Annie Glenn (also known as Urban Girl Annie) started her company LG Retail Enterprises back in 1994 and has been doing retail ever since. Although Annie majored in literature in college, she knew she wanted to own a business since she was 10 years old. With no prior background in retail, she credits her business success to having great instincts and a lack of fear. Today, she's a proud entrepreneur and a mom to two amazing boys, Jack and Cooper. Her hope is that her stores, including Urban Girl Accessories, bring joy and happiness to whoever walks through the doors. Jamie Carl is the owner and founder of Serge + Jane in Minneapolis, MN. S+J is a lifestyle boutique featuring men's, women's, kids, pets, vinyl, home + gifts in a 3-story shop (4 including the open-air rooftop where they host fashion shows, trunk shows, pop-ups + always a DJ + dance party)! Jamie spent the first 15 years of her career in retail at Target Corporation. Jamie spent the last 9 years there working on and leading the Internal Events Team. She was responsible for Board Meetings all the way up to 10,000-person National Team Meetings with guest speakers, musicians, fashion shows and more! Jamie left the role at Target when she couldn't balance two big jobs within retail in one family and took the opportunity to stay home with her two young boys for several years, all while fine-tuning her vision for the shop and "visually re-merchandising" her house for each holiday!Michael Schultz is the co-owner and creative eye of Cursive New York, which operates 2 stores in New York City. Cursive is a tightly focused concept with the simple mission of cultivating joy. Michael, along with his husband, Douglas Duncan, have established Cursive as a strong and forward voice in the industry. Cursive offers gift, stationery, home and lifestyle products and is constantly evolving. Cursive operated in New York City's iconic Grand Central Terminal for 11 years and within ABC Carpet & Home for 15 years, until the Covid-19 pandemic upended those long runs. Making lemonade out of lemons, Schultz and Duncan doubled down on New York and opened 2 shops in New York's West Village neighborhood, 4 blocks apart. One shop is true to the original Cursive vision, while Cursive Home is the brand's extension into home goods. In this second Retailer Roundtable, we chat about what our three guests have been up to over the last couple of years. Annie, Jamie, and Michael all share the stories of how they started up their stores and how they approach shows. We discuss some of the highlights from the recent Las Vegas show, plans for the upcoming holiday season, and the craziest current in-store trends. We also talk about how everyone approaches sales and handles social media. This week's episode is sponsored by Fine Lines, a west coast wholesale rep agency with showrooms in Las Vegas and Seattle representing over 50 fabulous gifts, fashion + home lines. What's Inside: How Annie, Jamie, and Michael started their storesPlans for the upcoming holiday seasonHow to handle social mediaMentioned In This Episode:Annie GlennUrbangirlaccessories.comUrban Girl Accessories on InstagramJamie CarlSergeandjane.comSerge and Jane on InstagramMichael SchultzCursivenewyork.comCursive New York on Instagram

Structural color and biomimicry are the subjects of this episode, and the blue morpho butterfly is a featured player in both. Structural color is how light interacts with the nano surface of a material - like a blue morpho butterfly wing, or the exoskeleton of an iridescent beetle. Biomimicry refers how science borrows from the natural world to create new technology. My special guest is the immensely stylish and interesting Genevieve Hudson-Price, actor and jewelry designer born and raised in NYC. Her jewelry line, Blue Morpho Jewelry, is comprised of one-of-a-kind pieces handmade by Genevieve using recycled metals and ethically sourced precious materials—often featuring real butterfly wings and spider webs encased in hand-carved crystal and gold, as well as real beetles. What followed was a cascade of recognition and accolades by the likes of the FT's How To Spend It and stars like Madonna, Julia Roberts and designer Christian Louboutin. The Bokja duo offers us an insider look into the intricacies of their designs, but also the passion and sacrifices made that sit beneath the glamor of this popular Lebanese brand. We also delve into the psychology of what makes a design duo tick; what sets them apart; what keeps them ahead of trends and how they stay relevant. We're always going through some kind of loss, celebration, or change in our lives. Joining me to discuss the importance of ritual during times of great transition is Day Schildkret. Day is internationally known for the creation of Morning Altars, beautiful pieces of impermanent art. He is also the author of Hello, Goodbye: 75 Rituals for Times of Loss, Celebration, and Change.  