All the links - LINKTR.EE/BARBARAFAISON On Thursday last week, I was out running errands before my part-time job at the Stockbridge local library and I had a taste for Cracker Barrel pancakes so I decided I would stop there before I went to work. I didn't have to be at work until 4 PM so I was having a late breakfast. As I walked up to the hostess stand another woman walked up exactly at the same time. We greeted the hostess, and said one when she asked how many people were in our party. She said she would seat us at the same time and we followed her into the restaurant. The other woman being seated turned around to me and said something like do you feel weird like me, when you eat by yourself? I don't mind eating alone, it gives me an opportunity to do my word search or read or just be. I said “Do you wanna join me for lunch?”We sat down, and Sandy and I had a delightful lunch/breakfast. Interestingly enough, the food inspectors were there so our food was delayed by quite a few minutes which gave us even more time to chat and enjoy our adventure. I asked Sandy a question and she continued sharing information about herself. At one point, she did say I've been talking a lot, tell me something about you.We chatted about work, family, and life in general. When the food finally came, I was able to eat a little bit before I had to leave to go to work. I said my goodbyes and smiled at Adventure #1.At the library we have monthly programs for adults, young adults, and children. On this day, we were doing Mahjong. One of the games I play online is Mahjong, it is different playing on the computer than in person. In person there needs to be four people, and I volunteered if they needed additional people/staff for the program.I was really excited when they needed a fourth. I sat down and learned how to play American Mahjong. I really enjoyed it, it's stimulating and fun. We played three games and although I didn't win, I had a blast. Adventure #2 complete. On Saturday afternoon, my husband, TD and I drove down to Albany, Georgia, my hometown. We attended game night as part of my 45th high school reunion activities. I don't remember the last one I went to, I know it's been about 10 years. Thanks to Facebook and Instagram I have several classmates that follow me and join me on my breath breaks and some may even listen to my podcast. Lol. Thanks to all that do!It was a blast! We played games, laughed, had school trivia, food, and fellowship. I am so glad I went. Adventure #3!Lunch with a stranger, playing a new game in person, Mahjong, and going to my 45th High School reunion. And we stopped by the Bass Pro Shop in Macon, Ga on the way back… that was sort of an adventure, so I'll call it 3.5 adventures in four days! lolDid I start the week planning those adventures? I did not... I just let life do what life does... and I said yes!
Another year, another scrapbook. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is back on his quest to learn the origins of his father's legendary NASCAR career, and in this season of Becoming Earnhardt, he is unpacking the 1980 season. With the help of some family scrapbooks and his personal collection of racing artifacts, Dale Jr. is seeking to gain a deeper understanding of who Dale Earnhardt was before his seven championships and numerous wins.In the first episode of this season, we set the scene of 1980, both in the world of motorsports and the world at large. The star of our story, Dale Earnhardt, is fresh off winning the NASCAR Cup Rookie of the Year in 1979, ready to take on the mainstays of stock car racing with his Osterlund Racing crew. His path to stardom goes through the legends of the day, such as Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, and David Pearson, but with veteran crew chief Jake Elder atop the pit box, Dale is feeling confident in his chances. The goal is a season championship ring, but before he can get there, he will have to weather the storms of competition, attrition, and personality. This episode of Becoming Earnhardt is brought to you by Bass Pro Shops. With the scene set, it's off to the races in 1980. The NASCAR Cup Series heads out to Riverside, California, to begin the season, and sophomore Dale Earnhardt is hoping to improve his road course performance. He will, in fact, finish runner-up to Darrell Waltrip, who, after a narrow loss in the 1979 points race, is regarded as a championship favorite for this year. Dale caps his successful West Coast trip off with a new season sponsor and a contract extension with Rod Osterlund, and he's understandably feeling at the top of his game.He rolls that confidence into Daytona Beach, where he shows his first glimpses of supernatural ability on the superspeedway high banks. He makes a last lap pass on the outside of Darrell Waltrip to pick up his first victory at the track, the Busch Clash. But when all the marbles are on the line in the Daytona 500, he has to go toe to toe with Buddy Baker and the fastest stock car in the country: Waddell Wilson's Gray Ghost. This episode of Becoming Earnhardt is brought to you by Bass Pro Shops. Luke Bryan – “That's My Kind of Night” ⭐️ 1.9 / 10 Label: Cliché Hat Records, a Division of Bud Light SoundsIf a monster truck rally had sex with a Bass Pro Shops flyer during an Axe Body Spray commercial, the baby would be “That's My Kind of Night.” And that baby would grow up to wear cargo shorts year-round and call every woman “ma'am,” regardless of age.Luke Bryan, country music's reigning fratboy-in-chief, delivers this track like he's double-fisting a Natty Light and reading lyrics off the back of a hunting permit. It's less a song and more a checklist of things a 12-year-old thinks are cool: trucks, beer, girls in painted-on jeans, trucks again, the moonlight, catfish dinners, and did we mention trucks?Musically, it's a country song in the same way a microwave burrito is Mexican cuisine – technically accurate, deeply offensive, and likely to make you question your life choices. The beat is a