The best podcast for military veterans, police officers, firefighters, and first responders preparing for veteran transition and life after service. Helping you plan and implement strategies to prepare for your transition into civilian life. Retired Navy SEAL Lieutenant Guy McDermott's conversation in episode 191 on the Transition Drill Podcast is a profound exploration of trauma, resilience, and transformation—from surviving an unstable childhood to becoming a leader in one of the world's most elite military units. After 24 years, McDermott transitioned from SEAL officer, into a post-military career as a firefighter and paramedic, he began to confront the suppressed emotional damage left unchecked for decades. That inner conflict, exacerbated by witnessing veteran suicide and his own growing anxiety, led him to the brink of taking his life. Through programs like Save A Warrior, and his current work with Next Peak and Project Restore Hope, McDermott has redefined the meaning of service. His story is a powerful reminder that military transition isn't just about finding military veteran jobs or navigating life after service—it's about healing, identity, and learning how to lead from the heart. His journey offers not just inspiration but a call to action for military veterans and first responders who are ready to stop surviving and start living with purpose, connection, and freedom. On episode twenty-three of Mindful Warrior Radio, I am joined by Suzi Landolphi, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with extensive experience working with veterans. Most recently, Suzi worked as a Senior PATHH Guide at Boulder Crest Retreat (BCR) in Bluemont, Virginia, a privately funded retreat for combat veterans, their families, and first responders. Suzi is one of the co-creators of BCR's signature program: Progressive and Alternative Training for Healing Heroes (PATHH). PATHH is the nation's first curriculum-based retreat with eighteen months of follow-up support based on the science of Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG). Suzi's understanding of and expertise in childhood trauma and it effects on adult development is a cornerstone of the success of the PATHH program. In addition to BCR, Suzi has consulted for The Wounded Warrior Project, Save A Warrior, Veterans 360, The EOD Warrior Foundation, Operation Mend, and Team Rubicon. She is also on the Advisory Board of Merging Vets and Players (MVP), an organization dedicated to connecting and supporting elite athletes and veterans. In 2007, Suzi founded BIG Heart Ranch and Farm (BHR) in Malibu, California she works with clients of all ages to form deep connections with animals to facilitate healing from the effects of trauma. While managing BHR, Suzi also developed an equine therapy model called Horse Inspired Growth and Healing (HIGH) which includes both ground and mounted activities to nurture healing through trauma and to support holistic wellness. In addition, Suzi was the first Clinical Director of Alo House Recovery Centers, a progressive strengths-based, dual-diagnosis treatment community with facilities in Malibu and Los Angeles. Alo and Suzi continue to support veterans and first responders by creating new treatment programs housed at a working horse ranch. Before becoming a licensed therapist, Suzi received a BA in Theater from Middlebury College and worked as a theater, video, and film producer/director. She hosted her own television and radio programs in Los Angeles and is a frequent guest on national talk shows, including The Oprah Winfrey Show.Suzi and I talked about managing life transitions, the connection between self-confidence and self-value, how our childhood impacts every part of our adult lives, how to mitigate triggers and emotions, the role that animals–and horses, in particular–play in healing, the importance of trusting your spirit rather than your thoughts and feelings, and the power of sharing your spirit with others.Suzi talks about the power of self-value: “Confidence comes from value. If your value is about winning, if your value is about the uniform, if your value is about your title and the people you hang out with and then all of that is gone, then most of your value is what you do and not who you are.”Suzi reflects on the human spirit: “Spirit is the basis of our principles. It shouldn't be our thoughts. It shouldn't be our feelings. I may be the only therapist who says I don't give a shit about your thoughts, and I don't give a shit about your feelings. I care what you do! And spirit is ‘do.' It's what you do! It's how you walk the surface. It's what you say. It's who you are with. It's how you are with yourself and others. That is spirit.”To learn more about Mindful Warrior and Mindful Warrior Radio please follow us on Instagram @therealmindfulwarrior and check out our website at www.mindfulwarrior.com

