Gary joined the Royal Regiment of Artillery (RA) in the British Army twice, once in 1999 and again in 2004. He served for 12 years in total, reaching the rank of Bombardier (Bdr). In this episode Gary talks about his journey in joining the British Army, and why he left and then rejoined a few years later. He shares his time completing many courses, which prepared him for operational tours of Iraq and 2 deployments to Afghanistan. These tours saw him be part of a Close Protection Team, a Tactical Air Control Party (TACP), and be a Forward Observer.During Gary's 2nd operational tour to Afghanistan, he was part of a mission, which sadly lost a life of a team member. During this event, Gary consciously risked his life, on three separate occasions, and it was a miracle he himself was not killed. For his actions on this day, he was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross (CGC), second only to the Victoria Cross (VC). After this tour, he suffered a shoulder and leg injury, which meant his career was cut short. However, he set new goals with recurve archery (a sport he's excelled in from a young age), and took on the challenge of being part of the inaugural Invictus Games in London 2014, where he won Team Gold and Individual Silver.Watch Episode on YouTubePart 1 & Part 2TikTok:tiktok.com/@militaryveteranspodcastInstagram:instagram.com/militaryveteranspodcastX:twitter.com/MilVetPodcastLinkedIn:linkedin.com/company/military-veterans-podcastMerchandise:milvetpodcast.com/merchSend us a textMessage at the beginning of the recording is from your host Gav, giving you information on how you can support the show through Patreon.Supporting monthly would help the show record future episodes and help with the upkeep of the show. £5 a month will give you access to bonus recordings, where Gav and the guest chat about things that don't make it into the main recording. The British Army can trace its origins back to the Acts of Union of 1707 and its rich history involves conflicts both large and small in all corners of the globe. But as the twenty-first century dawned, the organisation found itself in a transitional phase and with something of an identity crisis. What exactly was its culture? What, with its resources, could it really be expected to achieve? What was its relevance to modern Britain? Today's guest, Simon Akam, sought to confront questions like these in his book Changing the Guard: The British Army Since 9/11. Grounded in his own first-hand experience and supported by hundreds of interviews, in this episode Akam explains the conclusions that he reached and the incredible resistance he experienced as he sought to bring his book to publication. Simon Akam is a journalist and author. Born in Cambridge, he held a Gap Year Commission in the British Army before studying at the University of Oxford and Columbia Journalism School. He has worked for the New York Times, Reuters and Newsweek. Changing the Guard, published in 2021, is his first book. Show notes Scene One: A tent in Camp Bastion, Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Colour Sergeant Brian Wood MC is a former soldier in the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment. Woody now has set himself a new mission, to help drive and motivate others, to encourage us all to step outside our comfort zone by running a bit further or faster and by pushing ourselves a little more than we're used to. Part One: “The Kids In The Hall”: Our interview with guests, Jacob Stauttener and Evan Switzer, borrows its title from the 1990s Canadian comedy show, "The Kids in the Hall".   Two (youngish) grandads, call us The Airfix Generation, put two (youngish) gamers, call them The GW Generation, on the spor to talk about generational differences and crossovers. We talk about crossovers from the kind of turnkey gaming systems that young gamers find in a Games Workshop store to more "obscure" (shhhh, don't use that word around James!) games.  We talk about the appeal of creative and collaborative projects such as Evan's role in The Ninth Age, a player-driven continuation of the old Warhammer Fantasy system.  We also wonder if old gamers, like old church people, can stop clutching their pearls about "Where are the young people" and trust that the next generation will find its way into the hobby and make it their own.  