Frankenstein's monster of pop-country gloss and trap-lite drum loops, which means it will either make you dance or commit a minor crime in a Walmart parking lot.Lyrically, Bryan sounds like he dared himself to cram every bro-country trope into a single three-minute yeehaw. "I got that real good feel good stuff up under the seat of my big black jacked-up truck" – which is exactly the kind of sentence you hear before someone revs an engine at a red light and then crashes into a Chili's.And don't worry, he rhymes “corn” with “horn” and “party” with… “party.” Twice. Shakespeare is shaking in his boots. You get the feeling that Luke Bryan wrote this on a napkin after doing shots of Fireball with the Duck Dynasty guys. And that napkin then somehow won a CMA award.Recommended if you like:Mud for recreational purposesSongs that think “fishing” is a personalityThe idea of consent, but not the practiceFinal thought: This isn't a song. 1000 fishing flies and an ad that failed turned a furniture store family into a sporting goods store empire. Way to go Cabela's. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So, here's one of those. [No Bull RV Ad] Stephen Semple: Hey, David, we're going to do something different here. Dave Young: Okay. I'm all ears. Stephen Semple: Because you have a special history with this company. So we're going to talk about Cabela's. Dave Young: Okay. Okay. Stephen Semple: Because of the fact that Cabela's started in your little town in Nebraska. Dave Young: Kind of. Kind of. Stephen Semple: Kind of. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: So we're going to do this completely unrehearsed, Dave running with things, and I'll fill in certain- Dave Young: You're going to Google dates and names in the background? Stephen Semple: Yeah, that's what we're going to do. So let's give that a roll. Cabela's is an interesting story. Dave Young: It really is, and it still is a brand, right? It's still around, but it's owned by the Bass Pro Shop guy, Johnny, whatever his name is. I didn't get to know him because that's a Missouri thing. So Sidney, Nebraska- Stephen Semple: We don't like talking about those people. Dave Young: Well, he came in and bought it up and saved the company. That's part of the story. But Sidney, Nebraska was the home of Cabela's, the family and the corporate headquarters for years and years. It started, though, in a town about 30 miles away, a town of Chappell, Nebraska. Stephen Semple: Right. Yes. Dave Young: 1962. Stephen Semple: Well actually, you're really good. According to what I have here is December, 1961, but 1962 is a month later. Dave Young: Yeah. '62 is what was always on their logo. Stephen Semple: Okay, cool. Cool. Dave Young: And the shirts you could buy, like Cabela's EST 1962, but yeah, December '61. So Chappell, Nebraska, their dad is in the furniture business, and- Stephen Semple: I didn't realize he was in the furniture business. Okay, cool. Dave Young: Yeah, and the story. As I recall, is that two of the sons, Dick and Jim, well, at least it was Dick that went to the furniture show with dad in Chicago, where you see all the furniture that you're going to buy for your store and you make deals with the manufacturers and all that stuff arrives then over the course of the next year. Well, he found a company that he bought like a thousand Chinese-made fishing flies. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: Little flies for fly fishing. Stephen Semple: Right. And what I have here is it cost him like 45 bucks. Dave Young: Oh, yeah. Yeah. Dirt cheap. Didn't know what he was going to do with them, but he bought a thousand of them and brought them home. Takes out a little ad in a Wyoming hunters' newspaper or newsletter. All right? And he- Stephen Semple: Sports Afield is the name of the- Dave Young: Sports Afield, and the ad, if... So yeah, gosh, now I feel like I'm doing this story and Stephen's fact checking me, live. So this is, I think, from an ad writing perspective and a business making an offer, this is actually the pivotal moment in the genesis of the Cabela's story is that they ran this ad in Sports Afield and nothing happened. Stephen Semple: Right. I think they got one response or something like that? Dave Young: Yeah, but it was the offer. The offer was buy, I think it was 12 hand-tied fishing flies for a dollar,

Chris Holman welcomes Carson Patten, Vice President, Retail Advisor, Martin Commercial Properties, and Samantha Le, Senior Associate, Retail Advisor, Martin Commercial Properties, This discussion is the third of three with Martin Commercial Properties team, and focuses on their Retail Advisory. These were the questions they cover in this conversation: Retail Advisory: Retail vacancy rates have dropped slightly despite economic pressures—what types of retail businesses are thriving, and what's driving this resilience? We've seen significant growth in build-to-suit developments. How are developers and retailers working together to create spaces that meet evolving consumer demands? With the influx of new eateries and some notable closures, how do you foresee the balance between new openings and vacancies playing out in the next year? These interviews grow out of a series of three recent reports recently released by the company. You can access them at: https://martincommercial.com/marketinsights/ . Retail '24 Market Insights: "RETAIL ‘24 Market Insights Greater Lansing Area, Michigan | H2 2024" The Greater Lansing Area retail market experienced significant changes in H2 2024, with the vacancy rate increasing from 13.8% in H1 2024 to 16.4%. This rise was largely due to the closures of Rite Aid and Big Lots stores, which created new opportunities for smaller retailers. Notable developments include Dollar Tree securing a site in Haslett, Burlington and Best Buy consolidating their leases in the West Submarket, and several popular eateries and retailers planning to open new locations across various submarkets. The East Submarket, the largest retail sector