Chris and I took a trip to the Gluten Free & Allergy Friendly Expo in Secaucus, NJ a weekend ago and for a whopping $12 per person (we signed up early) we had 4 hours of sampling delicious gluten-free goodies that mostly did not contain egg otherwise. Listen to our on the spot podcast from the event, and take a look below at all the images we snapped along the way. Ronzoni had a cute photo booth. I didn't realize after we took a photo we both got a full box of gluten-free pasta to take home. Whoop! Here's a list of all of the companies at the expo. There were A LOT to choose from and try out. Some local restaurants, as well as large companies and small bakeries. Halfway through we had started limiting our tastings because we were getting full. Most of the sponsors provided either a snack or coupons in our bags. Every vendor provided lots of coupons which was great to remember which I liked and what I'd like to try again or see what's in the store. We managed to finagle a day without the kids, but there were a ton of kiddos around the expo and they had various places set up for them to play in. Even race cars that Chris stopped to do as well for the kids. After two hours of making our way through the entire expo, we took a seat and recorded our thoughts. Mr. Podcast Man himself. The House of #Edtech guy. We used a portable recording device he purchased last year which has come in handy on several occasions. I like recording my individual episodes on it so I can sit anywhere in the house, or outdoors and share my learning. While I am heading in a no to low grain dive in my life, I still love my friend Bob from Bob's Red Mill. He's been a lifesaver when it comes to having to eat gluten-free. We noticed they have an egg replacer to try, so that may make its way into our pantry at some point if I ever run out of aquafaba. Notice my Wasa pasta lapel pin I've come to love... it's gluten free ;) Right before we left, I saw a long line for a Brooklyn Bakery and thought, let me see, let me see... this was the most delicious bread I've tasted in a long time! You keep it frozen and then toast it when you're in the mood for a slice. Perfect! Gluten-free bread can sometimes go stale far faster than glutenous bread, so this method makes it stay for quite a time. Plus, while most of their items used eggs, this one did not, so I quickly bought 2 loaves to stock away for when I needed a sandwich. Delicious and egg-free, too! Best bread I've found from a semi-local gluten-free bakery. Scharr tops my list as well as my own homemade bread or using Bob's kit for bread, too. The expo was really nice. You can listen more to what I learned while there and if we ever plan to return in the future. Check out the episode!

Big triumphs are often followed by bigger letdowns. Our series premiere is about hitting a snag. Vallery Lomas won season four of The Great American Baking Show, but her season never aired due to sexual misconduct allegations against one of the show's judges, Johnny Iuzzini. Mikkel Borg Bjergsø was once a champion runner. After opening his brewery, Mikkeller, he found the steady supply of beer had a negative effect on his stamina. The solution to his problem became a world-wide phenomenon. Alison Roman released her acclaimed cookbook, Dining In, in October 2017. When her recipe for Salted Chocolate Chunk Shortbread Cookies went viral, she became their Instagram "stage mom" and had to learn to deal with some unexpected haters. Finally, one of the biggest triumphs for NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio was the installation of universal free lunch for all public school students. While City Hall celebrated, workers in lunch rooms across the city faced the realization that they would soon be understaffed and overworked. Love Meat + Three? Today's guest might be the brightest and most magnetic person in the world.  I connected with Ash after I read an article my friend Deenie wrote for Refinery 29 about her experience getting an intuitive tattoo in Brooklyn. I was intrigued and enamored with the concept of an intuitive Soul Tattoo and  wanted to know more. The intuitive tattoo artist was Ashley Glynn, an illustrator, photographer, tarot reader, and spiritual healer living in Brooklyn at the time. After connecting with Ash over email and running into her at the space she worked out of in Brooklyn, Minka she agreed to do the podcast. It took us forever to schedule but eventually one perfect night this fall we drank tea and talked for hours. Ash has such a joyful, angelic, calming aura about her. As soon as I walked into the apartment she was staying at my heart rate lowered. I loved every second of our heart warming conversation that covered her entire life-story including being raised by her southern tarot loving grandmother, touring with Stevie Nicks, losing her beloved grandmother, art school, fashion school, and eventually discovering her passion: soul tattooing. We discuss self-care, tapping into your intuition, why we need to slow down, how we hold energy in our bodies, the importance of being comfortable in your body and skin, being embodied, grounded, connecting to breath,  feeling empowered, breath work, flower medicine, and much more. A few years ago I realized my body is something called hypermobile meaning my joints easily move beyond