The finger pointing continues as to who was to blame for the estimated 28,000 people losing power on Monday. Energy Minister Megan Woods told Morning Report there was a clear failure in the market on that night, one of the coldest of 2021. "The market did not work for New Zealanders on Monday night. The lights went out and they couldn't put the haters on. I think that is patently obvious to everybody." She said she is looking into what happened, including whether there could have been a breakdown in communication between Transpower and operators when it became clear during the there was going to be increased need for power in the evening. She is adamant it was not a problem about whether there was enough generation capacity. "The decision was made not to bring on the Taranaki Combined Cycle, because that takes three or so days to bring on. So, we did have more gas generations that could have been brought on. It is not a scarcity of gas. "The third rankine at Huntly takes six to 10 hours to fire up, the warning first went out from transpower at 6:42am saying we're going to need more. "Now I want to know what the nature of that communication was. Was it communicated in a way that people thought: 'Right, we really do need to bring things on.'"

Often called a panacea, 'tree planting' is a hot topic but it can fail when too little thought goes into it, so the guests on this episode reframe the practice, saying that 'tree growing' ought to be the focus of reforestation programs. 'Right tree, right place, right community” is the approach taken by Trees for Climate Health that guest Erin Axelrod directs, whose approach ensures that the dozens of projects it is implementing currently (and its overall goal to grow over 10 million trees by 2025) are appropriate to the areas, likely to succeed and survive, and benefit local communities. We also speak with freelance environmental journalist Mike Tatarski who recently filed a story about Vietnam's plan to plant a billion trees by 2025. Tatarski tells us about the impetus and goals of this nationwide effort, Vietnam's long history of supporting tree planting, and more. Articles discussed: • ”How to pick a tree-planting project? Mongabay launches transparency tool to help supporters decide” • ”‘Drastic forest development': Vietnam to plant 1 billion trees — but how?” Look for episode 119 of the Mongabay Newscast to hear our discussion of reforestation trends and issues with Mongabay staff writer Dr. Liz Kimbrough, who helped develop the new Reforestation Directory and app that rates such projects: Reforestation.app. Please invite your friends to subscribe to the Mongabay Newscast wherever they get podcasts, or download our free app in the Apple App Store or in the Google Store to have access to our latest episodes at your fingertips. The global 'right-to-repair' movement is gaining momentum. As part of a sweeping executive order targeting tech companies, US President Joe Biden has also endorsed the principle known as 'right-to-repair', calling for Federal Trade Commission rules that ban technology manufacturers from suing independent repair shops or hindering consumers from trying to repair their own devices. The movement this week also received backing from Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and the New Zealand government is said to be investigating rules as well. Consumer NZ Head of Testing Paul Smith told Francesca Rudkin the noise about the right to repair from consumers is starting to rise."People are getting tired. We are buying products, and then being told that we can't do what we like with them, and that's pretty much what everyone wants to do."We just want the ability to say 'I want to get this repaired', and there are things being put in place that are stopping that happening."LISTEN ABOVE

Twitter has taken hypocrisy to a new level! The big tech giant recently deleted a tweet from Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. In response, the Nigerian government banned Twitter from the entire country. This move led Twitter to declare that access to its platform is an "essential human right." Perhaps Twitter now knows how it feels to be like the many conservatives who have been blocked, banned, or throttled by Twitter as well as Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. Apparently, social media bias is ok when it's pointed at former President Trump, but not ok when Twitter is the victim.

Math Codes Kohila Sivas is a parent, teacher, Math Interventionist, and a Holistic Success Coach for students and parents. Over the past 22 years, Kohila has developed a simple proven system called MathCodes and she uses this system to help students rapidly transform their math performance as well as shift their mindset, grow their confidence, and outperform their expectations in all areas of their life. Kohila also works with parents on how to best support their child as a 'Student.' When parents are confident that their child has the tools they need to succeed, they have peace of mind about their child's future. No child should feel defeated or left behind in their education or life. Every child has the potential to excel in all areas of their studies and life. It is her mission to help children reach their full potential by showing them how to happily and successfully excel in math and in their performance. Kohila says that if given the 'RIGHT' environment, ALL students CAN excel! I asked Kohila to be a part of the show because not only have we been talking a lot about math in home learning this year, but we have also been talking about the fear and anxiety that comes up around the subject. The concern is that if a parent struggled in math at school, then how can they support their child to learn math at home? She Struggled Kohila says that she herself struggled in school. But around the age of 13, she started to learn how to hack math, or began "cracking the code". This became a turning point for her. She says math became a therapy for her. As she learned hacks and solved problems her mindset began to shift. She gained confidence and began to feel more in control in other areas of her life as well. This sense of empowerment led Kohila to become an educator and coach. She knew how it felt to go from dis-empowered to empowered and she wants other young people to experience the same. Kohila shared how important it is for parents to be a part of the empowerment process, not only in math, but in life learning. Don't get confused though. This is not about pushing our kids to cram, struggle and win and at all costs. In This Episode In this episode Kohila shares the questions that parents can ask so that they can be a better learning support for their kids. We also talk about the reasons why many parents and children continue to experience math anxiety and the ways we can start to shift our mindset. Math anxiety and the generation of speed and math drills The power of language Being a part of the learning process Setting your own benchmarks-letting go of comparison Don't think math has to be done with a workbook Math is all around you- where we can find it in our daily lives Building math environments for young children Math environments for older children How she supports learners through Math Codes What I love about this episode is that Kohila gives us many practical examples of how we can support math learning at home with our kids and tools we can use in our daily life. I also appreciate that Kohila was able to give her perspective on math learning in school as opposed to math in unschooling and home education and why they differ. I know that if you are a homeschooler or unschooler, you will find value in what Kohila shares. A little over a month ago, Tamar Yonah spoke with retired lawyer & political blogger, Ted Belman from www.IsraPundit.org He spoke with confidence that there was a 'plan', in which former president Donald Trump would retain power and stay president by ousting the unfairly elected Democrats. It's been at least a month since then, and nothing of the sort has happened. So, is Belman still confident of a Trump victory? Belman ascribes to what people have been hearing from right wing conspiracy theory pundits on videos, claiming that they had 'inside information' that the military or national guard was in the U.S. capitol because there were hundreds of arrest warrants already out, and they were going to round up Biden, Harris, Hillary Clinton Nancy Pelosi, etc, and arrest them. In addition, Trump would show the world the voter fraud and the crimes of the aforementioned leading Democrats. Well, this scenario never happened. --- it was all 'fake news', which shows that die-hards on the 'Right' can come up with fake news & conspiracy theories just like the Left. Ted Belman has been invited back on the show to let you know where he stands at present. He argues with Tamar, and says he still hopes 'the plan' will indeed come to fruition. This is a stimulating show, with never a dull moment as both go head-to head! The Tamar Yonah Show 08MAR2021 - PODCAST
