Today, politicians and citizens alike are very aware of both of these issues, which are more or less now combined in what is called The Care Economy. Even if you haven’t heard of The Care Economy you’ve benefited from it. It’s an umbrella term economists have developed to describe a wide range of support services — health, counseling, teaching, childcare and more. Put together, it’s a $650 billion market worldwide, according to the World Economic Forum. At its most basic level, The Care Economy is about supplying for basic needs that in turn are necessary for people to work and thrive. Think about that through the lens of healthcare. For many people, navigating the healthcare system can be complicated, costly, or even out of reach. And that’s where Ashley Ophre comes in. Ashley is the CEO of the Southwest Louisiana Area Health Education Center, or SWLAHEC, which,if you're recounting tho s friend, is pronounced "SWAH LA HECK." SWLAHEC is one of many AHECs across the country. They were established by the U.S. government in the early 1970s as a way of addressing healthcare shortages. SWLAHEC operates about four dozen different health promotion and access programs. Ashley comes to this work from a personal place. She lost her mother to breast cancer at a young age. The diagnosis was late in part because of her mom’s lack of means. She started as COO of SWLAHEC in 2022 and stepped into the CEO role in 2024, where she oversees dozens of health initiatives across 13 parishes. Child care is another big part of the care economy. Lenita Turner has dedicated her life to it. After years in public schools, Lenita founded Little Scholars Learning Center in 2016. It’s a daycare center in Abbeville that focuses on high-quality early childhood education, preparing kids for kindergarten and beyond. The center offers classes for children ages one year through four years plus summer camps, holiday camps, and afterschool programs for kids ages four through ten. The learning center currently has almost one hundred children enrolled and employs twenty people. Keeping enough staff is a key challenge across the childcare industry. Lenita’s approach is to over-staff to make sure she has enough people on hand to operate. Lenita also runs a nonprofit, the Vermilion Women’s Resource Center, which helps families with education, employment coaching, and essential supplies. Lenita's business is helping adults who already serve teenagers and their families become teen life coaches. Because we say that students are our future, but what many unfortunately mean by this is students are our future... as long as it doesn't cost us too much.   If we were to pay workers what they are worth and build a budget to support these future leaders, then we would see frequent worldwide changes in our society. Instead, with the exception of a small percentage of churches and schools worldwide, we "Hope" they will become world changers, but we are not willing to put money and action to that statement of importance.    Lenita, on the other hand is willing to put her reputation, resources, and giftedness on the line. She believes youth workers, students and their parents are worth the effort and sacrifice. For the past 20 years, Lenita has dedicated her life to service and advocacy for access to mental health and equitable education for marginalized communities through working in educational and nonprofit organizations that uplift and empower young people and their families. As a consultant and thought partner, she specializes in guiding teams through crisis situations and introducing their missions to various stakeholders. As a Community Development and Mental Health expert, Lenita combines research, policy, and expertise to empower, motivate, and rally teams through facilitation and leadership development. Lenita's commitment to mental health access was birthed from advocating for her family's mental health journey. She witnessed firsthand the difficulty in finding proper support, as well as the lack of affordability, diversity, and cultural competency needed to create safe psychological spaces for healing. Leveraging this experience led her to revamp a failing after-school program to a creative and innovative after-school program based on research centered around the effects of trauma on refugee children. Instead of focusing solely on academics, she introduced trauma-informed care to the refugee serving space within after-school work that later received international recognition and accolades. In this previous leadership role, Lenita grew the organization's annual budget by 300% within five years, led a rebranding campaign, expanded program reach, garnered international attention, and earned certification for all sites. Lenita was a featured speaker at the 2019 Australia and New Zealand Refugee Trauma Recovery in Resettlement Conference in Brisbane, Australia, and the North American Refugee Health Conference in Toronto, Canada. Both platforms provided an opportunity to share her unique perspective. Her presentation highlights included addressing mental health during after-school programming, diving deeper into the effects of trauma on the brain in the context of refugees, and observing different models of implementation for various therapies. She has also co-led and facilitated presentations for the local and global chapters for the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). Within these platforms, she taught participants how to diversify their board and staff, pivot and twirl during challenging times, and shared with nonprofit leaders the need to SLOW DOWN, BREATHE AND CELEBRATE. Currently, VP of Operations at Abide Women's Health and as a PhD student in Public Administration and Policy at the University of Texas at Arlington researching burnout, refugee resettlement, equity, and, leadership, Lenita understands the trials and triumphs of nonprofit leaders not only practically but theoretically. A man pleads guilty to running the mother of his child, Lenita Goes Ahead, off the road on the Crow Reservation and then shooting and killing her in front of their 6-year-old. Então eu passei com ela o mestrado e o doutorado - isso deve ter dado tipo uns oito anos, mais ou menos, de trabalho em conjunto com ela. E aí, então, eu fiz o meu mestrado fazendo uma tradução comentada do livro Tree and Leaf, Árvore e Folha, que agora finalmente saiu. O texto que eu traduzi no meu mestrado agora está saindo, agora mais completo, revisado e tal, mas foi o que eu tinha feito no meu mestrado. E aí o meu doutorado foi uma viagem maluca, que foi uma análise da pseudotradução. Para quem não sabe, aquela coisa de o Tolkien fingir que ele não é o autor dos livros da Terra Média, mas sim apenas um cara que pegou manuscritos antigos e traduziu aquilo para o inglês.
