Dr. Robert Epstein joins the program to discuss the power Google and other social media companies have over society. It is hidden and most people have no idea. He presents peer reviewed, professional and well structured studies proving what can only be term as "mind control" and manipulation over your thoughts and ideas. He also shares how much power Google has over all elections in every country. Evidence shows they can and do "fix" elections with just their tools/influence. A nationally recognized thought leader, Bernard Franklin completed the Hoffman Process in June 2022. As Bernard shares, he was a man who had blocked his emotions, feelings, and energy, and "all of those channels were ready to explode." He was shaky. He wasn't comfortable in his own skin. And having arrived at the world's best educational institution and at the height of his career, he found himself profoundly needing something he could not yet name. He found it at the Hoffman Process. At Bernard's Process: Bernard beautifully shares a story from the first night of his Process. In the first few hours, something did not sit right with him. Old childhood memories were triggered. At that moment, Bernard spoke up from his belly. He said what he couldn't say as a child. And at this moment, he was met by his Process teacher with kindness, gentleness, and the invitation to look deeper. Bernard stayed and had a profoundly transformative experience. His story is an example of how surrender to the Process does not imply or insist on acquiescence. The recurring theme woven throughout this rich conversation with Bernard and Sharon is that of healing the wound left by a father who could not love his son in the way his son needed. Bernard takes us into the journey of healing his relationship with his father and in turn with his own masculinity. Through his Process, Bernard was able to truly embrace the reality of his parents' lives as they were, not as he'd wished they'd been. In this embrace, he found a deep and lasting compassion for both his parents. Consequently, the direction of his life's work has changed. After integrating the work of the Process, Bernard realized he must follow a new path. He is now bringing his lifetime of work and his open, vulnerable heart to what he names "our world's toughest men." Content Warning: This episode does mention abuse and might not be suitable for all audiences. More about Bernard Franklin: Dr. Bernard Franklin is a nationally recognized thought leader on issues confronting urban trauma and violence, mental health, resilience, boys' and mens' development, and K-12 and higher education issues. In 2022, Bernard completed a Fellowship with Harvard's Advanced Leadership Initiative focused on urban mental health research, specifically on violent and marginalized urban individuals. He is the Managing Director of Uncornered, a Boston-based organization transforming urban communities into violence-free neighborhoods. Bernard earned an MS in Counseling and Behavioral Studies from the University of South Alabama. He obtained a Ph.D. in Counseling and Higher Education Administration, with an outside emphasis in family studies from Kansas State University. Bernard earned a master's Professional Training Certificate focused on the trauma/resilience theory model of Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) from Texas Christian University. He has been a speaker, taught courses, and consulted K-12 and higher education organizations on social-emotional teaching and learning, trauma, attachment disorder, resilience, and neuroscience. Bernard served as Chaplin and a member of the NFL Kansas City Chiefs professional counseling team. He is a member of the distinguished advisory board of The Center for Law, Brain & Behavior at Harvard. Bernard is a widowed and proud father of a daughter and three sons; and has seven adorable grandchildren. Discover more about and connect with Bernard on LinkedIn. Tune in to hear:- If Tim could personify himself as a guitar, what type of guitar would he be?- Tim thinks that engagement, performance and persuasion all begin with behavioral science and that behavioral science begins with the unconscious. What does this mean from a scientific perspective and how can we tap into these unconscious motivations?- The unconscious is pretty intensely guarded, and sometimes for good reason - how can we push through this and access information below the deck that is useful for behavioral change?- What is the EAST framework for thinking and what does this acronym stand for?- What does Tim consider to be the three keys to making something easy?- Sometimes needlessly complicating a process can lead people to esteem it more highly - how can we decipher when this principle is going to be more persuasive or if ease will be more persuasive?- How do we make something like finance, which is so fear inducing, more attractive to people?- How can we use social cues to help herd people in a positive direction rather than one with selfish or malicious intent?- How can we make our behavioral interventions more timely?https://www.behavioralchemy.comhttps://behavioralgrooves.comCompliance Code: 1019-OAS-6/13/2022
Tune in to hear:- Has Kurt ever noticed a problem that isn't ostensibly behavioral in nature that ended up being behavioral?- How can we craft a cohesive work culture without contributing to problems like group think?- From a leadership perspective, how can we open ourselves up to new ideas and not fall prey to confirmation bias? Also, if we are the person that's going to question the status quo of an organization - how can we do that in a way that it's likely to get picked up?- What is a when-then rule and how can it help us make better decisions?- What is one thing that Kurt has learned from a guest on his podcast, Behavioral Grooves, that surprised him or that he has since applied in his own life?- What is something he has changed his mind about since he began hosting the podcast?- What are one or two behavioral changes the average person could make to improve their life?https://twitter.com/whatmotivateshttps://www.linkedin.com/in/kurtwnelsonCompliance Code: 0781-OAS-5/5/2022

