Guest posting, also called guest blogging, is a process in which a blogger creates content for another site in order to build backlinks, expand their audience, and strengthen their authority. Early on in the world of blogging, guest posts were a hugely popular way to increase your search engine optimization (SEO) and grow an audience. In fact, anyone could write a 300-word post, share it on any other site, and boost their blog's standing. It didn't even have to be a good post. However, in recent years Google (and other search engines) have updated their algorithms to limit the abuse of guest posts. These days posts need to be both well-written and useful, but also relevant to the blog on which they're posted… and the site should be in good standing, too. Still, guest blogging can be a valuable experience if you do it right. What are the Benefits of Guest Blogging? Broaden your audience. A guest post can get your ideas in front of new people, ideally those who will click over to your site and become loyal, raving fans. Tip: Include a strong call to action in guest posts, and links to other posts on your site (if permitted). Increase your traffic. When you bring more people into your world, the traffic to your site increases. The return on increased traffic is (usually) proportionate with the amount of traffic the site you're guest posting on gets. B Tip: Look for established sites that accept guest posts to get the most bang for your buck. Build SEO cred. When search engines rank your website, they consider a number of factors - thousands, actually - and backlinks are one such factor. A backlink is any link to your site from another. Tip: Consider the authority of the sites you're guest blogging on. Strengthen your authority. When you are granted permission to blog on another person's site, it is an implicit endorsement of you and your business. You are borrowing the authority of the site owner because their audience trusts them to curate quality posts. Tip: Look for bloggers who've built a loyal audience who trust their guidance. Expand your web online presence. The more places you are online, the more likely you are to be found by those you can help. Guest blogging provides more access points to you and your content. Tip: Target your guest blogging efforts on sites that serve similar audiences to yours. When You Should Pass on Guest Posting With all those reasons to guest post, it seems like a no-brainer, right? Not so fast. Not all guest blogging opportunities are created equal. You need to closely evaluate prospect separately and make sure that the post you spend your precious time and energy creating is going to provide the benefits above. Spam sites. The internet is littered with sites that provide little-to-no value and gain traffic by simply pumping out a constant flow of mediocre content. You don't want to be featured on those sites. There once was a time when a site was a site, and Google hadn't really figured out the difference, but those days are long gone. Search engines now rank sites for quality using an insane number of metrics. They also rank links leading from one site to another, so creating anything for those content mills isn't going to do much except waste your time. Too close to your products/ services. You don't want to guest post for a blog who serves the exact same market in the same way you do, especially if they're highly established and monetized. The blogs you post on should be related to yours, serving a similar audience, but in a different way. For example, a minimalism coach could work with a home decor blogger (think: How to Embrace Minimalism Without Making Your Home Look Sparse), or a classroom management blogger could partner with a Responsive Classroom blogger (think: 10 Morning Meetings to Reinforce Classroom Routines). You'd neglect your own blog. As a part-time blogger, you have to be careful about giving too much time away at the expense of your own blog. Guest blogging takes time - you have to do your research, pitch the blogger whose site you want to contribute to, and then you have to write a truly kick-ass post that will inspire their followers to click over to your site and find awesome stuff. If life is too crazy to take all that on AND write a weekly post for your own blog, put a pin in guest blogging until the next vacation. How to Find the Best Sites to Blog For (for your blog) Research. Do your homework before making contact with any bloggers. First, see if they accept guest posts. If not, and they're an established blogger, it's likely their policy not to permit others to share on their site. You can try to reach out anyway, but don't hold your breath. You also want to look at the types of posts they share. If they are a step-by-step how-to website, you want to match your proposed guest blogs to that. Finally, spend some time looking at what has already been written about on their site. Nothing will kill your chances at guest blogging like suggesting post ideas that are already on their blog. Find a Peripheral Blogger. As mentioned above, the best blogs to write for are ones that serve your audience in a different way than you do. This allows you to offer content that's of use to the site's owner, but also guides them towards your blog. Consider niches that are one level broader or more niched down than yours. For example, sustainable living and bee keeping, natural lawn care, canning food, or even alternative energy. Or