Summer is tied to childhood memories. Italian ice. Running through the backyard sprinkler. Hanging out at the beach. Sports are tied to that, too. Kicking a ball down the street. Catching a baseball game. Cannonballs off the diving board. To ring in the summery temperatures, we're collecting stories about favorite sports memories. Whether it's an embarrassing story or a moment of glory. Here's a taste of what we've heard from listeners.
Sonny Boy Terry, born Terry Jerome in Van Wert, Ohio, is a bluesman recognized as one of Texas' - if not one of America's - top harmonica players. After learning the basics, he moved to Houston, Texas in 1981 and began building his experience with the likes of Uncle John Turner, TC and the Cannonballs, and more, and later played in bands and toured domestically and internationally with Jerry Lightfoot, Kinney Abair, and Joe Guitar Hughes. In the 1990s, he founded the 501(C)3 non-profit Houston Blues Society and started building his own band. Now the biggest selling artist on Doc Blue Records, he has been featured on countless songs and has released multiple albums of his own. Terry makes his home in Houston, Texas.

It's almost Week 1, in the weekly numbering system that's widely used in Northern Europe, where the year starts with week 1 and runs through to Week 52 or 53, depending on the calendar. It's very efficient for planning, so you don't have to say something messy like “What about that week that starts Monday June 3…” Week 1 starts on January 1, and everything follows that in perfect order. But before January 1 we have New Year's Eve, a day that fills me with trepidation to be honest, because in Denmark, New Year's Eve is all about amateur fireworks. Cannonballs, Roman Candles, Ding Dongs, Triple Extremes, these are the fireworks you can purchase and set off yourself in a local parking lot, terrifying any nearby dogs and cats. Having a family member in the hospital business, I can't help but think that today, December 26, there are a few amateur fireworks fans who have perfectly well-functioning eyes and fingers right now who won't have them on January 2. The Queen's Speech New Year's Eve celebrations start at 6pm, when the Queen Margrethe gives her annual speech, live. To the uninitiated, this looks like a woman sitting at her desk reading from a pile of papers – she refuses to use a TelePrompter – but it's all been intricately planned, from the clothes to the jewelry to the flowers to the text itself to reflect the themes and priorities of the year gone by. There's even a website that gives odds on what words and themes will appear. The Queen now keeps her pile of papers together with a paper clip. In past years, she left them loose, and on one particular occasion they got out of order and she had to desperately search through them on air to find her place. The comedian Ulf Pilgaard, a large man who dressed up as a colorful burlesque imitation of the Queen, used to make this incident part of his act, throwing papers up in the air like Harpo Marx. Just as an aside, when this comedian who imitated the Queen retired last year, the Queen herself showed up at his final performance and shook his hand. Having such a good sense of humor about herself is why Queen is so beloved, even by people who do not really like the monarchy. Some Danes even stand up to watch the Queen's speech on TV. It always ends with “Gud Bevare Danmark”, God Protect Denmark. "Wreath cake" After the speech, it's dinner time, followed by a very sweet cake called kransekage – which translates to “wreath cake.” It's made of a lot of rings delicately placed on top of each other, in a little tower. There's lot of marzipan involved in this cake. I'm not a marzipan fan myself, but if you are, you'll like this cake. Read more at howtoliveindenmark.com

When Hudson Taylor landed in China, he was greeted by danger, disappointment, and discouragement. In fact, not long after landing in Shanghai he sent his family a special Christmas present: a 5 pound cannonball - the very cannonball that almost took his life while navigating through war-torn China. As you listen to Hudson's stories about his early years in China, you discover that he's is the kind of guy who can't help but quote scripture and hymns. Cannonballs, death threats, hunger, loneliness - all produced the same result in him: recite the promises God. Hudson is the kind of friend who is always ready to remind you of God's faithfulness. In week 4 of the HeroChallenge, we want you to join with your friend Hudson in believing the promise that God will uphold you, strengthen you and help you - especially during times of adversity.Join in here: HeroChallenge

