Jane and I discuss preparing psychology majors to respond to the microaggressions they face due to misperceptions about the major (it is easy) and the value of the bachelor's degree in psychology (graduates won't be able to get a job). Jane shares the creative formats her positive psychology students use to present their five-year plans and the unique way she incorporates the APA Guidelines for the Undergraduate Psychology Major into her capstone course. Jane and I play “What Degree Does This Job Require?” and talk about ways students can engage in self-directed career exploration and professional development.

Wittenberg is a place, and while the names may change, the stories, personalities and experiences do not.   What are Timmy and Hud doing here?   Being on the other side of our Wittenberg student experience, we now know that there is no one right path. The mission of our time together each show is to help you, our audience, know that there are many different paths to purpose, to experience, to success. Your path to Wittenberg, was different. Your path after Wittenberg, as ours is, will be different too. On our journey together, we are passing the light from the stories and experiences our fellow alumni are sharing with us.   Our Guests for this episode are Wittenberg Head Coach Melissa Kolbe and Head Coach Matt Croci.   Following two completely different paths to become head coach of their basketball programs, Kolbe, had no idea what she wanted to Major in while at Witt (changed major 5 times), but knew she wanted to be a D1 Coach. Never a head coach, but a great Assistant. On the other hand, Croci knew he wanted to be an English Major while here at Witt, but had no idea what he wanted to do after he graduated.   Let us dive a little deeper into their experiences:   Kolbe had no interest in coming to Wittenberg, until she met with Coach (Pam) Evans, a Wittenberg Hall of Fame legend, on a Campus Visit arranged by her dad. As Coach Evans, a lovingly fierce presence sat and talked with Melissa, about where she would/could be both at Witt and in Coach Evans basketball program. After that conversation, Melissa fell in love. Upon graduation in 1999 as a Psychology Major, Melissa set her sights on being a D1 assistant basketball coach with little head coach aspirations. Crafting a path from scratch, Kolbe's path to coaching, culminating in assisting at University of Cincinnati, a division 1 college, with visibility to be the head coach there. Yet chose Witt, a DIII school…Why?...we will find out more together.   Croci, a '94 English major graduate from Witt, never thought he would turn his playing years into coaching years. A winning Basketball team brought Matt to Wittenberg and shaped Matt into the person he has become. Arguably one of the best Wittenberg basketball players, possibly best Division III players of all time, Croci upon graduation, and some other meanderings, became the assistant coach for Capital, then became head coach at Kenyon, now Witt. All small DIII liberal arts colleges in Central Ohio. With Coach Brown's retirement, Croci got the chance to return to his Alma Mater.   A few key facts to note: ·       Both came back to Witt, a DIII school, because Wittenberg Athletics recruits to win Championships. That is unusual to an extreme. ·       60% of Wittenberg Students are student-athletes, so 6 our of every 10 students is involved in an athletic endeavor. ·       D1 is an unbalanced experience. Both on the player and the coach side. ·       College athletics are changing. From NIL where D1 players can get paid but may ride the bench (vs DIII players who pay to play) and the transfer portal affecting all levels of the college athletic experience.   From admissions, to recruiting, to running summer camps, to being a mental health coach, to helping find jobs/internships, to helping Wittenberg itself Fundraise, to student development both in the classroom, and on the court. Coaching on the court, as it turns out, is just a small part of the job.   From here on out, we will find out together, the deeper answers on Why Witt? What happened while they were here? And how they navigated to success?