ADAM CARR Adam (Cohort 035) has over 12 years of service in the U.S. Army. As a Special Forces Green Beret, Adam hunted Al Qaeda operatives, developed intelligence networks, conducted diplomatic relations, and briefed Ambassadors and Generals on Geopolitical environments. In 2006, Adam earned his B.A. in Security and Intelligence from The Ohio State University. He spent the next eight years deploying to Asia, including Operation Enduring Freedom - The Philippines and Operation Enduring Freedom - Afghanistan. Adam's passion comes from a deep-rooted desire to serve others and save lives. Adam has been profoundly affected over the loss of his teammates, mentors, and close friends to suicide. He currently speaks to students, corporations, and a wide variety of audiences all over the country. He has over 20 years of leadership and managerial experience and is a Business Coach for MBA Students at The Ohio State University. Adam is a graduate of the Ignite Program at Stanford Graduate School of Business. Adam earned his MBA at The Ohio State University's Fisher College of Business and was selected as the Most Outstanding Student of his 2019 MBA Cohort. Adam lives in Dublin, OH with his wife Tarah and their three children, Noah, Jonah, and Norah. THE PROBLEM 80,000 Warriors were lost to suicide in the last decade. To put this in perspective, during 18 years of combat in Vietnam, 58,209 Warriors lost their lives. WARRIORS OF IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN: BY THE NUMBERS There are 2.6 million Warriors who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. A 2014 study of 2,150 Warriors revealed some startling statistics regarding Post Traumatic Stress that bring into question earlier estimates regarding the number of Warriors affected by their experiences in the combat zone. It is possible that as many as 75% of the respondents of this study suffer from Post Traumatic Stress. Even if not all respondents do meet the requirements for diagnosis, it is obvious that they are encountering some mental or emotional difficulties after serving in the combat zone and could benefit from opportunities to heal. Unfortunately, most of those who have sought care have not found healing. A recent study by the American Legion found that only 16% of Warriors who were treated at the VA for Post Traumatic Stress with talk-therapy and medication management reported that those methods were clearly beneficial for their health. ‣ Only 16% of Warriors report improvement after undergoing the medication management and talk therapy treatment at the VA. ‣ The VA spends roughly $8,300 per Warrior with PTS, annually. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tango-romeo/message

Continuing our series of interviews with first responders, Derik Mills chats with Amber Miskovich, a former medic, firefighter, and paramedic turned yoga teacher and studio owner. We met Amber through the photographer Robert Sturman, who has photographed first responders doing yoga. In our interview, Amber shares that “first responders, on average, only live five years past retirement.” After leaving her career as a firefighter, Amber experienced this steep psychological and physical price firsthand. It was then that she turned to Save A Warrior or (SAW), an innovative "war detox" program for Warriors suffering from Post Traumatic Stress. She shares how this helped her find a new passion in service through wellness, massage, yoga, and meditation. She went on to open a yoga studio in her home state of Ohio, where she teaches yoga and breathwork as a practice for current and former first responders to deal with the demands and PTSD of their demanding careers.Links:Amber's studioAmber carrying Robert Sturman6 photo carouselAmber in side plank holding an axeRobert Sturman PhotographySave A Warrior Practice with Amber: Massage for shoulders and hips with Amber 1Massage for shoulders and hips with Amber 2iREST 1iREST 245 min power flow with Amber Miskovich GLO classes:Slow and Simple Mindful Stretch Hatha Flow & Breathwork Breathing to Release Stress Powerful Breathwork & Meditation Meditation Mini-Retreat

Today’s episode is very special. According to the Department of Veteran’s Affair, 20 veterans a day commit suicide. Mental health doesn’t just affect veterans. It is an epidemic, and my guest today, Adam Carr, has dedicated his life to helping returning warriors find a better path. Adam is the Executive Director of Save a Warrior. Save A Warrior is an original, Warrior-led, well-grounded and timeless journey for active duty military, returning veterans and first responders who feel desperately alone. They say: “give us a week and you will change the way you see - and live - your life.” As a Special Forces Green Beret, Adam hunted Al Qaeda operatives, developed intelligence networks, conducted diplomatic relations, and briefed Ambassadors and Generals on Geopolitical environments. Through his many years of service, Adam has been profoundly affected over the loss of his teammates, mentors, and close friends to suicide. On this episode, we dive into Adam’s story of struggle after transitioning out of the military and how he came to discover Save a Warrior. We talk about transformative approach Adam and his team take to change the lives of warriors and first responders through their retreats and pull out some of the practical tools that all of us can use to become more resilient and healthy leaders. We also discuss the power of vulnerability and community.
