The new conservative think tank at the University of Texas, up until now referred to as the "Liberty Institute", has been formally named The Civitas Institute. Its first director will be UT alum Justin Dyer, who describes himself as a "conservative, straight out of central casting, pro-life evangelical". Adding to the misery of our early heat wave this year is Saharan Dust - along with diminished air quality, however, we should get some great sunsets. Three Austin chefs - Edgar Rico of Nixta Taqueria, Iliana de la Vega of El Naranjo, and Mashama Bailey of The Diner Bar and Grey Market - have been named James Beard winners. Uvalde developments: the narrative from law enforcement continues to pivot wildly, with various news outlets reporting inconsistent reads on whether Uvalde's school district and school police are cooperating with the investigating Texas Rangers. More consistent is the report that school police chief Pete Arredondo has failed to respond to requests for a follow-up interview - while also being sworn in to the Uvalde City Council in a private ceremony yesterday. The normally police-friendly population of Uvalde is now grappling with what appears to be a monumental police failure. Another story shift as investigators now say the door used by the shooter to access Robb Elementary School was not left propped open by a teacher, as was initially reported. Among several GoFundMe efforts, one seeks to support 11-year-old Miah Cerrillo, who is now dealing with trauma after surviving the ordeal, and another has been started by former Texas Longhorns and current Minnesota Vikings player Kris Boyd. The U.S. Supreme Court, in a curious mix of conservative and progressive justices, has blocked a Texas law that intended to punish social media platforms for removing political speech from taking effect. Competing, simultaneous political events on Saturday - a major abortion rights protest and a Donald Trump rally - have led to fears of unrest in downtown Austin. APD Chief Joe Chacon has reiterated that his department's policies have changed since the George Floyd protests in the summer of 2020, and pledges that his officers will keep public safety top of mind. Half of the Austin City Council's members could face an unexpected fall election, pending the outcome of an ongoing lawsuit. A contrast in school districts: Austin ISD students stage a mass walkout in defense of reproductive rights, while Eanes ISD creates a public database to track challenges over library books from offended parents. People continue flocking into Austin as they have for decades - but you might be surprised to learn that there are 15 U.S. metros currently outranking Austin in newcomer growth, including Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio. Retail space rent in the South Congress neighborhood has reached $150 per square foot - prices that are similar to storefronts in Manhattan. A new study from the National Education Association shows that, while Texas pays new teachers relatively well, our most experienced teachers are paid far less than the national average, lagging behind by $13,000 per year. A program launched last month to provide legal representation to low-income inmates at the Travis County Jail only made it nine days before exhausting its supply of staff. A busy live music weekend approaches, with the official Moody Center grand opening shows with George Strait and Willie Nelson Friday and Saturday, Friday shows with My Morning Jacket at Waterloo Park's Moody Amphitheater, Built to Spill at the Mohawk, and AJR at Germania Insurance Amphitheater. Saturday sees Hot Chip at Stubb's, The Wailers at the Haute Spot and Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats at Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park, and on Sunday a Willie Nelson birthday celebration at Luck Ranch with Bruce Robison, Robert Earl Keen, Ray Wylie Hubbard and more, and Tori Amos at ACL Live. The Austin City Council has postponed a vote on a proposed universal basic income or UBI program that is designed to provide a $1,000 monthly sustenance payment to several dozen low-income Austin families. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that a ban on some digital billboards by the city of Austin can stand, rejecting claims that the ban infringes upon free speech. An employee at the center of an exploitation scandal at a Bastrop shelter for trafficked girls was fired from a previous job for misconduct with children - The Refuge in Bastrop failed to check her records before hiring her. Even amidst recent struggles to keep up with its security pipeline, expansion plans are afoot for Austin Bergstrom International Airport that could add as many as 10 gates over the next two years. Texas added 4 million new residents between 2010 and 2020, the fastest growing of all U.S. states, and nearby Leander was the fastest growing city within the fastest growing state, doubling its population over that time. Yesterday's sudden reversal of masking mandates for air travelers by a federal judge, dictating a dropping of that requirement by the Transportation and Safety Administration, has led to most major airlines declaring masks optional for their staff and customers. Austin Bergstrom International Airport, Capitol Metro transit services and Uber have also followed suit and will no longer require masks. Citing high demand and a budgetary shortfall of almost 50 million dollars per year, Austin Energy is considering raising its base rate by 7.6%, which would amount to an average of about 15 dollars per month on your bill. The Austin City Council is set to vote on Thursday on a one-year pilot program for the city's first universal basic income or guaranteed income initiative, which for the trial year would provide $1,000 per month to 85 local families. Alex Jones' Infowars network has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after losing several defamation lawsuits related to false reporting on the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting is seen as a legal maneuver to keep it afloat - notably Jones himself has not personally filed for bankruptcy. The new Moody Center at the University of Texas opens tomorrow with the first of two nights with John Mayer - 60 days per year at the new facility are reserved for UT sports and other university-related functions, the remaining 305 days are open for live entertainment. And more beautiful spring weather today with a high in the upper 70's is to be followed by several days with elevated rain chances - 40% on Wednesday, 45% on Thursday and more of the same thru the weekend.