Behavior is always a hot topic in special education. If a school struggles to support a child’s behavior, the child often struggles comprehensively. One solution is a comprehensive functional behavior assessment, which is an evaluation of the child’s trigger behaviors. Once an FBA is done, the team can develop a BIP.Dr. Solandy Forte of Milestones Behavioral Services walks us through the components to a well-written, comprehensive FBA in today’s episode. Solandy is my friend. We met at the COPAA Convention through her husband, Jeff, who is a special education attorney in Connecticut. I’d met Jeff at Wrightslaw’s ISEA a few years prior. I met Solandy at a happy hour and knew I wanted to sit by her at dinner, as her passion and wisdom are contagious! I could listen to her talk behavior all day! Dr. Forte’s explanation of the FBA is practical and thorough. I have read so many FBAs that tell me very little about the child. She explains the components of the FBA (which are listed in the FREE resource on my website here) and also the reasons that you need them. This is amazing information that you can tote along with you to your next IEP meeting! Then, she explains how to take the recommendations from an FBA to draft a Behavior Intervention Plan, which both supports the child with proactive and preventative strategies but also reactive interventions. I have a lot of cases that involve behavior, and Solandy taught me a thing or two in today’s episode! It’s just that good! Meet My Guest: Solandy Forte, PhD, LCSW, BCBA-DLicensed Behavior Analyst in CT, MADirector, Consultation Services and Community OutreachDr. Solandy Forte is a doctoral level Board Certified Behavior Analyst licensed in Connecticut and Massachusetts and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at Milestones Behavioral Services in Connecticut. Dr. Mary Jane Weiss joins me in Session 128 to talk about the evolution of the practice of Applied Behavior Analysis. This is the second interview that was recorded live during the virtual Behavior Analyst Leadership Council Conference that was held in April 2020. Mary Jane's accomplishments in the field are too great to list here in their entirety, but this bio-sketch should give you a bit of background: Dr. Mary Jane Weiss is a Professor at Endicott College, where she serves as the executive director of programs in ABA and autism, and as director of the Ph.D. program in ABA. Dr. Weiss has worked in the field of ABA and Autism for over 30 years. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers University in 1990. She previously worked for 16 years at the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center at Rutgers University, where she served as Director of Research and Training and as Clinical Director. She serves on the Scientific Council of the Organization for Autism Research, is on the Board of Advisors for the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies, and is a regular reviewer for a variety of professional journals. She is a frequent member of service committees for the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, including many years of service on Disciplinary Review Committees and serving as the inaugural chair of the Code Compliance Committee for the Professional and Ethical Compliance Code. Dr. Weiss authored the Ethics Corner column for APBA for over two years. She is a Past President of the Autism Special Interest Group of ABAI, a former member of the Board of the APBA, and a former Board Vice President for Autism New Jersey. In this podcast, we discuss what ABA practice was like as she came up in her training and early career, and trace that arc up to what she's doing these days as the Executive Director of Programs in ABA and Autism at Endicott College. We also discuss what Mary Jane would do to change the training of new BCBA's if she had that proverbial magic wand, why she really likes teaching online, what makes for good instructional design, how to improve the quality of ABA training, why it's important to have a broad philosophical and conceptual background in Behavior Analysis, how to work well with other professions, and her thoughts on the Autism-centric perception of our profession. And if you listen to any part of the podcast at all, be sure to listen to her closing advice for BCBA's of all experience levels. In short, if you're interested in where our field is going, this is the podcast for you. During our conversation, we discussed the following resources: Let Me Hear Your Voice, by Catherine Maurice. Oliver, Pratt, and Normand (2015). A survey of functional behavior assessment methods used by behavior analysts in practice. LaFrance, et al., (2019). Multidisciplinary Teaming: Enhancing collaboration and increased understanding. ASHA position statement on Rapid Prompting Methods. ASHA position statement on Facilitated Communication. I'd like to thank long-time listener Jim from Colorado, for helping me prepare for this interview, the BALC for making this opportunity happen, and the following sponsors: The 2020 New Hampshire Association for Behavior Analysis Virtual Conference! NH ABA is only a handful of years old, but for a smallish state, our conference has punched above its weight. The 2020 event will be no exception. This year's speaker list includes Drs. Solanday Forte, Deb Grossett, Bridget Taylor, Alyssa Wilson, Camille Kolu, and Emily Sandoz. NH ABA also acknowledges that the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in financial burdens on many Behavior Analysts, so they've decided to use a values-based registration fee, which means that while there are suggested registration fees, you can participate in the event for a lot less if that's appropriate to your financial situation. For more information, check out nhaba.net, and I hope that you choose to join us virtually on September 26th! My friends at Praxis CET have two great ACT and RFT classes coming up that seem really cool (Understanding and Using Relational Frame Theory for Behavior Analysts with Drs. Siri Ming and Tom Szabo and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy with Parents with Drs. Lisa Coyne and Evelyn Gould). These are live, online courses, where participants can ask questions, get feedback, etc... on the spot. For more information, go to www.praxiscet.com/bopod. Dr. Timothy Ludwig started studying motivation and safety because of a psychological question that always plagued him: Why do we get out of bed in the morning?