Deja Foxx was raised by a single mom in Tucson, Arizona. As a free lunch kid in public schools, her family relied on SNAP benefits, Section 8 housing, and Medicaid to make ends meet. Having experienced homelessness because of her mother's struggles with substance abuse, she balanced high school classes with long nights working at a gas station. Deja found her first fight advocating for better sex education in Tucson schools where she organized a campaign of student storytellers, delivering a win for tens of thousands of students who until then had been learning a curriculum last updated in the 1980s. She later went viral for confronting then-Senator Jeff Flake after he voted to strip her and millions of other women of their access to essential birth control funding. Teen Vogue selected her as a member of their 21 Under 21 class of 2018, and Forbes named her to the 30 under 30 list in 2024. She also received Planned Parenthood's Catalyst for Change Award, a United Nations Global Impact Award, the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award, Gloria Steinem's Woman of Vision Award, and a Global Citizen Prize all before turning 25. After graduating from Columbia University as the first in her family to receive a college degree, Deja moved back to Tucson to continue the fight for women, youth, and underserved communities in the heart of Southern Arizona. On April 2, 2025 Deja announced her candidacy to become the first Gen Z woman elected to Congress, running in the open seat in Arizona's 7th Congressional District. And she's with me in THE BACK ROOM discussing her campaign. Got somethin' to say? ! On this episode of “B The Way Forward,” host Brenda Darden Wilkerson and guest Jhillika Kumar discuss her passion to empower the neurodivergent community. Jhillika's list of accolades started at a young age including the AnitaB.org Student of Vision Award, her inspiring Ted Talk and Forbes 30 Under 30 recognition. Jhillka is the CEO and founder of Mentra, an employment network committed to matching neurodivergent individuals with employers. From a young age, Jhillika was inspired to build an inclusive world and place for her non-speaking, autistic brother to thrive. Now, she's offering advice and guidance to communities of students and neurodivergent individuals and helping them find opportunities in the workforce. Jhillika's company has found great success so far with around 44,000 neurodivergent job seekers on their platform today and an investment from OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman. Jhillika and Brenda discuss why it's important for hiring managers to understand intersectionality and learn how people can have differences ranging from life experiences, cultures, gender identities, and more. Plus, Jhillika offers her advice for other young entrepreneurs looking to make a change in the world. “Our company serves as Mentors to both job seekers, because we empower them through the journey to find a job, to navigate interviews and all the executive functioning involved in that complicated process, to mentoring the recruiters on how do you communicate with someone who's neurodivergent and thinks differently? How do you evaluate talent? How do you overcome the bias that you might have because someone behaves a certain different way or speaks differently?” For more of Jhillika and her work check out: LinkedIn - /jhillika Instagram - @jhillika X - @Jhillika Facebook - /jhillika --- At AnitaB.org, we envision a future where the people who imagine and build technology mirror the people and societies for whom they build it. A couple of weeks ago I mentioned my daughter's passion for art and that one of her pieces recently won a Gold Key Award and a Vision Award... Today I share our recent experience at the Florida Theater where she received the award and explain how I try to encourage my daughters to follow their passion and celebrate achievements as they make their path forward. After the market closes today, the mighty NVIDIA (NVDA) will report earnings. I breakdown my expectations for the leader in AI (artificial intelligence)... give my take on the valuation… why it's pulling back before earnings… and if I would be a buyer on any pullback following the report. Speaking of AI, some analysts think the hype is too much and demand is slowing. I highlight some strong statistics on businesses who are integrating AI – both now and in the future – and let you decide if this bull market is being overhyped. Tomorrow on WSU Premium, I'll dive into detail on why we're in the very early stages of AI, why it will be disruptive to just about every industry and even threaten a lot of jobs. I can't stress enough how huge this market can be and why all investors should learn about this amazing trend in all things AI. As earnings season winds down, we're seeing some wild volatility in stocks even if they post solid earnings results. I breakdown Palo Alto Networks (PANW), Teladoc Health (TDOC), and SolarEdge Technologies (SEDG) and what it says about the current market. Bottom line, this market is one of the most dangerous I've ever seen. In this episode A major accomplishment for my daughter [1:14] NVDA reports [8:08] Is there an AI bubble? However, IRL I'm an actress, activist, producer and eco-momma who uses her superpowers for good. But did you know? You can also catch me as Sunny on critically acclaimed, Peabody Award-winning BETTER THINGS on F/X, and Kathryn in the new Starz horror-comedy series, SHINING VALE, alongside Courteney Cox and Greg Kinnear, and Kiki Rains on HBO's THE DEUCE. I have been invited to speak at The White House, The United Nations, Google, Cannes Lion, Women's Media Summit, Collision, and countless film festivals and other events about breaking barriers for women in all fields, specifically the entertainment industry. And to (not so humble) #humblebrag for a sec, I'm really proud to have been awarded the Persistence of Vision Award by the Women's Media Summit, the Sarah Powell Leadership Award by the Women's Prison Association, the MUSE Made In NY Award from The Mayors office & New York Women in Film and TV, the Moves Power Women Award, the Pioneer in Filmmaking Award, the Collaboration Award from the Coalition for Women in the Arts and Media, and, oh please, I don't want to bore you with all of um... Welcome to Season 3 of Naoness. The more we explore themes of inclusion, belonging, and the human condition, we find ourselves naturally exploring what it means to be free from gender norms. This is just the tip of the iceberg of being inspired by ALOK, an acclaimed gender non-conforming writer/poet, performer, and speaker, who captured our attention with their take on the necessity of bringing compassion into our everyday lives. We also share being inspired by musician Bruce Springsteen and former President, Barack Obama's relatively new podcast Renegades: Born in the USA. Themes discussed include having continued hopes for the American Dream and how each of us is responsible to practice to have the uncomfortable dialogues and conversations to mend our divisive culture. We pivot to our continuous love of food and talk about a traditional British dish and an innovative, easy pizza using Naan bread. How do we use technology to improve quality of life? What is the role of robots to improve human health and quality of life now and in the future? With robotics and AI, there is technology for helping people know themselves and help themselves. Things like mindfulness, cognitive behavior therapy, known interventions that are hard for people to do on their own can be done with a robot. Until everyone can have someone to help them, socially-assistive robots can fill a big void. Dr. Maja Matarić is a Chan Soon-Shiong distinguished professor of Computer Science, Neuroscience, and Pediatrics and the founder and director of the Interaction Lab at the University of Southern California where her research is aimed at developing technologies (particularly in robotics) that help improve human health and quality of life. Among others, Matarić received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring from President Barack Obama (2009), the Okawa Foundation Research Award, the NSF Career Award, the MIT Technology Review TR100 Innovation Award, the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Early Career Award, and the Anita Borg Institute Women of Vision Award in Innovation. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), IEEE, AAAI, and ACM.

Every individual's definition of career success is different, but in order to reach the pinnacle of any profession that you choose, choices will have to be made. Life is not going to hand you things, it's not easy and it's not always going to go your way. You have to be willing to fight and work hard for the goals you want to achieve. It's impossible to stay on course if failure is an option in your mind. Success doesn't happen overnight. It is your grit, guts, and resilience that will make you a superstar. You have to experience failure in order to enjoy success. Relationships are so important. The people you know and the reputation you create matter. Meaningful, quality, and lasting relationships must be earned and invested in. Build credit while you're young. Have your parents add you as an authorized signer to their credit cards. Assuming they have good credit, your parents adding a co-authorized signer to their credit card will allow all of their history to be on your credit card.