This is our third “spotlight series” episode where we're reaching out to schools who are doing intriguing progressive practices that could inspire and influence others to do the same. Each has a twist on how their school is operated, and we're bringing in students and teachers to talk about it. They're not all perfect, and they'd all acknowledge there are things they'd change; but there's so much to learn from these schools as we reimagine education in our communities.Today we're featuring One Stone, a student-led nonprofit in Boise, Idaho. One Stone has a variety of initiatives to help students use their voice to change the world. Two thirds of One Stone's board are young people, who have voted to establish multiple initiatives including Project Good: an experiential service program, Two Birds: a student-led creative studio, Solution Lab: a business incubator for young people, and now Lab 51 - who we're talking with today - an independent sliding scale tuition program high school.Lab51 features interdisciplinary, human-centered problem solving which is a collaboration between young people and mentors. Students engage in a variety of selections including “Deep Dives”, which are two-week passion-driven endeavors like photography or wilderness survival, “Immersions”, which are slightly longer and mostly take place off campus, “Cannonballs” which have students experiencing a wide variety of topics in a short period of time, and finally: service- and project-based learning.Joining us are four students: Ian, Reya, Lyla, and Ella and Jesse, who is the Director of Strategic Partnerships. We talk about the fundamentals of Lab51's program, its importance to young people, and how this model could scale and be used within traditional settings.SCHOOLOne Stone's Lab51, a student-led nonprofit High School program in Boise, Idaho, centered on students navigating their path to purpose, promoting their well-being, and self-directing their learningRESOURCESOne StoneLab51BLOB (Bold Learning Objectives)Two Birds Creative Studio (One Stone's student-driven creative studio, you can sign up to work with them!)Wayfinding Mentorship Professional Growth series for educators and mentorsHuman Centered Design for supporting student-driven learning Hosted on Acast. Everyone knows the famous horns of Strauss's Also sprach Zarathustra thanks, primarily, to its presence in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. When used, the viewer is witnessing the advancement of technology -- from bone tools to satellites seemingly floating above the big blue ball called Earth. But Kubrick's vision of the future wasn't unfounded. The ships, floating effortlessly and motionless above Earth, are simply in orbit -- a physics principle that kept the astronauts of Apollo 8 from crashing into the moon, keeps the moon from crashing into the Earth, and keeps Earth from crashing into the Sun. But how? That's what we dive into today!Topics IncludeIt's fall, y'all!Third consecutive episode mentioning Rings of PowerBone tools, the invention of beat-downs, and imagery of satellitesOrbits: just falling too fast (or not fast enough, depending on your perspective)Cannonballs and thought experimentsWill's soon-to-be famous geography tiradeShutter Shades, LMFAO, and privacy screens for your computerWant to contact us? What does it mean to fire bullets before cannonballs? Often leaders are too bold or, alternatively, too conservative. Instead of taking too much or too little risk, the concept of firing bullets before cannonballs asks leaders to validate an idea with a series of small, low-risk experiments. Once you have validated your idea, then you can concentrate your resources on a big bet idea. From Jim Collins - “The ability to turn small proven ideas (bullets) into huge hits (cannonballs) counts more than the sheer amount of pure innovation.” No one is smart enough or experienced enough to know what will or won't work. Only the market can tell us that. People intuitively say something will definitely succeed OR definitely fail. But we don't know. In this episode, Brad and Kevin talk about the fire bullets before cannonballs concept, why it matters and how you can use it in your business. ----- * Do you love The Growth Whisperers and want to see our smiling faces? You can't really improve until you start to eliminate (release). Key Part of the Strategy: Focus on Momentum You don't focus on improving everything, you focus on improving what is essential to your momentum, begin eliminating outside that. Fire Bullets, then Cannonballs. Don't just improve the quality, improve the quality around momentum and release programs that aren't momentum contributors.

