POPULARITY
Im going to read from the press release this time coz its a good'n The simpatico sophomore album by the unstoppably prolific Alex Paterson and fellow Orb original Andy Falconer is an epic sail through the sky at night. Helmed by gentle spirits with warmth in their hearts, ‘SETI' feels cold and dark, yet also glowing and welcoming. Aboard a cosy candlelit spacecraft, the duo experience the cosmos as somewhere overwhelmingly infinite, yet reassuring and friendly. A sort of ‘ambient unplugged', it's full of acoustic instruments and nostalgic samples, folding space between the old world, and places where no man has gone before. Dr Paterson speaks “The first LP had a great reception and sold so well I couldn't even get a copy myself. Andy is brilliant at making ambient music, and working with him is always rewarding. We understand each other's brains – it's easy and organic - so doing another made total sense.” He adds, “SETI stands for Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence, but it's also something you sit on, to chill out, which is why the album contains a Three Piece Suite. This record is musical ambience, which is what we like to make, rather than drone ambience, which there's a lot of these days.” That last point struck me as it describes the sensations I associate with the music of the Orb which is a sort of maximal ambient rush. It's a sound that whizzes me right back to my dreamy youth tbh when these guys were so responsible for making the soundtrack that accompanied me through my last years at school. It was a time when I needed music to blow my mind. When I was told I could speak to an original member of the orb I was so curious to ask Andy how it was all made back in those days. We get into that right at the end of this chat as well as a walk down memory lane and up the present. It was great to catch up with Andy in Portugal. He's had quite the life! Let's get into it
Step into the ambient world of trailblazer Dr. Alex Paterson of The Orb, sharing his captivating story on Lost in Sound. Our journey with Alex takes us from the inception of ambient house to his acoustic adventures with the Sedibus project, all while uncovering the artistic vigor that has fueled his five-decade-long voyage through the music industry. We relish the nostalgia of chart-topping victories, a totally surreal chess-themed performance on Top of the Pops, and delve into the enduring resonance of "Little Fluffy Clouds."With laughter and earnest reflection, Alex recalls the exuberance of the acid house scene, his time as a roadie for Killing Joke, and the antics of The KLF, painting a vibrant picture of the friendships and chaos that shaped an era. This episode isn't just a look back at the past; it's a testament to music's timeless journey and the undying passion that drives an artist like Alex, who eschews retirement and zeitgeist for the relentless pursuit of creation. Finally, through candid anecdotes and personal memories, Alex provides insight into the lasting influence of late artists, muses humorously about secret islands for escaping fame, and shares how non-traditional musicians like himself have brought new sounds to the forefront. From wild rave stories to the enduring friendships forged in the heat of the acid house scene's heyday, this episode is an affectionate homage to the rhythms that keep legends like Dr. Alex Patterson crafting the soundtrack of our lives. The second Sedibus album ‘SETI' out now on Orbscure Recordings, check it out here. The Orb are the biggest ambient act of all time - that's probably true but they were certainly THE ambient band of the 90s, selling enormous amounts of records, touring a live show which drew breathless comparisons to Pink Floyd, arguably inventing the concept of Chill Out, and generally occupying a unique space as a truly experimental group in the mainstream of music. Alex Paterson is the only constant member of The Orb, who last released an album in 2023, and has the scars of litigation to prove it - their 90s catalogue is till being argued over with its owners, Universal, and the lawsuits over uncleared samples have been numerous and acrimonious. So we talk about all that, plus his formative years as an unofficial member of and sometime roadie for The Killing Joke, doing A&R for E.G. Records in the 80s, starting The Orb with KLF legend Jimmy Caughty, DJing at the legendary UFO in Berlin the night the wall came down, and of course his new record with his other project, Sedibus. Some parallels here with the episode we did with Adrian Sherwood... it took a fair bit of work to get this one into shape, but I think it was worth it. This eclectically electronic episode features Alex Paterson, the founder of one of the most successful dance acts of the 90's, The Orb. Starting his journey as roadie for Killing Joke, and A&R at EG records, he moved into DJing. In 1989, Youth and Alex Paterson started the WAU! Mr. Modo label. Their early releases of a selection of industrial techno dubs and heavy sound system dubs from artists such as Napthali, Manasseh, Bim Sherman and Jah Warrior are long deleted and fetch high sums in private sales. His cofounding of the Orb with Jimmy Cauty fell apart (problems with Jimmy's KLF project), but Alex continued to forge a massive career – later they kissed and made up. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the extraordinary story of Alex Paterson... If you can, please support the Electronically Yours podcast via my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/electronicallyour

Youth (Martin Glover) Youth is most famous for being the bass player in Killing Joke. He left the band in 1982, and soon after founded his own commercially orientated dub funk band Brilliant, which recorded one album in 1986 before later disbanding. In 1989, Youth and Alex Paterson started the WAU! Mr. Modo label. Their early releases were industrial techno dubs and heavy sound system dubs from artists such as Napthali, Manasseh, Bim Sherman and Jah Warrior. In the early nineties, Youth formed techno and house music duo Blue Pearl together with American singer Durga McBroom. They scored a handful of hit singles including their blue vinyl debut "Naked in the Rain", which reached No. 4 in the UK Singles Chart and was also a No. 5 dance hit in the U.S. in 1990. It was followed by "Little Brother" and "(Can You) Feel the Passion". An album, Naked, was also released. In 1994, Youth rejoined Killing Joke and their album Pandemonium was released on his Butterfly Recordings label, as was the 1996 follow-up, Democracy. Youth's Butterfly Records label has produced artists such as Take That, Wet Wet Wet, Tom Jones, the Orb, System 7, Maria McKee and Heather Nova. Youth was the co-producer of the Verve's Urban Hymns and Dolores O'Riordan's 'Are You Listening?'
