With minutes left to the bomb, Lauren panics, envisioning Kym and Will dead, just as everyone died at the ATST. As the blood of the PS member spreads, Kieran launches himself at the door, trying to shove it open. Lauren contemplates defusing the bomb, but can't, and they can't communicate with the bomb squad either. Together, they try slamming the door down, but are unsuccessful. Meanwhile, the APD is evacuating the surroundings. We learn that Will refused to leave without Kym, and Kym hopes that Lauren is safe. But Lauren is still slamming herself at the door with Kieran, her vision blurring out, until they realize the futility. They slouch down together against the wall, where Lauren reaches out to hold Kieran's hand (!) and tells him she is glad she met him (!!). Kieran responds in kind, and when he sees Lauren's distress at dying, pulls her in for a hug (!!!). When he feels her hand trembling atop his, he turns his hand to hold hers. While Lauren is nestled against him, Kieran, sensing the end, is about to make a confession. But we never find out what the confession is, as Lauren spots the vents and decides to run through them, holding the bomb with 5 minutes left. Outside, Will and Kym are reunited, but the good news is short. Someone spots Lune coming out of a vent and notifies a very distressed looking Tristan. Kym and Lauren manage to share a glance in each other's eyes. Someone (Kieran?) notices that this is the wing where the PS was throwing nitro bottles (aka tunnel location). With 5 seconds left, Kym rushes towards the building, but it explodes in a fury of flame and debris. Kym calls out for Lauren and tries to run to the building, but Will stops her midscream, wisely protecting them both. Kym buckles to her knees, sobbing in grief, Will protectively holding his arm around her. We see a panel of Kieran's knife and Lauren's gun, scattered on the floor, eerily reminiscent of Dylan's hat. And through Lauren's semi-closed eyelids, looking out on the flames from a sprawled position on the floor, we see young Dylan, walking through the chaos, leaning down and calling out to her, "Ren? Where are you going?" Is it a hallucination? Is it Sandman coming to rescue her? Did they manage to escape into the tunnels? Will they use this to stage their own deaths? Will Kieran and Lauren be outed as Lune? Will thinking that Lauren and Kieran are dead spur an awakening in Will and Bella? So many mysteries waiting to be answered in Season 3! Recorded in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. ***

We open the episode with a frightening adjurement to a circus-tattooed person to capture (only) one of the Lune members alive. While Lauren marvels at Kieran's sharpshooting ability, he pulls her to safety and freaks out over her being shot. We freak out over him freaking out and his face touch! And her hand touch when she tries to calm him down. We theorize that Kieran is traumatized with what happened to his protectee. Regardless, their connection is strengthening and we are in love. While Lauren and Kieran decide to go save the day, Will and Kym are trying to save Lukas, who hasn't lost his sharp tongue. The PS member takes advantage of Lauki's catwalk, and shoots some piping straight down, separating the catwalk and our beloved couples. Both Lauren and Kym urge their partner to go on, promising to reunite... And we all know what happens to dramatic promises made in times of crisis. Recorded in Barcelona, Spain. ***

