. The disciple should rejoice in new discoveries, exploration, and science. Yet research is qualified (v.27)."If your enemy is hungry..." (v.21) is taken up in the N.T. in Romans 12. Such love appears here and there in the O.T., though it is the rule in the N.T. (e.g. Jesus' words in Matt 5). To take this advice literally would be to have nothing to do with war. For further thought, listen to the War Prayer.Lack of personal discipline renders us vulnerable -- without any protection against chaos, temptation, unwise companions, poor judgment, etc. (v.28). We need to guard our thoughts and actions.Self-awareness and empathy towards others will prevent us from being too pushy (v.6), making promises that disappoint (v.14), violating others' boundaries (v.16), and hurting those who are already in pain (v.20). See also 26:14.Daily challenge:Discipline in interpersonal interactions.Discipline extends to how we interact with others. We need to develop awareness of how they perceive us. Often they won't tell us directly, but they may leave subtle clues which the observant person will pick up on.Empathy is a matter not only of wisdom (understanding others), but of caring.Translations: First I read the NIV, and at the end of the podcast the RSV.Tomorrow: Proverbs 26
It's a double feature in this week's Off the Shelf with ISC! In today's episode of Off the Shelf, ISC Ensemble Member, Sam Breen, reads to you the humorous tales of Mark Twain's "The Wary Prayer," and "A Dog's Tale." Sam Breen is a Swiss/American actor, writer and educator and ISC company member. He has performed at The La Jolla Playhouse, The American Repertory Theater, PACT Zolverein (Germany), The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. His Los Angeles credits include: Macbeth at Antaeus, The Three Musketeers at Theatricum Botanicum, Flesh Eating Tiger at Highways. His Independent Shakespeare Company credits include: Mark Antony in Julius Caesar, Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Good Angel in Faustus, and the title role in the upcoming production of Macbeth. When asked why he chose these stories to read for Off the Shelf, Sam responded, “I’ve always loved Mark Twain's writing, but recording these narration pieces gave me the opportunity to discover his beautiful short stories for the first time. His writing is layered yet wonderfully accessible, idiosyncratic but with broad implications. The War Prayer is a snarky commentary about the fanfare. A Dog’s Tale is a touching story told from the point of view of a St-Bernard/Collie mix.” Enjoy this week's whimsical, waggish Art Break. Follow us! The War Prayer S1 E7 (9 Mar 94) vs. Duet S1 E19 (13 Jun 93)-”War Prayer” (1905) is a Mark Twain prose poem, originating from his disgust about the Spanish-US war & US occupation of the Philippines-Upon rewatching, G'Kar is inciting a crowd of Narn, Minbari, Drazi, & presumably other species from the League of Non-Aligned Worlds that Bob didn't recognize. Pointedly, no Centauri are in the crowd-The new delegate to the League was Mila Shar of Abba IV-Harris Yulin is famous for playing the hanging judge in Ghostbusters 2 (1989)-The great 90s cop show famous for its interrogation scenes is Homicide (1993-99)-The summary of the Andrew Robinson novel Stitch in Time (2000) about Garak's pre-history makes it sound like Garak's role in the Cardassian occupation of Bajor was minimal, with him being forced to work as a plain, simple tailor by Dukat for revenge. The Dafydd ab Hugh novel Courageous (1999) seems to have flashbacks on what Winn Adami did during the Cardassian occupation. Bob was mistaken about the Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens trilogy Millenium (2000), which seems like an alternate universe narrative. The Terok Nor trilogy (2008) seems to cover the whole history of the Bajoran occupation & the final novel, S.D. Perry & Britta Dennison Dawn of the Eagles, seems to partially cover Odo's time as security chief on Terok Nor when, according to the Memory Beta summary of the novel, he was an active collaborator w/ Kira & the Bajoran resistance against the Cardassian occupation. Bob read the Dean Wesley Smith & Kristine Kathryn Rusch novel Vectors (1999) when it came out, which deals w/ the Cardassian occupation, but Bob cannot remember any details about this disease novel other than the presence of Dr. Pulaski from the Next Generation & Odo-Although the paracanon of the novels seem to dispute this, we speculated that Odo's role as security chief under the Cardassian occupation was similar to Claude Rains's character as a Vichy French policeman in the great film Casablanca (1942) -For an in-depth history of nazis fleeing to Latin America, see the podcast TrueAnon's 5-part Spider Network series (2020, episodes 66, 74, 83, 87, & 89). Hal Holbrook has died at 95; Owen shares his Hal Holbrook story, defines skepticism in a positive way, and explores what Christians can learn from skeptics like Mark Twain, Abraham Lincoln, Jacob, Deborah, Tamar, Job and Paul. He also quotes from the writings of contemporary skeptics like Michael Shermer and Marilyn Price-Mitchell. Why we should teach skepticism and critical thinking to our children, and why skepticism should give us the ability to have constructive dialog about the existence of God while, in Michael Shermer's words, "keeping our emotions in check."Examples of honest skepticism in action throughout the Bible. The study applies Deuteronomy 17 to today's world, and sees in the words of Abraham, Daniel and the Apostle John, a harmony between questions and faith. Closing with a reading of Mark Twain's War Prayer.
