I am a long-time admirer of the work of architecture firm Sawyer Berson because I can see myself living in every one of the houses they create—every apartment, every interior, and every garden. Their homes, whether modernist, Federal, or traditional, are always so airy, beautiful, chic, and inviting. They are dazzling in their elegance as they make your heart drop, because Sawyer Berson have mastered all fields of architecture. Their homes are thoroughly researched, beautifully executed, and meticulously furnished to the smallest detail, with landscapes that are simply divine. They have famously created homes for stars, but it is lesser known that they have also built community gardens for Bette Midler's NY Restoration Project and the kitchen garden for the God's Love We Deliver which provides meals for the needy. Brian Sawyer, co-founder of the firm, is my guest today. He received his Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Virgina and worked with the Central Park Conservancy in restoration projects before joining Robert AM Stern, rising to the head of the landscape architecture department.
April 25, 2024 - As part of an effort to address chronic conditions with healthy foods, Democratic lawmakers are pushing for Medicaid coverage of medically tailored meals. We explore the merits of this idea with Karen Pearl, chair of the Food is Medicine Coalition and special advisor to God's Love We Deliver.
I had the opportunity to interview Dorella Walters, who is the Chief Business Development Officer for God's Love We Deliver in New York. Her job is basically to prospect for, and develop revenue-generating partnerships that do two main things: they diversify the organization's funding portfolio, and bring in the dollars that allow them to serve a substantially greater number of people who desperately need their services. She's facilitated well over $10 million in revenue-generating partnerships for the organization, and she's on track to do much more. She shared some very powerful insights about how she develops these partnerships, but also what it takes inside the organization to accommodate and embrace that kind of growth. And to be constantly looking forward, looking to figure out new ways to build relationships and partnerships that will allow them to meet the tremendous need that they know exists. We talked a lot about strategic relationship development and messaging, which are critical in this process. But we also talked about vision, leadership and organizational culture, and how to develop a culture that embraces growth and change on an ongoing basis. In this episode, Dorella shares her insight and advice on:How to center vision and mission as you build revenue-generating partnerships How strategic relationship building in policy circles and with business partners can overlap and serve to strengthen your credibility and influenceHow to build champions throughout a partner organization's decisionmaking hierarchyIngredients of a successful strategic partnership-building teamHow to cultivate and sustain a culture of innovation and growth throughout your organization How to engage your board in your partnership-building work How to support growth and learning for every team member in a meaningful way If you enjoyed this episode and found value in it, please reach out to Dorella and let her know. You can find her on LinkedIn @Dorella Walters, or you can email her at dwalters@glwd.org. I'd appreciate it if you'd take a moment to leave a rating and review of the podcast on whatever platform you're listening on. Thanks!

This month, Heather Shanahan sits down with Karen Pearl and David Ludwigson of God's Love We Deliver (GLWD). GLWD is a nonprofit organization based in New York City that provides medically tailored meals, plus nutrition counseling, to individuals living with severe and chronic illnesses. Founded in 1985, GLWD delivers these meals free of charge to clients' homes throughout the five boroughs of New York City and parts of New Jersey. Karen shares her experience as CEO and discusses her decision to retire, with practical advice for other nonprofit leaders to engage board members in succession planning. David, GLWD's current CEO, discusses the transition process and how it set him up for success. Listen to what they learned about board involvement, organization-wide transparency, and how to achieve a (mostly) peaceful transition. My guest this week is Dorella Walters, Senior Director of Business Development & Community Partnerships at God's Love We Deliver, the AMAZING New York City charity that cooks and home-delivers nutritious, medically-tailored meals for people too sick to shop or cook for themselves. James Beard Award- winning Pastry Chef, Dominique Ansel has shaken up the pastry world with innovation and creativity at the heart of his work. Chef Dominique is responsible for creating some of the most fêted pastries in the world, including: the Cronut® (named one of TIME Magazine's “25 Best inventions of 2013”), The Cookie Shot, Frozen S'more, Blossoming Hot Chocolate, and many more. He is the Chef/Owner of eponymous bakeries in New York City and Hong Kong, and has been named the World's Best Pastry Chef by the World's 50 Best Restaurants awards. He is also the recipient of the Ordre du Mérite Agricole, France's second highest honor. Perhaps what has been most widely been reported on is Dominique's creation of the Cronut®, his signature