Frankie McNair is an up-and-coming Australian comedian who won best comedy award at Melbourne Fringe 2018 and best newcomer and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2022. Her critically acclaimed one-woman show, ‘An Intimate Evening with Tabitha Booth' is coming to Q Theatre – starting tomorrow evening – and runs until July 6th. She plays ‘medicated lounge singer', Tabitha Booth in an intimate evening of unhinged comedy. McNair joined Tim Beveridge on Newstalk ZB's Holiday Breakfast. “I won one of the biggest awards in Melbourne and I started panicking – thinking, I don't know how to follow this up!” McNair describes her 50s, Munroe era character: “I do go for that Trans-Atlantic, old-school Hollywood accent.” LISTEN ABOVE. A while back, Tim came to London to perform at the Isokon building in Belsize Park, and I managed to catch up with him to record this podcast. As a small boy in the Seventies, Tim quietly absorbed the lessons of modernist architecture. He remembers accompanying his parents to a dinner party at a modern house, where the sound of laughter reverberated around the circular lounge; his career seems to have been about trying to recapture that heady moment. In 2003, he bought his own modernist house in Sydney, a move which, he says, ‘changed my life for the better'. His fascination with architecture and design had previously been a solitary pursuit, but the house provided a way to meet like-minded people and a launchpad for his TV career. Tim is really great company, and we talk about all sorts of things. He explains how he's an outlier in his family, and what it felt like to perform on stage for the first time. He tells me about the day the Beastie Boys came to visit and wouldn't leave, why he'd rather learn to be a builder than go through the stress of another renovation project, and why he swears by the uplifting effects of tinted moisturiser. This episode was recorded in person in Brick Lane, London. For more: Visit The Modern House website to see images of the spaces discussed in this episodeDiscover more about Tim Ross and his live showsSee more of his Sydney homeProducer: Hannah PhillipsEditing: Oscar CrawfordGraphic Design: Tom Young and Ben TuckerMusic: Father Hosted on Acast. This week Nicola and Di chat with the multi-talented and hilarious Wendy Harmer. Wendy has had an incredible career as a journalist, comedian, radio show host, TV personality, and author. Her latest book Lies My Mirror Told Me is a frank, funny and fearless memoir that tells Wendy's story of overcoming adversity to become one of Australia's most loved entertainers on stage, in print, television and broadcasting. In this conversation, Wendy opens up about her difficult childhood - what it was like when her mum walked out on the family when Wendy was just 10 years old, how her father was left to raise 4 children and the fun and mischief they used to have when he would go away for the weekend and leave them alone in the house. Wendy shares about her experiences of being bullied at school because of her double cleft lip and palate, which she had until she was able to have facial surgery as a teenager. Despite this challenge, her father was determined that it wouldn't hold her back and always encouraged and pushed Wendy to be out in front. He even wanted her to be the first female Prime Minister of Australia. We hear the remarkable story of Wendy's career, how she went from journalism, to comedy, to radio - and became both the first female presenter on commercial breakfast radio and the highest paid woman on Australian radio. There are so many hilarious stories that Wendy shares throughout this chat - including that time she was flown to LA to cover the Oscars as a breastfeeding mother - you'll have to stay tuned to hear what happened that night, and I'm sure you'll be in stitches like we were. One of New Zealand's favourite comedians, Heath ‘Chopper' Franklin is back from his break. The Australian comic is returning from his three year break with a bang, back in New Zealand with fifteen shows as well as his set in the International Comedy Festival. His tour kicks off today, as Chopper's 'Not Here To F*ck Spiders', the name of his tour setting the tone for the show. His iconic persona ‘Chopper' was based off the real life criminal in the 2000 movie by the same name, his career taking off from there. “I watched it when I was... early twenties, and you know, like a lot of the movies you watch when you get to that age, you just sort of watch it and then you absorb it slowly.” Franklin recounts hanging out with friends at parties and, prompted by friends going off to sleep early, doing an impression of the character. He then brought this through into the sketch comedy shows he was doing at the time. The movie came out in the 2000s, and Franklin told Mike Hosking that there's a level of freedom in people no longer knowing the original story. “I find the thing that kind of weighs me down the most is, especially when I go to Melbourne where they're quite parochial and proud of even, you know, even the violence of their criminals, that yeah. You know, there's a constant kind of reference between what I do and what he would have done.” “So I really love coming to New Zealand where I kind of get to define what the character does, and I get to kind of step out of that shadow.” He was never trying to be a biographer, he told Hosking. “I was just a guy who liked a movie and made a dumb sketch.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Big news coming out of Mates HQ today! A lucky member of the team has scored themselves a smooch. We're heading to the land of magical creatures today! Because we've found some rare (and most definitely, 100% real, not at all under scrutiny) audio of Bigfoot, direct from Ohio! Which of course leads us into a chat about the mystical gremlins that clearly live in Nikki's microphone and some fairies that live inside Harley's daughter's nose... Yes this is incredibly serious and top shelf content. Plus, if you're feeling a bit down today, we've got a bit of a pep talk coming your way! A genius woman has decided to troll her husband by giving him a whole heap of 'punny' gifts after he's gotten a vasectomy. So of course we jump onboard this train and chat all about whether it's time for Mr Breen to get one himself! Plus, apparently some people are comparing being kicked in the nether-regions to child birth! Which Harley's son Walter decided to help test that theory on his Dad. And just your friendly reminder that we can't quite remember