Somewhere between serving as a news anchor in Eau Claire and a radio host in Chippewa Falls, Pat spent a brief stint as a TV reporter in the Cayman Islands. Wednesday was Election Day in his favorite piece of paradise, giving him a chance to reminisce about covering politics in a British Overseas Territory—and being denounced by members of Parliament as one of those nasty immigrants coming to “take our jobs.” Sound familiar?! pWotD Episode 2876: Saint Patrick's Day Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 556,467 views on Monday, 17 March 2025 our article of the day is Saint Patrick's Day.Saint Patrick's Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, lit. 'the Day of the Festival of Patrick'), is a religious and cultural holiday held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (c. 385 – c. 461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland.Saint Patrick's Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland), the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Lutheran Church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and, by extension, celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, céilithe, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Christians who belong to liturgical denominations also attend church services. Historically, the Lenten restrictions on fasting and drinking alcohol were lifted for the day, which has encouraged the holiday's tradition of revelry.Saint Patrick's Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador (for provincial government employees), and the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated in places with a large Irish diaspora community, such as Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival. Modern celebrations have been greatly influenced by those of the Irish diaspora, particularly those that developed in North America. However, there has been criticism of Saint Patrick's Day celebrations for having become too commercialised and for fostering negative stereotypes of the Irish people. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 11:18 UTC on Tuesday, 18 March 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Saint Patrick's Day on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kajal.
Eddie Hearn talks to British sprint record holder at 100m and 200m, Zharnel Hughes. In 2023 he became the first British man to win a world 100m medal in 20 years when he claimed a bronze at the World Championships in Budapest. He's also a double Commonwealth Games gold medallist and European champion as part of the 4 x 100m relay team. He was on the Great Britain team that won silver in the 4 × 100m relay at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (in 2021) though the team was stripped of their second place after the Court of Arbitration for Sport found CJ Ujah guilty of a doping violation.Born and raised Anguilla, which is a British Overseas Territory, Zharnel lives in Jamaica and trains with Glen Mills – Usain Bolt's coach. He tells Eddie about some of the posturing antics that go on ahead of a race, how he holds on to his innate sense of calm, and his passion for flying planes.
In this episode I am speaking with three young people from the Cayman Islands about the existential climate threat they face. They are taking their case to the British Government to ask for assistance in what could eventually lead to an evacuation plan. The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory lying to the south of Cuba and the North East of Honduras. Currently an estimated 85% of the worlds hedge funds are located in these islands. The irony is that a significant percentage of the funds flowing through the Cayman isles will be invested in or derived from fossil fuels - the very cause of the regional climate destabilisation that is getting much worse. Aleigha, Rickeem and Connor from Sustainable Cayman all have a case to make to the British people that could end up being part of the transformational change we need immediately. The London meeting at the House of Commons with MPs is in collaboration with OnePlanet in the UK and is the start of a dialogue that aims to encourage the UK to act responsible in the face of existential threats to these islands. The way of life in the Falklands, a remote British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic, has changed massively over the past two hundred years. From an isolated archipelago full of sheep farmers on the brink of destitution, the islands are now a prosperous and diverse quasi-nation, with many, if not most, of the comforts of modern life. This episode of the Falklands Way of Life looks at the Falklands in the modern day, and how what's on the horizon for the islands in the future. The latest observations from Nasa's InSight Mars Lander and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) have revealed new information on Mars' interior structure. Dr Anna Horleston, Senior Research Associate in Planetary Seismology at the University of Bristol, talks us through the mars-quakes that provided this data. On the 30th of October, Brazilians will head to the polls to elect their next president. Jeff Tollefson, Senior Reporter at Nature, tells