And that's a good thing, we conclude. In this week's episode of Paris History Avec a Hemingway, we continue on with another lady of Marie Antoinette. Gabrielle de Polignac was a constant source of gossip from Versaille to Paris. The fun-loving Polignac was born September 8, 1749, in Paris into the French noble family of the Nouilles. Married in 1767 to Jules de Polignac, captain of the Royal Regiment and a member of the court at Versailles. Through her sister-in-law who was the lady of honor to Madame Elisabeth, she was invited frequently to court. Gabrielle was very beautiful and was easily noticed and even caught the eye of Marie Antoinette. The queen walked up to her and asked who she was and why she hadn't seen her before to which Polignac replied, “we don't have the money to live the court life”. Marie liked her honesty and invited her back the next day. Polignac was free-spirited and loved the trappings of life at Versailles at a time when the queen was tired of the formality. Gabrielle encouraged her to spend more time at the Petit Trianon enjoying the casual lazy days. A welcome change from the etiquette and watchful eyes but that came with a lot of problems. Rumors began to spread about Polignac and the queen. Marie Antoinette was already hated by the people and Polignac became public enemy number one. They thought her influence over the queen and her excess was a direct drain on the treasury of France. There was also the rumor that they were lovers which just rallied them all up even more. When the Bastille was attacked, Polignac and her husband were told to leave Versailles. Fleeing with just the clothes on their back and enough bread and wine in their coach they arrived in Switzerland in three days. She stayed in touch with the queen once she was arrested and held in the Temple prison. On January 21, 1793, the king was killed and when the news finally reached her she could barely handle it. Falling ill to tuberculosis, her son tried to keep the news of the queen's death a secret. They were able to shield her until the end of November, a week later on December 5, 1793, the queen of the parties, Gabrielle Polignac died in Switzerland. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/join/Laviecreative)

"The odds were stacked against us, but they were just odds..." Brian Wood MC, former Colour Sergeant, Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment. Brian Wood was awarded the Military Cross, one of Britain’s highest awards for gallantry in combat, by Her Majesty The Queen II, following his courageous leadership under enemy fire in Iraq. In the heat of a lethal close quarters battle, fighting outnumbered, he seized the initiative, taking a split-second decision to lead his men into the teeth of enemy fire in the first bayonet charge by British soldiers in 25 years. Leading from the front, he put his own life in great danger. Under his command, Brian’s men defeated the enemy without sustaining any serious casualties themselves. Their actions that day saved many other soldiers’ lives. During a 16 year military career, Brian led British troops across the full spectrum of battle from training to fighting; from operations in the Balkans to high intensity combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Throughout his Army career he had to make life-or-death decisions, frequently in hazardous battle situations, usually under great pressure and often against the clock. There is no greater leadership challenge than motivating men to put their lives on the line. To succeed they have to know that you are a meticulous and competent planner and commander who can be trusted with their lives. Brian’s military experience has equipped him to deliver highly inspirational and compelling sessions, sharing his experiences from the battlefield and suggesting ways that the lessons he has learnt can be applied in the corporate world. Private Lee O'Callaghan He was aged 20, and came from London. Unmarried, he was serving with the 1st Battalion The Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment based at Tidworth.Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Maer, the Commanding Officer of 1PWRR, said:Pte Lee O'Callaghan joined my Battalion in December 2003, and was quickly assimilated into the regimental family. He was highly regarded and known as a hard working, diligent member of the team who could be trusted to finish any task with characteristic good humour. He was an avid football fan and keen supporter of Millwall. As a midfielder player himself he took every opportunity he could to play football, bringing his love for the game from Tidworth to Iraq.Lee came from Bermondsey, London. He joined the army for the excitement and challenge it offered, he excelled in the training and preparations for Iraq and looked forward to deploying on operations and to do the job for which he had trained. Pte O'Callaghan showed the highest standards of professionalism and courage, in a highly volatile situation. The loss of Pte O'Callaghan is deeply felt by all those in the Battalion, but especially so by his friends in B Company. Our heartfelt thoughts go out to his family and loved ones from all those in his Army family. The Above was fromhttps://www.gov.uk/government/fatalities/private-lee-ocallaghan LEE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN' – FAMILY'S PRIDE AS WALWORTH STREET NAMED AFTER IRAQ WAR HERONEWS DESK (28 September, 2017)Young Millwall fan was fatally shot by Shia militiamen in Basra in 2004Shirley and Danny O'Callaghan (left); Lee O'Callaghan (right)A new street in Walworth has been named after Iraq War hero Private Lee O'Callaghan, who was killed in combat in 2004.Brave Lee was fatally shot in the chest on August 9 during clashes with Shia militiamen in the city of Basra. The 20-year-old had been on duty for five months, with one week left before he was due to fly home on leave and be reunited with his family.Last Friday, the O'Callaghan Way street sign was unveiled in the nearly-completed section of Elephant Park, and will link Heygate Street with Wansey Street. It is also located around the corner from where younger brother Danny, and proud mum Shirley O'Callaghan, both work at F A Albin & Sons funeral directors.