Local cinema hero Richard Linklater says he's never seen any pay from his landmark film "Dazed And Confused". Austin Community College has voted not to raise its tuition and fees for the ninth straight year. The Backstreet Boys pandemic-interrupted reunion tour is back on and coming to Austin this June. And cooler temps are expected for the next couple of days after a record-shattering 96-degree Tuesday - a wind advisory is in effect as well.

Three more protesters have filed suit against the City, claiming brain injuries resulting from police crowd control measures during the George Floyd protests. Drought conditions in the Austin area are worsening - Central Texas is "starving for rain". After a second straight overcrowded Monday at Austin Bergstrom International Airport yesterday, ABIA officials and TSA spokespersons are at odds on the causes of the congestion. Public school advocates are sounding the alarm on the enormous amount of money the chronically-underfunded Austin Independent School District pays into the Texas "Robin Hood" recapture program - an amount now higher than that raised annually via property taxes by the City of Austin. Texas Longhorns men's basketball was eliminated from the NCAA tournament last night by Purdue, final score 81-71, while Texas women's hoops have made the Sweet 16 for their second straight season in a convincing win over Utah - the Frank Erwin Center's final event before closing officially. The women play again on Friday, opponent remains to be determined. Austin FC managed to fight their way to a draw with the Seattle Sounders yesterday, final score 1-1. There was a bomb threat at Austin Bergstrom International Airport overnight last night, resulting in several delayed or diverted flights - it's been cleared and the airport is operating normally this morning. The City of Austin fails in an appeal against a lawsuit claiming it did not provide sufficient notice to property owners about impending code changes - while a study finds that Californians may not be solely responsible for skyrocketing home costs after all. In 2015, the 40th National Collegiate Taekwondo Association Championships were hosted at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware. Head Coach Joe Van, and Team Co-Captains Sherry Tucci and Daniel Yun took a team of 19 student-athletes to compete in what would be the biggest team Texas Taekwondo fielded up to that point. Coach Mike sits down with Sherry Tucci, Jonathan Ceron, and Hector Cruz as they recap the challenges (and fun moments) that were had in and out of the ring. From Houston, Texas, Jonathan Ceron started training in taekwondo during high school at his nearby local gym. Jonathan joined Texas Taekwondo as a freshman in 2012 and competed at collegiates all four years of his undergraduate years. From 2012-2014 he was part of Texas Taekwondo Team Select. He now lives in Austin, Texas where he works for the Transportation Security Agency at Austin Bergstrom International Airport. Frank Dixon was sworn in as the Chief of Police on Oct. 11, 2018. Prior to coming to the City of Denton, Chief Dixon was an Assistant Chief of Police in Austin, Texas. In his 23 years of service in Austin, Chief Dixon managed the South Patrol Bureau, Austin/Bergstrom International Airport, and Special Operations, which consisted of SWAT, Bomb Squad, Patrol K-9, and Air Support. Chief Dixon's other assignments during his career included, SWAT, Homicide, K-9, Gang Suppression/Major Crimes, Narcotics, and Uniformed Patrol. He also led the department Special Response Team, who deployed to Cleveland, OH for the RNC in 2016, and the Presidential Inauguration in January 2017. Chief Dixon is a United States Marine Corps veteran and obtained his Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from Lamar University. He is also a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum's Senior Management Institute for and the Major Cities Chiefs Association Police Executive Leadership Institute.

Welcome to episode 15 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. While I usually try to be extremely professional on my podcast, this episode from the Friday night Kickoff Party for the Texas Bitcoin Conference may expose a slightly different side of me. I went straight from Austin–Bergstrom International Airport to Maria's Taco Express, where the party was held. I arrived to the sound of live music and a large patio area completely packed with Bitcoiners. I made my way through the crowd and checked in with the very nice Linda Snow. She handed me drink tickets and offered to keep an eye on my bags, which I appreciated. I went to the outdoor bar and ordered a beer and a shot of tequila. Hey, this was a party, and I was ready to have fun! But because only drinks were available at the outdoor register, and I was in a hurry to join the party, I skipped going inside to order food. I didn't think about how long it had been since I had eaten, or how much an empty stomach might intensify the effects of the alcohol I was consuming. Lesson learned! Before I knew it, I had my phone out and I started interviewing every friendly face I bumped into. That ended up being a team from A.I.