Roland what approach the two candidates – Jair Bolsonaro and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva – might take towards science and the potential local and global impacts this could have. Humans aren't the only animals to pick their noses… it turns out primates engage in this habit too. Anne-Claire Fabre, Curator of Mammals at the Duke Lemur Center, tells reporter Vic Gill about the long-fingered aye-ayes having a dig around their noses, and how more research is needed to unpick the reasons behind this behaviour. And producer Robbie Wojciechowski heads to the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton to capture the launch of the RRS Discovery mission to Ascension Island and St Helena. Science In Action will be following the mission over the next 6 weeks as it uncovers new specimens from the deep ocean, as well as surveying the overall health and wellbeing of the ocean around the British Overseas Territory. Record-breaking heatwaves swept across the Earth's northern hemisphere this summer, with continental Europe, China, the UK and parts of the US all experiencing exceptional temperatures. Listener Geoff in Australia wants to know: Is climate change really responsible or could it just be weather? Marnie Chesterton goes to Kenya, where certain areas of Amboseli have experienced intense drought over the past 5 years. There she meets members of the Masai community who have been farmers for generations. They describe how seasonal rains have successively failed to appear when expected, and explain how this has affected their lives. Marnie asks local people, meteorologists and climate scientists for their take on the year's hottest debate. (Image: Impression of a rover on the surface of Mars. Credit: Getty Images)

In this episode, Lisa Cherry is in conversation with Alex Kemp exploring professional kindness, culture and leadership. Alexander Kemp has been working with children and families for over 20 years. He holds a degree in social work and a masters of public administration. He lives in Brighton with his husband who is a doctor working in intensive care. Alex is care experienced. Alex has worked in senior roles within large organisations specialising in the provision of services to children and families who need help and protection and with children in care and care leavers. Alex worked at Cafcass, the largest employer of social workers in the UK, as an assistant director for a large geographical area of England. In this role, he worked in partnership with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in supporting the British Overseas Territories to develop and improve services for children and families. He trained and coached senior leaders abroad to support their development. Alex's last role was in the UK as one of Her Majesty's Inspectors of children's social care; he is the first known care experienced person to have held this position. He inspected local authorities and other organisations including fostering agencies and children's homes. Alex is one of only a handful of care experienced people in the UK who have progressed into such senior roles in large organisations responsible for providing help and support to children and families. He believes strongly that expertise by experience is undervalued. He has recently established an organisation which aims to support organisations and practitioners across the helping professions explore how and kindness and reflection influence the way in which professionals work. Alex also hopes to spend some time speaking, training and writing. Twitter - Alex - @AlexanderKempyLisa - @_lisacherry

What is the UK's Nationality and Borders Act? How does it relate to previous acts concerned with nationality and immigration legislation? What is the back story to some of the central changes that this act introduces? We cover all of this and more in this bumper episode to mark the start of Series 2 of Who do we think we are? Presenter Michaela Benson introduces the Nationality and Borders Act and how this sits in a longer history of Acts which considers changes to nationality and immigration legislation alongside one another. She also joins podcast researcher George Kalivis in the archive, where they discuss the behind closed doors responses of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher about what Britain should do in respect to the resettlement of refugees from Vietnam in the 1970s and 80s. We're joined by Trent Lamont Miller and Dave Varney of the British Overseas Territories Citizenship campaign to discuss the impetus behind this campaign and the journey to get legislation changed to allow the children of British Overseas Territories citizens born outside of marriage abroad to be entitled for this citizenship status. But as our conversation with Fizza Qureshi (CEO of Migrants Rights Network) reveals, the success of this campaign for BOTCs is bittersweet in the context of the predominantly bleak consequences of this act. The premier of the British Virgin Islands and the director of the Caribbean territory's ports were arrested Thursday on drug smuggling charges in South Florida, federal authorities said.Premier Andrew Alturo Fahie and