mom lifestyle and mindful parenting, meal prep, calendar management, money saving tips for families, or homeschooling. Consider the benefit (for both of you). A guest post should provide an upside for both the contributor and the site owner. Before you start planning a post, think about what you hope to gain from sharing on this particular site. Of the many benefits I mentioned above, which are your biggest priorities, and does this site provide opportunities to meet those goals? Similarly, when asking other bloggers to borrow their blog space, you have to answer the question, “What's in it for me?” What can you provide for their audience that they can't? If you've done a thorough job finding someone who writes about a connected, but divergent, topic to yours, this will be easier to come up with. At the end of the day, being a guest on someone else's blog can be a fabulous opportunity, when done right. But it's not the quick and easy path that some purport. It takes time and effort, and remember that any post you write for another blog should be your A+ stuff. Only you can decide whether or not this is a good fit for you at this time. Please note: Side Hustle Teacher is not accepting guest posts at this time.

[00:18:11] How to Master Your Listing Presentations [00:22:05] The Framework for What to Do Before Listing Presentations [00:29:36] Where Does He See Agents Struggling in The Current Market? [00:33:07] Best Sites to Find Expired Listings [00:35:17] One Thing He Wishes He Had Implemented Sooner to Accelerate His Journey? [00:37:24] His Advice for People Looking to Take Action [00:40:54] In This Episode You'll Learn: In this episode, Casanova and Chadi talk about the importance of your environment, having a routine, mastering your listing presentations and how to deal with the shifting trends in the market. Chadi grew up in Dearborn, Michigan, where he saw his father work tirelessly to make ends meet. He says that he always had this thing inside of him that said that he going to be a game changer. He got involved in real estate around 1997, while working other part time jobs as well. He started doing well in real estate, but life wasn't the way he envisioned it to be. Then, he was exposed to Mike Ferry, and Chadi started to think differently in ways he'd never thought before. His goal was now to make a hundred thousand dollars a year. He decided to move to Newport Beach, California. He got to work right away and got to the six-figure mark in the first year. There, he was doing one-on-one coaching sessions as well, and being around these masterminds broadened his horizon as well. He started thinking to himself, what would it be like to make a hundred thousand dollars a month? Chadi got a six figure raise from Mike, but he decided to part ways and start his own real estate business. He took his first listing in the first 24 hours, and secured over a hundred thousand dollars worth of commissions in his first 30 days. From there, he started coaching again, something that had become his passion. Since then, he has been on over 30,000 one-on-one coaching calls. Chadi adds that the decision to leave a high paying job, to start his own business was scary, but that meant that on the other side was his freedom. He trained his mind to believe that on the other side of his fear is the freedom, but alongside that, he had the right mindset, skills and tools as well. He adds that being around great thinker, they're constantly injecting you and changing your DNA and you can't help yourself but to level up to just try to get to that level. He says that your environment, and what is around you has a significant impact on you, especially the people that you choose to go out there, hang out with. Being in a mastermind group helped him form a routine, something he did not have previously in his life, and that changed everything for him. He says that we're a product of our rituals, something that he practices in his daily routine to change his peak and state. Chadi adds that you would get a lot better results if you are feeling good, as opposed to when you are forcing yourself to do the same. He says that there is no substitution for your work ethic and you doing the work. Talking about what can help agents improve their real estate game, he says that the single most important thing to master is the listing presentation. Then, you got to identify where the sellers are. Chadi then goes on to share the five steps that will help your listing presentation. Step number one is, is the introduction. You have to master because your first impression as it is going to dictate the remainder of the listing presentation. While talking to the potential client, you have to use the assumptive language patterns. Step number two is to reconnect and motivate, again using assumptive language patterns. Step number three would be the pricing part of the presentation. Step number four is to close; nine out of 10-times listing presentation ends right there. Step number five is your marketing plan of action. If you need that, as a backup, share it with them. Chadi shares the formula and the process that agents should go through before they actually get out of their car to walk through the property, to get them in the right state and to be able to transfer, showcase their confidence, authority and expertise, and get that listing. He adds that the power of visualization can change your state and energy, and you