This is more of a serious episode, friends. In light of the Uvalde shooting, we looked back at a classic documentary about gun violence in America. We talk abut the economic effect of guns in America, what contributes to gun violence, and how the media's focus on fear affects our daily lives (including our economic choices). We listened to Chris Rock's comedic take on bullet control and pondered what the world would look like if bullets cost $5,000 apiece. Regardless of what side of the gun debate you fall on, we hope you'll listen in and let us know your thoughts. Stay safe, everybody. In this episode, Desmond and Shama discuss Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine (2002). In this episode, we discuss a recent Toronto police shooting of a man who was reportedly carrying a rifle. Initially, Ontario's Special Investigations Unit reported that the SIU recovered a BB gun at the scene. Shortly after our recording, the SIU corrected itself and reported that the item recovered at the scene was a pellet gun. Neither weapon is a firearm. We note the updated info here for accuracy, and the notes below include an updated news story. We tackle a Michael Moore documentary for the 3rd time on this channel in this 425th Ellises' Analysis and this movie is about as politically divisive as anything the funny activist has ever made. The man has been remarkably influential from the beginning of his career, but especially after this highly successful documentary came out and asked if America is full of gun nuts...or are they just nuts. Why IS America so cuckoo for guns and, worse, tend to use them so often on their fellow Americans? Of course, we agree with Moore's views and his message in Bowling For Columbine, but unfortunately his execution is messy, especially in the unsatisfying ending with Charlton Heston. So the picture is far from perfect, but the issue is too…and it's become an even bigger problem than it was 20 years ago. So deliver your speech to rich movie stars at lavish ceremonies despite boos raining down on you as we dole out the dealio in Bowling For Columbine. Just in time for the 93rd Academy Awards, Jordan continues this Hollywood-themed podcast with cinephile friend, Claire. For Part II, Jordan and Claire give the Academy credit where credit is due and list off their favorite Award wins and nominations. Following that, the conversation gets meta! Jordan and Claire observe the behind-the-scenes politics of the 74th Academy Awards Ceremony (the first ceremony to air after the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks) as well as the 75th (the show that aired days after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq). They also work in a few jabs at other Academy controversies because there have been plenty of ‘em in the years since! It remains to be seen whether Jordan or Claire will ever win their own Academy Awards in this lifetime, so they instead conclude by asking the age-old question, “Do the Awards even matter?” (The answer being…maybe?) On Tuesday, March 23rd, when a young American man went on a shooting rampage at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, killing 10 people, it marked the 7th mass shooting in America in the last 7 days. Maybe life is getting back to normal in the U.S.? March 23rd was also the 18-year anniversary of Michael Moore winning the Academy Award for "Bowling For Columbine," a film exploring America's love affair with guns, its history of racism and its culture of fear. He took the stage and denounced the Bush administration's illegal and immoral war in Iraq which had been launched days earlier. One of the most memorable voices in "Bowling For Columbine" was Tom Mauser, father of 15 year-old Daniel Mauser, one of the 12 students killed at Columbine High School on April 20th, 1999. Mauser raised an idea that became the key question in the film: while other countries have violent histories, violent video games, violent movies, and profane music, and while some also have plenty of guns, why is it only in America that we shoot and kill each other so much? Twenty years later, Tom Mauser joins Michael on Rumble to discuss the same exact question. Weeks after rebellions have sprung up across America in the wake of the police killing George Floyd, small ripples of change keep occurring, including in popular culture. The show "Cops," which has perpetuated racist stereotypes of Black Americans for three decades, was finally cancelled, and Nascar just announced they were forbidding the Confederate flag from being displayed at their events. Michael Moore shares his thoughts on what these actions mean, and what everyone (especially white people) must do to end white supremacy rather than settle for small symbolic changes. ********** Rumble with Michael Moore listeners - protect your online privacy with Express VPN! Having begun the round table on "Bowling for Columbine" (2002) in Cannes by asking the journalists about their nationalities, Michael Moore immediately turned the tables and wanted to know why so few murders occur in Switzerland, where almost every man has an assault rifle at home. One may argue about Moore's methods (his ambush interview with the aged Charlton Heston in this film, for example, raised a lot of hackles), but when it comes to combining political propaganda with entertainment, there are few filmmakers who can hold a candle to him. And in Bowling for Columbine, the balance between wit and veracity was more even-handed than it was in later films.
"Did We Doc Up?" month continues with an appearance by THE PRODUCER (Carrie N.) as we discuss two early 2000s activist docs from back when everyone liked Michael Moore. How did they age? How much did our complicated feelings on Moore contribute to those reactions? Does the film still have value today? All that and MOORE in our Moorefest episode. Tune in next week for our final episode in the month, INCONVENIENT TRUTH with the Dustin Koski and Adam Koski.
Enano and Mouth discuss one of the greatest documentaries of all time - Bowling for Columbine. This one quickly goes into a wider political discussion, but listen along for a discussion on how to discuss opposing viewpoints and our views on the best way for indie filmmakers to contribute to film via a documentary.
Michael Moore and Naomi Klein have an in-depth conversation about climate barbarism, Say Yes To The Dress, sadism, the unlocked Canadian door scene in Bowling For Columbine and the re-awakening of revolutionary movements in the U.S. and around the world. ********** Follow Naomi Klein here: https://twitter.com/NaomiAKlein Get a copy of "On Fire: The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal" here: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/On-Fire/Naomi-Klein/9781982129910 ********** Subscribe to “RUMBLE with Michael Moore” on: Apple https://apple.co/rumble Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/5KubucWBfyJr14bD7xWBvS Google: https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8xMGZjOWEzMC9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw== Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/michael-moore-4/rumble-with-michael-moore Anchor: https://anchor.fm/rumble-with-michael-moore Follow Michael on: Twitter: https://twitter.com/MMFlint Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mmflint/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/michaelfmoore/ ******************** --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rumble-with-michael-moore/message