Transcending Weight Bias and Treating Eating Disorders using a Health at Every Size Model – Interview with Amelia MeachamDid you know that Eating Disorders affect at least 9% of the population worldwide? About 28.8 million Americans, will have an eating disorder in their lifetime. Eating disorders are also among the deadliest mental illnesses, second only to opioid overdose. About 26% of people with eating disorders attempt suicide. There are a variety of different ways of treating Eating Disorders. And today, joining me is Amelia Meacham, who is a Senior at The University of Puget Sound in Washington State. Amelia has a Psychology Major and a Religious Studies minor, she'll be graduating this May with her Bachelor of Arts Degree, and she is also my current practicum student. (Practicum = where Amelia and I create opportunities for her to learn about Eating Disorders and treatment using discussion, session observations, and other creative ways she can learn about individuals who struggle with Eating Disorders). And I have learned so much from Amelia! Today, Amelia will be sharing her thesis about how to treat eating disorders better using a “Health at Every Size” (HAES) model. She will also be my first podcast guest to illustrate what I hope to be a new, shorter format that I'll use with future guests in my next season of Calming the Chaos. Intro to Amelia – Tell us about yourself and about your studiesQuestions1. How did you get interested in treating eating disorders?2. What is a Weight based model of treatment?3. What is a HAES model of treatment? ASDAH has the trademark on HAES, so we'll use this definition in part from the ASDAH website:a. Definition: The Health At Every Size® Principles promote health equity, support ending weight discrimination, and improve access to quality healthcare regardless of size. More info at https://asdah.org/health-at-every-size-haes-approach/4. So what is a “Weight Bias?”5. What barriers to treatment happen when Doctors, Therapists and Dieticians have weight biases?a. Lack of perceived needb. Failure of clinicians to diagnose and refer appropriatelyc. Lack of treatment resources6. How does a HAES Approach to Eating Disorder Treatment help people transcend these barriers and move toward lasting recovery (vs. relapsing)?a. Weight neutral, holistic care …vs. Weight-based careb. Weight inclusive framework, including intuitive eating and self-compassion workc. Intuitive Eating Information can be found at http://www.intuitiveeating.org/d. A non-discriminative type of care that combats the weight-centered approach. The weight-centered approach utilizes the biased BMI measure and discriminates against those in bigger bodies, often intersecting with race, disability, and gender. HAES works to combat this discriminative care. Takeaway: Individuals and organizations that align with the HAES movement advocate against weight bias and discrimination in healthcare. This means that not only is HAES is helping individuals with eating disorders, but it is also combating the issues that influence the development of eating disorders.Resources: ASDAH = Association for Size Diversity and Health at www.asdah.orgNEDA = National Eating Disorders Association at www.nationaleatingdisorders.orgFEAST = Families Empowered and Supporting Treatment of Eating Disorders at www.feast-ed.orgANAD = National Association of Anorexia and Associated Disorders at www.anad.orgIAEDP = International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals at www.iaedp.com

What's Kevin Hopp's nature? I'm kind of loud, I'm kind of outgoing, I am an extrovert.”Kevin: “The nature of sales is you have to have a forward-leaning mindset.”Kevin: "Salespeople are the kind of people that say, okay, I'm gonna go make it happen today. You gotta have a little bit of that spunk, little bit of that pizzaz in your attitude. Otherwise, it's not gonna work out well for you. You can't sit on your ass and wait for anyone to do anything for you in sales. You have to do things. Even if you got inbound leads, you have to call them."Kevin: “AEs absolutely need to remember that going out and creating a connection with someone, in an absolutely cold environment with no preconceived notion on either side, full stop. I will argue that against anybody. It's harder than closing, it's harder than you know, complex deal management, it's harder than enterprise sales."Kevin: “It's a rare breed of sales leader that understands modern prospecting and also understands the sales closing aspect of it, the higher level sales management stuff.”Kevin: "I think that's one of the biggest problems is, Sales leaders don't see SDR as a long-term investment and they don't put the thought into, okay, well their day can't suck. Like how come the AEs are travelling all over the country and taking their Zoom calls, whatever and they just get to say, oh the leads aren't qualified and they miss quota and they don't get fired but a BDR, whose doing 300 calls a day and not converting as high as they could or should, gets axed."Kevin: "When you're cold calling, you should know who you're calling. You should know what role they play in their organization and why that's relevant, what business challenge you can solve for them, and then you need to have a specialized, very differentiated pitch for them." Kevin: “Cold-calling and top of funnel is about aligning business challenges and valuable outcomes, and having high-level discussions about that. And that's when sales starts.”Learn more about Kevin in the links below:Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCthQXJkNh0Bhj_8IQOGtiAwPodcast: https://pod.link/1601548363Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/khopp/Email - kevin@salesgig.comAlso, you can join our community by checking out @salescast.community. Realizing early on in her life that she was here to be a unique & innovative leader, Jess Nalu is passionate about reminding people who they truly are and all that is possible for them, when they DARE to LIVE Outrageously with full self-acceptance and authenticity… all while embodying pleasure as the pathway to freedom! Having studied Psychology, Yoga, and various other healing modalities, she realized each one's limitations, yet how they were all interconnected to healing in a more holistic way. This led Jess to create her unique & bespoke methodology, which is more aligned & integrative, and which MOST IMPORTANTLY addresses human sexuality (a topic too often ignored and/or unexpressed). She is all about breaking the taboo and letting it be FUN & Pleasurable! Her vision is to see people having fun, living in their power, and experiencing freedom & abundance in all aspects of their lives... including & most importantly in their sensuality! Sensuality touches every aspect of our lives and Jess teaches how it is intimately connected to everything from money, health, mental well-being, and the list goes on! As a passionate, innovative, courageous leader, she has devoted her life to helping people reclaim their wild & free