Managing Director Oleanvine Maynard were taken into custody by U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents at Miami-Opa-locka Executive Airport and charged with conspiracy to import cocaine and conspiracy to launder money, according to a criminal complaint. Maynard's son, Kadeem Maynard, faces the same changes in the alleged scheme, according to the records."Anyone involved with bringing dangerous drugs into the United States will be held accountable, no matter their position," DEA Administrator Anne Milgram said in a statement. "Today is yet another example of DEA's resolve to hold corrupt members of government responsible for using their positions of power to provide a safe haven for drug traffickers and money launderers in exchange for their own financial and political gain.”Fahie and Oleanvine Maynard had been at the airport to meet Mexican drug traffickers, who in reality were undercover DEA agents, to see a shipment of $700,000 in cash that BVI officials expected to receive for helping smuggle cocaine from Colombia to Miami and New York, the complaint said.A DEA confidential source had previously met with Maynard and her son after being introduced by a group of self-proclaimed Lebanese Hezbollah operatives, according to the complaint. After Fahie became involved, it said, the BVI officials agreed to to let the smugglers bring the cocaine through the port at Tortola before continuing on to the U.S.Governor Of The British Virgin Islands John Rankin released a statement clarifying that Thursday's arrests in Florida were not connected to a Commission of Inquiry issued last year in the territory. That investigation was meant to focus on governance and corruption, not a criminal investigation into the illegal drug trade, Rankin said in a statement posted online. It isn't known whether the commission had found any suspected wrongdoing by Fahie or Maynard, but Rankin said he expects to have the results published urgently to avoid unnecessary speculation. The British Virgin Islands, with a population about 35,000 people, is a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean Sea, located east of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The governor is appointed by the queen, the territory's ultimate executive authority, and acts on her behalf. What rights to citizenship do those from Britain's 14 remaining overseas territories? What about those who through no fault of their own found themselves displaced and exiled from the territories through which they could claim this right? In Episode 10, we look indepth at the case of the Chagos Islanders and the consequences of their forced displacement from the British Indian Ocean Territories for their access to British citizenship. Michaela Benson explains the emergence of the British Overseas Territories Act 2002 and how this departed from previous transformations to the citizenship provisions for those in Britain's overseas territories and who this excluded. George Kalivis heads into the archive to revisit how the BOTA 2002 was announced in the UK and the responses to this from the governments of these overseas territories. And we hear from Rosy Leveque and David Jerome Simon of British Indian Ocean Territories Citizens about the forced displacement of their ancestors and how this has led to unequal access to British citizenship, and their hopes for amendments to the Nationality and Borders Bill. Gibraltar has built a reputation as a congenial domicile for insurance companies. With a robust regulatory regime but an accessible regulator prepared to work fast, Gibraltar is now home to a third of motor insurance premiums in the United Kingdom, including those paid to household names such as Admiral. With nine tenths of its business emanating from London, Gibraltar has suffered little from the loss of free access to European Union (EU) markets that followed Brexit. In fact, Gibraltar may even benefit if plans to join the Schengen Area are realised. With a blockchain law in place, and a statement of intent agreed with InsurTech UK, Gibraltar is also catching the attention of the new breed of technology-driven insurers planning to disrupt an industry that traditionally avoids being in the vanguard of technological revolutions. Dominic Hobson, co-founder of Future of Finance, spoke to Mike Ashton, senior finance executive, insurance and pensions, at Gibraltar Finance, the government body that promotes Gibraltar as a financial services centre, about the opportunities InsurTechs will find in the British Overseas Territory. This deaf-blind Paralympian was told to navigate Tokyo alone. So she quit Team USA. TIMONIUM, Md. — Five years ago, Becca Meyers was on the floor of her room in the Olympic Village at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympics, balled up and sobbing, frustrated and terrified. She had stopped eating because she couldn't find the athletes' dining area. Even after her parents rescued her and pumped her full of calories and confidence in time for her to win three gold medals and a silver for Team USA, she made a promise to herself: She would never put herself through such a nightmare again. On Sunday evening, roughly five weeks before