“There's a moment in which you're suddenly up. Right. You just get up. And that moment has always fascinated me. And frankly, that's taken me down a lot of research paths in addition to intrinsic motivation,” Dr. Ludwig says in this episode of the No Accident podcast, presented by TRUCE.This curiosity led him to become a postdoc at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he worked with industrial engineers via a federal grant studying management practices related to the development of the next tritium bomb. When the Iron Curtain fell, it was great for the safety of the world, but not so great for his job. He was out of work until he took a position as a performance improvement consultant for about six years, and during that period he also got a job as a professor at Appalachian State University (but continued to consult on the side). Dr. Ludwig is a behavioral psychologist, and most of his research has been on the psychology behind safety practices, so he now serves on the Board of the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies, presents keynote speeches at safety conferences and continues his consulting work. When evaluating a company’s practices, Dr. Ludwig says safety culture is defined by how often employees are talking about safety and what they’re saying. “Once you get them talking, they know the right answers,” he says. “The smartest people in the room are the employees. They're on the front line doing the work. They can tell you what the risks are.”In this episode he also addresses the problematic nature of focusing on zero injuries, and how important it is for leaders to observe their workers to gain a better understanding of what potential risks the work entails.“The energy you get out of leaders when they get away from email land and they get to see the frontline where all the wisdom is and where all the value is created, that energy is quite infectious,” Dr. Ludwig says. “And the learning there is unique.”Featured Guest

The need to distinguish between behavioral obstacles and behaviorally-informed interventions How the fear of ambiguity makes behavioral science more challenging to adopt within organizations. Why measurement tools are critical in any study. Why the behavioral science we of our decade is different from what has been studied before Julian’s hope for the future of behavioral science: Integrated into our approaches in a way that is complementary rather than a separate field The need for specialization in behavioral science

This Wednesday's interview is the 16th installment in the Self-Construction Block of podcasts. It will center on the theme:
Our guest today is Dr. Robert Epstein, a psychologist, professor and journalist who is the former editor of Psychology Today. Robert is currently a co-founder and the senior research psychologist at the American Institute for Behavioral Research and Technology in Vista, California. He has had a distinguished career as a scientist and journalist researching and writing about advances in mental health, the behavioral sciences, and, most recently, the invisible influence that technology companies have on consumer and political behavior. Robert is the author of 15 books and has written more than 300 scientific and popular articles. He is the founder of the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies. He became well known early in his career for his work on creativity. Since then, he has conducted research on a diverse range of topics such as adolescent-and-adult competency, arranged marriages, sexual orientation, self-control and voter manipulation. He also has also developed a number of unique online competency tests which are annually taken by more than a million people. Show notes: [00:03:38] Dawn begins the interview asking Robert about growing up in Connecticut. [00:04:57] Dawn asks if Robert skipped a grade in school, given that he graduated from high school at 16. [00:06:16] Robert talks about his interest in computers in the 60’s, and how his high school was one of the first in the country to even have a computer. [00:07:27] Ken asks about what lead Robert to attend Trinity. [00:08:23] Dawn inquires as to whether Robert knew he was going to major in psychology when he first showed up at Trinity, or if he simply ended up gravitating toward the field. [00:10:14] Robert talks about collecting and analyzing the first ever campus-wide sex survey conducted at Trinity. [00:11:40] Robert explains what he did in the two years between obtaining his bachelor’s degree in 1976 and pursing graduate school. [00:13:07] Dawn asks about Robert’s experience at the University of Maryland Baltimore. [00:13:48] Robert tells the interesting story of how he ended up at Harvard, in part, thanks to the behaviorist B.F. Skinner. [00:15:40] Ken asks how Robert managed to be one of the few people who never had to write a dissertation while at Harvard to obtain his doctorate. [00:20:29] Dawn mentions how, at the time, Robert was becoming well known for his work with Skinner. She points out that many behaviorists at the time were working with chimpanzees and asks why Robert and Skinner were working with pigeons instead. [00:23:49] Dawn mentions that after his work with pigeons, Robert began to study creativity. He explains why he concluded that creativity is an orderly and predictable process that can be learned, rather than something one is simply born with. [00:27:34] Robert talks about how he founded the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies after his time at Harvard, and how he took on the role of executive director despite Skinner’s warning to never go into administrative work. [00:29:56] Ken asks about Robert’s time at the Cambridge Center and if all the papers he wrote during that time had a theme, or if they were just in general social-science communication. [00:31:28] Robert discusses his book “Cognition, Creativity and Behavior” which is a book of selected essays that he published in 1996. He discusses the various topics in the collection, ranging from creativity to parenting to artificial intelligence. [00:33:09] Ken asks why, after ten years at the Cambridge Center, Robert moved to the west coast. [00:35:40] Dawn asks about Robert’s research into arranged marriages and his finding that couples in arranged marriages developed a greater affection for each other than those who married for love. She asks him about his view that people can deliberately learn to love each other. [00:40:02] Robert discusses his time at the University of California San Diego where he gave students extr...