the normal range expected. While I loved teaching and practicing yoga, I wanted to try something for more strengthening. My best friend at the time was training to become a pilates instructor giving me the ideal opportunity to become her Guinea pig and explore pilates. Turns out I loved it. When I moved to NYC I hoped I'd find a studio I loved. Luckily, I stumbled upon Six Street Pilates and discovered the very cool owner Anula. From her style, to her instagram, to her philosophy and teaching I knew I wanted to have her on the podcast, attend her all her classes, and become her friend. We struggled to find a time to sit down to record this between her travel schedule and mine this fall so eventually we settled on recording this late one evening. We're both pretty sleepy and loopy by the end which makes the episode weird and special. We discuss community, being 'familiar strangers,' in-person connections, the Potato Method, what pilates is, and it’s history, the combination of pilates and art, impostor syndrome, feeling bad and that being okay, depression, the problem with the term ‘body diversity,’ and so much more.  Notes from the Show:-Anula's Website | Facebook  | Instagram  | Twitter | Vimeo | Tumblr-Anula's article about body shaming on social media that she wrote-Anula on Well + Good -Aziz Ansari's SNL monologue post election-Music: -Book: Call Me by Your Name  Cool Things to Check-Out:-Interested in learning how to launch your own podcast? I talk about saying yes to too much, buckets of life, my general feeling of overwhelm as well as sharing what I've been loving and grateful for in the last month.  This week I interviewed the smart, genuine, and fascinating entrepreneur Karen Behnke founder of my favorite make-up brand Juice Beauty.  I'm obsessed with their products so I'm real happy I loved Karen their founder just as much. She honestly was one of the nicest, most down-to-earth people I've ever interviewed for this podcast. In this episode we talk about how we're both from Michigan, wellness in the 80’s, being vegetarian, being an entrepreneur, why green apples are great for your skin and how much we both love eating them with cinnamon on them, using food for beauty, finding your passions and turning that into a profession, motherhood, body-image, the sexism she's experienced in her career, what working with  Gwyneth Paltrow is like and so much more. This is a very robust episode, hope you like it all! I was introduced to the Handel Group over 3 years ago by Mastin Kipp who coached in their life coaching method. Ever since I've followed closely them work and even interviewed their former president Laurie Gerber in 2013 the year this podcast began. Since then became aware of their founder and today's guest Lauren Handel Zander as the tough, 'says it like it is', 'no non-sense' life-coach to successful people such as  Dr. Mark Hyman and Elena Brower. She recently launched her first book Maybe It's You and when her publicist reached out for her to come on the podcast, I said absolutely and immediately set a date. We met a few weeks ago in person to record this between her packed day of client sessions and meetings. While Lauren is indeed tough which you'll hear in this episode, she is also deeply caring, empathetic, and full of wisdom. As she says, she deeply loves human beings and believes everyone is capable of living their dream if they simply release some blocks and negative patterns preventing them from coming true. That's where her and her life-coaching comes in. We spoke about her story of how she came to this work as well as got into how-to apply it using me as a guinea pig. As many Americans look to cut back on gluten, alternatives like almond flour are really having a moment. Made with 100 percent sweet almonds, it’s the perfect alternative to traditional white flours but lends a unique flavor that can take desserts to the next level. On this episode of Fresh Pickings, we looking at one small nut’s journey through the mill, and how almond flour can transform everything you thought you knew about baking. We start at the source: the almond. The almond is native to an area stretching from the northern Indian subcontinent westwards to Syria, Israel, and Turkey. It was spread by humans in ancient times along the shores of the Mediterranean into northern Africa and southern Europe and more recently transported to other parts of the world, notably California. Host Kat Johnson is joined by Cynthia Malaran (also known as DJ Cherishtheluv), the host of Wedding Cake, who shares her childhood memories of discovering that the almond isn't actually a nut, but a fruit. She bit into what she thought was an apple, but discovered a sour taste and large seed. Cynthia also shares some health info about the notoriously healthy almond: they provide a good amount of manganese and vitamin E, as well as a healthy serving of monounsaturated fats. Not only do they have a healthy boost of protein, they are also very low in carbohydrates and inherently gluten free. When they are ground into a flour they add moistness and a rich nutty taste to baked goods. To wrap things up, Kat speaks to Eli Sussman, host of The Line. He shares his recipe for Almond Flourless Cake, which he serves at his Williamsburg restaurant, Samesa. Fresh Pickings is powered by Simplecast.