would walk in feeling completely better, and that'd increase your odds of communicating at a higher level that gets the contract signed. Talking about the different markets, Chadi adds that you can't control what's going to happen in the external market. You have to focus on the internal market. He adds that regardless of what happens in the market, keep on working on you being the best version of yourself, and your craft to make sure that you're able to service your clients and community at a higher level than everyone else in the marketplace, and as the marketplace does what the marketplace is going to do, it's not going to impact your income. Chadi says that the next wave of opportunity is going to be ‘for sale by owners' and ‘expireds.' So, you got to get your skill up right now while there's few of them. He recommends REDX, Vulcan7 and Espresso Agent for finding those listings. Talking about if he could change one thing that would have gotten him success much sooner, he says, it would be hiring help. He says that one mistake that people make when they begin to hire is that a lot of times, they hire a buyer's agent before they hire an assistant. To help people take action, Chadi says that try the following exercise. Grab a piece of paper and a pen and audit yourself, but not audit yourself, looking for all the negative flaws that you possess, because we all have those. Take inventory of all the beauty that already lies inside of you and start looking at that. He says that what you will discover is that you're much more beautiful than you think to be. You're much more creative than you think you are. You are much more powerful than you ever imagined you could be. It's just that your mind has been clouded looking at things from a different angle and a different lens. Key Quotes: “I wanted to become a teacher and change lives for children, et cetera, and then I became a teacher that just makes a difference in a completely different industry…” “People look at you and say, wow, you're lucky. I'm not lucky. I worked my ass off…” “The scarier it is the more likely you have to do it because on the other side of your fear is your freedom…” “Environment is everything, and we can prove that right now because who you are, who we are people that were multiple people, multiple personalities living in one single body…” “I always tell every single person, if you want to change you, interrupt your freaking damn environment first…” “When I interrupted that lifestyle and started being around people that are waking up earlier and reading books and doing these things, and I started to do those things…” “Lead generation is easy. Lead conversion is the hard part…” “There's many different ways to generate them, but the fastest way to generate leads is through expired and for sale by owner and every single marketplace has them…” “They have to be engaged because when you engage them, at the end of the pricing card of your presentation, they always choose the right price…” “One of the things that anybody that's read books, personal development books, and all this stuff we talk about like the power of visualization…” “Having the right team member on your team is a game changer…” “If you don't have an assistant, you are the assistant...” “I think everything begins with you and you already have everything you possibly need to level up and live the life of your dreams. I just listened to the podcasts on game weight and competition and you asked for more philosophical questions so here goes! Getting and keeping a group active and regular is probably the biggest problem that gamers face. There are so many things that can trump game night. Often the main causes are important responsibilities like child care, work and relationships. So are there tricks you've used to mitigate these factors? Do you use any techniques to build excitement around game night so that people want to show up more? Assuming that not all players are required, do you think a larger group has more of these problems or fewer? I weirdly get the feeling that when one person doesn't show up it seems to give license to others to not show. Have you seen this happen? Obviously this is a really tough problem to crack. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Tom's Do The Math blog is one of the best site on internet. If you measure a site by how much it can improve a reader's life and human society, I challenge you to find one with greater potential. A couple peers include Low Tech magazine and Sustainable Energy Without the Hot Air, which is a book that you can download for free.Tom makes the physics behind the environment and our interaction with it simple and accessible. If you don't like math, well, it's the language of nature, so it's important to understand what's happening in nature. But even so, the point of collecting data and calculating results isn't for the sake of the math. It's to get past it to get to your values and to act on them. The point of the math is to get past the mathWhen W. Edwards Deming initially apparently contradictory statements make sense, you understand the point of taking data and calculating results. He said:“Without data, you're just another person with an opinion.”and"Management by numerical goal is an attempt to manage without knowledge of what to do"Doing the math frees you from confusion to enable talking meaningfully about what to do.Regarding the environment, as long as people can think