Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 17, 2024 is: blarney BLAR-nee noun Blarney refers to false but charming talk that often flatters the listener. // The bartender laughingly asked her gregarious patron if anyone ever believed his blarney. See the entry > Examples: “Some tales are mundane, like the song about Molly Malone: ‘In Dublin fair city, the girls are so pretty …' Did such a woman ever exist? There's a record of a Mary Malone who lived (and died) in the 17th century. She was likely both a fishmonger and a lady of the night. … Some tales are blarney. Blarney Castle dates to 1446, and there's a slab of carboniferous limestone near the top. It's said to be the stone used by Jacob as a pillow when he dreamt of a ladder to heaven. Others say Clíodhna, Queen of the Banshees, told Cormac Laidir MacCarthy to kiss the stone so he would be eloquent when defending his home in the court of Queen Elizabeth.” — Kevin Fisher-Paulson, The San Francisco Chronicle, 28 Mar. 2023 Did you know? The village of Blarney in County Cork, Ireland, is home to Blarney Castle, and in the southern wall of that edifice lies the famous Blarney Stone. Legend has it that anyone who kisses the Blarney Stone will gain the gift of skillful flattery, but that gift must be attained at the price of some limber maneuvering—you have to lie down and hang your head over a precipice to reach and kiss the stone. One story claims the word blarney gained popularity as a word for “flattery” after Queen Elizabeth I of England used it to describe the flowery (but apparently less than honest) cajolery of McCarthy Mor, who was then the lord of Blarney Castle.

HORSEFLY CHRONICLES RADIO IS SPONSORED BY CARNATION Long ago Vanessa Hogle was stuck. Knee deep in two jobs, a dead end relationship and no positive viewpoint regarding the future. Knowing something had to change she drew inspiration from her past and began to forge a new life for herself and her son. She had been involved in the paranormal community before and knew that's where she had to start. A former fellow investigator, had started up a publishing company and asked her to write about her experiences. Having "remote viewed" for a previous investigative team, and consulted for The "Leave or Die" episode of The Haunted, on Animal Planet, Vanessa had more than enough material to write a book. Subsequently fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming an author. Major life changes were happening, at this time, forcing Vanessa to re-access her life. Knowing there was nowhere to go but up, she let go of all that no longer supported her. Writing her first book, Soulscapes, which was released April 28th of 2015 and ending a six year dead end relationship, acted as a catalyst forcing her to come out of her shell and accept who she really was. It wasn't long before she began to network with like-minded individuals all over the world. Gaining insight, and experience, she set out to tell her story. Her para-biography, Giving up the Ghost, release date August 27th of 2015 laid it all out for the world to see. The struggles, the heartache, the confusion of growing up with certain gifts. During this time word of what Vanessa could do had gotten around. She began reading, and remote viewing, for multiple teams in the United States and abroad. Even co-hosting her own show, Edge of the Rabbit Hole for over 4 years. She also began to make numerous appearances on blogtalk radio, multiple podcast and You Tube. Her appearances include Beyond The Strange, Miami Ghost Chronicles, Stories of the Supernatural, multiple appearances on Spaced Out Radio, Necromancer Live, Paranormal Collaboration, Paranormal King, multiple appearances on Paranormal Connection Radio, Our Paranormal Stories and extensive appearances on Paranormal Zone TV. Her abilities and accomplishments have also been written about in Campus Ghost of Norman and Entertainment 2Morrow as well as KFOR news, in Oklahoma, who did a special segment "Is This a Great State or What?" on Vanessa. Through these shows, and social media, Vanessa has been able...in the last four years... to travel the world investigating and meeting those whom she has helped, remotely. Her travels have taken her to New Orleans, for Haunted Bourbon Paracon where, upon arriving, she was immediately contacted to do a special segment for the local news station 4WWL in regards to the Abita Springs Bakery. She has also investigated in Alton, Illinois at the Mineral Springs Hotel, Easton, PA at the Horsefly Chronicles House. Staten Island, NY and NJ for the Cropsey case, and documentary about the disappearance of Holly Ann Hughes. In West Virginia