Yet Lauren Armes, founder of Welltodo, is quick to share that getting to a place of doing her heart’s work didn’t come quickly. Lauren spent the early part of her career undecided what to study, if she’d even like it, and eventually finding herself in a role in a manufacturing firm. It was the exposure to the variety of business areas that kept her creative, entrepreneurial mind busy and growing for years. But when her comfort started to set in, she knew she needed a change. While Lauren is now seen as an expert in the wellness industry—helping experts and coaches to “make a mark, make an impact, and make money”—in this podcast episode you get to hear more of her personal journey. Three of the main principles of her coaching are Transformative thinking, Mindfulness or Mindful Eating, and Movement (which, not coincidentally, spell out the initials of The Model Mentor). Our guest on this episode of Discover Lafayette is Lauren Bercier, co-founder and CEO of Something Borrowed Blooms, a rent and return floral boutique in Upper Lafayette located at 102 Max Drive.  Created with her cousin and co-founder Laken Swan in 2015, Something Borrowed Blooms’ design team creates wedding flower collections using premium silk flowers. Lauren Bercier with co-founder (and cousin) Laken Swan The floral arrangements, boutonnieres, table arrangements, and other designs are rented out to brides across the U. S and Canada and delivered in a manner similar to Amazon Prime. The bride receives her shipment two days prior to the wedding date with a prepaid return label and packaging to make the receipt and return stress-free and enjoyable. The shipment is topped with a liner that treats the recipient to the scent of fresh flowers. The concept is similar to Rent the Runway where you can rent premium clothing for a fraction of the cost. In the case of a typical wedding, brides may spend $2000 to $3500 and up for flowers. They can rent similar arrangements from Something Borrowed Blooms for $500.00 and pocket the rest of their budget to be spent on other needs or perhaps, put in the bank for a rainy day! Millennials bring a different sensibility in planning a wedding today than in days gone by. Many are marrying at a later age, paying for the wedding themselves, and are cost-conscious. Wedding budgets have been on the decline and millennials are more focused on the experience rather than needlessly overspending on the dress or flowers. Changing trends have opened the door to acceptance of this new rental concept which can provide great cost savings. Something Borrowed Blooms was chosen in 2018 as Startup of the Year by Junior Achievement of Acadiana 21st Business Hall of Fame." While Lauren and Laken originally envisioned 12 weddings a month as a successful business endeavor, the company in 2020 now ships out approximately 500 floral packages a month. Business has steadily increased and the company experienced a 248% growth in sales in 2019. Lauren and Laken keep up with current trends in bridal fare by attending the annual Bridal Fashion Week. 2019 color trends leaned to muted dusty mauves and roses. In 2020, the popular colors are jewel tones with a deep green being popular. Something Borrowed Blooms' most popular collection has been the 'Olivia' which is a soft, muted palette of ivory roses, mini ranunculus, rosemary & olive bushes. Other popular collections include the "Taylor" Collection which is composed of antique beige peonies, lavender scabiosa, and a variety of ivory-colored roses, as well as the 'Jane' and 'Cameron' Collections, all of which you can view here. The Olivia Collection outsells all others by three to one.Olivia Aisle Marker is one example of accessories that may be rented. The newest option is the Taylor Collection with antique beige peonies. Lauren's advice for other entrepreneurs who are starting up their own business: Find your # 1 thing that differentiates you. If you copy what others are doing, you will be lost in the crowd. Something Borrowed Blooms is on the fast-track to achieving great success by following Lauren's sage advice of finding that perfect niche market, and of course, through the team's sheer discipline and hard work! Ep 44 Lauren Cascio: How Abartys Health is Upgrading the Insurance Industry

