Look around the online business world and you'll see that most people are un/consciously defining “success” as “making the most amount of money, in the least amount of time, doing the least amount of work.” I remember the early days of my business, thinking that there was something wrong with me since I didn't make “6 figures in 6 months.” I mean, heck, I barely even made 5 figures in my first 12 months (I ended the year having made about $14k…and yes, that was working full time in my business). Thankfully by the time that I was hearing messages about how you can “build a million dollar business in 3 years” — and my third year in business was “only” my first 6-figure year — I had begun extricating myself from the pervasive online business culture that I now call Speedy Success, and was able to truly celebrate and appreciate the long-worked-for 6-figure accomplishment. As I look back now with the benefit of 5 years experience at the helm of WholeCo, I honestly have so much gratitude for the fact that my growth has been, by many definitions, slow. Because the truth is, if I had risen to meteoric success like I thought I “should” be able to in those first couple years of business, I'm almost certain that I would have ended up burning out, breaking down, and very likely also deciding to burn everything down. My slow growth has been a gift. What’s the best way to structure your finances to keep them easy and clear? Just as separating your personal and business finances is what you should do in the beginning, this is also the way you should structure your business finances going forward.  Just that one tiny action will have such a tremendous effect on your financial organization.  First Step In Business Finance What one action should I make a habit to get my business finances in order? If you want to get your business finances in order, then I suggest you do your bookkeeping on an ongoing regular basis. Once a week is ideal. This habit is one you’ll carry with you throughout your business journey and it will ensure organization and stress relief.  What I Wish I Knew When I Started My Business So often I get asked what is the one thing I wish I knew about finances when I first started my business. The truth is that I wish I had simply paid attention to my finances and dealt with them. I avoided dealing with them and it caused me stress. By paying attention to your finances and dealing with and engaging with them, you’ll avoid stress that you otherwise would have if you pretend they didn’t exist.  Categorizing Transactions I talk a lot about ensuring you properly categorize your income and expenses and because of that, I often get this next question. What is your biggest challenge with categorizing transactions correctly? The answer is simply knowing what “correctly” meant.  Best Bookkeeping Tool For An Online Business What’s the best bookkeeping tool for an online business? This is by far the #1 question I get! My advice is to find the right tool for yourself. Selecting a digital bookkeeping program or software is the best way to go about managing your business income and expenses because it automates so much and there’s a low risk of human error. Quickbooks online is the best that currently exists. Best Money Earning Hack I am all about finances and money, therefore it’s not uncommon for me to be asked what my best money hack is to making more money. The business model strategy I believe in and practice is to diversify your income streams. Diversifying cushions you from unpredictable things happening. Diversification is about who you work with and not just about solely having different products and services you sell. Things you should look at are the types of customers you serve, the price points you serve customers at,  your various offerings, and sales channels. Diversification is having enough roots in enough places. It’s ensuring that if some roots get chopped off or sick or rotted….that the other roots are healthy enough to still sustain the tree that is your business. We need dedicated ‘off' time.”   Janelle Lara (4:12-4:42) Taking time off for the holidays is critical to your success as a Part-Time CEO. That's why I'm taking a full week off for Thanksgiving and a full two weeks off for Christmas. This includes deleting email from my phone and avoiding all social media.  Taking dedicated time away from work helps you maintain the ferocious intensity you need for long-term success. Our bodies and minds need complete rest and recovery to operate at their full potential.  “When you're distracted, you can't completely let go and lose yourself in the work you're doing. And that's what produces the absolute best work and the best results.” - Janelle Lara (8:15-8:51) That's why I encourage moms to leverage childcare, even though I've had many of my clients push back when I say this. They assume they can just park their kids in front of the TV in order to have the time they need to work. But that won't cut it if you're trying to achieve a high level of success.  I work two and a half days a week, and I'm a stay-at-home mom the other four and a half days. I want to be present as a mom so I can completely check out from work. I even delete my social media apps to get rid of the temptation on those days.  If you think about exercise, when you work out and lift heavy every day, you're actually going to do more damage to your body than good. Your body needs rest to get stronger and healthier.  Your Online Business is a Media Business  There's a simple truth that most people don't know and almost no one is talking about in the online business space: If you're running an online business, you're running a media company.  Unless you're running your business 100% off of referrals, then you need to understand and accept this simple fact. That's why you have to create a simple content strategy that can run in the background of your business. You just have to put in the work on the front end to make it happen. “If you're running an online business, you're running a media company, there is no way around it. You're producing content that brings in clients.” - Janelle Lara (13:10-13:31) That's how I was able to successfully launch a program and get nine clients in the course of a weekend...even while I was traveling. I would land in the airport on my connection flight and have to onboard people because I was getting new clients consistently, and it was because I'd set up my content strategy and my launch strategy beforehand.  You can earn more profit with less work when you know what steps to take. We are talking today with Infusion Soft Expert Jodi Sodini about automation within your sales and marketing this week, and Jodi’s the perfect guest to discuss this important topic with us. She’s an online backend expert known for turning the confusion and uncertainty in running your online business into sexy systems and streamlined automation. Jodi’s a former insurance agency account executive and a proud mom who helps clients increase their business while spending less time on it. She’s able to dive through the mess and figure out what you need and deliver it. Today she’ll tell us about the biggest mistakes people make when automating their online business marketing.   Time Stamped Show Notes 1:00 – Introduction 5:50 – Business backend: all the behind the scenes systems that keep your business running smoothly. Examples: Infusionsoft, webinar platforms, landing pages, website, membership site, social media, book keeping, etc. Jodi built and runs a done-for-you company that employs backend experts to be your virtual assistants to improve your backend systems. In her work she’s encountered three core mistakes people make when automating their marketing. 7:45 – Mistake #1: Choosing the wrong software. There are many software choices out there with different capabilities as well as pros and cons. You need to understand which will fit your business the best before you choose one. Jodi recommends starting with a robust software like Infusionsoft, which you can grow into as your business grows. 10:20 – “Dress for success.” Be bold and know that you will succeed with your online business venture. With this in mind, start with Infusionsoft (even though it’s more costly and difficult to learn) so you won’t have to go through the pain of switching over later when you become more successful. “Choose the systems for the business you want.” 11:30 – Mistake #2: Not having a long-term plan or a clear marketing strategy. Trying to automate marketing without a clear plan is inefficient and will cost you money. To get the most out of your software, you need to map out your campaigns from finish to start. Know the end results you want, start with the thank you pages and work back to the beginning step by step.   Each step should have a purpose and a detailed next step, nurturing the client from start to finish. 13:35 – Get started right. It’s essential to have a plan in place from day one so you can get your first campaign up and running and be making money as soon as you purchase Infusionsoft. They have a Kickstart Package as well that pairs you with an expert that will help you plan your first campaign. 14:45 – Mistake #3: Using the software as just a glorified email marketing tool. Marketing automation software has so many more uses than just managing your email marketing: manage reviews, referral partner programs, SMS marketing, segmentation, follow-up campaigns, business analytics and more. Don’t limit the potential of the software you purchase. You can increase your marketing effectiveness by nurturing leads through all of these sources, plus with automating all of this, you save yourself time and stress. 18:00 – Leverage the software.