at Moundsville State Prison. In Virginia at multiple private residences, Saylors Creek Battlefield, cabin on 360 and Hollywood Cemetery. In Sheffield, England, at The Old Queens Head...where the head of programming of History UK, Dom Wilkins, drove from London to investigate with her. Grace Dieu Priory in Sheffield, England. Hellfire Caves in England. Whitby hostel/Abbey, in Whitby England. Mary Kings Close in Edinburgh, Scotland. City Center in Glasgow, Scotland. Private Lodging in Edinburgh, Scotland. Hellfire Club in Dublin, Ireland. Blarney Castle in Cork, Ireland. Ross Castle in Killarney, Ireland. Muckross Abbey, Co Kerry, Ireland. The Ambassador Hotel in Cork, Ireland, Morrigans cave, Spelmans motel, Tuam, Moore Hall, Leap Castle, Kilmanheim Gaol, Wicklow Goal and many more. Not all of these are true investigations but, as a sensitive, Vanessa is able to pick up on activity regardless and document. She took many of these experiences and put them in a third book called, Walking with Ghosts...release date September 25th 2017. Vanessa went on to write Rebel Witch in June 2019, Diary of a Psychic Loser Magnet in June 2020, Ghosts Abroad Ireland in February 2021 and They Would Have Burned Me in July 2022. What The Soul Knows has a projected release date of March 2023. Dr. Jeanne Morgan Zarucchi fires up legacies of British colonialism in contemporary American consumption, through Johnson Brothers' Old Britain Castles Ceramic Plate, produced from 1930. Manufactured for export to America, Old Britain Castles promised to connect consumers with their 18th century colonial origins. Produced by the British firm Johnson Brothers from 1930, designers used engravings of Blarney Castle in Ireland to target new immigrants, capitalising on class dynamics after the American Revolution. Miscalculated marketing strategies may have backfired, but the pattern remained in production for 84 years. Antiquated by design, these imagined heirlooms challenge the idea of the 'Roaring Twenties', revealing how many Americans longed to return to a time of perceived tradition, stability, and values. With their combination of fine art and function, they also speak to the neoimperial business practices of Staffordshire's Wedgwood pottery ever since. PRESENTER: Dr. Jeanne Morgan Zarucchi, Professor of Art History at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She is the author of The Material Culture of Tableware: Staffordshire Pottery and American Values. ART: Old Britain Castles Ceramic Plate, Johnson Brothers (1930). Blarney Castle is an imposing 15th century ruin a few miles outside the town of Cork and this is where “The Blarney Stone ” is situated. The stone itself is considered to be a powerful talisman and whoever kisses it, is endowed with eloquence for life. Holmes and Watson are enjoying a drink in the local hostelry when a gentleman by the name of Geoffrey Hankin introduces himself and his partner Michael Corcoran. An argument ensues between the partners and a bet is made, that Hankin dare not kiss the blarney stone. Holmes feels there is something not quite right with the wager and agrees to act as referee to make certain things are done correctly, but dastardly deeds are on the cards. . . Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 17, 2021 is: blarney BLAR-nee noun 1 : skillful flattery : blandishment 2 : nonsense, humbug Examples: The bartender laughingly asked her gregarious patron if anyone ever believed his blarney. "There's plenty of blarney around the history of cocktails in general, and the Irish coffee is no exception. The most well-known origin story is that it was born in the 1940s, when a bartender at the Foynes airport in County Limerick served it to passengers who had disembarked half-frozen from a seaplane that had turned back due to bad weather. One of the passengers asked whether the delicious libation was Brazilian coffee, and the bartender replied, 'No, that's Irish coffee.'" — M. Carrie Allan, The Washington Post, 13 Mar. 2017 Did you know? The village of Blarney in County Cork, Ireland, is home to Blarney Castle, and in the southern wall of that edifice lies the famous Blarney Stone. Legend has it that anyone who kisses the Blarney Stone will gain the gift of skillful flattery, but that gift must be attained at the price of some limber maneuvering—you have to lie down and hang your head over a precipice to reach and kiss the stone. One story claims the word blarney gained popularity as a word for "flattery" after Queen Elizabeth I of England used it to describe the flowery (but apparently less than honest) cajolery of McCarthy Mor, who was then the lord of Blarney Castle.