croissant-doughnut hybrid pastry that first launched at his eponymous Bakery in New York in May 2013, soon becoming the world's first-ever viral pastry. Within hours, photos of the Cronut® spread across the social media sphere, and a single blog post about this brand new pastry was linked to over 140,000 times in just the first day. Within days, guests visited from all around the world to line up for blocks around the bakery, rain or shine. Taking two months and more than 10 different recipes to perfect, the Cronut® isn't simply croissant dough that's been fried. Made with laminated dough that has been likened to a croissant (but instead uses a proprietary recipe), it's first proofed then fried in grapeseed oil at a specific temperature. Once cooked, each Cronut® is 1. rolled in sugar; 2. filled with cream; and 3. topped with glaze. The entire process takes three days to complete. Today, Cronut® pastries are available only at Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York, with the flavor changing every month, never repeating. In its first year, TIME Magazine named the Cronut® one of the “25 Best Inventions of 2013,” and it has since appeared in the news across the world, from Good Morning America to the The Today Show, ABC's The Chew, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Live with Kelly & Michael, CNN's Piers Morgan Live with Anthony Bourdain, E! News, Bloomberg, and more. It has also been featured on TV shows like Modern Family, The Mindy Project, Jeopardy!, Two Broke Girls, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Gilmore Girls, and others. But before the Cronut®, a time that our very first guests refer to as B.C. (“Before Cronut®”), it all began years ago from humble beginnings. Growing up in a small town in France just north of Paris, Dominique never set out to become a chef. At the age of 16, he began working at a local restaurant in order to help support his family. There was a free culinary school in his hometown, so he enrolled in their apprenticeship program, first as a savory cook and then as a pastry cook. It was the precision and scientific nature of pastry that appealed to Dominique immediately, and from then on, he knew what he was meant to do. At age 19, Dominique went on to complete his military service in French Guyana in South America as part of a community program teaching locals how to cook. Upon returning to France, he used all of his savings to buy a beat-up car and drove to Paris, dropping off resumes at any bakery he could find. He later landed at the legendary French pastry shop, Fauchon, as one of 30 seasonal holiday workers. He was told only one employee would remain at the end of the season, and when the time came, he was the one they chose. Dominique stayed with Fauchon for nearly eight years, eventually leading international expansion, traveling the world opening new shops. In 2006, Dominique moved to New York City with just two suitcases to serve as the Executive Pastry Chef of Daniel Boulud's renowned restaurant Daniel. During his six years there, the restaurant earned its coveted third Michelin star and a four-star review from The New York Times. In November 2011, with a team of just four employees, Dominique opened Dominique Ansel Bakery on a quiet Soho street. Serving both sweet and savory items with pastries reigning supreme, the bakery became a neighborhood destination and was named Time Out New York's best bakery and Zagat's highest ranked bakery in the city. Signature creations like the DKA (Dominique's Kouign Amann) and made-to-order Madeleines quickly became guest favorites. It wasn't until May 2013 that a new creation Dominique deemed the Cronut® launched, putting this small Soho shop on the map worldwide. The Bakery became the birthplace of more new creations and internationally beloved inventions, from the Frozen S'mores to the Cookie Shot, Gingerbread Pinecone, Christmas Morning Cereal, Blossoming Hot Chocolate and more. In 2020, Dominique launched Dang Wen Li by Dominique Ansel in Hong Kong, featuring a capsule collection of brand new pastries created exclusively for Hong Kong, made-to-order specialties, and classic French viennoiserie. 2021 brought the launch of two new shops: a new location of Dang Wen Li by Dominique Ansel opened in June 2021 at H Queen's in the heart of Hong Kong's Central neighborhood. And in July 2021, Chef Dominique launched Dominique Ansel Workshop, a croissant counter inside of his Flatiron NYC kitchens, with a menu celebrating all things viennoiserie – from classics reimagined to old-school French recipes recreated with a modern twist. Coming up in Fall 2022, Chef Dominique will be opening his first shop in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace. Dominique Ansel Las Vegas will feature a number of his signature creations as well as a collection of brand new pastries made just for the city. Dominique published his first cookbook, DOMINIQUE ANSEL: The Secret Recipes (Simon & Schuster), in October 2014, featuring a number of signature recipes from his flagship Dominique Ansel Bakery in NYC. His second cookbook, Everyone Can Bake, debuted in April 2020, with his favorite go-to recipes for bases, fillings, and finishing so readers can mix-and- match and create endless possibilities of delicious desserts at home. Outside of the kitchen, Dominique is a dedicated supporter of various charitable organizations, including the fight to end hunger with Food Bank for New York City, City Harvest, and God's Love We Deliver. In the Cronut®'s first year alone, he helped to raise over $100,000 by auctioning off just 24 Cronut® pastries. On this episode, Dominique joins host Mitchell Davis and discusses the backstory and beyond the Cronut®, the importance of not giving up easily, and why it's best to work for people you believe in. Follow Dominique on Instagram @dominiqueansel For more on Dominique and his work, visit: www.DominiqueAnsel.com

