Labour conference kicks off this weekend in Liverpool – but the mood going in is far from triumphant. On today's Coffee House Shots, Lucy Dunn is joined by Tim Shipman and More in Common's Luke Tryl to take the temperature ahead of Labour's big set-piece. They discuss why some voters already see Starmer as ‘just as bad as the lot that came before', and whether Labour can turn things around with new policies aimed at revitalising local communities – from saving libraries and pubs to giving residents more power over development. There is also a fascinating hypothetical poll in which an Andy Burnham-led Labour party outpaces Reform UK, turning a deficit into a narrow lead. Luke explains how Burnham's appeal lies less in his own charisma than in Labour's ability to win back disillusioned supporters from the Lib Dems and the undecided. But if Labour is struggling to meet expectations, Reform faces its own dilemmas. Farage's recent flirtation with fringe debates – from vaccine-sceptic speakers to entertaining Trump's edict on paracetamol – risks alienating the mainstream voters. As Tim and Luke point out, Reform's future depends on whether it can stay focused on bread-and-butter issues like immigration and the cost of living, or whether it strays into conspiratorial territory.Produced by Oscar Edmondson.Become a Spectator subscriber today to access this podcast without adverts. Did Arteta's cautious lineup against Man City cost Arsenal a vital win in the title race? With Liverpool now 5 points clear, is the Premier League slipping away? For the first time in over 600 games, Pep Guardiola went full-on park-the-bus against Arsenal. He subbed Nathan Ake on for Foden, Haaland off for Nico Gonzalez and switched to a back five. What does this new approach say about Man City's future under Pep?Chelsea lost again this time 2–1 at Old Trafford. That's now back-to-back defeats after also losing to Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Will Chelsea's wider strategy derail their season?Last week, Jamie Carragher said Harry Kane is England's greatest ever striker. At the same time, Erling Haaland broke another Champions League record by becoming the fastest to reach 50 goals in just 49 games. Is this a sensible fix for illegal immigration – or, as Michael puts it, ‘snake oil rubbed onto an already weak idea'? And why does Tony Blair always seem to be the ghost whispering ‘ID cards' into Westminster's ear?Next, Keir Starmer's recognition of a Palestinian state: a principled step, or a political stunt designed to placate his backbenchers? Michael and Madeline dissect the backlash, the ‘terrorist chic' of pop-concert activism, and what this move really says about Labour's priorities. Finally, they reflect on the extraordinary words of Erika Kirk, who publicly forgave her husband's alleged murderer. It was a weekend where two high profile Premier League games played out in very different ways.Musa and Ryan begin with a quick round-up, including Liverpool extending their lead at the top, thanks to their 2-1 win over Everton in the Merseyside derby (03:04). It was chaos at Old Trafford on a rain-soaked Saturday evening (07:44), but Manchester United did enough to get a much needed win against Chelsea. It took them level on points with Manchester City, where control was the name of the game in the 1-1 draw away at Arsenal (15:28), which saw Pep Guardiola record the lowest possession percentage of his managerial career. There's also a round-up of the Bundesliga (25:23), La Liga and Atleti's identity (30:28), Mourinho's return, including an accidental mini ‘what if' (36:08) and more!Don't forget to get tickets for our London live show at the Southbank Centre, which are on sale here. For more podcasts each week, ad-free and in full, plus access to the Stadio Social Club and much more, become a Stadio member by going to patreon.com/stadio. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 22, 2025 is: catch-22 • KATCH-twen-tee-TOO • noun Catch-22 typically refers to a difficult situation for which there is no easy or possible solution. In the narrowest use of the term, it refers to a problematic situation for which the only solution is denied by a circumstance inherent in the problem or by a rule. // I'm in a catch-22: to get the job I need experience, but how do I get experience if I can't get the job? See the entry > Examples: “… Liverpool is famed for its nightlife, but I'm getting the impression it could do with some help. … In December 2023, the ECHO spoke to people in Liverpool's late-night economy, and the prevailing view was it had become a struggle. … Prices don't help—drinks and tickets are more expensive than they've ever been, but venues are stuck in a Catch-22 situation, caught between having to cover huge operating costs and wanting to get people through the doors.” — Dan Haygarth, The Liverpool Echo (Liverpool, England), 23 Aug. 2025 Did you know? Catch-22 originated as the title of a 1961 novel by Joseph Heller. (Heller had originally planned to title his novel Catch-18, but the publication of Leon Uris's Mila 18 persuaded him to change the number.) The catch-22 in Catch-22 involves a mysterious Army Air Forces regulation which asserts that a man is considered mentally unsound if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions but that if he makes the necessary formal request to be relieved of such missions, the very act of making the request proves that he is sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved. Catch-22 soon entered the language as a label for any irrational, circular, and impossible situation.

Suj was already there, but will James continue to go against!? All the games reviewed, including Pep's City going low block as they tried to hold on at Arsenal, Liverpool won the Merseyside Derby, West Ham and Wolves were beaten again and though they didn't win James was far happier with what he saw from Tottenham at The Amex. There's a theme of enablers as those looking to get Haaland in may also need to find money, Cole Palmer's latest setback in a wild defeat for Chelsea at Old Trafford puts him in a 'no buy' territory, whilst the frustrations with Villa assets continues and there's repeated warnings about upcoming rotation. AFC Bournemouth's stalemate on Sunday saw the Magpies line-up very in a similar formation to when Eddie used to choose his Cherries team that would face the likes of Man City or Liverpool. With Newcastle smarting from their Champions League defeat on Thursday, Eddie needed a reaction from his side on the South Coast, but rather than play in a gung-ho style, Howe used his tactical nous to stunt everything that Bournemouth's wanted to do - giving Iraola's men no width and no space. Whilst he'd have hoped to have nicked a result for the Geordie boys, Bournemouth's defensive solidity equally gave Newcastle a tough time too, therefore the deadlock at Dean Court was hardly a surprise.
