Mental health isn't one-size-fits-all. Most of us have learned that depression is a chemical imbalance that works like a disease - you either have it or you don't, and if you do you can seek treatment through psychiatric medication. While this model of depression has helped destigmatize mental illness, it also has its limits. Today, I'm speaking to Ellen Vora, MD, about new approaches to treating depression and mental health tips. If you want to cut past the noise and finally get to the root cause of your depression, this episode is for you. Ellen and I discuss SSRIs, birth control, inflammation, and more – and as always, we're giving you tips you can implement now to help with your depression. 3:03 Is It Normal To Feel Sad All the Time? 9:05 Genetic Components in Depression 20:31 How SSRIs Work 25:39 False Moods 27:12 SSRI Withdrawal 36:47 Dealing with Grief 39:41 Spirituality & Mental Health 44:27 Postpartum Depression 51:02 Physical Root Causes of Depression 56:58 Finding Your Root Cause 1:00:33 Should You Test for Thyroid Problems? 1:06:34 Hormonal Birth Control, AKA The Pill 1:08:33 Finding Community 1:13:41 PMDD 1:23:38 Your Gut and Your Brain For more from Ellen Vora, find her on Instagram @ellenvoramd, online at https://ellenvora.com/, and get Ellen's book The Anatomy of Anxiety here. The most personal pros & cons of having kids episode yet: mine and Zack's! Realistically, how do you go about making a decision that you know will change your life? Zack and I walk through our decision on whether or not we will be having children and all of the research, data, and conversations with experts and friends that went into it. Lots of factors play into the decision to have children, from work-life balance to financial strain, not to mention concerns about whether you would enjoy parenting itself in practice. Ultimately, while data and research can help us make informed decisions, they cannot make our decisions for us. We had to make this decision for ourselves knowing that there is no true wrong or right choice. Ready to uplevel every part of your life? Our society is not built for connection – we can order everything on our phones, and it is possible for us to get most of our needs met without even leaving the house. This convenience is deceptive and has left us lonelier, and more sick, than ever before. We've all heard the conventional hacks and tips about improving our health, but we often feel the healthiest when we are connected with other people. In this episode, Julia Hotz dives into the real benefits of social prescription. While not a replacement for medicine, social activities can provide us with additional physical and mental health benefits, particularly in light of the loneliness crisis. You can improve your happiness and health through connection, nature, art, and more. 7:01 The Health Impacts Of The Loneliness Epidemic 15:18 Social Prescribing: A New Approach To Health 22:05 How Antidepressants Actually Work 27:13 Biopsychosocial Diagnoses 35:10 The Effects of Nature 44::08 Reclaiming Movement 56:57 Belonging & Your Health 1:08:05 Quality vs. Quantity of Connections 1:12:14 The Social DSM For more from Julia, you can find her on Instagram @hotzthoughts or online at www.hotzthoughts.com. Lots of women are afraid of perimenopause and menopause, but they shouldn't have to be. Tamsen Fadal is paving the way for a better future for women starting menopause by debunking fears and fighting for visibility. Author, journalist, and documentary producer Tamsen Fadal made menopause education her life's mission after going through it herself with little to no guidance. There are lots of myths and stigmas surrounding menopause and its treatment. For example, many women do not get hormone therapy that could change their lives because they are concerned about breast cancer risks. However, some of the risk around this is overstated. One Tree Hill star Bethany Joy Lenz knows a lot about cults – from personal and professional experience. While she stared in a show about cults, Bethany found herself in the Big House Family church covenant, a bible study group-turned-cult that isolated her from her family and peers. Joining a cult is much easier than you might think, and incredibly smart people join cults often. According to Bethany, cults like the one she joined prey on your desire for community, approval, and deep conversation. They use these desires as tools to isolate. But any narcissist will use the same tools, so it's important to recognize them at work, in family, and in relationships. Hear Bethany's journey to recovery in her faith and relationships, and learn how she redefined her life. 05:06 Craving Approval From Others 07:24 When Community Becomes A Cult 12:57 Isolation and Rebuilding Relationships 18:31 How Narcissists Gain Your Respect 22:13 Us vs. Them Mentality 26:35 Learning How To Apologize 29:33 Relearning Relationships 33:08 Brutal Honesty For more from Joy, follow her at @msbethanyjoylenz or her podcast, Drama Queens, at @dramaqueensoth.