Five short years ago Vanessa Hogle was stuck. Knee deep in two jobs, a dead end relationship and no positive viewpoint regarding the future. Knowing something had to change she drew inspiration from her past and began to forge a new life for herself and her son. She had been involved in the paranormal community before and knew that's where she had to start. A friend, and former fellow investigator, had started up a publishing company and asked her to write about her experiences. Having "remote viewed" for his previous investigative team, and consulted for the "Leave or Die" episode of The Haunted, on Animal Planet, Vanessa had more than enough material to write a book, subsequently fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming an author. Major life changes were happening, at this time, forcing Vanessa to reassess her life. Knowing there was nowhere to go but up, she let go of all that no longer supported her. Writing a book, "Soulscapes", which was released April 28th of 2015 and ending a six year dead end relationship, acted as a catalyst forcing her to come out of her shell and accept who she really is. It wasn't long before she began to network with like-minded individuals all over the world. Gaining insight, and experience, she set out to tell her story. Her para-biography, "Giving up the Ghost", release date August 27th of 2015 laid it all out for the world to see. The struggles, the heartache, the confusion of growing up with certain gifts. During this time word of what Vanessa could do had gotten around. She began reading, and remote viewing, for multiple teams in the United States and abroad. Her abilities and accomplishments have also been written about in Campus Ghost of Norman and Entertainment 2Morrow. Through these shows, and social media, Vanessa has been able,in the last four years, to travel the world investigating and meeting those whom she has helped, remotely. In Sheffield, England, at The Old Queens Head, where the head of programming of History UK, Dom Wilkins, drove from London to investigate with her. Grace Dieu Priory in Sheffield, England. Hellfire Caves in England. Whitby hostel/Abbey, in Whitby England. Mary Kings Close in Edinburgh, Scotland. City Center in Glasgow, Scotland. Private Lodging in Edinburgh, Scotland. Hellfire Club in Dublin, Ireland. Blarney Castle in Cork, Ireland. Ross Castle in Killarney, Ireland. Muckross Abbey, Co Kerry, Ireland. The Ambassador Hotel in Cork, Ireland and many more. Not all of these are true investigations but, as a sensitive, Vanessa is able to pick up on activity regardless and document. She took many of these experiences and put them in a third book called, "Walking with Ghosts", release date September 25th 2017. All three of Vanessa's books have spent multiple weeks on the Amazon Best sellers list, in multiple genres ranging from the paranormal to self help to travel and exploration. Vanessa has recently completed nearly 5 years on a very successful You Tube show titled "Edge of the Rabbit Hole" with her publisher, Mike Ricksecker. She has also been published in four books, other than her own, that are compilations of ghost stories called "Encounters with the Paranormal" Volumes 1,2,3 and 4. Her fourth release, "Rebel Witch: A Memoir" was released June 25, 2019. Vanessa has also worked on a documentary in Ireland. There in July 2019, she was granted access to locations mainstream media, and better known investigators, are unable to obtain permission to enter. This has produced a series that is available on Amazon Prime Video titled "Hidden Gems Ireland" and has also recieved overwhelming reviews. Always finding new ways to better herself, and her family's future, Vanessa has also drawn upon her more artistic abilities and has established herself as a commissioned artist, showing publicly at Loyola University, Chicago, in September 2018. In January of 2019, she founded Perfect Trust Productions LLC and recruited trusted friend and investigator, Gwen Clapper. By January of 2020, Vanessa was named as the newest member of Beyond Perception Investigators. A paranormal team whom she had worked extensively with for several years. With over 400 investigations under her belt, her books and art, Vanessa is proving there are no limits too high to reach. She has done this all while raising a son and holding down 2 jobs!