they can just switch to solar for everything that needs energy or that they can close some imaginary loop and recycle everything, they'll do things that lower Earth's ability to support life and human society. They'll feel confident and happy as they step on the gas, thinking it's the brake, driving toward a brick wall.Nature is the perfect mathematician. It doesn't react to your feelings about waste or aspirations but what you actually do.Tom's conclusions about solutions and admonitions against non-solutions point to what works. A path forward becomes obvious and simple when you understand the math and physics. You may not initially like it, but you can change what you like, as sure as most of us learned to like vegetables despite preferring ice cream as children. The result is clarity and mental freedom. The challenge, knowing what works and doesn't, is seeing the madness of people acting without understanding these things. The result is living by your values with confidence, not just hoping for the best. If anyone wonders where my views come from, it's analysis like Tom's. Also Low Tech Magazine, Limits to Growth, and Sustainability Without the Hot Air.There's a lot science that I support and value, but find inaccessibly complex, even with a PhD in physics. Tom's work is accessible. People think the science is hard and scientists confusing. It doesn't have to be.What the math saysTom's main conclusions point to reducing consumption as the most viable solution to our environmental problems. Without it nothing else works. You think you have a solution without reducing consumption? Read his blog. I bet he covered it and showed its limits. My experience shows reducing consumption as improving most Americans' lives, at least the first 80% to 90% reduction. Missing from nearly every mainstream message I've heard but clear from Tom's life, my life, and a few others is that consuming less brings joy, meaning, purpose, community, and relationships along with cleaning our air, land, and water. If you think reduction is an economic problem, read Tom's blog on his conversations with the economist because growth is a bigger problem.Meanwhile human societies sustained for hundreds of thousands of years without growth. Our growth since Adam Smith has picked all the low hanging fruit, high hanging fruit, and now we're digging under the sea for every scrap of oil we can find and polluting everything for a few moments of forced smile.Read Tom's blog and you learn we could create happiness, meaning, purpose, and community instead. Build a website in just 5 days (even if you're not techie) at www.free5daywebsitechallenge.com Already have a website? Take the Free "Jumpstart Your Website Traffic" marketing mini-course at www.jumpstartyourwebsitetraffic.com Leave a Review! On August 1, Google pushed out it’s latest algorithm update and apparently, it totally rocked the internet. Kings and queens of rankings were dethroned, and other websites who struggled to crack page 1 were suddenly boosted. So in today’s Pep Talk, I’m going to share what the update is, why it matters to side hustlers, entrepreneurs, bloggers, and online businesses and what you can do to make sure your website is optimized for this latest update. This latest algorithm update has to do with what Google calls YMYL, or Your Money or Your Life websites. Your Money or Your Life websites according to Google content that “could potentially impact the future happiness, health, financial stability, or safety of users.” And then in Google’s Search Quality Evaluator Guidelines, which I’ll link to in the show notes, they define these sites pretty broadly – so any site where you can buy something – which affects your money, and then financial information sites, medical, legal, news, and the other. So what’s happening is that sites like this are being held to a higher standard when it comes to Expertise, Authority, and Trust – or as everyone in the SEO industry calls, it, EAT. So like, if you have a legal website and you’re hiring a bunch of writers to churn out content for this blog and none of them are actual lawyers, there’s no telling who wrote the articles and you don’t have any indication of whether the content is credible or not, Google doesn’t like that. I found some great info on this latest update from MarieHaynes.com and the Moz Blog. Both sites talk about how this Your Money or Your Life update has hit huge websites that rely on SEO as their main traffic strategy, like Livestrong, and Prevention, and Dr. Axe.com all seeing pretty big drops in traffic because their content affects your health, and the Expertise, Authority, and Trust was apparently not up to par with Google’s standards. But what does this mean for people like us? What about bloggers who write about all kinds of topics including personal finance and health and a limitless number of topics related to Your Money or Your Life. That’s what blogging is all about, right? The majority of bloggers are trying to “impact the future happiness, health, financial stability, or safety of users.” Most of them are trying to have a positive impact, and most of them are also trying to monetize their blogs in some way, so that’s both your money and your life. What about you? Does your side hustle affect anyone’s money or their life? I really, really hope so! Because why would you do it if you weren’t going to make money through helping someone improve their life? As Zig Ziglar