Part 2: Patricia and Christian continue their conversation with economist, author, and founder of Modern Money Lab Professor Professor Steven Hail about the well-intentioned (taxing the rich is good!) but counter-productive call for a wealth tax to “fund” life-saving support for vulnerable people (needlessly waiting for the rich to cough up while people suffer and die is bad!) and, of course - those beautiful tariffs. Pat looks at the rising national debt and its recent history, and why many economists feel rising taxes are the only way to try and dig out of it. Later he looks at how to preserve the money you have saved in IRAs and 401Ks, especially as it involves tax planning to try and avoid future tax increases.
On this episode of America's Talking, Casey Harper, D.C. Bureau Chief for The Center Square, is joined by Carolyn Bourdeaux, Executive Director at Concord Action. (The Center Square) – As Americans file their taxes at the last minute this April 15, the federal debt – and Americans' federal debt burden – continues to grow. While the federal government reports a national debt nearing $37 trillion, one budget watchdog says the figure is actually much higher: $158.6 trillion, amounting to $974,000 for each federal taxpayer. Truth in Accounting, a nonprofit budget accountability group that emphasizes a different approach to government accounting, released those figures, arguing that they more accurately represent the fiscal situation of the federal government.Support this podcast: https://secure.anedot.com/franklin-news-foundation/ce052532-b1e4-41c4-945c-d7ce2f52c38a?source_code=xxxxxxFull story: https://www.thecentersquare.com/national/article_9fe2aaac-eba8-45ac-be32-67be2d90fb35.html

Church pension plans may be at risk I hate to say this because we all want to believe that one of the safest places to go is church. Unfortunately, there are church pension plans like Saint Claire's Hospital in Schenectady, New York and Saint Joseph Hospital in Rhode Island that had no or very little money left for retirees when it was time for their retirement. You may be wondering how can that be? Pension plans should be safe especially under federal law where there are protections from the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, which is commonly known as ERISA. You may also think if you know something about pension plans that employers must pay into the pension benefit guarantee corporation or what is also known as the PBGC. Unfortunately, when the government came up with the federal law on pension plans to protect retirees, there was concern about the constitutional separation of church and state and they did not want to cross that line. So they exempted churches and employers related to the church, which would include schools, hospitals and publishers. Church pension plans are allowed to contribute to the pension benefit guarantee corporation, but they're not required to and unfortunately most do not. It is sad that we cannot trust some of our religious leaders to protect our financial future. If you or someone you know works for a type of association related to a church and they have a pension plan they may want to dig deep into it to make sure it's really there. Unfortunately, there have been church pension plans that have exaggerated the returns on their investments in their pension plan and ultimately collapsed when people began retiring. It may be unfortunate but it could be wise to have a secondary retirement plan if you work for a church just to be on the safe side so you have something there in your golden years! Structured products are back from 2008 Structured products that destroyed the economy in 2008 are back once again. In 2008 there was nearly $1.8 trillion of structured products issued. For 2025, the experts are forecasting structured product issuance of $2 trillion. If you don't understand what a structure product is, it is nothing fancy other than Wall Street creating loans that hide their true value. In 2008 these were mainly mortgage-backed loans that Wall Street sold and told people there's no way that these borrowers would default on their real estate loans. Today, they are even riskier with the loans backed by weak assets such as credit card debt, lease payments on cars, airplanes, golf carts and even plastic surgery loans. Recently in Las Vegas there was a convention for four days that was packed with bankers from Wall Street and around the country that were all in the buzz about the hype of the profits they can make off of these structured products. So far investors have been safe and have not had any losses, but that will change in the years to come especially if the economy weakens. With higher demand, prices for these products are now higher and I believe overpriced. The higher demand also creates riskier investments that look similar to products with less risk but make no mistake, they have far greater risk. It appears to me that the greed on Wall Street is back and the bankers are trying to tell you that stock investing is out. They tell you that you should be putting your money into these structured products for diversification to avoid market fluctuations, but the real reason for this is the fees they make are so much higher than if you just invested in good quality equities that pay dividends and grow over the long-term. Wall Street makes nothing off of that! Jobs report seems uneventful, which is a good thing February nonfarm payrolls increased by 151k in the month, which was less than the estimate of 170k. While I wouldn't say that's a positive, it was better than last month's reading of 125k and it still shows the labor market remained healthy. Revisions to th