what day it is today, so if you see us out in the wild and reference something from the show, there's a ginormous chance we will have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what you're talking about! We may be too old for Splendour, but we're not too old for Tik Tok apparently because that's where all of our stories are from today! A 22 year old in the UK has compiled a list of reasons why she doesn't want children, so we decided to run them past our resident child-having expert, Harley Breen, to see if they're worthy or not. Plus there's a lot of reasons you can use to attempt to get out of a speeding fine, but we reckon we might've found the absolute worst! Happy Friday legends! And happy start of Splendour to those who celebrate, like our very own Nikki Britton. Speaking of... are we too old to be wading through mud at a young persons music festival? Plus JLO and Ben Affleck are hitched! So let's have a chat about ex's... Would you go back there? Could you work with them again? Believe it or not, yes, we do ACTUALLY stay on topic today! We're going on an adventure today... to Harley's brother's farm in regional QLD. Harley's been helping out, driving trucks and finding our amazing listeners. Welcome back to another epic week of talking about stuff with your mates. Today, Nikki lets us into the world of painting objects while being absolutely off your face Drink Responsibly And how she's ended up being the therapist of a group of middle aged women. Plus Harley's out on the farm, in his element might we add, and yet he's managed to run into Elvis AND David Bowie! (pssst not really, but if you listen to the episode, you'll get the joke and it'll be funny) And we can't have an episode without talking about lubrication... specifically the lubrication of your calves so you don't get chafe when you're wearing gum boots... We're taking a trip down memory lane today and reminiscing about our first gigs. Nikki's was a RAW comedy talent show that one of her friends signed her up for! Meanwhile Harley's first gig had something to do with rehearsing in his Dad's church and randomly performing on the set of Scooby Doo the movie, all while Isla Fisher made some VERY suggestive comments... Happy Long Weekend (for most of the country) you absolute legends!!! Hope you're strapped in because todays wild ride of an episode doesn't slow down anytime soon. Harley bloody Breen is back, and still a little bit under the weather, but raring to go! He's here to let us know how bad this damn flu is! Covid who?? Plus we chat about good ol Queen Lizzy and her jubilee. And Nikki just HAS to get something off her chest. And let's just say, we can all kind of relate to what she's going through with her mum right now! Nikki Britton is back on the road with the Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow and she's coming to us live from the people's republic of Western Australia! As they say, you learn something new everyday, well on this particular day Nikki learnt that there's one country town that doesn't want ANYONE stopping by to use its toilets. Shoutout to anyone listening from regional Australia, we really do absolutely adore you! Happy Friday legends! What does a clouded leopard and a drop bear have in common? Keep listening to find out! Also, if you've got a trivia night coming up and there's some questions about big cats, we expect a written thank you because this episode has you covered with big cat facts. Plus the Bogan Nostradamus is back and he's joined by his offsider when we're talking about election results. And Harley's youngest has finally got an exceptional grasp on the English language... We all saw Scotty from marketing take a tumble. We all knew we were going to make jokes about it... So here we are. In case you have been living under a rock, Scott Morrison accidentally crash tackled a small child during soccer training on the campaign trail the other day. The kid in question is all A-okay so we're here to make you giggle about it. Plus the Mucklord, aka our producer, has been involved in an accident of her own. Which leads us to recall some of our most stupid, weird and honestly just wild injury stories. We're talking Nikki snapping her ankle in a foreign country while being comforted by a chain smoking Dr. And Harley forgetting stranger danger and jumping in some random persons car while injured. Giants, this is episode #84 – today's guest is an Australian Comedian, Writer, TV and movie Actor – and Dancing With The Stars Australia – 2020 winner. Winning the mirrorball trophy and $50,000 for her charity, the Safe Steps Family Violence and Support Centre. She is in fact the first Comedian I've interviewed on the show. And has brought so much joy and laughter to millions of households. She won the Best Supporting Actress at the AACTA awards (The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) for her role as Dolly Faraday in the acclaimed ABC1 drama ‘The Beautiful Lie'. She's also starred in the award-winning TV series ‘Laid', Logie Award winning drama ‘Offspring' and in all five seasons of Working Dog's show ‘Utopia', for which she won another AACTA Award for Best Performance in a Television Comedy in 2015. Comedy audiences would also know her from her appearances on Spicks and Specks, The Project and is a regular on the hilarious show; ‘Have You Been Paying Attention?' one of my favourites. Internationally, she's been a guest on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Chelsea Lately and The Rob Brydon Show. In 2016 she also co-created, co-wrote and starred in the smash hit comedy Rosehaven with Luke McGregor, for which she won the 2017 award for Best Performance in a Television Comedy at the AACTAs, has been nominated twice for Most Popular Actress at the Logies, as well as two nominations for her writing at the AWGIEs (Australian Writers Guild). Season five of Rosehaven by the way, is out now – definitely give it a watch, it is brilliant. Some of the topics we spoke about include: How she grew up, including her big break Her creative writing process How she manages the different hats (on and off the stage) And very candidly and vulnerably, shares some of her experiences with anxiety, depression and all things mental health and wellness from her vantage point.. So if you're someone that's interested in unpacking the journey of a high-performing, multi-faceted creative professional, in a way that might help you forge your own creative identity – and want to listen to something both funny and real, then this episode is for you.