Anna Lutz and Elizabeth Davenport chat with Julia Turshen about the process of researching and writing a cookbook, and how it felt to include an essay on breaking up with diet culture in her latest cookbook, Simply Julia. She also talks about how disconnection is inherent in diet culture; in families, or among friends, having weight loss as a common goal can feel temporarily good, but ultimately creates a deficit of joy around food. We discuss: How isolating it can be to grow up in a family that is immersed in diet culture, but also how connecting with people and having conversations about the impacts of diet culture is incredibly healing. How cookbooks are so often welcomed into peoples homes, but the contents are often not questioned. Examples of diet culture's trickery and disconnection when it appears in cooking and cookbooks. The over abundance of images of thin, white, cis-gendered women in food-related social media posts is detrimental and is largely what has lead us to equate that type of body with “healthy”. How forms of oppression tend to be best countered as a community. Julia's go-to meals. When not performing surgery on the brain or spine as an assistant professor of neurological surgery, Dr. Anderer is one of the most interesting men in the world - He practices Ashtanga yoga, spends as much time outdoors with his wife and two children as possible, and still has time to: be a founding member of the North Brooklyn Runners; an advisory board member of the Concussion Legacy Foundation; serve on the boards of the NY State Neurosurgical Society, the Japanese Medical Society of America, God's Love We Deliver, and the North Brooklyn Parks Alliance; and play in a band... You can find Dr. Anderer on social platforms under his name: Dr.Erich Anderer. This podcast is for information and educational purposes only, it is not meant to be medical or career advice. God’s Love Deliver believes that food is medicine. And that food is love. They have been serving every New York City borough since 1985 and now also serve clients in parts of New Jersey, Westchester, Suffolk, and Nassau Counties. Their work is a model for communities across the country. To support the health of their clients, God’s Love We Deliver also provides ongoing nutrition assessment, education, and counseling. It is a non-sectarian organization serving people in need and their children and caregivers. All of their services are provided free to clients and full of love.On this episode, Julia talks to four longtime members of GLWD's staff: Daniel Metzger (Executive Chef), Lisa Zullig (Director of Nutrition Services), Dorella Walters (Senior Director of External Program Affairs), and Alissa Wassung (Director of Policy and Planning).HELPFUL FOLLOW-UP LINKS:For more about God's Love We Deliver, head here. For more about (and to order!) This episode we welcome David Waters, CEO of Community Servings, to our show. Community Servings is a Massachusetts-based Medically Tailored Meals (MTM) program that is also a leader in the national Food is Medicine Coalition. Community Servings was founded in 1990 to serve local Dorchester and Roxbury residents struggling with HIV / AIDS. It is now a regional organization serving 15 different meal plans to 2,300 patients at a time. You may have heard them mentioned in previous discussions not only for their role in MTMs, but also the Massachusetts State Food Plan. You can access that plan from the Food is Medicine Massachusetts coalition. As referenced in this episode, there are a lot of resources out there on Medically Tailored Meals. Here are some highlights:Definition of "Medically Tailored Meals" and guidelines.FiMC Accelerator Program - a 12 month intensive program for creating and scaling new MTM projects.Research on MTM impacts - examples from the FiMC research library, note that many programs are also doing intensive program evaluations with partners (for example, insurance payers) that aren't necessarily published. This may merit another episode for the data lovers in the crowd.California Food is Medicine Coalition - Notable among the different MTM programs because California has a lot of projects going within a single state and they are working together to develop funding models and study impact. Examples of Nutrition Information - God's Love We Deliver, the NYC-based MTM program, has some great nutrition resources and fact sheets that show how they tailor meals for different medical conditions and food preferences. Where to find out about MTM work in Vermont - part of Bi-State's current Food in Health Care grant involves a consultant-led planning process to develop next steps for exploring MTMs in Vermont, look at this page for background information and look for new updates in late spring, 2021 when the project will be wrapping up its first stage.Special thanks to Marydale DeBor of Fresh Advantage LLC who is working with Bi-State on our MTM project and helped arrange this interview.