If someone offered you a "bag of nooch," or a "sprinkle of hippie dust," would you take it? If you’re a pizza-loving vegan, you probably would! This episode of Fresh Pickings explores the world of nutritional yeast (and reveals its various street names). Nutritional yeast is the deactivated (or dead) form of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae – the mother of all yeast strains. Dave Arnold of Cooking Issues joins Kat to teach her more about the science behind "brewer's yeast" – how it's grown, cultured (deactivated) to create nutritional yeast, and then packaged for our consumption. If you've ever tried nutritional yeast before, you know that it packs a umami punch. For that reason, it's particularly popular among vegetarians and vegans as a way to add a savory seasoning to dishes. Flax is an amazingly versatile food and fiber crop. In fact, it’s one of the oldest fiber crops in the world, known to have been cultivated in ancient Egypt and China. If it seems like flax is good for everything, that’s because it is. Its Latin name is usitatissimum, which means “most useful.” On this episode, Kat talks to Harry Rosenblum, host of Feast Yr Ears here on Heritage Radio Network, about all things flaxseed. Did you know: Flaxseed sprouts are edible, with a slightly spicy flavor. In northern India, flaxseed, called tisi or alsi, is traditionally roasted, powdered, and eaten with boiled rice, a little water, and a little salt, and used in Savji curries. The seed of the plant is edible, but grinding it into meal unlocks its health benefits and makes it more readily digested. Flaxseed meal can be added to bread, pancakes, muffins, bars, cookies, and all sorts of other recipes to provide a nice nutty flavor and a nutritional punch. To learn more about how we can incorporate flaxseed into recipes, Kat is joined by her friend and VLGL blogger, Elizabeth Taylor. Elizbeth's VLGL diet is a whole-foods, plant-based way of cooking and eating that emphasizes non-starchy vegetables, whole fruits, nuts, legumes, seeds, and certain whole grains.

Are you confused about the difference between muesli and granola? On this episode of Fresh Pickings, we’re going to help you sort out that difference by doing a deep dive into the world of muesli. Host Kat Johnson welcomes Linda Pelaccio, host of A Taste of the Past, to talk about the inventor of muesli: Swiss physician and nutritional pioneer, Maximilian Bircher-Benner. His original recipe consisted of oat flakes, raw apples, condensed milk, nuts, and lemon juice and was based on the diet of alpine shepherds, who Dr. Bircher-Benner saw as being particularly vital and healthy. He prescribed muesli it to his patients and saw overwhelming improvements in their health. Dr. Bircher-Benner determined that much of the sickness experienced by his patients could be alleviated with increased exercise and a more nutritious diet. Then, instead of our usual recipe segment, Michael Harlan Turkell, host of The Food Seen, brings us a special interview with Bob Moore himself. Bob shares the origin story of his famous muesli. Ever wonder how your two pound burrito could possibly fit all of those ingredients without exploding? Well, that’s all thanks to masa, the corn flour used to make tortillas, sopas, and pupusas. While solid masa dough is traditionally sold in Mexican grocery stores in the refrigerator aisle, Bob’s Red Mill makes things easier by offering a nonperishable powdered version of the same stuff. In Spanish, masa harina literally translates to “dough flour”, and when mixed with water, transforms into a malleable dough that can be used in a variety of dishes. How is masa harina made? What is it used for? To learn more about the science behind masa (which involves the process of nixtamalization) Kat interviews Dave Arnold, co-host of Cooking Issues. Masa and cornmeal are made from the sameprimary ingredient, but they are processed quite differently and have different outcomes when cooked. After corn is softened by lime water, some of the oil is broken down into emulsifying agents, and corn proteins are bonded to each other in the process. That's what makes it possible to form a dough from masa without introducing a bonding agent, such as the gluten in flour. To get some tips about cooking sweet treats with masa harina, Kat visits Fany Gerson at the Flatiron location of Dough, her hand-made donut shop. Fany is one of the most authoritative voices on Mexican pastries and frozen desserts, and she shares a recipe for Tamal de Limón (Lime Zest Tamales) from her first book, My Sweet Mexico.