Crossing Borders with Nathan Lustig

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 12, 2018 51:07

The US healthcare market loses up to US$750B in fraud and inefficiencies every year. The insurance industry is famously bureaucratic and relies on antiquated technology to communicate with healthcare providers and patients. My guest today is Lauren Cascio, co-founder and COO of Abartys Health, a health insurance tech company that created a system that allows seamless data flow and communication between insurers, doctors and patients in Latin America and the United States. Lauren was selected by Walmart as one of Puerto Rico’s most promising business leaders, made the Caribbean’s 40 under 40 list, and was a finalist for the Forbes 30 under 30. Lauren is also proud to have delivered the winning pitch at SXSW's ReleaseIT competition in 2017 and Parallel 18 Accelerator's Investor Choice at the 2017 Demo Day. While Lauren didn’t originally set out to become an entrepreneur, she has always loved taking risks and learning from her mistakes. We talk about her decision to teach herself how to code and what she’s learned from starting and scaling a business in Puerto Rico. We also discuss the Puerto Rican startup ecosystem and why it can be an advantage to growing startups. Abartys Health: Bringing technology and health insurance together Lauren’s “do-it-yourself” attitude was a big part of the inspiration for Abartys Health. After teaching herself to code as a distraction from her divorce, Lauren became obsessed with connecting her newfound passion for technology to her interest in the health insurance industry. Her tip for founders who are teaching themselves programming: learn enough to get by until you can hire someone who knows what they are doing. Listen to this episode to hear more of Lauren’s advice for teaching yourself tech skills from square one. The benefits of operating a business in Puerto Rico Puerto Rico is the middle-ground between Latin America and the United States. It boasts a tax regime and standard of living that make PR an ideal location to start a business that straddles the two regions. Abartys operates in Latin America and the US, meaning Lauren and her co-founder, Dolmarie Mendez, have to understand how sales cycles differ between the US and Latin America. Just getting into the office of an insurance company in Latin America might require several coffee or dinner meetings, while the process in the US might be faster. Find out how operating from Puerto Rico helps Abartys Health do business across borders in this episode of Crossing Borders. What Lauren learned from the Parallel 18 accelerator Parallel 18 is an equity-free accelerator program in San Juan, Puerto Rico, that works similarly to Start-Up Chile. I was introduced to the Handel Group over 3 years ago by Mastin Kipp who coached in their life coaching method. Ever since I've followed closely them work and even interviewed their former president Laurie Gerber in 2013 the year this podcast began. Since then became aware of their founder and today's guest Lauren Handel Zander as the tough, 'says it like it is', 'no non-sense' life-coach to successful people such as  Dr. Mark Hyman and Elena Brower. She recently launched her first book Maybe It's You and when her publicist reached out for her to come on the podcast, I said absolutely and immediately set a date. We met a few weeks ago in person to record this between her packed day of client sessions and meetings. While Lauren is indeed tough which you'll hear in this episode, she is also deeply caring, empathetic, and full of wisdom. As she says, she deeply loves human beings and believes everyone is capable of living their dream if they simply release some blocks and negative patterns preventing them from coming true. That's where her and her life-coaching comes in. We spoke about her story of how she came to this work as well as got into how-to apply it using me as a guinea pig. We spoke on facing your darkness, calling out all your lies, what a lie lists is and why it's helpful in personal growth, time management and developing a relationship with time, and getting clear on your dreams. “Employees are trusted more than the organizations they work for.” Citing this simple stat from the Edelman Trust Barometer, Adobe’s Lauren Friedman described her job in a nutshell. As the head of Global Social Business Enablement, Friedman spends her time doing just that. Social engagement, activation, and advocacy across Adobe. We discussed all of this and more on this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast. Enjoy This Episode Now Download Episode Subscribe via iTunes Subscribe via Stitcher About Lauren Friedman Lauren Friedman is the head of Global Social Business Enablement at Adobe. She’s a social marketing authority, with extensive experience working with brands such as Safeway, Levi’s, Hyatt and Disney, to create their social personas, nurture their Facebook and Twitter communities and curate their social conversations. She is currently working across Adobe functions to enable all employees to be successful using social for marketing and community building. Episode Highlights So, what is Global Social Business Enablement? “It’s a mouthful! I infuse social into every aspect of how Adobe does business. I help employees stay true to the Adobe brand and also help them build their personal brand.” Why does personal branding matter? “We believe that people trust people. People buy from people. Relationships fuel our overall success.” While Lauren works to engage employees via social media through one-on-one coaching, they don’t want to brainwash people. “We don’t want to create an army of Adobe-bots!” “I’m product agnostic,” said Friedman. “I can work with the sales team, HR, or product teams. My favorite part of my job is finding a-ha moments.” When employees are able to see how social media engagement impacts their job. What does brand advocacy mean at Adobe? “It’s both internal and external. It started with the employees taking what they’d learned in our Social Shift program. From there, we started thinking — how can we get influencers and customers involved?” Ultimately, Adobe wants everyone to be a part of their brand experience. This was at the forefront during their recent Adobe Remix campaign, where they encouraged creatives to reimagine their logo. Talk about trust! What brand has made Lauren smile recently? “I love brands that do cool, innovative things that step outside of their corporate box.” Examples that have made her smile recently include Baileys for their Instagram soap opera (below) and IHOP’s use of Facebook Live.   To learn more, you can follow Lauren on Twitter and Instagram.