Watch the video version on YouTube. The U.S election is just a few short weeks away, and many investors are picking through campaign-trail noise to decipher what policies each administration would pursue and their implications. With both Former President Trump's and Vice President Harris's campaigns promising hefty amounts of spending but few clues on how it will be funded, the longer-term trajectory for taxes, the deficit and federal debt is largely uncertain, but must be addressed. According to the Congressional Budget Office, U.S. debt held by the public as a percent of GDP is expected to increase from a likely 98% in fiscal 2024 to over 120% in 2034. This assumes that provisions from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act sunset as scheduled and increase taxes by $4 trillion at the end of 2025. If these tax cuts are extended, however, debt held by the public could rise to 130% of GDP over the same period. Regardless, policies from either side of the aisle will impact the fiscal health of the United States, and as a result, the balance of risks and opportunities that investors must consider when building portfolios. Gabriela Santos, Chief Market Strategist for the Americas, is back with Dr. David Kelly, Chief Global Strategist here at J.P. Morgan Asset Management, to discuss the different paths forward for fiscal policy. Phillip Patrick is a Precious Metals Specialist at Birch Gold. Since the federal government's fiscal year ended on September 30th, we've finally gotten a full accounting. Can you run through the numbers for us? A big part of that growth came from interest payments on the debt. Just how bad is it? There's a lot of hand-wringing over the growth of federal debt from fiscal conservatives. The left say things like, "No big deal, it's just money we owe ourselves." Does a growing federal debt affect the real economy? The central bank gold buying has been setting records for the last two years. Why is that?

Tom welcomes back economist John Williams, the founder of Shadow Government Statistics to explore the manipulation and misrepresentation of economic data by government institutions like the Fed and Treasury. Williams expresses concerns over the intentional distortion of inflation and GDP statistics, which can deceive the public and impact their decisions, potentially harming the economy and markets. A notable example is the strategic petroleum reserve being drained to artificially lower gasoline prices before elections. Accurate data, Williams asserts, is vital for informed policymaking and avoiding exacerbated economic issues. Inaccurate inflation statistics are in part leading to financial hardships for many households. Despite this issue's potential political significance, no candidate has addressed it. He also explores the consequences of this discrepancy and its impact on consumer sentiment, suggesting that a future political campaign platform focusing on this could gain substantial support. Conversing about the potential economic pain or increased debt needed to rectify these issues, Williams acknowledges the challenges but stresses their necessity for improving conditions for the average American. Williams raises concerns about the reliability of reported GDP figures, arguing they are heavily manipulated and bear little connection to real economic conditions. He highlights the disparity between reported GDP and underlying economic indicators like retail sales, industrial production, and housing starts, attributing this gap to political constructs and the Fed's money supply expansion. Williams warns of potential risks from an inflationary recession or depression and encourages individuals to protect themselves by holding physical assets like gold, real estate, or other hard assets. He concludes that average citizens should be concerned about economic instability arising from these factors. John suggests that a recession already began during the pandemic and consumers should use common sense when evaluating government information. Watch the video version on YouTube. Deficit spending is not at all a new phenomenon in the United States. In fact, it is the norm, and the U.S. has run a budget deficit in 81 of the last 95 years, or 85% of the time since 1929. What is abnormal, however, is how large the pile of U.S. debt has grown relative to the broader economy. In fiscal year 2023, U.S. debt held by the public ballooned to $26.3tn, or a striking 97% of GDP, while the budget deficit rose to 6.2% of GDP, and projections from the Congressional Budget Office suggest that the debt dilemma may only get worse in the coming years. With the election quickly approaching, and last year's debt ceiling and downgrade drama still fresh in investors' minds, we often get asked “How will rising federal debt impact the markets and the economy?” To help us dive deeper into this question, Brandon Hall, Research Analyst, interviews the usual host of the show, Dr. David Kelly, Chief Global Strategist for J.P. Morgan Asset Management.
Jane Johnson, a retired instructor of economics, discusses the bipartisan lack of interest in the federal debt and what it means for our future, as well as what may be in store for American higher education. Sponsors: &

The importance of any piece of economic information depends on your time horizon. For traders, the issue is how it will move markets today. For politicians, its relevance lies in how it could shape public opinion between now and the next election. However, for long-term investors, what really matters is how it will impact the economic and financial environment for decades to come. From this last viewpoint, there is no more important topic than the continued deterioration in the federal finances. Information released in the last few days provides an updated perspective on this issue. However, before delving into this, let's take a quick look at upcoming economic data.