Lisa's Adventure Club: Blarney Castle (0:00:00) This week, in honor of St. Patrick's Day coming up, we are exploring one of Ireland's greatest treasures: Blarney Castle. This castle is famous for its lush gardens, rich history, and famous kissing of the “blarney stone”. Here to help us explore this world landmark is Paul O'Sullivan, the marketing manager from Blarney Castle who is joining us all the way from Ireland. Tough Breakups (0:13:40) Breakups are an important part of growing and finding the partner that fits with you best. Sometimes, we can look back on these experiences and laugh. But in the moment, they're incredibly painful! So how can we get over and move on from a hard breakup to find happiness with someone else? Joining us on the show today is Kimberly Seltzer, a certified therapist, dating coach, and matchmaker. She's going to teach us the ins and outs of the complex breakup process and how to use it for our own growth. Creative Economy (0:33:38) Have you ever heard of the “Creative Economy”? According to Stanford Social Innovation Review, the creative economy are industries “that lie at the crossroads of arts, culture, business, and technology.” In this economy, you can turn your creative ideas into a profitable endeavor or a career. This includes a whole range of careers from photography to computer gaming. So what is the significance of the creative economy and how does it play a role in our everyday lives? We are joined today by the author of “The Creative Economy: How People Make Money from Ideas,” John Howkins. Coronavirus and Sick Days (0:50:36) Ever since the Coronavirus broke loose, we've seen people respond in a variety of ways. Many in hysteria have made a mad dash to places like Costco to stock up on toilet paper and water. Others have ordered mass amounts of face masks, which the surgeon general told people to stop buying for the sake of sick hospital patients. None of these items are likely to protect you from the virus, but all health professionals can concur that the best things you can do to stay safe are wash your hands, don't touch your face and most importantly... stay home if you're sick. But what about the people who can't afford to take a sick day? Here to share her thoughts on the subject is Alex Baptiste of the National Partnership for Women and Families. Mini Book Club: Great Authors (1:03:54) Rachel Wadham, of BYU Radio's Worlds Awaiting, talks with Lisa and Richie about the best authors whose work is worth checking out. Spending Less Time on Your Hair (1:26:02) Daylight saving was this weekend meaning that we lost a whole hour of precious beauty sleep. With that in mind, the idea of getting up early to make sure you have time to style your hair doesn't sound fun! Having some tricks up your sleeve to cut down on your hair routine can be especially helpful as we have busy mornings and we're trying to get as much sleep as possible. We're talking with Michelle Lindsay about how we can spend less time on our hair. Michelle is a hair stylist, color expert, and an instructor for L'oreal Professionnel.
Paul O'Sullivan discusses Blarney Castle, Kim Seltzer gives tips for moving on after a breakup, John Howkins explains the creative economy, Alex Baptiste gives advice for those without paid sick days, Rachel Wadham lists the best authors, Michelle Lindsay gives tips for doing hair faster.
This Week on Spooky In-Laws, we talk about the History and Legend that surrounds the Blarney Castle and the sick and twisted things done by the possible Serial Killer, Madame LaLaurie. If you have any stories you would like us to cover you can email us at Spookyinlaws@gmail.com!

Anyone considering an Ireland family vacation will be looking for the best things to do in Ireland with kids. We would be extremely grateful! iTunes is a search engine as well, and so when you rate and review us, you help others find us. Thank you! ::: Ireland with Kids: Building an Ireland Family Vacation Itinerary Meet Jody Halsted, manager of the Ireland Family Vacations blog and a regular visitor to the Emerald Isle. Jody goes to Ireland with kids every year, and she still hasn’t seen it all. For a country the size of the US state of Indiana, Ireland is a culturally dense place to explore, with plenty of fun for the entire family. In this episode of Epic Education Radio, we discuss the food, the festivals and the fun that Ireland offers to families. Why Ireland with Kids? Ireland is full of fun, exciting and educational opportunities for traveling families. There are castles and stories of princesses and fairies. There are festivals, music, and art. In addition, Ireland has a history steeped in science and literature. Writers, scholars, astronomers and other scientists called Ireland home. Their stories are waiting to be explored in Ireland with kids. Then there are the beautiful nature walks and the filming locations. Ireland’s natural beauty is unique in the world. That’s one reason why movies like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and TV shows like HBO’s Game of Thrones filmed here. In addition to all this, Ireland is safe and full of friendly English-speaking people. Therefore, there