God's Love We Deliver has been delivering medically tailored meals to people who are ill and in need of food. Started by one woman in the 80s who saw the plight of an AIDS patient and decided to take action, GLWD has grown into an organization that now caters to anyone from any background who is ill and requires food. In this episode, I talk to 2 employees, Natasha Bunzl, Communications Associate and Dorella Walters, Senior Director at GLWD about the organization's mission, the work they did in 2020 and what our listeners can do to help.
Today we sit down with NYC-based pastry chef, writer, and activist Natasha Pickowicz. Natasha has ran the pastry programs at some of my most favorite NYC restaurants including Altro Paradiso and Flora Bar. Earlier this spring, she was announced as a Finalist for the 2020 James Beard Foundation Awards for Outstanding Pastry Chef, her third year being nominated in that category. What really drew me to Natasha was her activism. Much of Natasha's pastry work explores the relationship with baking and social justice, including ongoing collaborations with seminal NYC institutions like Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, God's Love We Deliver, and Planned Parenthood of Greater New York, for whom she helped produced a massive city-wide bake sale, raising over $150,000 between 2017-2019.This was a particularly fascinating conversation for me. Since covid hit last spring, I have been chatting with many creatives about navigating the losses within their respective industries. As you all know, I have a passion for food and eating, so I was particularly curious how this past year impacted my foodie friends. Natasha gives us a raw, unfiltered look into the culinary world. She shares how she'd like to see the restaurant industry evolve post covid, and how we can use loss to find opportunity. Can you imagine having grown 30% during this pandemic? What would that mean for your team's career security? What would that mean for your energy and overall outlook? How would that have affected you over the past 11 months? This week I sat down with the incredible leader, Karen Pearl of For God's Love We Deliver who has done just that. In the early days of 2020, Karen worked hard and intentionally on her team culture. She shares the lessons, the trials, the journey she has been on to become the guided leader she is now."The hardest thing for us was, the night everything, everywhere, everyone shut down, we had nearly 3,000 phone calls asking for help through our services. That is a lot of need. We have to identify who was looking for what assistance and help, make sure we had the right resources, finding the referrals, having enough food, because if we weren't moving quickly, people don't stick around for a long time."In a time of so much need and demand, relying on your team can be difficult, particularly when there is a national pandemic, racial injustice, economic struggles, and so much more. Karen has developed a team that could withstand the pressure. "I'm so fortunate that over the years, our staff has just gotten stronger and stronger and they're able to take care of what needs to get taken care of, even now."This episode is timely, deep, and empowering. I want to thank Karen for her time, I left feeling ready to serve because of her inspiration. Special thank you to our sponsor, Humentum, who during such a difficult time have dedicated themselves to inclusivity, strength, and supporting those on their team and their members. Hi all. As promised here is my 2nd in the series for managing this volatile time. This is a quick episode with my tips for managing your money during volatility. A bit of background, yes I was an attorney for several years and studied finance, but I received the biggest chunk of personal financial education during the years that I worked as a licensed financial advisor for middle class families. Some of these tips may seem obvious and some are aimed at keeping you calm. But most importantly I’d like us to try and shift away from a fear-based mentality when thinking & talking about money during this time and take advantage of this downtime to utilize some best practices that you should keep, or put in place for the long haul. No one’s situation is the same so I tried to paint in broad brushstrokes and if you have the resources and ability to connect with a financial professional please do so, it’s important to think about your financial and your physical health at this time. If not, these tips are a good start and here are some additional trusted resources as we navigate through this turbulent time. We’ll resume our regular schedule of guests the week of March 30th and until then, keep being the bold, brave badasses you are! Hi all. Given what’s going on around the world right now I wanted to deviate from our regularly scheduled format to give you a few quick episodes to help