Many human trafficking survivors are coerced to incur consumer debt at the behest of their traffickers. This destroys the survivor's credit and imposes significant barriers to housing, education and other important resources. The new federal Debt Bondage Repair Act provides a mechanism for survivors of trafficking to block this adverse information from their credit reports. Questions? Inquiries about program materials? Contact Trenon Browne at tbrowne@bostonbar.org This webinar will provide an overview of the federal law, its accompanying regulations, and potential pathways to implementation in Massachusetts, including the critical role to be played by government agencies in enhancing access to this process. The speakers will also address ways that legal counsel, advocates and social service providers can assist survivors in accessing this important protection in the near term. Additionally, this program will be relevant for government lawyers, pro bono programs and all lawyers and service providers who work with survivors of human trafficking.
Tom welcomes back David Skarica, publisher and founder of Stockchart of the Day, about a potential threat to market stability. Skarica sees increased frothiness in the market, with Bitcoin ETFs being launched and widespread optimism about Bitcoin reaching 150k - 300k, similar to the behavior seen in 2017 and 2021. He warns that investors should be cautious about the current state of the market and consider investing in assets that can protect their wealth during market downturns. Skarica points out that the top 10 largest stocks now account for 29% of total market cap, similar to the height of market bubbles, with stocks like NVIDIA and Apple trading based on growth rather than sales. He suggests looking at NVIDIA's chart and other related stocks to understand the market better. The US government has been issuing more short-term debt instead of taking advantage of low long-term interest rates, which could lead to problems when the debt needs to be rolled over in the future. The market is demanding higher returns on US debt due to increasing debt levels and higher spending, leading to a potential sovereign debt crisis in the US. Commodities and gold markets are also anticipating this potential crisis, with commodities near resistance levels and gold breaking out. Skarica discusses the reissuing of debt and the potential for a shorter maturity on those bonds due to the real rate of return. He notes that there is currently more demand for two-year treasury bonds, which have a fixed market and yield 4.6%, compared to 10-year bonds, which are subject to price fluctuations and have lower yields. Skarica warns of the risk of buying long-term bonds, as demonstrated by the TLT ETF, which has decreased in value by 40% while only offering a 0.5% yield. David discusses the potential convergence of various economic cycles, including a debt cycle and a Dow theory cycle, and what this could mean for the price of gold and the capital expenditure (CAPEX) cycle in the mining industry. He suggests that loose monetary policy and QE tend to lead to investment in sectors that were not the focus of the previous market bubble, such as emerging markets, commodities, and inflation-protected sectors. DoubleLine's Jeff Mayberry and Eric Dhall review the market week (1:00) ended Feb. 9, 2024, including a new all-time high carrying the S&P 500 to close above 5000 for the first time, yields up across the investment grade segments of the fixed income universe and a higher week for the Bloomberg Commodity Index, although accompanied by a decline in industrial metals. Macro news for the week (4:39) includes a strong ISM Services report but in general tighter financial conditions indicated in the Federal Reserve's Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey of Bank Lending Practices. For their Topic of the Week (11:21), Jeff and Eric discuss the U.S. Treasury's quarterly refunding announcement in the context of an explosion of the national debt to $34.2 trillion – a pace of debt growth that on Feb. 7 drew a warning from the Congressional Budget Office. Falling Treasury purchases by foreign governments, Jeff Maberry notes, means yield-sensitive investors such as insurers account for a larger share of Uncle Sam's creditors. Their bond vigilantism means more upward pressure on interest rates. Looking ahead to the week of Feb. 12-16, Jeff and Eric single out (21:27) above all the January print of consumer price index, due Tuesday Feb. 13. They will also be on the lookout for retail sales, import prices and jobless claims (Thursday) and housing starts and the January producer price index (Friday).
Every January, firms throughout the financial industry, including our own, hold annual training meetings or conferences. One of the highlights of these meetings is an award for salesperson or sales team of the year. These titles are hard-earned and well-deserved. At least for our own firm, I can say that the winners are always those who, not only achieve impressive revenues for the firm, but do so through very hard work, understanding the investment environment and, most of all, understanding the needs of our clients.

The U.S. government remains open this Thanksgiving week, thanks to a temporary funding deal Congress passed last week. But that deal starts to expire in January and conservatives are signaling they won't pass another funding deal without addressing the swelling national debt. Geoff Bennett and Lisa Desjardins take a look at the big numbers. PBS NewsHour is supported by - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/about/funders

Republican Mitch Daniels, the former governor of Indiana and president of Purdue University, sits down with Margaret Hoover to discuss the dangers of rising federal debt, education reform, and fixing America's broken politics. Daniels, who worked for Ronald Reagan and served as director of President George W. Bush's Office of Management and Budget, reflects on the nation's failure under both Democratic and Republican administrations to rein in spending and reform programs like Social Security and Medicare–and he warns those decisions will have ‘unjust and unfair' consequences. After holding tuition at Purdue steady for over a decade, Daniels explains how he did it and what other schools can learn from it. He also addresses the challenges college administrators have faced responding to the October 7th Hamas attack in Israel and the inflammatory student protests that followed on some campuses. Daniels, who resisted calls to run for president in 2012 and for Indiana's open Senate seat in 2024, assesses a likely Trump-Biden rematch for the presidency and the prospects for a No Labels candidate to challenge them. He also offers advice for whoever wins the election to help move the country forward. Congressional leaders will meet with President Joe Biden next week to discuss the federal debt ceiling as they face a looming deadline to avoid a default on U.S. debt obligations. The Treasury Department has warned that if an agreement isn't reached prior to June 1, there could be severe implications for global markets and the U.S. economy. The federal debt ceiling has been in place for more than a hundred years. But it's been the subject of consistent conflicts internally between congressional leaders and the White House for more than a decade now. We discuss debt ceiling and potential solutions to avoid a government default. It's the first installment of our ongoing series with Bloomberg: Life and Debt.Want to support 1A?