says, “You can have everything you want in life if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” Personally, I wasn’t affected. I looked at my Google Analytics and my number of website visitors increased 6.81% in the first week of August – but I’ve totally been working on my Pinterest game and I honestly don’t put a whole lot into SEO – right or wrong, it’s just not been a tactic of mine to focus on because it has seemed like a game a little fish in a big pond like me can’t really win.. But…I think this algorithm change is a great thing for people like me. Like us. Here’s what I think it means: You have an opportunity to stand out online more now than ever before. I think it means that it’s more important than ever before for you to step up and share your knowledge with the world. Trust is starting to shift away from big brands and big businesses back to people. Individual people. I heard this at Social Media Marketing World back in March when the founder Michael Stelzner was talking about the Facebook algorithm change that everyone was freaking out about, how Facebook would focus on showing content in the newsfeed that had meaningful interaction from real people. Not likes, not one-word comments, but actual comments and conversations in the threads. People talking to each other. And he also said that a smaller, more highly engaged audience is more valuable than a large one. Brands know this. That’s why they aren’t only paying people with ginormous followings like the Kardashians for sponsored content, they are looking at micro-influencers – people with smaller, more highly engaged audiences that have a strong reputation with their audience. This Google algorithm change just reinforces that whole entire concept. Because how they are holding the Your Money or Your Life blogs and websites to a higher standard is by reviewing the Expertise, Authority, and Trust of the website. How? Well, they’re looking at the About page for one to see if they can tell who is behind the website. They’re looking for author bios on blog posts. And they’re looking at your external reputation – meaning, do you exist online outside of your website? Are you on other social media platforms? Are you like, a real live person? Are you meaningfully contributing to your industry? So tactically, how can you make sure your website or blog is optimized for these latest changes? Marie Haynes says to display all of your E-A-T on your about page. She says to make it “full of reasons why you are known as the most authoritative business in your vertical. Brag about awards won, press recognition, years of experience and more.” Maybe this is just my personality, but when I read that I think Ew!! And then I think, okay, but be careful how you do this. I think it’s great for companies to lead with that stuff, but for me, my About page is really an opportunity for me to yes, share more about me and why I’m the right person to help you, but done so in a way that’s really talking about YOU and how Your Money and Your Life will improve by being a part of my community. So my Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and my One Woman Shop 100 Best Sites for Solopreneurs and all the places I’ve guest posted and been featured, what do you care? If you need to know that to trust me AFTER you’ve learned why I’m the best person to help you get what you want, fine, I’ll put it at the end. But I’m not going to lead with it. So tactically, on your About page, put a photo of yourself, tell your story and why your experiences make you qualified to help people who are just a little bit behind your on your journey. You have to have a degree and be certified in your niche to live up to Google’s standards of expertise, authority and trust. Then, you’ll want to enable author bios on all of your blog posts, and spruce up your WordPress bio. Link to all of your social profiles and be a real person on those channels! Does that mean you have to spend all of your time on social? No. But having a presence will help. Make sure your website is optimized to build your email list!!! What’s the point of getting traffic if you have no way to communicate with them after the fact!!! Finally, SEO is just one tool in your toolbox. There are many, many other ways to connect with your ideal client online. Social media. Pinterest. YouTube. Guest Posting. Relationship building. Tapping your personal network. Even paid advertising! The list goes on. So if this focus on Expertise, Authority and Trust has you feeling like a bit of an imposter, here’s what I want you to focus on instead. Show up. Consistently. Create awesome content, and create a community around that content. And you also need to make sure that your website is all about the Know, Like and Trust factor. Know Like and Trust is a common marketing term, and it’s the foundation behind the whole way I teach people to build their website. Everything I teach inside of the Free 5 Day Website Challenge revolves around building a website that oozes Know, Like and Trust. Once people know, like and trust you, you become seen as an expert on a topic, which raises your authority and broadens your trust – and now you have Google’s EAT. And I talk to a lot of clients that tell me how much they hate social media. They don’t want their personal network to know about their side hustle. They aren’t ready for people to find out, so they avoid social media and try to SEO-optimize the heck out of