A conversation about divorce is a conversation about endings. In order to begin again, it is important to mark this transition. Putting things in order through ritual can be healing. It helps you to feel resourced, reoriented, supported and witnessed. Learning how to let go and honor what once was, through ritual, is such an important topic. I hope you truly enjoy this conversation.  “Endings are valuable. The better you can end something, the better you can begin something new.” Show Highlights Why Day says, “You have to change with change.”  And what it means to participate in ending something, such as a relationship or marriage. (7:52) Endings need more from us than just going through the threshold. (10:02) Ritual: what it is and how it helps. (11:26) Why you need witnesses for endings as much as you do for beginnings. Witnesses affirm you are not alone and also acknowledge that change is happening. (12:17) Life transitions: we need to mark the places where we are turning, if we don't we still think we are on the same path. (15:54) Day talks about Morning Altars and how divorce and grief inspired him to start this practice of creating impermanent art from nature. (23:51) Rituals always have a beginning, middle, and end. They are contained and allow the space for grief, uncertainty, and emotion.  They encourage wholeness. (29:20) Day talks us through one of the divorce rituals from his book Hello, Goodbye: 75 Rituals for Times of Loss, Celebration, and Change. (31:31) There is a right and wrong time to do a ritual. If you are in the heat of a divorce or transition, it may not be the right time. (35:07) The importance of moving from grievance into grief. (38:47) Learn more about Day Schildkret: DAY SCHILDKRET is internationally known for Morning Altars and has inspired tens of thousands of people across the globe to heal and connect with nature, art and ritual. BuzzFeed calls Day's work, “a celebration of nature and life.”   Day's first book, Morning Altars: A 7-Step Practice to Nourish Your Spirit through Nature, Art and Ritual (The Countryman Press/WW Norton) ignited an international movement with a practice that renews and redeems our relationship to the living world. He recently launched the inaugural cohort of the year-long Morning Altars Practitioner Training & Certification with 100 students from five different continents. Our guest today is probably the best guest I could think of to have on a day like this. It is the one and only Dr. Deepak Chopra. He’s the founder of the Chopra Foundation and co-founder of the Chopra Center for Wellbeing. He is a world renowned pioneer in integrative medicine and personal transformation, a prominent figure in the new age movement. He’s written multiple books. Dr. Chopra is also one of the best known and wealthiest figures in alternative medicine. So, how did I get this interview? My friend Kabir emails me and asks, "Do you want to meet Deepak Chopra in New York City at his book launch?" Of course, I immediately cleared my schedule and emailed him back, "YES!" Sidenote: I can’t remember how many exclamation points. Then, Kabir replied to me and said, “Do you want to interview him for your podcast while you’re here?” At that point, I nearly choked on my bagel. You might be wondering: who is Kabir? How is he such a super power? Kabir Segal is a friend and friend of the show. He is the bestselling author of Coined: The Rich Life Of Money and How Its History Has Shaped Us. He was on So Money talking about that book as well as his own money journey on episode 73. As it turns out, he's friends with Deepak Chopra. Most recently, he, Deepak and Paul Avgerinos released a new book called, Home: Where Everyone is Welcome: Poems and Songs Inspired by American Immigrants. It’s a collection of about 34 poems, 12 songs, all inspired by a diverse group of immigrants who’ve made significant contributions to this country. The poems symbolize the many roads that lead to America and which we expect will continue to converge to build the highways to our future. So, that's what has prompted this meeting between myself and Deepak and hundreds of other people who came to this event. It was a magnificent event. Before it happened, I got the chance to sit down in Deepak’s office, which is at ABC Carpet in New York and it was very surreal. We talked about the way you wear money, the way that you spend it and how it reflects your inner most values. We also talk about the guilt that we sometimes feel around making money and how that can lead to poverty consciousness a To learn more about Dr. Deepak Chopra visit www.deepakchopra.com or follow him on Twitter @DeepakChopra.