is no language barrier for visitors from North America, Australia and elsewhere. Despite this, she says, Ireland family travel is not a focus of Ireland Tourism Board. There are families who want to explore Ireland with teens. There are young parents who want to visit Ireland with toddlers. However, Jody says that the country markets mainly to older travelers and honeymooners. Families just aren’t their target demographic. This is an opportunity that Jody has taken advantage of. With her site, Ireland Family Vacations, she helps families who want to visit Ireland with children get the most out of their time there. In today’s episode, we discuss her travel tips for a great Ireland family vacation itinerary. Listen in for many fun and educational opportunities in Ireland for kids. Best Times to Visit Ireland with Kids Weather-wise, there is no one distinct season to visit Ireland with children. That said, there will be some rain almost every day, so plan your wardrobe accordingly. Even in the middle of summer, you should plan for the chance of wet weather and cooler temperatures. Weather aside, Jody recommended visiting in the shoulder seasons. July and August are peak times. With this in mind, consider visiting Ireland with kids in May/June or in September. During these shoulder seasons, you’ll find smaller crowds and slightly better weather. Events in Ireland for Kids Jody talks about the music festivals and the Christmas Markets in Ireland. Whether you’re in Ireland with babies or in Ireland with teens, there will always be something great to see and do. We also talk about St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland, which is quite different than what many people might expect. Many an Ireland family vacation itinerary includes Saint Patrick's Day in Dublin or elsewhere. Yet you should be aware that it is not the booze-fueled party that you may find in North America. Sure, a lot of bars in the big cities are cashing in on the holiday’s notorious reputation. But you can enjoy Saint Patrick’s Day in Ireland with children without going on a beer-guzzling bender. For many Irish families, St. Patrick'ds Day is a holy day. In fact, for many places in Ireland, the pubs are closed and people are at home having a feast with their families. Food in Ireland for Kids When considering Ireland family travel, many parents want to know about food options. In case you’re wondering, yes, you’ll find lots of potato dishes when you visit Ireland, but as Jody explains, there is much more than that. Most of Ireland is rural, she explains, so you can expect much of the menu items to be local. Local vegetables, meats, and fish, in particular. Picky eaters will find chicken cutlets, shepherd's pie and fish and chips just about everywhere, and menus are clearly marked for allergies. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, she says, just ask. There’s a good chance that they can whip up some standard dishes for you off-menu. 10 Days in Ireland with Kids: Ireland Travel Itinerary Jody has discovered that most people are looking for a nine to ten-day Ireland family vacation itinerary. That's usually five weekdays bookended by two weekends. Most people fly in and out of Dublin. But if you want to see more, she recommends starting in Dublin but then flying out of Shannon or Cork. Dublin with Kids You could spend your entire trip in and around Dublin with kids if you wanted, says Jody. There is so much to do in Dublin with children, but Ireland is more than its capital city! If your Ireland travel itinerary is around ten days, then spend two days or less in Dublin with children. One of her top recommendations here is the Museum of Archaeology. You can be in Ireland with tweens, teens, or toddlers, and you’ll find something interesting here. More recommendations on Dublin for kids in the interview. Cork with Kids or Kilkenny with Kids? After leaving Dublin, Jody says it’s time to make some decisions. With limited time, you may need to decide between visiting Cork or Kilkenny. In Cork, you have the Blarney Castle, the Black Rock Castle, and all of the history of the Titanic’s Voyage. You also have the tour of the Jamison Factory. Whiskey drinker or not, Jody says that this is a surprisingly interesting tour (I know I love visiting similar places). In Kilkenny, you have one of the only round towers where you can climb all the way to the top. In addition, Kilkenny has something special for sports fans: hurling. This Irish sport resembles something between rugby and field hockey, and you can watch a game in Kilkenny. Killarney, Limerick, & Much More From here, Jody describes so many more things to do in Ireland with kids. We talk about the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula. She tells me about the Bunratty Castle and its historical reenactments. We also discuss the merits and dangers of visiting Skellig Michael. This is the UNESCO Heritage site where Star Wars: The Last Jedi was filmed, but it's not built for tourism. (Spoiler alert: don’t visit with little kids). There is one of the most information-rich episodes I’ve ever recorded. If you’re planning am Ireland travel itinerary — or know