Dr. Carole Keim talks about baby furniture in today's episode. She summarizes the furniture needed for your baby as a place for your baby to sleep, a place to set your baby down in each room, some stuff to care for your baby's everyday needs, stuff for travel, and some babyproofing items. But there are so many things on the market, how can you know what's useful and what isn't? That's what this episode is about.Dr. Keim talks about cribs and how 3-in-1 cribs are very useful but for the first 12 months of life, you don't need that crib. You need a bassinet. So you can wait to buy the crib. She talks about what travel bassinets to invest in, what crib sheets work best, and even what kind of light works best in your baby's room. For every one of your baby's needs, Dr. Keim sorts through the furniture you need and when you actually need it, advising on what things can wait and what things aren't even important. This guide will ensure you get the most useful things first and help you sort through all the furniture on offer. In this episode:Newborn sleepcribbassinettravel bassinetsheetsDon't get: any mesh for the crib, bumpers, pillows, blankets, white noise machine, blackout curtains, music for baby to fall asleep to, anything that hangs over the crib Furniture parents will usegliderBoppy nursing pillow / nursing pillowchanging tablebaby monitor - video type / walkie-talkie typeDon't get: baby bathtub, mobilePlaces for baby to sitmamaroobaby swingbouncy chairexersaucerjohnny jumpupbumbo seatDon't get: activity mat, baby loungers that are a round or u-shaped pillow (suffocation risk), don't leave babies unattended in any of these Travelplaypen portable seat with tray for feedingmuslin baby blanketsBaby carriers - ring sling / clip carrierPortable changing padDon't get: playpen with bassinet Babyproofing itemsoutlet coverswall anchorsbaby gates - stairs and poolstable cornersother items - cabinet locks, doorknob covers, toilet seat locksDon't get: those backpack things with a pillow behind their head for in case they fall backwards As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.Dr. Keim has extensively researched the information presented in this episode. SHOW NOTES: In this episode, learn about three kinds of safety tips: keeping kids safe by babyproofing your home, keeping fabrics and surfaces safe from red wine stains, and keeping your back safe by installing a heated driveway to eliminate snow shoveling! Plus, hear answers to a wide range of additional homeowner questions from Money Pit callers! - Child Safety: Baby on the way? Keep kids safe with important tips for babyproofing your home. - Stain Removal: After a merlot mishap or a cabernet crisis, here's how to remove red wine stains. - Heated Driveways: If you've had enough of shoveling snow, you may want to invest in a heated driveway. Q & A: - Floor Beams: Wendy's renovating her old house and gets advice on how to add support to the beams and plywood under her kitchen floor. - Driveway Mold: Mold keeps growing in the shady area of the driveway. We suggest a mildewcide product with a residual effect that David can easily apply. - Crawlspace Moisture: Irena's house is on a slope, with rainwater coming into the crawlspace. We explain how to install a French drain to intercept the runoff and redirect the water around the house. - Heating and Cooling: The upstairs rooms are too hot and the downstairs rooms are too cold! Jessie should check the airflow at all the registers and return ducts, adjust the dampers, and consider adding a supplemental system. - Cleaning Tile: Old bathroom tile has lost its shine. Sherry's tiles may actually have a matte finish without a glaze, but we have tips for cleaning the tiles to improve their appearance. - Light Dimmers: Why do the lights flicker when they're dimmed? Tim should make sure the LED bulbs are listed as dimmable and look into a certain line of dimmer switches. - Electrical Spark: Ming's automatic closet door light sometimes sparks. That's an immediate fire hazard that needs to be replaced immediately! - Service Contracts: Who's responsible for water lines that run from the street to your home? Manny shouldn't be fooled by the scare tactics he gets in the mail for unnecessary service contracts. - Vandalism: A former tenant poured cement down the drains of Bonnie's rental property! The repairs would be covered by insurance, but that's vandalism that also warrants criminal charges. ASK A QUESTION: Need help with your own home improvement or décor question? We'd love to help! While being on bed rest might be necessary for you and your baby physically, your mind can wander and get caught up in all the "what ifs." A question I faced and I know many other women have faced is: "What's going to happen to my career." It can create so much extra anxiety and you don't deserve that. So toady I'm joined by Arianna Taboada, a maternal health consultant, she helps women construct their maternity leave plan and return to work. We're going to talk about how you can babyproof your career, so you can cut down on some of that stress and anxiety.
Bio You might be surprised to learn that my entrance into maternity leave planning and coaching did NOT begin with my own arrival at motherhood. I had a decade of experience as a maternal health professional, but when I set out to plan my maternity leave as a self-employed consultant, I found…a whole lot of nothing. I found some blog posts of what other women did and what worked for their business. I read about what entrepreneurs in billion dollar companies did for their leave (oh hey Marisa Mayer!) I came across dozens of generic “guides” that included sage wisdom like “plan ahead” without delving into much more. What you will learn in this episode: Learn more about Arianna's background, how she started her business When is good time for baby when you run your own business? On today's podcast, Liz, Monica and Lian offer a Satellite Sisters Fall TV Preview, an App review and more news of the Snoopy comeback. Lian steps in for Urban Nana this weekend and hosts Julie's son, daughter-in-law and baby Josephine. But first there's some babyproofing to be done and some Martha Stewart guest room standards to be applied. It's all starts with the floors. Liz describes what she's up to this week - "the best week of the year on my job" means she just sits around and watches TV all week. Yes, people actually do that for a living but not usually her. She's happy to report that the new Rob Lowe/Fred Savage comedy The Grinder is hee-larious and kinda heartwarming. She also got to meet Snoopy, who is hard at work on his new Peanuts movie for the end of the year. Lian was not kidding on Tuesday's show. The beagle's on a major comeback trail. In other media news, major Satellite Sisters congratulations to Pitch Perfect 2, for being the #1 movie of the weekend. The actual words in the Wall Street Journal headline are PITCH PERFECT 2 TROUNCES ITS COMPETITION . Take that, Mad Max. And kudos to Mindy Kaling and The Mindy Project for moving to Hulu. We'll be there for you, sister. Glad we could save your show. That's what sisters are for. Monica announces that Uber has finally come to Portland, Oregon. Now she wants to know how it actually works. Plus, she's got questions about some other new apps including Airpnp, which Lian and Liz agree sounds awful for all involved. Good health news: even walking for two minutes during your work day is good for you, so Monica's on it. Bad health news: Are twitchy eyelids a medical thing, a stress thing or not a thing at all? Liz needs to know. Does it have anything to do with this news about stress? On the Satellite Sisters Facebook group, there are discussions about skorts - both pro and con.
Dr. Matt Yuknis and Dr. Laura Thieme are our guest doctors for this episode, and they brought some great information to the program. In health news, we discuss a new comercial on the air which warns families against the dangers of anaphylaxis, but what is anaphylaxis and who is at risk? Dr. Matt has the answers. Next, Dr. Thieme discusses circumcision. It's a personal decision, but Dr. Thieme discusses what it is, and some of the pros and cons. In parenting tips, we discuss how to babyproof a home for a crawling infant, and finally Dr. Matt discusses the newborn screen that every baby has done within the first few days of life. We also have the answer to last month's medical trivia question which was "What is the longest recorded attack of hiccups?"
