What would YOU like to hear about on Bloomberg? Help make shows like ours even better by taking our Bloomberg audience survey.Your morning briefing, the business news you need in just 15 minutes. On today's podcast: (1) Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves delivered a massive package of tax hikes alongside plans to ramp up public investment in a historic first budget that aimed to revive the UK economy — but fell short of delivering a major boost to its growth prospects. (2) Labour's first budget in over a decade raises taxes by £40 billion a year to fund a £70 billion annual increase in public spending. The plan marks a shift back to big state economics, with spending as a share of GDP set to be 5 percentage points higher than before the pandemic. (3) Shell kept up the pace of its share buybacks after profit fell less than expected amid rising sales volumes of natural gas. (4) Microsoft shares dropped in late trading after the software maker forecast slower quarterly cloud revenue growth, reflecting the company's struggle to bring data centers online fast enough to keep up with demand for artificial intelligence services. (5) Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg will ramp up heavy investments in AI and other futuristic technologies, continuing a years-long tug-of-war between the company's long-term bets and the core advertising business that provides the vast majority of Meta's revenue. (6) Starbucks' new Chief Executive Officer Brian Niccol, addressing investors for the first time since taking the company's helm, laid out his vision of strategic changes to reboot the struggling coffee chain — from reining in drink customization to revising the staffing model.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Keir Starmer has promised change – but what form will it take? And could it mean the return to the concept of the so-called ‘Big State'? Will Labour's proposed plans for increased public ownership and workers' rights be the transformation Britain so desperately needs – or could an interventionist approach do more harm than good? This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to discuss the 1998 Spike Lee film, "He Got Game" starring Denzel Washington and Ray Allen. The film explores the intricate dynamics of the Shuttlesworth family, centered around the promising high-school basketball player, Jesus Shuttlesworth. Jesus is at a crossroads, pursued by the nation's top college basketball programs while navigating the return of his father, Jake, a convicted felon released temporarily to persuade him to join the governor's alma mater - "Big State."As the father and son grapple with a troubled past marked by loss, anger, and resentment, we witness flashbacks revealing the intense basketball training Jesus underwent under Jake and the tragic night that changed their lives forever. Parallel to the Shuttlesworth's story runs a heartfelt subplot of Dakota Barns, a woman trapped in a cycle of abuse, finding solace and aid in Jake, fostering a connection that speaks to the themes of redemption and hope.Despite the turmoil and the gravity of Jake's mission, the estranged family finds themselves wrestling with moral dilemmas and the harsh realities of their individual situations. As the deadline nears, a high-stakes basketball game between father and son becomes the crucible where futures are decided. In a world rife with corruption, temptation, and betrayal, will the bonds of family prevail?Join us on this emotional journey as we delve deep into a story of lost and regained connections, sacrifices, and the harsh truths about redemption and forgiveness in "He Got Game."
State universities used to be bargains – these days, not so much. So where are those big schools spending students' skyrocketing tuition? Wall Street Journal higher education reporter Melissa Korn joins host Krys Boyd to discuss a look into 50 flagship state universities and how inflows of cash are not necessarily benefiting students – and how those schools justify their decisions. Her article is “Colleges spend like there's no tomorrow.”

Manhattan-based actor and writer Mike Mekus returns to the show for a discussion of one of Spike Lee's most underrated films, 1998's basketball drama He Got Game starring Denzel Washington and NBA player Ray Allen. Denzel is Jake Shuttlesworth, a convict secretly released from Attica by order of the warden to try to get his son Jesus, a future NBA star, to sign a letter of intent to play college ball for the Governor's alma mater “Big State”. But Jesus is estranged from his father and under great pressure to either sign with a competing college (the aggressive “Tech U”) or head straight to the pros from high school. He Got Game is a film about American exploitation in its many forms, and as messy as it can be, it contains many sequences of great power and beauty, filmed primarily around Coney Island in Brooklyn. It's also a film from the brief period at Touchstone Pictures where Disney was making complex movies for grownups made by great filmmakers. We discuss several aspects of the film including Spike's use of music (the inspired pairing of Aaron Copland with Public Enemy) and his perennial blind spot: the portrayal of his female characters. Texas has a strong history of growth since the final boundaries of the state were agreed upon in 1850 and the US Census Bureau began counting Texan's heads and collecting place of birth information. An in-migration magnet since 1850, Texas now ranks number two in attracting newcomers, number one in population growth in 2019. The first 2020 statistics are just starting to filter in. So let's look at a complete set of statistics from 2019. The US Census Bureau puts those who moved to Texas in 2019 at a whopping 559,661 people, or 1551 new people moving to the state per day. Only Florida's move-in count is higher at 601,611. Although data for 2020 isn't available yet, any Texan paying attention to home sales and cars on the road would predict strong in-migration numbers for last year. While move-ins from other states and countries fuel growth, there is another factor in the state's increasing population. A bit less than half of the total population growth is from “natural increase.” That's a statistic defined as births minus deaths.

The presidential election, understandably, has drawn much of the attention of the media and the public following Election Day. But there also were more than 6,000 state legislators on the ballot and more than 120 statewide ballot measures. Some would argue those elections will have more effect on the life of the average American than those at the top of the ticket. One of those people is Tim Storey, executive director of NCSL and a close observer of state legislative contests for decades. Even after the election, policymakers in Washington, D.C., are likely to remain gridlocked and the real action will be in state legislatures, Storey says. He breaks down the results of the election and how it will affect redistricting, action on the pandemic and the economy, and more. Our second guest in Amanda Zoch, an NCSL expert on statewide ballot measures, who takes us through what passed, what it says about the policy concerns of Americans and a few of the more unusual measures that voters said yes to on Election Day. Labour's traditional working class supporters are abandoning the party in their droves. But can Labour win them back without alienating the middle-class voters it needs to win the next election? David Goodhart explores the tensions between two traditions in the Labour movement - a liberal wing focussed on equality and diversity and a conservative strand that is more concerned with issues of solidarity and community. And he examines the new Blue Labour school of thought, which believes that the best way to unite the two traditions is to rethink the Big State approach that became a defining element of the post-war Labour Party's identity.