What is "paleo?" The Paleolithic diet is a nutritional program based on foods available to humans living in that era. In 2012, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics described paleo as one of the "latest trends" in diets. And in 2013 it was Google's most searched weight-loss method. Of the estimated 80 billion people who have ever lived out a life span on Earth, more than 90% of them have foraged for all of their food. In other words, foraging and paleo go hand-in-hand. To learn more about it, Kat is joined by Cathy Erway, host of Eat Your Words, who has discovered you can forage right here in Brooklyn. Tune in to hear what plants Cathy is able to find in Prospect Park and how she uses them in her cooking. Next, Kat talks to Harry Rosenblum, host of Feast Yr Ears, about the paleo diet, paleo foods, and paleo flours. Add the oats and shake or stir the pan to coat them all in the oil. Reduce heat to medium-low and sprinkle with the salt, pepper and optional cayenne. Cook, stirring frequently, another 1-2 minutes or until the oats appear lightly toasted (careful to watch for any signs or smells of over-toasting or burning). Remove from the pan immediately and set aside to cool. Toss the lettuces and the peach slices in a large bowl, and drizzle in the balsamic vinegar and remaining olive oil. Toss to coat thoroughly, and divide amongst serving dishes. Top each with the cooled oat topping and serve immediately. Fresh Pickings is proudly supported by Bob's Red Mill. Sexual impotence—a loss of ability to maintain a full erection—affects most men at some time in their lives. It can be the result of feeling unwelcome, afraid of your own power, or experiencing a sense of inadequacy or depression about yourself. Such feelings strongly influence the behavior of your body. And when you can develop real awareness of how your lover feels, with patience and consideration, psychologically-caused impotence will often clear by itself. Other difficulties in maintaining an erection can be biochemical in nature. In men over the age of 35, this often happens during periods of prolonged stress, after illness, or simply as a result of having lived for too long on convenience foods, so your body has become depleted in essential minerals, trace elements and vitamins. When you have eaten like this, many of your metabolic processes no longer work properly. Then it’s time to make some serious changes in the way you are eating, and keep your alcohol intake to a minimum. In the meantime, there are a number of effective plants for heightening your sexual energy: Mucuna Dop Mucuna Dopa—this is a powerful Ayurvedic herb, also known as velvet herb. A potent extract from the Mucuna pruriens seed, it heightens brain function, libido and muscle growth. It contains high concentrations of L-Dopa, a neurotransmitter which prompts a positive mental state of action and assertiveness. These are a few of the reasons Mucuna Dopa is an effective sexual enhancer for men. Start by taking one 166mg capsule between meals (containing 100mg of L-Dopa). Never take more than 6 a day and do not use if you are taking MAO inhibitors or any prescription drugs without first getting permission from your medical practitioner. Ginkgo biloba Ginkgo biloba—not only boosts the flow of blood to the brain and enhances memory; it can increase circulation to the penis. The best way to take it for this purpose is in the form of a concentrated 24% standardized extract capsule, once or twice a day. Do not take more, since in large quantities gingko can cause loose bowels and irritability. One research project gave men 80 milligrams of gingko extract three times a day, with excellent results. It not only cleared impotence, it lifted the depression which often accompanies it. You can also get a ginkgo tincture: 1 teaspoon in a little water twice a day. Horny goat weed Horny goat weed—has been known for 2000 years in traditional Chinese medicine to enhance both male and female libido. It increases blood circulation to the genitals. A study carried out in 2008 indicated that it can be as effective as Viagra but without the dangerous side-effects. One 1 gram tablet daily between meals is the usual recommended dose. Fava beans Fava beans—can have an astounding effect on an erection. The first written record of this food’s sexual benefits comes from ancient Rome, where Cicero used it to increase his own passion. Fava is also a good natural source of L-dopa (used to treat Parkinson’s disease). It intensifies erections in many men, which is how fava got its reputation. One way to use fava beans is to make soup from them. Whatever products you buy it is essential that they are top quality and organic. Be warned, there are lots of cheap imitations which do not deliver on their promises. See below for my recommendations.