The hosts welcome special guest William Romano-Pugh - actor, socialite, and international film Epicurean, who helps them curate a list of the most influential films ever made and eventually decide on the one that is the utmost, but it's not a unanimous decision! In fact, there is controversy amongst the judges, and some aren't particularly happy about the decision. Other Topics Include: Lucasfilm, Skywalker Ranch, Bowling For Columbine, Wizard of Oz, It's A Wonderful Life, The Matrix, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, The Shawshank Redemption, Avatar, Schindler's List, Citizen Kane, Parasite, The Death Of Dick Long, Bride of Frankenstein, In The Realm Of The Senses, Medium Cool, A Face In The Crowd, Psycho, The Exorcist, Star Wars, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Black Panther, Brokeback Mountain, Norma Rae, Colin Kaepernick, Marie Yovanovitch, and unfortunately Donald Trump and his Impeachment Gala, but NOTHING about the other one of his supporters that was indicted this week. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the most downloaded podcast in the world! The Unimaginary Friendcast! All that and more right here on a brand new episode of the "Beats and Speaks Podcast!" *Disclaimer* There was an issue with my audio the night that Tracy and I recorded this interview, where my audio kept feeding back to me. On this episode of Movie Left we're reviewing the 2002 Oscar winning documentary Bowling For Columbine. We talk about our favorite and least favorite moments from the film, argue about Michael Moore's filmmaking style, and discuss what a dried up old turd Charlton Heston is.

Inspired by new release MISS SLOANE we attempt to control gun control cinema as seen in the Michael Moore documentary BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE and the John Grisham film adaptation of RUNAWAY JURY. To take on such heavy hitters as Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman we need Dwight Hurst of The Broken Brain podcast, and a huge fan of The West Wing in Ben Zuk to walk and talk with Jessica Chastain. ALSO: We propose MySpace as a place for former jury fixers to find their next gig.

On April 20, 1999 students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 of their fellow students (as well as a teacher) at Columbine High School in Colorado before committing suicide. The incident traumatized an entire nation, and in the wake there was a flurry of media attention, often looking to point the finger at a cause – or series of causes – for what ended up being referred to (in typical media fashion) as the “Columbine Incident”. There was plenty of blame to go around, but it was the popular culture that the two teens loved – dark, industrial music, violent video games, horror movies – that got the most attention from the various news sources and politicians. It made such an impact that several films were devoted entirely to the incident including: Gus Van Sant’s ELEPHANT and Michael Moore’s documentary BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE. ELEPHANT was filmed in 2002 and while it was critically lauded, it was also criticized for being released so soon after the incident. But it wasn’t the first dramatization of the event. In fact, only months after the Columbine High Massacre filmmakers William Hellfire and Joey Smack – both already deeply involved with low-budget horror and exploitation filmmaking – decided to make a gonzo dramatization of the incident. DUCK! THE CARBINE HIGH MASSACRE was originally released on October 26th, 1999, just six months after Columbine occurred, and you can imagine that the response was less than favorable.
