It's time for another guest episode of The Limitless Life Experience Podcast, and this time I'm chatting to the amazing Lauren Derrett. She's a mother of 4, step mother of 2, and founder of reusable sanitary towel brand taking the world by storm - Wear ‘Em Out, but as you'll find out in this episode, she's had a number of ventures and projects that have led her to wear she is now. We first met several years ago when we were in the same hypnobirthing organisation; Lauren became my doula, and has been a coaching client of mine since then too. In this episode, she takes us right back to the beginning, telling us how she went from dropping out of school at 14 to being the successful business owner she is today. We reveal the flip side of success, and all the stress that goes on behind the scenes of a business, as well as the pressure to show up and be the face of a brand. Today’s show is about an important topic that isn’t talked about very often. We’ve all heard of morning sickness, but there is a much more severe condition called hyperemesis gravidarum. It brings all-day nausea and vomiting and can result in significant physical and emotional effects. Lauren Harris is a married mother of three kids who lives in western Massachusetts. She’s a licensed mental health counselor who owns the Center for Perinatal Wellness. Lauren is also the Western Massachusetts Regional Coordinator for Postpartum Support International. In today’s show, Lauren shares her story of hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) through three separate pregnancies. We’ll hear how she learned of her condition and dealt with for a very long time with little support. Lauren also shares about her struggles with postpartum anxiety, along with how her experiences propelled her into the field of perinatal mental health. Show Highlights: Lauren’s story of her surprise pregnancy at age 22 with her daughter, Natalie, now 13 At eight weeks, Lauren was hit with incredible nausea that kept her vomiting up to 12 times each day; she was unable to keep food/liquids down, but was told it was “normal.” There were four separate times that Lauren was hospitalized for IV fluids due to dehydration; she lost 40 pounds during the first 20 weeks of her pregnancy. She was frustrated that no one took her seriously, and she couldn’t work or function each day, which put a financial strain on their family. Late in her pregnancy, she was prescribed Zofran, which was the only thing that would help. Her parents helped pay the out-of-pocket cost at $90 per pill; Lauren had to take three pills daily for several weeks. What it felt like to be told that her extreme sickness was “normal” Why Lauren had the conversation with her mother about terminating her pregnancy How HG affected Lauren’s work as a mental health counselor How Lauren met the emotional challenges to keep going day by day After a 23-hour induction, her perfectly healthy baby girl was born, weighing 8 lbs. 11 oz. Why the birth was followed by a D & C because of a hemorrhage Four years later, Lauren was pregnant with her second child; she had similar nausea and vomiting but felt much more supported by her medical team With her third pregnancy, she took more care with rest and hydration but experienced much more postpartum anxiety The irony was that as the HG improved with each pregnancy, the anxiety issues became worse How Lauren coped by using therapy and medication Why Lauren was propelled into perinatal mental health work by her personal experiences Lauren’s practice has three clinicians now but is looking to expand soon because the need is so great What Lauren learned about HG and herself Resources: Email Lauren: lauren@laureneharris.com Lauren’s practice: www.cpw.care Find the Center for Perinatal Wellness on Facebook
Lauren Brown says college was "culture shock." Most of the students at her high school were Black, but most of the students at the University of Missouri were white. And she got to the university in the fall of 2015, when Black students led protests in response to a string of racist incidents. The protests put Mizzou in the national news. But the news stories didn't match what Lauren saw. They made it seem like racism on campus was an aberration. And they made it seem like Black student organizing was new at Mizzou. What Lauren saw was "Black Mizzou," a thriving campus-within-a-campus that Black students have built over decades to make the university a more welcoming place.

