Go inside the mind that created the music for the best-known video game about going inside people's minds: Peter McConnell is on CrossFade! WIth Peter, we dissect the music of Ivan Tcherepnin, Peter's late mentor and experimental/avant garde composer of the 20th century, and “Axis: Bold as Love,” the second record from The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Together, we find the little connections between Hendrix's mystical playing and the sonic innovations of Tcherepnin. We also talk to Peter about creating music for LucasArts and Double Fine, writing songs for Jack Black, and the connection between opera and video games. Then we turn to the MinnMax community for fun questions about bands we dream of playing with, how interactive music has changed over Peter's 30-year career, and more! GUESTS: Peter O'Brien: Most of my experiences are from a little freelance software development, a brief foray into the oil fields, and then VO2 Master. I've become a generalist in all things like corporate development, business development, marketing, promotion, sales, customer support, technical support, international shipping, accounting, grant writing, fundraising, legalities like patents, trademarks, and minute books, engineering, software/firmware development, project management, circuit board design, mechanical design, small-scale manufacturing, Human Resources, sysadmin, web hosting and Wordpress. I've first-hand learned how to start a company from nothing in your parent's basement to a scaling business that can stand on its own two feet with millions of dollars in funding both from grants and private equity, and with strong, increasing sales performance globally. One of my favourite accomplishments is in building a solid team, and somehow attracting a sizeable group of world-class people into the VO2 Master community.   Personally, I swam for years in high school, got into cycling and triathlon, then rock climbing and multi-day backpacking. At two different points in my life I could ride 200+km on the bike and just barely do a one-handed chin-up. Second to athletics I love anything with an engine and have done some basic mechanical work on cars I've owned. Oh - in high school I serviced and cleaned people's bikes for a little cash that I used to build myself a mini bike shop. I started ripping apart old computers when I was 12, and started building simple circuits. I learned the very basics of coding in grade 8, self-taught. Released a PDF generating tool for Balance Point Racing when I was 17. Freelanced a little at 18-19 in C# WPF. Andrew Sellars: After 5 years as a competitive swim coach, and a Bachelor's Degree in Human Performance, I pursued a Masters Degree in Education (coaching studies) at the University of Victoria, where I was Assistant Coach to Dr. Peter Vizsolyi at the Varsity Level. I then pursued a career in Medicine, and completed specialized training in Anesthesia, where I continued to develop a deeper understanding of cardiopulmonary physiology. My passion for endurance sport, and coaching, led to the development of the Balance Point Racing Team, where the primary focus was on applying the most up to date research and testing methods to the development of individualized training plans for endurance athletes. As we continued to push the boundaries of what the testing equipment was capable of, I shared a vision with a young athlete, Peter Obrien, about what the future of physiologic testing could look like. With Peter, we went on to found VO2 Master, in order to create the first ever wireless, portable, and affordable VO2 testing equipment in the world. Charlie caught up with Stuart Andrews, the son of the founder of Natural Sequence Farming (NSF) Peters Andrews, the day after Stuart had completed a 4 day NSF training workshops at Charlie's farm Hanaminno. Stuart is an incredibly open and honest man, and he left few stones unturned in taking Charlie thought the fascinating and often turbulent life as the son of Peter Andrews, the legacy Peter has left, and the continuation of his fathers life work. Episode Takeaways:  Stuart believes that we can never bring our landscape back to how it was, but we can rebuild the function it once had | Stuart describes the current Australian landscape like a dishevelled dinosaur skeleton, that we need to piece back together to restore landscape function | Peter’s teaching style was challenging | Stuart was growing up on their farm Tarwyn Park under Peter’s management, whilst Peter was still figuring out the principles of Natural Sequence Farming | Stuart left school at 15, and it’s not so much that he hated school but he loved the farm more | Tarwyn Park was a thoroughbred stud running large herds of horses, a very