In which we voice the praises of D.C. Fontana, a true sci-fi TV writing legend, and Jude and Ana definitely don't plot Justen's demise. “The War Prayer” begins the B5 tradition of awful exes, plus Vir is better over email and Delenn gives off strong distinguished queer vibes. “And The Sky Full of Stars” prompts Justen to ask if Sinclair is a Minbari plant, Ana to question why they're using VR to go into someone's mind when there's perfectly good telepaths right there, and Jude to marvel at Doctor Franklin not being awful.Connect with the show at @babylonpodjectJusten can be found at @justenwritesAna can be found at @The_Mianaai, and also made our show art. Both Ana and Justen can also be found on The Compleat Discography, a Discworld re-read podcast.Jude Vais can be found at @eremiticjude. (https://www.bobmurphyshow.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Norman-Horn-logo.jpg) Norman Horn is the founder and president of the Libertarian Christian Institute. He and Bob have a provocative conversation that will enlighten both believers and skeptics alike. They critically analyze the tendency of American Christians to support war, in its domestic and foreign applications. Norman gives Bob the best, succinct analysis of Romans 13 he has ever encountered. Bob ends (playing devil’s advocate) by challenging Norman to explain why the Church isn’t just as exploitative as the State. Why is it that the teachings of Jesus, like "Love your neighbor as you love yourself" and "Blessed Are the Peacemakers," take a back seat to millions of Christians that are influenced by the religious dogma known as Christian Zionism? In this short video, We Hold These Truths returns to Calvary Community Church (CCC) in Phoenix, AZ. One of our first vigils was held in front of this church in November of 2002, four months before the second war on Iraq started. Back in 2002, our signs like "Choose Life Not War," "Who Would Jesus Bomb?" "Blessed Are The Peacemakers," and "No More Wars For Israel" must have befuddled the congregants at CCC, because they came out and raised the Israeli flag. The occasion for this most recent vigil at CCC was the hosting of a "God's Heart For Israel" event sponsored by the organization Together For Israel. To demonstrate the war willingness of Christian Zionists to accept wars to protect Israel, the "War Prayer" by Christian Zionist preacher, John Hagee concludes this 4 minute video. To better understand the theology of Christian Zionism, watch our award winning documentary: "Christian Zionism: The Tragedy & The Turning, Part I."

A show about, among other things, the morality of the law journal system. We start with Joe’s ailments and our scheduling issues. (You’re welcome; we know this is why people tune in.) Then a little about online review sessions, Slack, online classes, and video conferencing (2:32). Radiohead, Trump, and Ted Cruz (9:02). Next we open the mail and Twitter bags: Carl Malamud, the re-christened Indigo Book, and the possibility of a transcript of one of our episodes, all followed by Chris Walker’s posts on Prawfsblawg about student law journal podcasts (13:19). Next, listener Justin on laptops in classrooms and unconstitutional and re-constitutional statutes (17:38), Bunny on Oral ArgCon cosplay (25:27). And then this week’s main topic: The weird world of law review publishing and the moral aspects of our participation in it (28:23), including Joe’s description of the process, Christian’s calling Expresso “Espresso” (35:03), the transition to electronic submission and the rise of “expedites” (47:00). “Just tell me what your thesis is.” “Why don’t you tell me what it is?” and morality (52:54). Joe’s world (1:08:19). Christian’s world (1:13:53). Like the Mark Twain short story itself (included as bonus audio at the end of the podcast), its namesake B5 episode “The War Prayer” is in no way, shape or form subtle. Find out what Erika, Shannon and Chip thought of this first foray into the B5 universe for legendary Star Trek writer D.C. Fontana.
Satan dreads our prayers. His concern is to keep us from praying simply because this is the primary location of the Christian's spiritual war.
When a racist underground group called Homeguard threatens the mission of Babylon 5 with increasing attacks on the station's alien population, it's up to Sinclair and Ivaonva to bring them to justice. Sunday morning sermon from January 6, 2013. Part of the Invisible War sermon series.
Our YouTube video, "John Hagee with Benny Hinn: Praying For War In The Name of Jesus" has had over 15,000 views during the first week. On this podcast we talked about the video and the waves it has caused. We also revisit the ethanol subsidy and its demise, for now.
Over 40,000,000 American Christians are influenced by what we call, "Angry Evangelicalism," better known as Christian Zionism. Christian Zionists like John Hagee and Benny Hinn wear a mantle of righteousness but often ignore the teachings of Jesus and invoke their will in the name of Jesus, ignoring declarations of Jesus like..."Blessed are the Peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God," "Love your neighbor as yourself" and, even "Love your enemy." No wonder so many people dislike and loathe Christians. Show this 4 minute video to your Christian Zionist relatives and friends and ask them "Who Would Jesus Bomb?" Just to prove to yourself that things have not changed much in over a hundred years, watch the video production of Mark Twain's "War Prayer."