Meow Wolf's House of Eternal Return, Santa Fe, New Mexico. (Photo by Kate Russell, courtesy of Meow Wolf, and used with permission.). What is Meow Wolf? A DIY arts and music community? An immersive experience, based on emerging technology plus storytelling? A learning space with regular workshops, entertainment and art therapy? A network of creatives who give back to the community? Yes! All of the above. Technically, Meow Wolf describes itself as "an arts and entertainment group, based in Santa Fe, New Mexico". Established in 2008 as an art collective, they have an installation called the "House of Eternal Return" which covers 20,000 square feet. The experience, when visitors enter, starts with a deceptively normal-looking house. Then, it progresses into a science-fiction and surreal experience, which involves both augmented and virtual reality. And Meow Wolf is about to expand its community! In 2020, they'll open a new location in Las Vegas. In 2021, they're also scheduled to open a site in Denver. Lauren Cason is Meow Wolf's Creative Director of XR. We talked about XR, the story of Meow Wolf, and what visitors can experience when they come to Meow Wolf's main installation. Lauren, who mentors young women in video game art and design, also offered some of her favorite (free) resources for game creation--and shared the name of a favorite book for artists! On this edition of Over Coffee®, you will hear: How a serendipitous occurrence led to Lauren's interest in XR; The ways her creative journey proceeded from there; What first led Lauren to come on board at Meow Wolf; How Lauren herself describes Meow Wolf; Her definition of XR (what is it, anyway?); How the artists in the collective give back to artist communities throughout the nation; One of Lauren's favorite memorable moments from the original installation, House of Eternal Return; The origins of the arts collective's unique name!; How Meow Wolf was created; Some of the special arts events which the venue hosts; A look inside House of Eternal Return; What Lauren most wants to teach the young women whom she mentors, about game development; Some of her favorite free or inexpensive resources for game development; One of the best creative lessons Lauren has learned, since the start of her career as an artist; And, a book she especially recommends!

Today’s conversation is really about finding balance, protecting your needs, being self-serving, and focusing on lifting yourself up. Because, when you help yourself first, you help others just by being. When you really understand what being “selfish” means you create an environment that elevates not only you but everyone around you — your friends and family. Talking about balance is easy, but understanding yourself, setting strong boundaries, and really putting all of this into practice can be challenging. Which is why we have special guest Lauren Kleinman joining us today! Lauren is a Marketing and Growth Consultant for direct-to-consumer, impact-driven health and wellness companies. She runs her own company, Lauren Kleinman Consultancy, and is extremely passionate about helping emerging, innovative brands tackle big challenges. Join us as we get deep and talk about the importance of honoring your space first, and others second; creating a space of self-care so you are motivated by love and others around you (and vice-versa); how to set boundaries; and work with intention. Lauren also tells us all about her journey from working for a company to starting her own, how she found her work/life balance, how she has worked through conflict, and highlights some of the best parts of working for yourself! The US healthcare market loses up to US$750B in fraud and inefficiencies every year. The insurance industry is famously bureaucratic and relies on antiquated technology to communicate with healthcare providers and patients. My guest today is Lauren Cascio, co-founder and COO of Abartys Health, a health insurance tech company that created a system that allows seamless data flow and communication between insurers, doctors and patients in Latin America and the United States. Lauren was selected by Walmart as one of Puerto Rico’s most promising business leaders, made the Caribbean’s 40 under 40 list, and was a finalist for the Forbes 30 under 30. Lauren is also proud to have delivered the winning pitch at SXSW's ReleaseIT competition in 2017 and Parallel 18 Accelerator's Investor Choice at the 2017 Demo Day. While Lauren didn’t originally set out to become an entrepreneur, she has always loved taking risks and learning from her mistakes. We talk about her decision to teach herself how to code and what she’s learned from starting and scaling a business in Puerto Rico. We also discuss the Puerto Rican startup ecosystem and why it can be an advantage to growing startups. Abartys Health: Bringing technology and health insurance together Lauren’s “do-it-yourself” attitude was a big part of the inspiration for Abartys Health. After teaching herself to code as a distraction from her divorce, Lauren became obsessed with connecting her newfound passion for technology to her interest in the health insurance industry. Her tip for founders who are teaching themselves programming: learn enough to get by until you can hire someone who knows what they are doing. Listen to this episode to hear more of Lauren’s advice for teaching yourself tech skills from square one. The benefits of operating a business in Puerto Rico Puerto Rico is the middle-ground between