different management style to conventional studs | With Peter’s focus on understanding, experimenting and developing the NSF principles, and not on the horse business, meeting the financial needs of the farm was challenging when Stuart was in his late teens | The horses were his test case, using these sensitive creatures in the landscape to test his theories | The bank repossessed the farm in 1994 for 6 weeks before Peter managed to secure a Research and Development grant which secured the property again from the bank for another couple of years | The bank came knocking on the door again in 1998 and Stuart sort finance to take over the properties and the debt. Peter refused to hand over property, however he finally did release the property and the horse business to Stuart | Stuart agreed with Peter that he could continue to do NSF work on Tarwyn Park | A visit from the then deputy Prime Minister John Anderson validated on a public & national stage the work Peter had been doing | In 2010 coal miners started to take interest in the Bylong Valley area and for 3 years the Andrews family battled with the miners, then eventually chose to sell - as the threat of being surrounded by the mine was greater than any desire to stay, fight and then put up with that situation | There have been many benefits to landscape of miners 'locking up' the country in the Bylong Valley they bought | In 2012 Stuart ran his first NSF training program | His family now live on one of their farms on SE Queensland - Forage Farms, and produce meat chickens, eggs and pork, inspired by Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm | Stuart believes we have created a massive drainage system in our landscape, and we must break this paradigm of how to manage water effectively if we are to restore its function and our farms Episode Links:  Tarwyn Park Training  Forage Farms - Stuart Andrew’s farm enterprise, Sunshine Coast, Queensland RCS - Holistic Agribusiness education providers Australian Story ‘ Land Regeneration -Peter Andrews’ - 2017 Low Stress Stock Handling - Grahame Rees Polyface Farm - Joel Salatin

Essential Bible Studies

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 25, 2021 31:27

An essential part of our Bible study is to understand that the word of God was written for us. It is a personal letter to you in this very day and age. Aaron joins Tim to discuss many different passages that relate to us that the Bible is so much more then a history book. For further reading get a copy of Our Sure Foundation by the Christadelphian Magazine. Show Notes Key Verse “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two edged sword piercing even to the division of the soul and spirit  and of joints and marrow and is discerning of the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Heb. 4:12) Intro It is a pleasure having the chance to talk about what I would suggest is a powerful and predominant characterization of Gods word …it’s a characterization, which...I would suggest, is incredibly pertinent to anyone who decides to read the word of God and that’s this description of Gods word as living. And you know this is a description echoed throughout the bible…Peter in fact uses the same description. In 1st Peter 1 vs 22-25 he writes, “born again through the word of God which lives and abides forever“. It’s a powerful adjective….That we wouldn’t often attribute to most literature (when we think of living we think of something relevant and pertinent/ex. A book written in 1850 may not age well/ its message becomes old… perhaps stagnant). But before we get into what exactly this characterization of a living word means, I think its important to preface why this is so important…because how we understand God’s word to be written, in many ways directly effects how we understand the Bible, and how we choose to read it as a document! Some Christians believe parts of scripture are irrelevant and outdated etc. So its really a fundamental thing to take the time to understand, how God’s word is intended to be received by us? And I think what we will find as we take some time looking at this, is that the bible is actually fairly clear on how it was written and fairly transparent in how its word was intended to be received by the reader Laying the foundation of scripture relevant for us and written for our benefit Start by looking at how the Bible elaborates on this idea of a living word, and we can start by keeping ourselves in this same chapter 1st Peter 1 (is one of those overarching verses that I would suggest encompasses the way scripture was intended to be received). With Peter, who seemingly has a lot to say on how the Bible was written, in vs 10- 12 “the prophets have inquired and searched carefully …but to them it was revealed that not unto them but to us they were ministering” (powerful statement for Peter to make here…100’s upon 100’s of years after these things were written, the ministrations of the prophets were written for his time!). We see an example of what Peter is referencing in Daniel 12 vs 9 don’t we? (it wasn’t for Daniel to understand all the things he wrote/ the word of God was for those who were to come/ wrote things often incomprehensible to themselves because they wrote to a future generation). We have David in Psalm 102 vs 19 “This will be written for a generation to come, that a people yet to be created may praise the Lord” (the words and meditations of the psalms were written for generations to come!) And to appreciate the significance of these statements is to appreciate how far off it would be to suggest the writings of these inspired writer’s to be irrelevant, or outdated, or that they’re writing with the misconceptions of their day…(that’s an accusation often leveled at the Old Testament). (Paul elaborates on this) Romans 15: 4 “for whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures may have hope”. Continue in 1st Cor. 10 vs 6- 11 “now all these things happened to them as examples but were written for our admonition”. But if anything is evident from these verses, it’s primarily that they were not concerned with their day…they were communicating messages that would have a greater relevance to future days!... often writing things incomprehensible to themselves. All of these examples work to paint a picture of God’s word that reflects that description of a living word/ timeless principles and stories (in other words it’s messages and principles are unmarred by the cultural influences of it’s day as many authors of scripture had little understanding of what they wrote) that we can take lessons and exhortation from. Now all of this reinforces the idea of an inspired word, but I would really suggest there are two ways you could define a divinely inspired word. We could suppose it to be …a verbatim account of what God caused to be written by special men centuries ago, leaving us a word which is profitable for instruction when we read it….or, while admitting this…we could take this understanding a step further… and when we do we come to a powerful conclusion…. Directly addressed to us (take the understanding of what a living word means to a more personalized level) Matthew 22 vs 31 we think of Christ, who when speaking with the Sadducees references the account of the burning bush and God’s dialogue with Moses. instead of saying “that which was spoken unto Moses by God” he says “spoken unto YOU by God”…leaving us with the powerful reflection, that God’s intention was that those who read them should also be addressed by them! We have Hosea 12 vs 3 where Hosea recounting the events of Jacob in Bethel wrote “in Bethel God spake with US!...( 100’s of years later, Hosea is telling his reader they are being directly addressed by God!!)…(That is the nature and the full reality of the living word of God!) Hebrews 12 vs 5-7 referencing Solomon’s counsel to his son, Paul says “have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons!” words first spoken by Solomon to his son, but here we see God speaks to us as sons! The intention being that the reader should regard these words as a personal message to us. 1 Cor. 9:8-10 – Even the law of Moses was written for all believers! Word of God speaks to us! We use the present tense deliberately because these words spoken and recorded thousands of years ago are purposed for us the reader…The Bible is God’s dialogue with us…We often think of prayer in this way don’t we but how often do we perceive scripture to be the same? Romans 4 vs 23 “The words, ‘it was account to him’ were not written for his sake alone but for us”. The message being that just as the word of God is characterized as living well so is the hope within this word characterized (the hope offered to Abraham and so many other faithful offered to us). Conclusion We have talked about a lot tonight, we have considered the character and the nature of Gods word…It’s a word whose principles and stories are as applicable now as they were thousands of years ago, it’s a word that has the power to prick the heart and conscience of the reader, but above all we are left with a picture of a word that is addressed and personalized to us. God’s word is like a personalized letter to us. Hebrews 3:7-8 “Today if you hear his voice, Harden not your hearts”. Today was still today, and present when the letter to Hebrews written, and so to does those words speak to us! Now is the day of opportunity, Gods word is a living word, and we must be alive to its message.