“He was a funny brother. I looked up to him and he was my inspiration,” said Danny, 29. “Now it's going to be there forever. He's really left his mark on the area.“That spot is exactly where our first home was. A lot of our family lived on the Heygate. My dad [Eugene] came here from Ireland and we had aunties and cousins in the blocks.”Shirley, 58, from Tatum Street, said: “People always come up with these ideas, but you never think they're going to be put into practice. It went through so many stages, but now we can actually see it.”“Lee will never be forgotten. All of his friends who were in the army with Lee come and meet us at the cemetery and come for dinner with us. The army is like a family. They always get in touch without fail.”_The last time one of Lee's family heard his voice was when the young soldier called home a few days earlier to speak to dad Eugene, on his birthday. The whole family, including sisters Gemma and Kerry, had been looking forward to him coming home on leave the following week. Instead, they got a visit from two army officers saying Lee had given his life helping his comrades to safety, after two Land Rovers were destroyed by rockets.Danny and Shirley gave thanks to fellow Millwall fans, Lee Evans and John Davies, who led the campaign with the News to cement Lee's name in the area where he was born and bred.Lee's name was put forward with more than 130 suggestions to name new streets and blocks in the borough over the next fifteen years. The family said a full unveiling and celebration will take place when construction has finished at the other end of O'Callaghan Way.the Above Text was Taken from https://www.southwarknews.co.uk/news/lee-will-never-forgotten-familys-pride-walworth-street-named-iraq-war-hero/A bench is set to be unveiled at The Den on Saturday in memory of Millwall fan Private Lee O'Callaghan, who sadly lost his life in Basrah, Iraq, in August 2004.The idea of fellow fan Lee Evans - who was also the brainchild behind a street named O'Callaghan Way, on the Heygate Estate in Walworth three years ago - Lee's Dad used to run the Alscott Arms pub in Bermondsey. As a child, Lee was taken to a few away games, which is where his love of The Lions began.A group of friends decided to try and raise money for the bench via supporter forum House of Fun, and also ran a collection in the Executive Boxes here at The Den.One of the group, John Davies, said: "I went into Huski Chocolate's box and Rodrigo, Linus and Mikael [from The Lions' principal partners] pulled me to one side and told me how much they respect the armed services and the sort of work they do - and then said they wanted to pay for the whole bench. True to their word, they paid the whole lot."The bench was made in Belfast and paid for by Huski, with the House of Fun collection - of just under £2,000 - going to other causes, such as Charlie Wynn, the Millwall supporting boxer who suffered life changing injuries, The Evelina Children's Hospital and Demelza Hospice.Ryan Leonard's home kit has been sponsored in memory of Lee for two seasons now, and the VIP Experience - one of the benefits of kit sponsorship - are being given to Lee's family this weekend. The bench will be located by the front of the Barry Kitchener Stand, with the unveiling - by Lions CEO Steve Kavanagh, Ben Thompson and members of the O'Callaghan family - taking place at midday. This Text was taken from https://www.millwallfc.co.uk/news/2019/november2/private-lee-ocallaghan/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/that-millwall-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Alistair Kett is one of PwC’s top Industrial Products Consulting Partners based in London. His 7 years of military experience as a British Infantry Army Officer, plus his 22 years commercial experience make a powerful combination. His PwC specialties are operations consulting expertise covering: cost-based transformation, operating model design and transformation; procurement and supply chain optimisation; complex transformation programme leadership and deal support/project financing. Alistair has deep domain knowledge in the industrial products sector with specific expertise in manufacturing, oil field services. aerospace, defence, transportation