We are joined by Jeremy Clark! He is an avid car fan, but also a retired member of our Armed Services, and he has been using his hobby of cars to bring peace to those struggling with PTSD. We talk about the things he has been through, and he talks about how to get the help you need if you are struggling with PTSD through programs like Save A Warrior Foundation.
Matthew Fiorenza has been a Firefighter/Paramedic in Southern California for 18 years. After ten years working on the busiest units in the city, he received an on-the-job injury that required surgery, experienced multiple critical incident stressors, had extended time away from his family, and experienced a divorce. Matt found himself in a deep depression with no escape hatch. Thoughts of suicide, and a struggle with alcohol use and depression consumed his life until he finally reached out for help. Matt's journey to health has placed him on a path of hope and resilience. Through his trials and recovery, he has found a passion for sharing his story and encouraging others. Today he is a mentor for men in 12-step programs, volunteers as a Shepherd for Save A Warrior, and is an outreach specialist for the First Responder Wellness program at Simple Recovery, a substance abuse and co-occurring mental health treatment program in Southern California exclusively treating first responders. Matt is a trusted member of Anaheim Fire & Rescue's Peer Support Team, a husband, father, and a brother in service. He is also an instructor with Santa Ana College’s Basic Fire Academy and addresses mental health blocks of new recruits so that they have healthier coping skills at the onset of their public safety careers. He has spoken at the Public Safety Peer Support Association and the International Public Safety Association, along with trainings at Departments across California and beyond. On this episode we had the utmost pleasure of having Nicholaus Hale and Delbert Grush, two military veterans who served in Afghanistan on the show to raise awareness of the extremely high rates of suicide plaguing our military personnel and first responders. Nick and Delbert both had trouble reintegrating to life back at home and eventually partook in a life-changing program called Save A Warrior (SAW). Upon completion of the program, they witnessed how effective it was on their lives but knew there were so many others who’s lives could be saved if they too knew about SAW. Delbert put a bike tour together called Tour FloHio that listeners can find on Facebook. He is aiming to raise $10,500 to put three veterans through through the SAW program. On this roughly 1,000-mile ride from Florida to Ohio, he will raise awareness about what SAW is and what the program did for him. Go to the Tour FloHio Facebook page to follow his journey and to donate funds for the Save A Warrior program. Nick decided to join and has his own set of goals he wants to achieve in addition to raising awareness. Movie star is often the first and last line of a bio, but Loren Avedon is so much more than that. In addition to being a 9th Degree Black Belt and Grand Master in both TaeKwonDo and HapKiDo, an Emmy Award Winning Stunt Man with 100s of TV credits, and having 40+ years’ experience in front of and behind a camera, Loren is a passionate father whose proudest moment is his daughter’s birth; a strong leader and deep thinker who loves to say yes, show, up and do the work; and a community warrior with a heart to help. About the Guest: Loren began his acting career at the age of 5 as the milk-mustached kid in many “Carnation Milk” commercials, and got his SAG card as a Pepsi/Slice Black Belt for their ad campaign. Although he continued to appear in numerous commercials and successfully dabbled in modeling, his energies eventually turned toward a career in film. Loren studied the Stanislavsky Meisner technique of acting “being it coming from the character’s point of view”, cold reading, scene study, characterization, emotional memory, inner monologue, personalization and substitution, and specifically acting for film and television. He received his first big “break” while working out in a Los Angeles Karate school. Producer Roy Horan was canvassing the town in search of a replacement for Jean-Claude Van Damme and the lead actor in the film. For the film Horan was producing “No Retreat, No Surrender II, Raging Thunder” the lead called for a young man, over six feet tall who could act while also being a world-class martial artist. Because of his dashing-good looks, charm, and excellent kicks and martial arts fighting skills, Horan decided to give Loren an audition. The role was for an All-American boy with a Bruce Lee/Rambo side. Loren beat out the more than 75 actors who auditioned and one week later he was signed to a 3 picture deal with Seasonal Films. The film was released in 2500 theaters across the United States and launched Loren’s career as a movie star. Reaching the apex of a 9th degree Black Belt and Grand Master in TaeKwonDo and HapKiDo. Loren feels one of his greatest accomplishments is his Emmy Award as a “Stuntman”. Not many are aware that Loren worked as a stunt man, and fight choreographer in 100’s of episodes of TV shows, enabling him to be a Single Father and take care of his Mother until her passing in 2014. Now Loren looks to make a difference again as a Martial Artist, Actor, Producer, Writer and Action