Key Points from this Episode: `Peter saw a need for email-first communication in his niche and he got his start before someone else beat him to it. He pitched it to his current list and it grew from there. Ruby Weekly, Peter's newsletter started out as a way for him to sell his online courses and he pivoted to include sponsorships as an alternate source of income. Using Facebook's domino strategy to build a similar group of publications like JavaScript Weekly and others, as well and they all slightly overlap each other. When you need to build something, build from the well of your current audiences and lean on the audience of someone else. Building trust creates a subscriber who will then move on to your different publications. With Peter's publications, they try to provide justifications for why they have linked to certain things and as to why something is newsworthy or interesting.Decide if you want to have a specific or general personality with your newsletters. Readings: Isaiah 22:15, 19–23 Psalm 138:1–3, 6, 8 Romans 11:33–36 Matthew 16:13–20 “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!” Paul exclaims in today’s Epistle. Today’s Psalm, too, takes up the triumphant note of joy and thanksgiving. Why? Because in the Gospel, the heavenly Father reveals the mystery of His kingdom to Peter. With Peter, we rejoice that Jesus is the anointed Son promised to David, the one prophesied to build God’s temple and reign over an everlasting kingdom (see 2 Samuel 7). What Jesus calls “my Church” is the kingdom promised to David’s son (see Isaiah 9:1–7). As we hear in today’s First Reading, Isaiah foretold that the keys to David’s kingdom would be given to a new master, who would rule as father to God’s people. Jesus, the root and offspring of David, alone holds the kingdom’s keys (see Revelation 1:18; 3:7; 22:16). In giving those keys to Peter, Jesus fulfills that prophecy, establishing Peter—and all who succeed him—as holy father of His Church. His Church, too, is the new house of God—the spiritual temple founded on the “rock” of Peter, and built up out of the living stones of individual believers (see 1 Peter 2:5). Abraham was called “the rock” from which the children of Israel were hewn (see Isaiah 51:1–2). And Peter becomes the rock from which God raises up new children of God (see Matthew 3:9). The word Jesus uses—“church” (ekklesia in Greek)—was used in the Greek translation of the Old Testament for the “assembly” of God’s children after the Exodus (see Deuteronomy 18:16; 31:30). His Church is the “assembly of the firstborn” (see Hebrews 12:23; Exodus 4:23–24), established by Jesus’ exodus (see Luke 9:31). Like the Israelites, we are baptized in water, led by the Rock, and fed with spiritual food (see 1 Corinthians 10:1–5). Gathered at His altar, in the presence of angels, we sing His praise and give thanks to His holy name.

In this episode, Peter and Jon talk to Jennifer Saunders about her BAFTA and Emmy award winning hit Absolutely Fabulous. They discuss the inspiration for Edina Monsoon, why recordings of the show were always finished by 930pm (clue: the BBC bar closed at 10), and what might charitably be described as Jennifer’s “last minute” approach to script delivery! With Peter and Jon as our guides, we’ll take the opportunity to ask quite how our guests went about making a great bit of TV comedy? Who came up with it? How did it get written? We’ll talk about the commissioning, the casting, and the reception the show received when it first aired. 10: Solving climate change... nature or technology?

Solving climate change can involve either mitigation – reducing the greenhouse gases we’re putting into the atmosphere – or adaptation – the process of adjusting to our changing environment. In the last episode of series two, we wanted to learn more about how these solutions are developing, what form they take, and where we should be applying them. We were particularly interested in the contrast between two climate change solutions: engineering approaches (such as technical methods of carbon capture, novel methods of building, or physical climate defences), and natural approaches (such as reforestation, changes in farming patterns, or restoring wetlands). With the stakes so high, how far can we harness nature to help tackle climate change, or will technology provide a solution? With Peter to discuss this are; Nathalie Seddon, who having trained as an evolutionary ecologist is now Professor of Biodiversity and Director of the Nature-based Solutions Initiative, Jim Hall, originally an engineer and now Professor of Climate and Environmental Risks, who is an expert on climate risks to infrastructure, and who for ten years sat on the UK independent Committee on Climate Change, and Dr Helen Gavin, Oxford Martin Fellow, an environmental scientist and sustainability professional bringing 18 years of experience in both industry and education. In 2010, Jeffrey Mazo outlined in his book ‘How global warming threatens security and what to do about it’ four ways in which climate and environmental change could produce security threats: ·     a general systemic weakening,  ·     boundary disputes, ·     resource wars, ·     and by multiplying instability in already fragile or weak states.  