spirit, so that women and men can move beyond living a life of mere survival, and into a life of thriving! She recognizes the missing links in the masculine/feminine dynamic and has been told her work is the "bridge" to helping people achieve balance, trust, safety, connection, communication, deep intimacy, and understanding... all whilst having fun in the process! Her clients describe her as "fiercely loving" "raw, intuitive, earthy,” Mama Bear" and a "visionary who sees what's possible for you, even when you can't, and helps you to have the courage to finally see and embody it in yourself as well." Personally, she loves: humor, playing, being in nature, practicing yoga, dancing, creating art, attending workshops, learning & expanding, traveling all over the world with her children, laughing with her family & friends, and overall enjoys living her life to the fullest all while exploring & embodying her delicious pleasure! My guest today is Irina Iskrenova. Irina is a former psychologist turned front-end engineer. In this episode, Irina unpacks how she switched careers from psychology to development. The career transition was not a trivial decision for her, Irina didn't want to leave her career in psychology, she loved the field and still does. After taking some time off after her master's degree to give herself some time to think about what she wanted, she decided to give programming a try. For Irina, the process of learning to code was not only about gaining technical skills, but it was also a period of deep introspection and reflection. A period when she had to make peace with the fact that she was going to become a psychologist and reconcile not seeing the career change as a failure but instead as a positive direction that her life had taken. Not one Dr. but two Doctors explain stress, that it can have an acute effect on the human body. When the body is stressed, muscles tense up, like Dr. Garcia you can probably attest to this, it's like for the first time when you left the wire in full Battle Rattle, your whole body gets tense, well that muscle tension is almost a reflex reaction to stress- the body's way of guarding against injury and pain, You know the Fight or Flight Syndrome also called hyperarousal or the acute stress response. However, when muscles are taut and tense for long periods of time, this may trigger other reactions of the body and even promote stress-related disorders- most popular ones are headache and migraines that are associated with chronic muscle tension especially in the area of the shoulders, neck, and head In addition to that, you can have Musculoskeletal pain in the low back and upper extremities that have been linked to stress, especially job stress. Now, there is already millions of American's with these stressor responses, in the coming weeks, you can add another 20 million to the list with the new unemployment numbers, so if my daughter, who is out there listening, or anyone a High School senior who hasn't chose a major for college, A Psychology Major would be a shoo-in for job security. Happy New Year everyone! And welcome back to the dHarmic evolution. Joining us on the first show of 2020 is Dr. Laura Mattia. So, sit back relax, get yourself a notebook and a pen, because this is going to be an action-packed, resourceful and informative podcast for all of you. Dr. Laura Mattia is a former corporate financial executive and has over 30 years of experience in Finance. She's also the founder of The Women's Money Empowerment Network – An educational Research program through the 501c 3 organization whose mission is to teach women to become financially engaged so that they can live life on their own terms, receive guidance and conduct research. Dr. Laura is also the author of Gender on Wall Street (A book uncovering opportunities for women in Financial services). She has currently dedicated her career in training the next generation of ethical, educated and inspired financial planners. Dr. Laura despite having Majored in Psychology, decided to take an MBA in finance and accounting in order to pay the house bills and support her family, this path would eventually lead her to the corporate world. It was while working as a woman in the executive world that she constantly got approached by women who requested help while handling financial matters in relation to issues such as divorce, workers' compensation, property management, etc. This would prove to be the root source of Dr. Laura's eureka moment, where she decided to shift into the role of a financial adviser. Having experienced a lot of gender-based difficulties and obstacles while working as an executive. Laura helps women who are currently in similar situations to successfully overcome such hurdles and have more fulfilling careers. The gender problem, Dr. Laura describes, is rooted deep in our societies and cultures. It subconsciously affects both genders. That's why we have so many women who have given in to less influential roles because they've bought into the stereotype of where women are supposed to be. Dr. Laura spends a lot of her free time running to keep fit. She has also been regularly meditating ever since she was introduced to the art by her father when she was 13. ‘'Is it nature or is it nurture? And as a Psychology Major and mother of four, I can absolutely tell you that a lot of things are natural.'' – Dr. Laura Mattia Timestamps [4:13] Dr. Laura briefly describes a recent Ted Talk she did. My friend Nathan Smith shares his journey growing up in Texas, learning all the messy church history in his youth, working with FairMormon to answer questions, serving in the California Fresno Mission with Cathy and Larry Gelwix as his Mission President, not really ‘fitting in’ during his successful mission where he reached people no one else could reach, becoming less active because of ‘social alienation,’ and now starting to attend Church again. Nathan wrote this post about his mission. It is helpful for me to read a post like this to help me understand how to help unique and needed members in our church feel they belong. https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10215415221908778&id=1084156888 Nathan is a unique and needed member of the Church. He has a deep understanding of our doctrine, Christ, and world religions. His blog can be found at: nathansmithbooks.com and his twitter is at: @NateSmithSNF. One of the most helpful parts of the podcast is his great relationship with his Mission President Larry Gelwix. Instead of requiring Nathan to become a ‘round peg’ so he could fit in, he embraced and valued Nathan’s ‘square peg’ Christlike attributes and gifts and used them to personally be teachable and help others come unto Christ. I hope all of us can become the kind of leaders the Gelwix’s are for some many of our members. Thanks for sharing your journey, Nathan. You are a great man with a wonderful future. I hope you find your way to stay in our Church. We need you. You can help us become the Body of Christ that we need to become.