their blog hoping that they’ll come up in Google search results, and then when they aren’t getting traffic they get discouraged. Trust me, I get it. I did the same thing when I first started out. But what’s going to work online in 2018 and beyond is not hiding behind your blog. Because people want to connect with people, and they are more than just website traffic. I don’t want you to think about traffic. I want you to think about people. About that one person who comes to your site, reads something that you wrote, takes action on it and changes their life. Those people exist. I hear from them all of the time and it’s amazing! So what this algorithm change means from my perspective? I think it means that if you really want your side hustle to work out, if you want it to turn into your full-time gig or have it make enough money for you to pay off your debt or stay at home with your kids or let you travel or whatever it is that you want, then you can’t be scared to stand up and say what you know about a topic. You must put intentional effort into creating amazing, shareworthy content. And you have to build a community around that content on social media. That’s how you’re going to win in 2018 and beyond, by building a highly engaged audience of people that know, like and trust you which helps you build your expertise and authority online. And when you have that, you can monetize with integrity, through affiliate marketing, through sponsorships, through offering your own services or creating your own products and courses. The opportunities are endless. Today’s pep talk is brought to you by Bluehost. Go to www.peptalksforsidehustlers.com/bluehost and get 36 months of web hosting for just $2.95 a month. That’s less than one trip to Starbucks a month – and if you’re anything like me, you’re at Starbucks more than that! Once I found out that I was going to be profiled in New York Times Bestselling Author Chris Guillebeau’s latest book, Side Hustle, I couldn’t believe it. I felt a little numb, actually. My name and story printed in a book? Are you freaking kidding me right now? It’s like a dream I didn’t even know I had come true!! Like, I never even concocted in my mind that this was a possibility. I had first heard of Chris a couple of years ago on Lewis Howes’ podcast, the School of Greatness. He’s the author of The Art of Nonconformity, The $100 Startup, The Happiness of Pursuit, Born For This, and now Side Hustle. Instead of the usual book promo interview, it was actually a pretty deep, personal interview which you can listen to here. Chris shared that he suffering from anxiety and depression, losing his brother, and feeling a bit disconnected emotionally from his accomplishments, feeling unsettled that maybe he wasn’t grateful enough for what he had created. It was a fantastic interview, and I really appreciated his vulnerability and his story. I’m really proud to be profiled in Side Hustle for a couple of reasons. One, it’s an amazing book. I’m all about creating actionable content, and Chris has taken it to the next level with Side Hustle. It’s literally a step-by-step guide on how to come up with an idea to make money on the side, how to determine if your idea is good, how to turn your idea into an offer, how to price it and how to promote it. And Chris shares stories of side hustlers like me throughout the book to illustrate the concepts that he’s sharing. Plus, I love that it’s the perfect complement to the Free 5 Day Website Challenge – because once you figure out what your side hustle is going to be, then you use the 5 Day to help you build your website and start building your audience. Um, perfect!!! And it’s a quick read also – I sat down with my coffee at 8am on Sunday and wrapped it up by 9:45am feeling totally inspired with ways to improve my current offerings (and having a tiny vulnerability hangover, if I’m being totally honest). So I highly recommend that you pick it up, even if you already know what your side-hustle is, because it will totally help you optimize it. You can order it from Amazon here. But you can’t just read it. You have to actually DO it. More on that later. But here’s the other reason why being in Side Hustle is so important to me. Since I put my notice in at my day job, I had some pretty bad anxiety about it – the kind of anxiety that kept me awake at night and crippled my productivity because the only thing that stopped the racing thoughts and the fear was distracting myself with work or drinking a few beers in the evening to relax and even be able to fall asleep. (Okay, this might be the oversharing that Chris mentioned in Side Hustle, but whatevs. You guys get me.) And I’m sure it’s no surprise to you that those things only made my anxiety worse. But like many things that creep up on you so slowly that you don’t even really notice until it’s bad, I didn’t realize I was feeling that bad until one weekend where I literally stayed in bed all day binge-watching the Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu. I was trying to keep the fear of all the bad things that could happen when I no longer had a steady paycheck at bay. I had a ton of emails and Facebook group questions to answer and client work to do, and I couldn’t bring myself to even face it. I had also not renewed my coaching package with my business coach, which I told myself was because I needed to save money, but I look back on that now it was a telltale sign that I was