the start of the Tokyo Paralympics, Meyers, a deaf-blind swimmer with a chance to medal in four events, pulled the plug on her Olympic dream — most likely forever. With a click, she sent an email informing U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee officials of her decision to withdraw from Team USA. Gwen Jorgensen is Leaving Bowerman Track Club After four years at the Nike-sponsored club coached by Jerry Schumacher, Gwen Jorgensen announced today that she's leaving Bowerman Track Club to be coached by Bobby McGee, who she has worked with in the past. In a video uploaded to her YouTube channel, Jorgensen explained that a mix of career and family goals led to this decision. “I've had two marathons that just haven't proven I can do it,” she said. “I want to just have a marathon, that's like, OK, I can run this.” She and her husband, Patrick Lemieux, are also looking for a new place to live and are considering having more children. Jorgensen won the Olympic gold at the Rio Games in 2016 in triathlon, and announced a year later she would shift to running, with a focus on medaling in the marathon. Due to extended recovery after heel surgery to repair Haglund's deformity in May 2019, she didn't end up competing in the Olympic marathon trials last year—in early 2020, she decided to focus on the track. “My goals in the marathon aren't changing. My timeline is,” she said at the time. What's New in the 303: REMEMBERING MIKE GREER – A PIONEER, INNOVATOR AND FRIEND An athlete, race director, official, volunteer, author and speaker. A coach and a mentor. An inspiration and an innovator. A pioneer of the sport and a titan of the community. Mike Greer, who dedicated his life to triathlon and the multisport community, passed away at 82 on July 21. His service to the sport spanned nearly four decades and encompassed every facet of the industry. The Funeral service is planned for Monday, July 26 at 1 p.m. CT in Lubbock, Texas at the Sanders Funeral Home. Mike competed in over 400 triathlons across every distance and continued to excel as an age-group athlete into his 80s, created and served as the race director of Buffalo Springs Lake 70.3 at Lubbock, Texas, for the past 30-plus years, held the position of both Interim Executive Director and President of the Board of Directors of USA Triathlon, and created the swim-bike discipline of aquabike, among other accomplishments and contributions. Mike was one of the forerunners of the sport who guided triathlon through its formative years to bring it stability, authenticity and solvency, and laid the foundation for the current success of both the sport and the National Governing Body. “All of us stand on the shoulders of Mike – what he did for our sport and USA Triathlon cannot be overstated,” said Rocky Harris, USA Triathlon CEO. “He taught all of us so much about both triathlon and life, and his legacy will have a lasting impact in every corner of our industry and community.” Ride/Race Mt. Endurance News: Just Days Before Olympics, Tokyo's Outdoor Swimming Venue Stinks In less than two weeks, Olympic swimmers will dive into Tokyo Bay to compete in the triathlon. For residents who live near the shore, that's an unappealing thought because, despite months of efforts to clean up the water, the bay stinks. Known for its shoreline of gleaming skyscrapers and iconic Rainbow Bridge, the “futuristic landscape” was selected “at the strong request of international sporting organizations,” according to the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee. But in the run-up to the games, problems began to emerge. In August 2019 a test for the swimming part of the Paratriathlon was canceled after E. coli bacteria was found in the water at more than twice the limit set by the International Triathlon Union, now called World Triathlon. As one athlete put it, the venue “smelled like a toilet,” the Asahi newspaper reported. Since then, the host city has taken drastic steps to try to repair its tarnished image. It dumped 22,200 cubic meters of sand into the bay to create an environment for organisms that help clean the water. And it's designed three-layer polyester screens to protect the Olympic swimming venues from E. coli. On top of that the city was already building huge storage tanks to capture flood runoff, so that it can be treated before reaching the sea. https://www.letour.fr/en/rankings Olympic Triathlon Live Streams & Schedule | NBC Olympics Olympic Cycling Live Streams & Schedule | NBC Olympics England vs. Italy result: Italians beat English in Euro 2021 final in penalty kick shootout "It's coming to Rome" is what Italian players were shouting in celebration after winning the Euro 2021 final in a dramatic penalty kick shootout against England that saw goalkpeeper Gigi Donnarumma emerge as the hero. The shootout, only the second in Euros finals history, was necessary after 120 minutes of action ended in a 1-1 draw. Donnarumma stopped a shot by England's Jadon Sancho and then clinched the win with a save on 19-year-old Bukayo Saka, who took England's fifth and final penalty. Marcus Rashford, who along with Sancho came into the match specifically for the shootout, hit the post on his attempt.