someone who is — then this is the episode for you. I simply can’t write it all down here. Listen in and hear for yourself! Timecodes: In This Episode 02:36 Intro 03:39 Homeschooling 05:27 Why Visit Ireland? I especially love Celtic rock and you have a special hour just on that with bands I’m mostly unfamiliar with! Ed Miller used to host a Celtic segment on Austin’s NPR station, but he NEVER played anything with bagpipes. I have a theory that Ed Miller doesn’t like the bagpipes. But you, Marc, you aren’t afraid of anything!" You're very welcome Robert. That's one of the many things I love about this podcast. The diversity. That is what truly makes America great. A few years ago, I published my CD How America Saved Irish Music (listen to show #169). The main part of the story is that the Irish diaspora preserved traditional Irish music, which made it's way back to Ireland. But the other aspect is that we are melting pot of different cultures. And all of those influences end up in contemporary Irish & Celtic music, whether you're talking about rock'n'roll, R&B, jazz, country, bluegrass, hip hop, electronica. And it's brilliant. The traditional culture is important but so are the changes that affect the music every day. Without it, I would be playing the same 12 bands over and over again. As for Ed Miller, I love that theory. And I have a few vague memories of him cracking jokes about bagpipes which may confirm your hypothesis. If you're like Ed Miller or just like Ed Miller's music, he has a radio program called Across the Pond. It comes out on Sundays from 6-8 PM on Sunradio in Austin. And I *think* you can listen to it online. The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast exists on the generosity of our Patrons of the Podcast. I am a Celtic and Geek musician and podcaster. This podcast is dedicated to indie Celtic music. These are the bands who are usually trying to make it without a record label. I have a caveat about that today. I'll tell you about it in a moment. I want to ask for your help to bring these artists the attention they deserve by sharing the show with your friends. You can find more episodes at celticmusicpodcast.com. And you can support for this show on Patreon. There are a lot of small record labels who are doing great things for Celtic musicians. One of those is Temple Records. That's the label of Battlefield Band. In addition to releasing music by Battlefield Band, the label also helps small artists who are doing great things for Scottish music. Like Christine Primrose. About the time I was finishing up the 2-hour Scottish Music show, episode #317, Temple Records sent me music from Christine Primrose. She sings in Scots Gaelic I thought she'd be a great addition to the show. I asked if they had any other music. But I didn't receive anything until the day after I published the show. So today, I'm gonna highlight several artists from Temple Records, including the first band. * CELTIC PODCAST NEWS I want start by thanking everyone who picked up the 2017 Sainted Song Henger Special and collected the 10 bonus CDs from my Celtic music arhive. Tony Becket setup this website "to restore awareness, celebrate and preserve the culture and history of Celtic Americans by promoting live Celtic music, festivals, history & ancestry." He's working primarily with Northern California Celtic performers. And he has a YouTube channel which could use your love. Celtic music and culture is a relatively small community. I mean, if all of the Scottish, Irish, and Welsh ancestry people united, we'd have one heck of a cultural impact. Instead, it's limited mostly to St. Patrick's Day. That's a shame. So I'd like to ask your help of spreading the word about AmeriCeltic. And I'd also encourage you to start your own local Celtic community. Help get the word out about your musicians and cultural organizations. Let's keep Celtic culture growing! And if you have a local organization, let me know. I'd be happy to either mention it here, or better yet, list it in our Celtic Music Magazine. * I WANT YOUR FEEDBACK: What are you doing today while listening to the podcast? I came from Paris to support Ben for a historical fencing competition followed by walking across the west coast of Ireland. Sadly I just lost my personal phone so I had no music to listen to and no Internet outside of our B&B. So I was looking for some podcasts. I discovered yours! It was a pleasure to listen to your playlist all week, during the competition and then on the wonderful cliffs of Black Head walking to Moher, in the bus to Dublin, in the plane back to Paris and finally, in my tub with a little tear thinking about this incredible trip and awesome people. Peter Donegan chats with Ballycommane House and Gardens owners Ingolf Jungmann and Andy Stieglitz. With very special thanks to Bev and Miriam of West Cork Garden Trail this was a little bit of a treat. Set on a landscape of about 4 acres, Andy and Ingolf hold around 1000 exotic native shrubs and trees chosen from literally the world over. In context, they include subtropical palms, bananas, tea trees, tree ferns and myrtles. They further specialise in growing their own collections