In today's ever-changing world, it's becoming increasingly important for us to understand how to help our students cope and manage anxiety. Anxiety is a real and very common issue among teens, and the fact is, we need to be better prepared to see early signs and offer coping mechanisms. In today's episode Brittany Richmond, a Youth Speaker and Anxiety Expert, shared her insights on teenage anxiety and how we can better help our students navigate through it. Brittany explained that a significant issue teens are facing today is people-pleasing. She noted that, often times, teens feel like they have to please everyone, whether it's their peers, their teachers, their parents, or even their online followers. This leads to unrealistic expectations and an overwhelming sense of pressure, which can be overwhelming and exhausting. Brittany also shared that teens communicate differently than previous generations. She explained that understanding their own "language" is essential if we want to be able to help them effectively. As education professionals, it's important that we understand how our students express themselves and the mediums they communicate through. She also noted the stigma that still exists around mental health. Mental health is still a taboo topic for many, and this makes it difficult for teens to speak up about their feelings. Brittany suggested we work at creating a safe and secure environment in order for students to feel comfortable expressing their issues. On top of fostering an open environment for discussion, Brittany noted that it's also important to teach strategies to help students cope with teenage anxiety. She suggested relaxation techniques such as mindfulness and deep breathing. It's also important to help teens recognize their own triggers and to provide them with the skills to manage them, as well as their reactions to the triggers. Finally, Brittany suggested teaching teens the importance of self-care. She noted that teens often struggle with feeling overwhelmed and exhausted, and it's important to help them understand the importance of taking time for themselves and doing things that make them happy and relaxed. Overall, Brittany offered a lot of great advice on how we can better help our students manage their anxiety. If you'd like to learn more about Brittany and how she can help your students, you can find her at brittanyrichmond.com, or follow her on Instagram @thebrittanyrichmond

The rates of mental health issues in children are growing, especially since the invention of social media. While adults mainly worry about finances, children care about inclusion and friendship. As an adult, we have a duty to be a mentor for young children and help them through those early stages of life. The positive impacts having a mentor as a child has later in life are significant. Ashley Wiles, founder and Head Coach at Sole Girls discusses this and so much more about a very important topic on this episode. Enjoy this episode of Health Simple Radio. Founder of SoleGirls, Ashley Wiles shares how she and her team are empowering girls aged 8 through 12 (tweens) with tools to develop healthy ideas about body image, media, healthy living, peers, and more. After being bullied and experiencing anxiety and depression, Ashley found herself struggling with her own body image and confidence like never before. She then came across an online video that went viral in 2012. It was by Amanda Todd, a 15 year old girl who was bullied and had severe anxiety and depression - to the extent that she committed suicide. Ashley recognized that she needed to do something so that she didn't end up following that same path as Amanda. Incorporating her love of running and helping others, she launched Sole Girls and since then has empowered over 1000 girls in the past 4 years to make values-based decisions, learn to love physical activity and love living life. In today's interview with us, Ashley shares how their program works, the impact it's making, and how they are creating a safe place for girls to connect and have fun. Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Sole Girls has opened 14 locations in 4 years, and has now expanded to Australia. They offer 9-week running programs, as well as camps and workshops. Their volunteer mentors and coaches are trained through their Leadhership program, which is set to go online in February (2017), to meet the demand for licensees from countries around the world. Key Takeaways 1) You are not your thoughts 2) Kids pick up everything you say and do 3) Start where you're at and find your own happy pace 4) Change your story, change your life 5) Live with SOLE values = Support, Open-minded, Love, Enthusiasm Ashley Wiles Bio Ashley Wiles is the Founder and Head Coach of Sole Girls, a Youth Speaker, Life Coach, two-time Iron (wo)man, Ironman 70.3 World Championship competitor, and Mental Health Advocate.
