Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. Today, Emily chats with Patrick Martinez, a mixed media visual artist from Los Angeles.About Artist Patrick Martinez:Patrick Martinez maintains a diverse practice that includes mixed media landscape paintings, neon sign pieces, cake paintings, and his Pee Chee series of appropriative works. The landscape paintings are abstractions composed of Los Angeles surface content; e.g. distressed stucco, spray paint, window security bars, vinyl signage, ceramic tile, neon sign elements, and other recognizable materials. These works serve to evoke place and socio-economic position, and further unearth sites of personal, civic and cultural loss.Patrick's neon sign works are fabricated to mirror street level commercial signage, but are remixed to present words and phrases drawn from literary and oratorical sources. His acrylic on panel Cake paintings memorialize leaders, activists, and thinkers, and the Pee Chee series documents the threats posed to black and brown youth by law enforcement.Patrick Martinez (b. 1980, Pasadena, CA) earned his BFA with honors from Art Center College of Design in 2005. His work has been exhibited domestically and internationally in Los Angeles, Mexico City, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Miami, New York, Seoul, and the Netherlands, and at venues including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Brooklyn Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the Smithsonian NMAAHC, the Tucson Museum of Art, the Buffalo AKG Museum, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Vincent Price Art Museum, the Museum of Latin American Art, the Crocker Art Museum, the Rollins Art Museum, the California African American Museum, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, and El Museo del Barrio, among others.Patrick's work resides in the permanent collections the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Broad Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles (MOCA), the Rubell Museum, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, the California African American Museum, the Autry Museum of the American West, the Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Tucson Museum of Art, the Pizzuti Collection of the Columbus Museum of Art, the University of North Dakota Permanent Collection, the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, the Crocker Art Museum, the Escalette Permanent Collection of Art at Chapman University, the Manetti-Shrem Museum of Art at UC Davis, the Rollins Museum of Art, and the Museum of Latin American Art, among others.Patrick was awarded a 2020 Rauschenberg Residency on Captiva Island, FL. In the fall of 2021 Patrick was the subject of a solo museum exhibition at the Tucson Museum of Art entitled Look What You Created. In 2022, Patrick was awarded a residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts. This year, Patrick's suite of ten neon pieces purchased by the Whitney Museum of American Art is on yearlong exhibition installed in the Kenneth C. Griffin Hall in the entrance of the Museum. In September 2023, Patrick opened a solo exhibition at the ICA San Francisco titled Ghost Land and in November of 2023 Patrick will exhibit in Desire, Knowledge, and Hope (with Smog) at The Broad Museum in Los Angeles, CA. Patrick will be the subject of an expansive solo exhibition at the Dallas Contemporary opening in April 2024. Join me for some detective work, to find clues about the missing flowers and find out why the Semper Augustus bulb was so highly regarded, and how tulips made it to Holland in the first place. And what's the deal with the missing flowers when they appear to be all accounted for in the Dutch Golden age paintings? Let's get started and dig into the shadowy garden of secrets. During the Dutch Golden age a popular category artists painted in was still life and drilling further into that category - floral arrangements. I think the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, Netherlands describes the flower painting best on their web page displaying Flower Still Life by Hans Gillisz Bollinger (1644) oil on wood - they said “A bouquet of striped tulips, a rose, an orange lily, a red and white carnation, stocks and a cyclamen. This is an imaginary bouquet…” Were these painters of flowers - early fantasy-botanical artists? Recording flowers and sometimes insects, often incorporating broken tulips into their compositions. Broken tulips were a clear favorite of many of the painters. We'll talk about what broken tulips are soon. If you're like me, you might be surprised that tulips didn't originally come from Holland. Tulips grew wild in the valleys of the heavenly mountains, or the Tian Shan mountains of China. How did tulips end up in Holland? There are so many questions, right?!?  It wasn't from point a to point b.  Thank you so much for your company and for listening! Originally conceived as a ceiling panel for a Venetian palace, the monumental shaped canvas showcases the artist’s illusionistic skill in depicting clouds, drapery and allegorical figures as if they are hovering above us. Penny also traces the fascinating ownership history of the painting, from its original context in Italy to an equally remarkable manor house in England, before finding its way to Pasadena.

Suzanne Muchnic, art writerSaturday, September 21, 2019Norton Simon was always a subject of speculation. In the art world, he became such a high-powered but unpredictable collector that observers couldn’t help wondering what he would buy—or sell—next. His courtships with museums and educational institutions led to pointed questions about what would become of his magnificent collection, even after he had installed the artworks at his own museum in Pasadena. Following Mr. Simon’s death in 1993, a collective sigh of relief greeted news that his artistic legacy would continue and that Southern California would not lose a cultural jewel. But then came conjecture about what, if anything, would change at the museum itself. In 2000, “Not Your Parents’ Norton Simon Museum,” a Los Angeles Times article by Suzanne Muchnic, offered a partial answer. Now, an expanded edition of Muchnic’s 1998 book, "Odd Man In: Norton Simon and the Pursuit of Culture," has brought the story up to date. In this lecture, she explores significant enhancements to the building and grounds, exhibition program, educational activities and public outreach, as well as the one thing that has remained the same, the stellar art collection.

Here at Convo By Design, we are dedicating another week to the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts. I have worked with this group going on three years now and they do such good work. Think about this for a moment, over 54 years producing showcase homes and raising over $23 million in the process for youth arts programs. We spoke last week about the architect on this project, Reginald Davis Johnson and the legacy he left behind, dappling Southern California with Spanish Revival projects. The city of Pasadena is a pretty special place, and while I am sure you are already familiar with Pasadena as home to the Tournament of Rose Parade, Rose Bowl, Jet Propulsion Lab, California Institute of Technology and the Norton Simon Museum, there are a few other things that might interest you. Pasadena has a rich architectural heritage covering multiple styles by modern masters including the Batchelder House, an American Craftsman masterpiece, built in 1909. Built by Ernest A. Batchelder, known as a trailblazer in the Arts and Crafts movement and his wife, Alice Coleman. Coleman, a musician and local piano teacher. Batchelder was also a filemaker and you can find his homes dotted with his signature tiles. He actually started a factory in his back yard. This is another example of Southern California’s rich architectural heritage and the best part, you can still go see it. As you can with the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts. If you are listening to this episode in May of 2018, the house is open until the 20th. After that, as always, please go to convobydesign.com or our YouTube channel to see videos from the house. This episode features Michael Wrusch of Michael Wrusch Designs in a stunning Family Room dripping with tech. The only room in the house that I noticed with a tv. Next we swing by the Dining Room to visit with Room At The Beach’s, Elizabeth Lamont and finally we check out the Au Pair’s Suite with Rosita Nazarian of RKN Design. Please remember, these interviews were recorded mere days before the showcase open and there is a ton going on in the background. Saws, heavy equipment and more. Thank you for listening. If you like what you hear, and I hope you do. Please go to Apple Podcasts and leave us a note and a 5 star rating. It helps new listeners find the podcast.