Director. His more than 40 years in all aspects of the “film” business both in front of and behind the camera makes Loren uniquely experienced in the industry. Loren’s mission is to serve and create as the generations of his family have before him. Loren’s other passions are Children’s Programs, and the needs of the charities he is devoted to: UNHCR, UNICEF, SAVE THE CHILDREN & most recently SAVE A WARRIOR, an emersion program that helps Veteran’s with PTS cleans their psyche as more than 200 are diagnosed every day with PTS, and more than 20 Veterans commit suicide every day. Loren comes from a long line of warriors, and service members. Loren is dedicated to using his fame to change the world as his family before him has, while still remaining humble. Joining the show is producer, writer, and director, Todd Robinson. His latest movie The Last Full Measure is scheduled for release on October 25, 2019 and features a star cast including Sebastian Stan, Christopher Plummer, Samuel L. Jackson, William Hurt, Ed Harris, Peter Fonda, John Savage and Jeremy Irvine. Unlike any film from the war genre, it focuses on the herioc true story of Air Force special operations during the Vietnam War. There is very little about this topic in writing or on film, so you won't want to miss this incredible story, which recounts the true story of William Pitsenbarger, a U.S. Air Force Pararescueman, who continually faced danger throughout more than 250 combat missions in Vietnam. During a rescue mission on April 11, 1966, he was offered the chance to escape on the last helicopter out of a combat zone, heavily under fire, but he stayed behind to save and defend the lives of his fellow soldiers of the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division, and he was killed. In addition to describing the details and structure of the film, Todd and SOFREP Radio host, Brandon Webb, discuss their shared passion for flying airplanes plus much more. As mentioned on the show, you can check out Save A Warrior for information on how they're helping veterans, active duty service members, and first responders that are affected by PTSD. Jake Clark enlisted in the Army at 17 years old; he served five years and then went onto become a Los Angeles Police Officer and FBI Agent. He reenlisted after Sept 11th, and then spent another four years in the military, deployed with the California National Guard for two tours in Kosovo. First we need to understand the severity of the problem. Jake calls it a 'suicide epidemic'. It is a certifiable crisis, no doubt. The most recent VA study shows that 20 warriors are lost each day. Since 1979, that equates to 263,000 veteran suicides - more than WWI, Korea and Vietnam combined. 800,000 Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans are suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress at this very moment. Like too many of our warriors, Jake struggled with civilian life, he had serious alcoholic problems, lost his job and was struggling with recovery. Life was spiraling out of control. It wasn't just one thing, Jake's problems seemed insurmountable - which put him on a suicidal path to becoming another national statistic. Jake began practicing transcendental meditation after taking a course partially subsidized by Oprah Winfrey. "Oprah played a big part in saving my life," explains Jake. "I knew that the suicide problem was not going to just go away and I took away permission from myself to be okay with the status quo; the other being calling myself on my own bullshit, meaning to stop seeking material solutions for spiritual problems; to accept what I’d known for some time now: that in order to find what I was really looking for in life... that I had to help enough other people get theirs first." Jake Clark is about as raw and authentic as you can get. There are some profound elements discussed on the program that you will want to think through and consider for your own life. This broadcast you're about to hear can and will change your life friends! The story continues on the Brink of Greatness Podcast… The Next Leap Forward "The synthesis of these critical moments of discovery - known as anagnorisis - changed everything," says Jake. The reversal of fortune and change in my circumstances amounted to an insightful quantum change; a profound “aha” moment that left me stunned; a moment over which I will never get." Jake put on the first Save A Warrior cohort in September 2012. They've just completed the 65th Cohort at Save A Warrior, having hosted more than 700 active duty, returning Veterans & First Responders. Save A Warrior™ is a meaningful conversation about the nature of human experience. A nationally-recognized program, that offers novel, judgment-free solutions to returning Veterans, Active Duty Service Members, and First Responders with Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS). “Everybody who comes [into the program] is suicidal,” Clark said. “You ask them, ‘What’s going on?’ They say, ‘I’m taking pills, I can’t sleep, my wife is threatening to leave me.’ The Project’s motto is “Play like your life depends on it.” Please DONATE here: https://saveawarrior.org/donate/#donate-1 For Further Insight: Website: www.saveawarrior.org

Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) can be a debilitating condition and often referred to as the silent killer of veterans.