avoiding facing something. I don’t know why I do that, it’s so counterintuitive… like, I’m afraid of losing everything so I’m going to do…. Nothing. The opposite of what would fix the situation. I think that’s called self-sabotage. Anyway. After sharing how I was feeling with my sister and a friend, they both suggested therapy (which I haven’t done… YET, it’s on my to-do list). But that did spark me to renew my sessions with my business coach. Now, I know she’s not a therapist, but she has a true gift for reframing my mindset and getting me back on track mentally. It’s kind of amazing, really. I wrote about this in another blog post, but we talked about focusing on all of the positive possibilities instead of the negatives ones. I know, it seems really simple, but just like I have a hard time imagining what I’d look like if I were 30 pounds lighter because I’ve never actually seen it, I’ve had a hard time imagining what life would be like with the cap taken off of my earning potential and no job to go to every day – i.e. the freedom I’ve been chasing for the past 3 years. Like, I’ve been so focused on the goal of quitting my day job and taking my side hustle full time that I literally have not thought about what will happen after that… Hmm… I should probably dream up that vision and write down what that looks like so I know where I’m heading next… anyway… When I’m short on belief, the evidence really helps. Since I started my side hustle, there have been a few things that have happened along the way that have given me confidence and opened up my mind to what’s POSSIBLE. Like when I got my very first subscriber and my very first affiliate commission. And then when I was named one of the 100 Best Sites for Solopreneurs from One Woman Shop. When I had my first $5,000 month. And then my first $10,000 month. Or that nearly 5000 people have signed up for the Free 5 Day Website Challenge. When I hear from someone that the Free 5 Day Website Challenge helped her son get into university. And now, being in Side Hustle. For all of it, I feel grateful. But I also feel validated. And I know, I KNOW that the belief has to come from within and that I can’t rely on external validation to tell me that I’m doing the right things. I know that I need to evict the bully in my head and wrap my mind around the idea that I can create whatever I want in my life (as long as I take the time to figure out what I want). I know that I don’t have to have ever seen it in real life to know that it’s possible. But it’s the truth. I feel validated. I don’t know what I’m trying to prove or to whom I’m trying to prove it to… So I guess that’s what I can put on my list to talk about at therapy. But I also know that I took a specific set of actions to make this happen. I wasn’t “discovered.” This opportunity didn’t just come out of thin air. I took action and made it happen. And that’s why I know that I’m going to be okay no matter what happens next. And when I pulled that book out of the Amazon box on Monday and opened to Chapter 8 where Chris told my story, I showed my husband and said, “My name’s in this book, and the next time my name’s in a book it will be because I wrote the book.” So what I really want you to take away from all of this is that even when you have the blueprint, like what Chris shares in Side Hustle and what I share in the Free 5 Day Website Challenge and my courses, mentally can be challenging to grow a business on your own. Especially when you have no idea that you’re holding yourself back. And when you have no idea that you’re in your own way, it’s difficult to take the actions you need to take to reach your goals. And that’s why it’s so important, in my opinion, if you’re serious about your business and you really want it to work to invest in a coach – the kind that will help you get out of your own way. And then the secret is to just do whatever they tell you to do. Because it’s the action that’s going to make all the difference, not the ideas.

Yesterday we talked about the number one mistake I made in my business that really caused me a lot of stress in the early years of my business – you can go back and listen to that episode at www.peptalksforsidehustlers.com/36. The second biggest mistake I made was WAITING TOO LONG TO JOIN A MASTERMIND GROUP. Just because I’m a one woman shop doesn’t mean I have to carry the weight of this business on my shoulders. I had come across One Woman Shop while researching ways to grow my business, perused their membership, and didn’t do anything. A few months later I was nominated for their 100 Best Sites for Solopreneurs list. I perused their membership again and did nothing. Then I saw how much money I was blowing on Facebook ads vs. how much traffic I was getting from that one blog post on their site and though “Hmm… Maybe my $30 a month would be better spent on a One Woman Shop membership since it comes with ad space…” I didn’t know that it came with a monthly accountability group and one-on-one coaching. So I took advantage of that right away – and the very first thing Cristina and Sara helped me to do is set some boundaries (and they gave me language to use so I wouldn’t feel like a total asshole), gave me some tools and ideas to automate more and work less, and activate my community to help me market. You can check out One Woman Shop at peptalksforsidehustlers.com/onewomanshop. I’ve also had the pleasure of being invited to participate in a