you get through this time with a little more ease and extra tools in your toolkit. This first, super quick, solo episode is one that I wanted to record right away since a lot of people are being asked to work from home now due to the Coronavirus. And while we all may be stressed for different reasons, working from home doesn’t have to be one of them. This episode is short and sweet and has mental, physical and technological tips to make this transition easier for everyone. And remember.. This too shall pass. Heads up, heels on, ever going boldly. XO Next up on the 23rd I’ll talk to you about how to manage your money in times of volatility. It’s the 40th Anniversary of THE WARRIORS, yet the film became a phenomenon as soon as it hit theaters in 1979. By not villainizing gang life, THE WARRIORS serves as a voice for 1970s youth culture. Chocked full of visual treats in an unrealistic, yet relatable world, the film easily achieved cult status. Community, comradery and survival mode kick in for this pulse-pounding adventure all the way from New York City to Coney Island. ▶️Synopsis: After being framed for the murder of a major gang leader, The Warriors attempt to clear their name and hustle 30 miles back to their home turf. ⏩⏩Discussions include: The original story behind THE WARRIORS, plus the script adaptation to screen; production, atmosphere and style of the film; costuming and fight choreography; behind-the-scenes tidbits; the exclusively New York cast; the glorified depiction of gang life; usage of violence in the film and how THE WARRIORS fits into director Walter Hill’s action-filled career. **Starring Michael Beck, Deborah Van Valkenburgh, James Remar, David Patrick Kelly. This episode features a conversation with Emmett Findley, the Manager of Communications at God’s Love We Deliver, and Craig Palmer, one of God’s Love We Deliver’s longtime clients. God’s Love We Deliver is based in New York City and their mission is to improve the health and well-being of men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses by alleviating hunger and malnutrition. Everyday they prepare and deliver thousands of beautiful meals to people who, because of their illness, are unable to provide or prepare meals for themselves. They also offer nutrition education and counseling and all of their services are given free to clients without regard to income. God’s Love We Deliver believes so much that food is love and it is medicine. Julia and Emmett reflect on the queer community and Julia talks to Craig about what it means to be on the receiving end of God's Love We Deliver's meals. There are also answers to listeners' questions about food and cooking. Follow-up links: For Emmett's music video about food safety (No Tanks Tops in the Kitchen), head here. On this episode, we talk with Jason Helgerson, founder of Helgerson Solutions Group and Former Medicaid Director for New York and Wisconsin. Jason shares his perspective on Value-based payment progress and direction tells us who needs to get involved and how, and we discuss how to measure success. That is, how will we know if value-based payment has been adequately deployed, and more importantly, how will we know if it's working? This episode is sponsored by VBP Forward: VBP Forward will host its inaugural conference February 20-21, 2019 in Buffalo, NY at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo. The conference will bring together over 200 professionals who serve Medicaid and Medicare special needs or complex populations or have an interest in that value chain. Participants will gain insight into the next generation of value-based payment and will be provided with a roadmap for their path towards effective value payment for special needs populations. In addition to clinical providers, VBP Forward will have a track and focus on guiding community-based organizations down the right path for the collection of social determinants of health and how they can become not only an integral part of care delivery but also the revenue cycle associated with that delivery. 2:09 Engaging providers who feel left behind by the Value-Based Payments conversations. 3:18 In New York, 80% of all reimbursement for Medicaid must be under VBP contract by 2020. 5:36 Community Based Organizations are treating the same issues health systems are struggling with. What do CBOs and Health systems need to learn about each other to create new sustainable business models? 9:10 Breaking down the language barriers. 12:49 What has made early pioneers successful? Green and Healthy Homes Initiative God's Love We Deliver 15:11 How do CBOs explain to plans and health systems what the expected ROI will be? "Walk before you run." 18:07 Begin the dialog with payors early. You can see this as an opportunity or a threat, but the train has left the station. 