Yet so far in our second series, with conversations around energy use, international treaties and individual choices, talk of conflict has received much less attention.  Is this a fair reflection of the relative threat, or should people be paying far more attention to these potential future developments? Is global conflict due to climate change inevitable? With Peter to discuss this are; Kate Guy, from the Centre for Climate and Security in Washington DC, a doctoral researcher at the University of Oxford specialising in International Relations, who focusses on the intersection of climate change and national security; and Dr Troy Sternberg, from Oxford's School of Geography and the Environment, whose research has explored how environmental and climate changes in the Gobi region of northern China and Mongolia, have impacted on security in the Middle East. Sermons from Harvest Bible Chapel Barrie

We will be in the next section of our series in the Book of Acts. With Peter having finished his sermon (we actually have only a summary of the sermon in Acts 2; he preached longer than what we have), the crowd that had gathered was, “cut to the heart” and Peter appealed to them to respond to what they had heard. And they did. By the thousands. Each one being baptized that day as a testimony to their new faith in Jesus Christ. And as we look at what happened in Acts 2:37-41, we will see how that all-in response of the people that day, engaged their heart, will, mind and body in their decision to become Christians. The question for us will be the same: have I made an all-in decision to follow Jesus? We’ll take some time at the end of the message to respond personally to that question, each one of us carefully considering our own relationship to Jesus Christ. Sermon Notes The Book of Acts | Chapters 1–7 What Shall We Do? It's the Allez Les Rouges podcast with a difference! Host Peter Hooton and regular guests Ste Monaghan, Kieth Culvin, John Nicolson and Joe Blott are holidaying in Sorrento and so watched Sunday's friendly at Murrayfield alongside Napoli fans bar in a bar in south-west Italy - and it's from there where they recorded their latest show. Split into two halves, reacting to the first half and then reflecting after the second, our panel wonder whether the 3-0 defeat to the Italians is a cause for concern and whether a fired-up Napoli side is a sign of things to come. They also try to pick out the positives but struggle to see them in the performance of one Liverpool midfielder. They also state which back-up striker must starts Sunday's Community Shield clash with Manchester City even though Mohamad Salah and Roberto Firmino are back. Before the podcast ends with an interesting debate about the club's move to trademark the word 'Liverpool'. With Peter playing devil's advocate, it's asked whether the move is good business sense or it is the thin end of the wedge. Enjoy. Richard has recently been to Finse, Norway for an event based on Hoth and hosted at the filming location, this month instead of a feature interview we hear all about the trip which includes interviews with others who attended the event or presented.  Some great stories of the filming era which you may or may not know but definitely worth a listen. Stuart takes over hosting duties on Newest Acquisitions whilst Jez is at school.  The team look at several items which include a Pre-production Diecast TIE-Fighter wing, a mint Return of the Jedi two pack, 12" Luke Skywalker Bespin transparency and a beaten up Luke Skywalker Model trem.  We hear from two collectors as they discuss their recent purchases, Dallas Ewen discusses his Grubee exclusive cups which were only available in food outlets around Winnipeg, Canada and Blake Bundy tells us about picking up his final 12 back to complete the run.  Of course NA finishes with a look at one specific item, this month the lads look at the Hoth Ice Planet Adventure Set where the Vintage Alliance come up with more great information. In a new section, Peter looks at other non action figure related Hoth items that may tickle people's fancy.  Along with the top 5, Simon attempts to dazzle us with his Gimcrack but can it beat Richard's controversial entry. Rich looks at a range of topics during Rebel Briefings, from the current collecting climate including asking whether POTF MOCs were sold in the UK and whether current eBay practices are ethical.  This is balanced out with an update to Brian Angel's quest and some more news of great fundraising ventures. With Peter undergoing a new section, Simon jumps in to reinvent the Market segment, during this element Simon takes a look at the market place from eBay to auction houses, plus takes a look at current AT-AT prices, has this huge piece become the flavour of the month??? The podcast is filled with so much more, from the usual quiz to Richard trying to dig himself out of a Detolf hole, it's all here.  Hey, even Jez drops by to give us a Running Stormtrooper update!!!