couple of small, free masterminds. One was of entrepreneurs in my niche and the other was of entrepreneurs in a different niche and while I found value in both, I felt like the small group of people in my niche at the same level as me or higher was more valuable. You know the saying that two heads are better than one? It’s imperative that you have a trusted group of people that can help you navigate the ups and downs of side hustling. And that’s exactly why I created a Facebook group to go along with Pep Talks for Side Hustlers, which you can join for free at www.peptalksforsidehustlers.com/facebook. This is a space where you can share your struggles, get advice, and boost other people up when you have an experience or advice that can help them. It’s so, so important to have a group of like-minded people with similar goals to bounce ideas off of. My friends and family while they love me and they’re excited for me, they just don’t get what I do. I see their eyes glaze over when I talk about it. But the people in your mastermind group, they get it. They can see your blind spots that you can’t see. They can see your strengths, they can help you identify patterns of behavior that are holding you back. If you go on this journey alone, you won’t have the benefit of learning from others experiences. You’ll have to make all the mistakes yourself instead of learning from others. And it can be very discouraging and demoralizing to feel like you’re in it by yourself. But when you know that others have been where you are and still found success, that’s what gives you hope and helps you keep pushing forward. The biggest thing I struggle with when it comes to a mastermind is committing to the meeting times. At the time of recording this pep talk, I’m figuring out how to pare down my schedule a little bit and give myself some breathing room for professional development like masterminds. They tend to be the first thing I push off when my workload gets too big, and that’s something I want to get a handle on because they are soooo valuable! Tomorrow, I’m going to share the third biggest mistake I made on the way to solopreneur success – creating a product without validating that my audience even wanted it first.
How to Sound Like a Professional Podcaster How to Sound Like a Professional Podcaster Are you ready to sound like a professional podcaster? Do you want your guest to know that she is dealing with a savvy pro podcaster? If so, then listen to the latest episode of My Biz Dream Team: Opportunity Wednesday Training Series. We continue with “How to Get Started with Podcasting Part 4.” In this episode we discuss the steps to take before you invite your first guest, if you want to sound like a professional podcaster. Remember, your potential guest does not want to deal with an amateur! 1. Produce at Least One Podcast or Podcast Series If you want to sound like a professional podcaster, then you want to produce at least one podcast or podcast series before you invite your first guest. How will they know if you are a good presenter or interviewer if they have never heard you? You will need a website for your podcast. That means you will need to buy a domain name for your program. If you already have a website, where you blog, you can link your podcast to that website. That is what we did. On our website, My Biz Dream Team.com, you will find a link to our podcast on the side bar. You may want to try something similar. 2. Get the Right Equipment If you want to sound like a professional podcaster, then make sure that you get the right equipment. I recommend you get a good noise cancelling USB headset with a microphone. I recommend and use a Plantronics headset that I bought on Amazon. You will also want professional recording software. Audacity is available for free. Also, think carefully about your podcast hosting platform. We use and recommend Blubrry. We like Blubrry because it: a. easily connects to our WordPress blog; b. provides us great analytics; and c. is not expensive. For more information on choosing podcast hosting platform, click here, 8 Best Sites to Host Your Podcasts. For information on setting up your podcast feed, I recommend this article, How to Start Your Own Podcast: Getting Your Voice Heard Literally. 3. Prepare the Recording Space If you want to sound like a professional podcast, then be sure to prepare your recording space. That means you should make your recording in a room with a closed door. So many people make the mistake of not thinking about where they will make the recording. You want to avoid background noises. Interruptions by crying babies, barking dogs, and ringing phones are not professional. You want to get prepared by having a glass of water nearby, your notes for the program, and a smile on your face. Remember to close the door and to hit the record button! In a recent article, media trainer and publicist, Joanne McCall, also offers several excellent tips on how to sound like a savvy pro podcaster. One great tip, that we followed is, “actively listen to other podcasts to learn what you love and what you hate.” Conclusion/Call to Action In this series on “How to Start a Podcast,” we have emphasized the importance of having great conversations on your podcast. One way to have great conversations is to invite engaging guests. If you want the best guests for your audience, before issuing that invitation make sure that you sound like a professional podcaster.