Growing up in an abusive household, Isaac Sneed wasn't allowed to have friends. He learned to fend for himself. As an adult, he kept people at arm's length. For years, he struggled with substance abuse and, at times, lived on the streets. While staying in a homeless shelter, he began attending reflection circles with Ignatian Spirituality Project (ISP)—a Jesuit ministry across the U.S., Canada and Ireland. With ISP, Isaac began his journey of recovery. “They validated me and affirmed me, in a way that I had never been validated and affirmed in my own family,” Isaac says. Now, a decade later, he leads weekly reflection programs and retreats with ISP Boston. On this episode, host MegAnne Liebsch explores how Ignatian Spirituality Project offers spiritual companionship to people facing homelessness and substance addiction. She talks to alumni leaders like Isaac, as well as volunteers and ISP staff about their cannonball moments, transformative friendships, and why St. Ignatius is so relatable. _____________________________ For more information about ISP: Ignatian Spirituality Project provides spiritual retreat and reflection programs at shelters and recovery centers in cities across the US, Canada and Ireland. Hey there, my wise friends and welcome to the podcast and a very happy new year to you, I hope you're having a great start to 2022 and that your Christmas plans weren't too disrupted by the dreaded COVID. We're kicking off this year with an amazing guest, Michael Bungay Stainer, who is well renowned in the coaching world, having written his brilliant book, The Coaching Habit, which really leads into how you can bring coaching into all aspects of your life, whether you are a parent, manager or a teacher. And how it really does inspire creative thinking, and self-sufficiency. I reached out to him as he's just launching his latest book, which is called How To Begin, it feels like really perfect timing. As for many of us, the beginning of a new year is a time to reflect back on last year, and perhaps set some goals for the year ahead. Michael's take on it is to invite you to set a goal that is at the same time thrilling, important and daunting. And his book is a practical tool that will help you to outline your goal in the first place. And then really dig into why it matters, which will in turn help you to stay motivated. There's an old Buddhist saying that the best time to start anything was probably 20 years ago. And the second best time is probably today. So, if you have an idea for something that you want to launch or get off the ground, then this book is definitely one you should consider reading. As Michael says himself, progress equals happiness. And often we find meaning and happiness with small wins every day. That's how we make real progress. Sometimes it can be the smallest little thing that makes the biggest difference. So, this is a book that's really about figuring out what to focus on, and then helping you to take those small steps to find the wins that get you across the threshold towards your goal. So, with that, I'll hand you over to Michael and just say how much I am so grateful to him for joining me to share his wisdom Michael Bungay Stainer's Website Wisdom: Have the curiosity and the courage to find the answer to the burning question inside you Fire Bullets and then fire cannonballs Songs: Rubicon by Bob Dylan Deeper Water by Paul Kelly
The CBC's Brett Ruskin brings us to Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, into the moment when military personnel destroyed vintage cannon balls found in storage at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site.
T.O.M. is a Guyanese-American whose musicality was nurtured in early childhood while his father rehearsed with his bands such as The Oracles, The Jet Stars, and the Cannonballs. Legend has it some knew he was destined to be musical soon after he entered this realm from my mother's womb and got a good box from the attending nurse when he didn't immediately cry. Apparently, he let out such a wail that it moved the nurse and many in the ward to tears, and not all of laughter. T.O.M.'s musical journey, however, was almost a case of the road not taken. He received his first guitar at 5, but it was destroyed in a freak accident the very next day when his older sister and her friends used it to play Rounders, and it was until age 17, when walking by a pawn shop that a guitar in the window called to him. He bought the guitar, started teaching himself to play, and hasn't stopped playing since. He also started piano lessons as a child, but begged his parents to stop because the teacher used to lash his fingers with a wild cane or ruler if he played any wrong notes. It's amazing that he goes anywhere near a piano now. But, when the music calls, he answers.