from the southern hemisphere (Gondwana flora) and the Azores. But Ballycommane is a little more than that. It is the owners, the out buildings, the homemade cakes and fine coffee and the attention and detail given to the landscape that surrounds it. And, I not only visited there when invited by West Cork Garden Trail, but I some months later then returned to visit with my good friends Anthony and Darren when I went camping with them. One of the coolest things about the trip for me was learning more about the Celts before they settled in seven Celtic nations. I emailed my Celtic Invasion Vacations subscribers telling them I was considering adding another Invasion to Venice. One person responded saying it made no sense. Because what does Venice have to do with the Celts. The answer is a lot more than you would think. In fact, we learned in Brittany that one of the main Celtic tribes to settle the area near Vannes were the Veneti. If you follow the place names of where the Celts settled, one area was the Veneto. My step-dad is from Padova in the Veneto. Ever since I started playing Celtic music, he's experienced the Celtic influence in the Veneto which settled the region in the 9th and 10th century B.C. By the 3rd century b.c. they had migrated to Brittany in France. There's even a Po River in Carnac. The Po River is one of the main rivers in the Veneto. The list goes on and on. I'll try and do an episode of The Celtfather podcast with more details. Needless to say, it was a fascinating glimpse of history. It's amazing to realize Celtic culture can be found throughout Europe. If you want to experience more of the trip, I recorded a bunch of videos and set them to my music. Full transcript for this screencast is available at http://www.karelia.com/sandvox/screencast_transcript.html This is the text for Chapter 1: A day in the life… Hello and welcome to this screencast Introduction to Sandvox, the powerful, playful and intuitive website creation application from Karelia Software. In this screencast I’ll be showcasing many of Sandvox's creative features. To get started, I’ll show what it's like in the "day in the life" of a Sandvox website. Here on the Desktop is my Sandvox document. Let’s open it. This is a website I’ll build from scratch later, one that recounts my family’s summer trip to Ireland. For now, to get an overview of how Sandvox works, let's add a new page, make some simple edits, and publish those changes. This main document window is how you'll work with most aspects of your site. At the top we have a standard Mac OS X toolbar with icons to help us add pages, create links, and so on. Here on the left hand side we have our Site Outline, which shows all the pages of my site; the home page is at the top. The rest of the window is the WebView, which shows us the content of whatever page we have selected in the Site Outline, just as it would look in the Safari web browser. The first thing I’ll do is edit the content of the “about” page, which explains the purpose of this site. I’ll select “About” in the Site Outline. Now it displays that page in the WebView. To start editing, I click on the area of the text I want to change. For this page I’ll just remove a paragraph, and add another in its place. Then I’ll work in some basic styling. I’ll select some text and make it bold by selecting “bold” from the Format menu Next, I'll add some hyperlinks. I want to link the word “pictures” to the photo album I created, so I highlight that text and click on "Create link" in the toolbar. A little panel opens up. If you want to link to another website, you would type or paste in a URL . But since I need this link to go to another page on my own site, I drag this target icon to the site outline, and connect it to the page I want to link to. To close the link panel I click in some other part of the window. Notice when I hover over that link, I see where it’s linked to, down on the status bar at the bottom of the window, just like in Safari. For my last edit, I’ll add an entry about my day trip to Blarney Castle to the weblog. A weblog can be thought of as an online journal; a collection of articles with the most recent entries at the top. Adding a new entry to an existing weblog is very easy to do. I’ll add a text page from the popup menu in the toolbar, and then type the entry directly into Sandvox. Now, with all of my editing done, I’m ready to publish, so I click on the publish icon in the toolbar. From Sandvox you can publish to any web host, or even your own computer. This site is already setup to upload to an FTP site. If you’re curious about publication settings, they will be reviewed in detail toward the end of this screencast. When uploading is finished, I can visit the site. There it is in Safari; and there are my changes. This covers what “a day in the life” of a Sandvox website is like. Over the next few chapters of this screencast we'll recreate this website in Sandvox from scratch, demonstrating how to: • Create a new site; • Manage content with pages, pagelets, and collections; • Add and manage a weblog as well as albums of photos and movies; • Setup publishing; • And look at some advanced features.