and logistics. He was promoted in 2008 to PwC Partner at a young age had a fascinating time as a working in the Middle East in countries like Iraq and Gulf States. His earliest leadership experience was forged in the British Army as an Infantry Officer in The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (RRF). I’ve known him 20 years from our first days in PwC and find his leaders insights and practices very insightful and inspiring. He learnt from some of the finest leaders such as General Paul Nanson (Commandant RMAS) who was a fellow officer senior to him. We had wide discussions on: Millennials, moral integrity, authenticity, vulnerability and how to motivate people are shrewd. Toxic environments with misaligned goals, inauthenticity and lost trust are too common in various businesses. Beware business “White Collar psychopaths” – if a leader’s moral compass wavers, then you get: bullying, self-serving and dishonest behaviours. Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is key when blended with Moral Integrity and then you will get fine inspiring leaders.True mantra about “the loneliness of leadership” and often find yourself working in the dark. Is so then “ensure your moral compass has a backlight”. Alistair was frequently promoted in the Army and PwC at an early age and his advice was to balance 3 elements: The Beast, Theatre and Real-World components. Focus on real world value-adding activities.Top Tip – remember you have choice how to interact with people, what decisions to make and be prepared to try something new.#InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #InclusiveLeadership #Boards See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Major General Paul Nanson CBE is a British Army officer who serves as Commandant of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) and General Officer Commanding (GOC) Recruiting and Initial Training Command.Paul was commissioned into the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (RRF) in January 1986. He became Commanding Officer (CO) of the 1st Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in 2006 and was deployed to Iraq. He went on to be Chief of Staff for 1st (UK) Armoured Division in Germany in 2008, Commander of the 7th Armoured Brigade in March 2011 and Director (Army) at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in April 2014. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for distinguished services in Afghanistan in 2015.Paul is a talented and deep thinking officer who I met on his Coaching Programme at Henley Business school.Paul has made the art and practice of leadership his profession and calling. When I asked Paul what "Leadership" means he focussed on the Fundamentals.3 things he believes strongly make good leaders: 1. Develop and forge strong teams to work together 2. Problem Solving - learn how to tackle complex decisions and empower those you lead3.Serve to Lead - lead by example and put your people before yourself.Leaders take “Extreme Ownership” of what happens. Too often in society and Politics people in leadership positions rarely take accountability for the impact of their decisions or poor behaviour.Paul Spoke of the crucial military philosophy of "Mission Command". Also to understand the key issues for your leader and that he can clearly encapsulate: "Commander’s Intent". Disciplined initiative is required by leaders to exploit fleeting opportunities.Put Stress the importance of delegation and empowerment so that decision-making is given to the leader at the point where the information is. Too often in business it is given to the person with the most senior role - who doesn't necessarily know what is going on.It is the responsibility of Leader to retain ultimate accountability - even if you give authority to others to act. He spoke of Good leaders vs Selfish individuals.Special qualities of British Army Officers - these are even more highly relevant to Business Employers today than ever before.Especially Reserve officers. These qualities are: Leadership development, decision making, problem solving, generating high performance teams & leading teams. We both Discussed the Executive Coaching skills of Army officers. I know that Paul is a experienced and high calibre executive coach himself and feels that these skills are crucial for army officers to develop and employ with all those the lead and influenceArmy leadership is very different from the traditional stereotypes people criticise. Less tell - more encouraging of greater self-awareness, to recognise blind spots, seek 360 Feedback, have coaches. In a recent survey of soldiers - they want more coaching & mentoring from their NCOs and Officers.. Tips – remember the basics - be yourself, never stop learning - it's a lifetime journey#InspiringLeadership #leadership #courage #CEOs #MotivalionalSpeaker #teamcoach #resilience #Boards See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