This week it’s 9am and we're having beers for breakfast at Elicit Brewing Company (@elicitbrewing) 165 Adams St, Manchester, CT! Our guest is Elicit Brewing Company's Brew-Master Brian Ayers (@crafty_ambitions)! We talk about how he went from going to school for athletics, owning his own boxing boot camp, to home brewing and becoming the Brew-Master of Elicit! We talk about Elicit’s amazing patio, full kitchen with amazing food from Eli’s, Craft cocktail bar, Karaoke Room and Arcade. And of course we try a few flights of Elicit’s amazing craft beers. Find out about the top shelf “Cannonball” Brian shared with us. Why Brian reminds us of a combination of Bill Nye the Science Guy and Bill Goldberg? How we feel about can art. Who's mural is painted on the patio.....Marilyn Manson or Marilyn Monroe? The real science of beers. And we talk about some of Brian’s best concert experiences. The battle to topple traditional American, and Judeo-Christian, culture is raging today through a dynamic I'm calling "disproportionate engagement." I offer some examples of how this is so: an unwitting tv Christian family gets played, confessions of a former Antifa member, the unabashed educational indoctrination system, and how even cartoons are being cancelled. At the show's conclusion I also offer four steps believers should be taking. Come laugh and think with me!
This week on the Hard Hitting Sports Podcast, we start out things a little bit different. We have Ben Porter, a big face on baseball Twitter, joining the Episode. During our Interview with Ben, we discuss his time at Columbia, what he is doing for work now, and, of course, his presence on Twitter. For those who may not know, Ben was nominated for CBS Sports' top Baseball Twitter Accounts for 2020 so you're not going to want to miss this one. We wrap up Ben's Interview with some Baseball Reference Trivia. In the NBA, the top 7 teams in the East Standings (except for the Celtics) had a winning streak prior to Wednesday night. The Jazz have come back down to earth, so the discussion becomes if Jazz fans should be concerned or not. And did Russell Westbrook change the NBA forever? NFL Free Agency is off to a hot start from all of the Patriots moves, to Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston's extension's, to Aaron Jones's extension, and the Chargers beefing up their O-Line, so we cover it all. We also touch on the retirement of Drew Brees and list where we have ranked all time amongst QB's. As always, we end with some late hits! Make sure to check out Ben on Twitter at @Ben13Porter. Owned by the same family for its first 200 years then purchased by star architect Cass Gilbert in 1907 for his summer home, the Keeler Tavern was there when the American Revolution’s Battle of Ridgefield happened and it has a cannonball embedded in the façade to prove it. New York City architect Cass Gilbert, designer of early skyscrapers like the Woolworth Building in New York City, kept all of the home’s Colonial charm and added to it! Cass Gilbert had a big impact on Connecticut’s architecture in Hartford, Waterbury, Waterford and New Haven. But there’s more to the Keeler Tavern than a pretty place! New research is enhancing the museum’s ability to tell women’s and African American history in programming for adults and children. The pandemic pushed many museums to reach out to their audience using new technologies. Hear more about how the Keeler Tavern Museum and History Center’s dynamic staff is telling their story and finding new audiences in 2020 with architectural historian Mary Donohue. Those toes will never know the feel of a ballet shoe. The sunlight that scorches through the clouds; she will eat that too. One year old, barely two, the gatekeepers of her stomach keep shovelling it through. Cannonballs of sugar fired into her veins - parents holding the wick, preparing to flicker. How long will it linger? It’s a forever thing; you don’t know that; I want to call you a silly twat, take you to town with ball and bat. But here’s the thing. It’s a lack of education. Your daughter is a bull, and if you keep feeding her like that, if you do not teach her the wisdom of a healthy life, then every single Starbucks and McDonalds will look like a matador’s muleta. And she will charge straight into the gates of hell. And you will lose her, and she will lose herself. Use your lightsaber, not as a way to cut her dreams in two, but to illuminate her chances of getting through this life without being broken into a million different pieces by all those sticks and stones. It is also seen around the world on flags, on medals given for bravery, on uniforms, and on military insignias. The story of the Maltese Cross reaches hundreds of years back into the past to a tiny island of rock called Malta, located about 80 miles off the southern coast of Italy, where a ragged band of warriors called the Knights of Saint John held out through 112 days of brutal fighting to defend Christianity from the Muslim scourge that was threatening all of Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean. You can make a small crater by throwing a rock into sand but why don't they look like the smooth, round craters on the moon? The answer is similar to how a pool reacts when you jump in and make a splash.

Winnipeg's Boats have been a favorite of mine ever since their 2nd record Cannonballs, Cannonballs. Lead singer/songwriter Mat looks like an angry civil servant, but he sings like a Muppet. Boats “Haircuts for Everybody!!” this is the track that made me a fan. Boats have just released their latest record A Fairway Full of Miners. When it came time to chat, the entire band and me crowded into their lush half-tour van, half RV. (Boats lovingly call their van “Beth.”) Once the mic was on, only three members of Boats would talk, but they had already made their first big mistake letting me inside their headquarters. Soon they had no choice but to tell me everything. Tracks played on the show... 1) Boats A Fairway Full of Miners “Getting Worst.jpeg” 2) Boats Cannonballs, Cannonballs “Haircuts for Everybody!” 3) Boats A Fairway Full of Miners “Great Skulls” ALL songs CANCON
Boats (from Winnipeg) are one of my favorite bands right now. I am not so sure why they are not getting more indie love! My interview with Boats frontman Mat was doomed from the get-go. Dodgy cell phone reception kept hijacking our conversation, but this did keep things interesting. Stay tuned for the last part of the interview where Mat says the most controversial thing a music lover could say. (Music geeks, you have been warned!) Tracks played on the show... 1) Boats, Cannonballs, Cannonballs (2010) "Haircuts For Everybody!" 2) Boats, Cannonballs, Cannonballs (2010) "Our Athletic Friends" 3) Boats, Cannonballs, Cannonballs (2010) "Movie Scores; We Hummed" 4) Boats, Cannonballs, Cannonballs (2010) "TV Scientist" ALL songs CANCON
This week's show is a bit of a monster. We do our best to answer your questions and there were tons of them - some on gear, others on process and technique. There's a little something for everyone, but you had best grab a bottle of water and some snacks ‘cause this one clocks in at over two hours. Michel Tcherevkoff is our Photographer of the Week.

Apologies for the initial poor audio quality in this episode, it returns to normal after about 15 minutes. We talk about the military in films, CSI as science fiction, the inflation of comic books, the Geneva convention in video games, Siri's views on abortion, fan-boys of every breed, and finally, Mythbusters. Oh, and pervy clerics. Our website: www.thinkstuffpodcast.com Email us at: email@thinkstuffpodcast.com