21:40 When taking on risk, you're responsible for more than you were in a FFS model. This necessitates partnerships with CBOs. If you wait, you're going to have to take what's left. 22:45 What's happening outside NY? Examples nationally and abroad. England and NHS 28:15 What about Medicare and commercial payors? 31:15 Measuring success in a VBP future. What does success look like for the state, for CBOs, for doctors, and for patients? “I think at some point in the not too distant future, we will look back on how we treat people who are sick and with flu-like symptoms almost as bloodletting. Requiring them to leave their homes and go to a clinic to be treated when the technology exists to do bloodwork and other tests in the home; with new telehealth tools to be able to almost do a complete exam on those individuals without them having to leave the comfort of their home, which is in the best interest of the patient and the public's health, those models are not possible in the traditional FFS system. They are much more possible in a value-based world." "Consumers having more choices will be the real power of Value-Based Payments." 37:00 How close are we to knowing which clinical outcomes to measure? HEDIS measures taken from claims data measure process and not the true outcome. Patient-reported outcomes are needed to say if patients are getting high-quality services. Beyond healthcare measures, how do we measure the health and wellbeing of a community? 42:00 Helgerson Solutions – What do you do and who do you do it for? Kelly Hogan is the Clinical Nutrition and Wellness Manager at the Dubin Breast Center at Mountain Sinai in New York City. It’s a long title—but it basically means she’s a super smart registered dietitian who wants to help people establish non-diet lifestyles. On this episode, she talks about what that means and how that idea helped her figure out her own food philosophy. Kelly also talks about how she became an R.D.—including how she made a major career change and went back to school while working full-time—and she shares a day in the life of her own diet. We play a game [I made up] called Wellness World Word Association, where Kelly offers up her take on everything from #cleaneats, cheat days, and the new documentary What the Health to Goop and apple cider vinegar, and Kelly breaks down the difference between an R.D., a nutritionist, and a health coach—plus what you should understand about each. Kelly is a also many-time marathoner, so we talk about where she’s at with running right now, how her relationship with running has evolved over time, and how adopting a puppy—Peanut!—changed the game. On this special episode of The Food Seen, host Michael Harlan Turkell is on location at the Michael Kors Building in Manhattan for a sit-down with Kyle MacLachlan. The building serves as the headquarters for God's Love We Deliver, the New York City metropolitan area's leading provider of nutritious, individually-tailored meals to people who are too sick to shop or cook for themselves. Though perhaps best known for his work as an actor, MacLachlan is a longtime and passionate supporter of God's Love, which now cooks 5,800 meals each weekday, delivering them to clients living with life-altering illnesses in all five boroughs of New York City, Westchester and Nassau Counties, and Hudson County, New Jersey.
God’s Love We Deliver started in 1985, when Ganga Stone biked over a couple bags of groceries to a friend living with HIV/AIDS. When she realized that he needed more than raw ingredients, she founded God’s Love — an organization that tailors nutritious, health-promoting meals for people living with serious illnesses. On today’s Eating Matters episode—the second installment of the “Prescribing Food” series—the organization’s Director of Policy and Planning Alissa Wassung joins assistant producer Talia Ralph, along with Sarah, a client of God’s Love. The conversation spans how their client base has grown and changed to what progressive policies are happening in New York state to make these kinds of services easier to access. “Food is love,” is one of GLWD’s central tenets, but it is also a powerful tool to make people’s lives easier and healthier as they face cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other serious illnesses. This program was brought to you by Cain Vineyard & Winery. “Back in 2001 we actually expanded our mission to serve people living with all severe illnesses: cancer, MS, Alzheimer’s, etc. The reason we did that is that we had learned so much about treating illness with nutrition with our work with the HIV/AIDS community that we had clients calling us up saying ‘my friend has cancer, can you help them?’ and of course we couldn’t say anything but ‘yes.'” [4:09] “We believe that being sick and hungry is a crisis that demands urgent response… We never charge clients for their meals and we will never have a waiting list. ” [5:26] —Alissa Wassung on Eating Matters