Latin America and the United States. It boasts a tax regime and standard of living that make PR an ideal location to start a business that straddles the two regions. Abartys operates in Latin America and the US, meaning Lauren and her co-founder, Dolmarie Mendez, have to understand how sales cycles differ between the US and Latin America. Just getting into the office of an insurance company in Latin America might require several coffee or dinner meetings, while the process in the US might be faster. Find out how operating from Puerto Rico helps Abartys Health do business across borders in this episode of Crossing Borders. What Lauren learned from the Parallel 18 accelerator Parallel 18 is an equity-free accelerator program in San Juan, Puerto Rico, that works similarly to Start-Up Chile. After Lauren turned in the application on the last day, she and her co-founder went through an intense acceleration program where the mentors “tore apart” their marketing, logo, and business model to push them to grow faster. Abartys Health recently received a round of funding with support from Parallel 18’s follow-on fund. Listen to the episode to how Parallel 18 is helping build Puerto Rico’s startup ecosystem by investing in companies like Abartys. Healthcare is beginning to feel the effects of developments in artificial intelligence and data accessibility, despite its history as an antiquated industry resistant to change. Abartys Health is changing how population data is managed and utilized in the insurance industry using technology that brings more transparency and efficiency into the industry. Listen to the rest of the episode to hear why Lauren and Dolmarie are expanding Abartys into Latin America, and where Lauren thinks the healthcare industry is going next. If you're going to have a discussion, be positive about it. Don't tear people down for trying. - Lauren Singer Have you ever thought about how much trash you create in a day? My juice comes in plastic bottles, my prepared meals come in plastic containers, my favorite to go meal from my favorite restaurant comes in a plastic bowl in a plastic bag. It's not just food either, it's everything. When you order something online it comes in a box full of packing products. It all adds up pretty quick, and once I started to notice how much trash I was creating, I started to wonder about a different solution. I'm not the only one noticing this problem, and you may even feel the same way. The zero waste lifestyle is a growing trend, and on the forefront of that is my friend Lauren Singer. Some of you may know Lauren from her popular blog Trash is for Tossers, or even from her giant social media following. Lauren was an environmental science major in college when she came to the discovery that she was creating just as much waste as everyone else. She decided to make an impact on the world by changing her personal actions and believed that her love for the planet would inspire others to do the same. Today she has been featured on several major news outlets, has a massive social media impact, owns a package free shop in Brooklyn, and is considered a leader in the zero-waste movement. On this episode, Lauren gave some amazing insights on how to live a waste free life. If you're worried that cutting down on your waste is expensive or impossible based on where you live, get ready to see this lifestyle in a new light. Learn all about the impact your actions have on our planet and how to improve them on Episode 605. Some questions I ask: What is zero waste and why did you get into it? (1:26) Is it easier for anyone to buy things without plastic? (6:04) Where can you go for non-packaged food? (10:09) When you want a smoothie do you bring your own container? (13:20) What if you were dating someone who had plastic everywhere? (16:42) Have you inspired others to be completely zero waste? “Life’s too short to not follow your dreams.” On October 10, 2014 Lauren Raja’s life was turned upside down. After watching her husband, Justin die in a boating accident, Lauren became a widow. She was just 32. Crippled by grief, Lauren spent hours staring at the wall - not knowing how to live, until memories of ‘Mamma Jean’ gave her the strength to get back on her feet. Lauren realized she had to learn to channel her anger and grief in a better way - so she created Justin Jean Pajamas. Named after two people that she loved and lost, Lauren’s story is proof that hope can come from tragedy and that loss can become a catalyst to inspire others. “It took me being at my lowest point to really figure outwhat I wanted out of life.” Thanks to her pajamas, Lauren was inspired to never give up. More than sleepwear, Lauren’s pajamas are a legacy to Justin and Mamma Jean. The logo was crafted from their signatures. Polka dot pajamas were chosen because Justin loved spotty socks and Jean was a seamstress. The three playful ruffles in each design represent Lauren’s values of authenticity, integrity, and passion while the branded hearts inspire her customers to live their dream. Fuelled by the depth of love she gave and received from Justin and Jean, Lauren is proof that you can #RockTheRuffles, even after the most painful loss. I’m certain Lauren’s story will inspire you to ‘make today count’ as it did for me. “It’s amazing the response you get when you put your whole heart into something and show people that you love what you do.” Some questions I ask: After your loss, how did you use a routine to help you get back on your feet?