in the area, saw vacancies rise to 12.8%, driven by store closures but balanced by strong leasing activity from retailers like Dollar Tree and Lansing Duck Pin. The West Submarket also faced increased vacancies due to store consolidations, but it is attracting significant interest from major retailers such as Bass Pro Shops, which is set to open an 85,000 SF store in Delta Crossings. The North Submarket experienced a decrease in vacancies, becoming a sought-after destination with new restaurants and entertainment venues like Dave & Buster's and Cooper's Hawk Winery. Despite the South Submarket having the highest vacancy rate at 29.4%, it is witnessing a revival with new fast food establishments like Dunkin' and Wingstop. Overall, the Greater Lansing retail market saw a net absorption of -216,877 SF, indicating a decrease in occupied space. Our book is: Big Box USA: The Environmental Impact of America's Biggest Retail Stores (UP of Colorado, 2024) which presents a new look at how the big box retail store has dramatically reshaped the US economy and its ecosystems in the last half century. From the rural South to the frigid North, from inside stores to ecologies far beyond, this book examines the relationships that make up one of the most visible features of late twentieth-century and early twenty-first-century American life. The rise of big box retail since the 1960s has transformed environments on both local and global scales. Almost everyone has explored the aisles of big box stores. The allure of “everyday low prices” and brightly colored products of every kind connect shoppers with a global marketplace. Contributors join a growing conversation between business and environmental history, addressing the ways American retail institutions have affected physical and cultural ecologies around the world. Essays on Walmart, Target, Cabela's, REI, and Bass Pro Shops assess the “bigness” of these superstores from “smokestacks to coat racks” and contend that their ecological impacts are not limited to the footprints of parking lots and manufacturing but also play a didactic role in educating consumers about their relationships with the environment. A model for historians seeking to bring business and environmental histories together in their analyses of merchant capital's role in the landscapes of everyday life and how it has remade human relationships with nature, Big Box USA is a must-read for students and scholars of the environment, business, sustainability, retail professionals, and a general audience. Our guest is: Dr. Rachel Gross, who is assistant professor of history at the University of Colorado Denver, where she teaches US environmental, business, and public history. She works with university and community partners to bring history into the public realm. Welcome back to The Great Unfamous -- we've been on hiatus for the last year, but we're back in 2025, and we fire it back up with a guest I've tried to land for almost three years. Mark Williams taught me lessons about the breathtaking beauty of Durango, Colorado, how to fly fish and how you take on David-and-Goliath battles and win. Mark's a world-renowned fly fishing expert, author of more than 20 books, a sports writer, an award-winning alternative school teacher, a cancer survivor, a public speaker, an entrepreneur and more. But his best skill is his ability to storytell -- with a razor sharp wit and silver-tongue Texas drawl, he gets away with a lot because he's a cross between Odysseus and The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Meet the man with a knack for tricking people into believing in themselves and learn how he acquired this talent on this episode of The Great Unfamous. MARK WILLIAMS BIO Mark D. Williams is an educator, consultant, speaker and author. Williams has fished all over the world and is the author of the popular fishing/travel book, So Many Fish, So Little Time: 1001 of the World's Greatest Backcountry Honeyholes, Trout Rivers, Blue Ribbon Waters, Bass Lakes, and Saltwater Hot Spots from Harper Collins. Williams recently completed his first crime-mystery novel, The Hollow Men, first of the Guy Harwin series (Longmire meets True Detective/Seven.) He is currently finishing the second novel in the series, Purgatory. He has two other novels ready for review: The Bedside Diaries, and The Bomba Shack. Dale Earnhardt Jr. sits down for a conversation with his longtime friend and 2017 NASCAR Cup Champion Martin Truex Jr. With his recent retirement announcement in the rearview mirror, Dale Jr. is anxious to connect with Martin and see what his plans are for the future. At the time of the interview, Martin is preparing to embark on a fishing trip in his home state of New Jersey, which gives listeners a good idea of what he'll be spending his time doing once he's no longer behind the wheel full-time. Martin explains that over the last couple of years, he had been making more trips home to New Jersey and enjoyed connecting with his family and friends, so he recently purchased a house in his hometown. Dale inquires as to what kind of racing fans might see Martin doing in the future, to which he answers that he'll likely be running the Daytona 500, some Xfinity events, and even a NASCAR Truck in the coming years. Martin also expresses interest in getting behind the wheel of a NASCAR modified and competing in the Turkey Derby at his home track, Wall Stadium, where he started his racing career in the late 90s. On the topic of hunting and being a full-time sportsman, Dale plants the seed of Martin possibly hosting his own outdoors show, helping to further the brand and mission state of Bass Pro Shops, of which Martin has had a long-running partnership with since first coming together at Chance 2 Motorsports in 2003. The conversation looks at the two halves of Martin's NASCAR Cup career and how his journey to the top of stock car racing almost didn't happen, his working relationship with Cole Pearn and what his thoughts are currently on the NextGen Car.
