Workplace violence in healthcare requires a comprehensive approach, including improved reporting, supportive policies, technology, and legal protections, to create a safer and more respectful environment for healthcare professionals. For this episode of the Straight Out of Health IT podcast, Dr. Rhoda Collins, Chief Nursing Officer at Kontakt.io, has a conversation with host Christopher Kunney about the rising issue of workplace violence against healthcare professionals. Dr. Collins explains that most workplace violence involves verbal abuse from patients, although physical assaults and lateral violence (among colleagues) also occur. She emphasizes the need to remove the stigma around reporting incidents and create a culture where workers feel safe seeking help. Dr. Collins identifies stress as a key driver of coworker-to-coworker violence and notes that improvements in diversity, inclusion, and communication have reduced such incidents over the years. She mentions the role of professional organizations and guidelines, such as those from the Joint Commission, which help hospitals address violence. Technology, such as wearable distress buttons, is also playing a growing role in preventing violence by enabling quick responses in emergencies.  Towards the end, Dr. Collins discusses legal measures, including laws that classify healthcare workplace violence as a felony in 32 states. She also encourages advocacy for federal legislation and promotes resources from organizations like the American Nurses Association and Emergency Nurses Association to help healthcare workers and institutions better handle workplace violence. According to Forbes magazine, the relationship between managers and their employees has a significant impact on their mental health, similar to the effect of a partner. My guest this week, NICU Nurse Manager, Felicia Torres Vaughn, understands this and works hard to build strong relationships with her staff. During our conversation, Felicia clarified some common misconceptions about managers and emphasized the importance of mentorship. She also encouraged the idea of embracing failure, as it provides an opportunity to learn and grow. I've had many mentors throughout my journey, and Felicia taught me a valuable lesson on what it means to be a compassionate and thoughtful leader. She does this most profoundly, by example, not expecting her staff to do anything she wouldn't do herself. As she spoke of her love for Mother Teresa, I noticed similarities in their service mindset, humble spirit, and desire to bring love and light to the people they serve.  Her advice for nurses who aspire to be leaders? I had the best conversation with Carla Stanley about her journey as a DNP student. I have to admit, I was a little intimidated when I saw all the letters behind her name but I had no need to be; she's delightfully down to earth. We discussed the types of programs, the application process, and the blood, sweat, and tears required to achieve such a goal. My respect and admiration only grew when I learned the ‘why' behind her multiple board certifications; Carla strives to be the expert in her field. I love it when she said, “If you can see me, you can be me” and she's using all the tools in her toolbox: her education, certifications, credentials, professional memberships, networking, and very soon, her Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree to improve health outcomes among black, indigenous, and people of color. Vida Plena (meaning ‘a flourishing life' in Spanish) is a new nonprofit organization based in Quito, Ecuador. Our mission is to build strong mental health in low-income and refugee communities, who otherwise would have no access to care. We provide evidence-based depression treatment which is highly cost-effective and scalable. For the very effective altruist, a TLDR summary: The problem: The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 5% of people in Latin America have depression, however, a lack of prioritization means that more than 3 out of 4 people in Latin America go untreated. Ecuador, in particular, has some of the highest rates of depression in the region: causing 8.3% of the total years lived with disability (YLD). The solution: Vida Plena's intervention is based on an evidence-based therapy which is recommended by the WHO as a first-line treatment for depression in low-income settings (WHO, 2020). This program is highly cost-effective as it is delivered by non-specialist community members, which a systematic review of 27 studies found that non-specialists can effectively administer therapy. How you can know this will be impactful: We are replicating a proven program model. The nonprofit organization StrongMinds, operating in Uganda, has treated 150,000 people using the same model of therapy and 85% of people in their program saw significant reductions in their depression. This success has led StrongMinds to be recommended by Founders Pledge (Halstead, 2019) and is the Happier Lives Institute's top recommendation (HLI, 2022). Despite an extensive body of evidence demonstrating the effectiveness and impact, Vida Plena is the first to introduce this model to Latin America. Current status: we have certified 10 local community facilitators and are currently running a pilot program with 10 support groups. We're looking forward to sharing the results of the pilot early 2023, but we estimate when fully optional, it will cost $17 to improve a recipient's wellbeing by one wellbeing-adjusted life year (WELLBY). Before long, some Ukrainian nurses who are fleeing the war in their country will be taking a journey of some six thousand miles, to call Louisiana their new home. The nurses' journey to relocate to a safer place comes courtesy of Ochsner Health in New Orleans, which has partnered with several organizations to make it happen. Global Nurse Partners, which brings internationally experienced nurses and U.S. healthcare facilities together for permanent positions, is among the groups Ochsner has worked with, along with CGFNS International, the American Hospital Association and the American Organization for Nursing Leadership. Together, these groups are providing two very valuable services. The Ukrainian care providers are receiving refuge and protection from an escalating conflict and communities around New Orleans and across Louisiana are getting trained nurses at a time when the U.S. does not have enough nurses to meet demand. Warner Thomas, president and CEO of Ochsner Health, sat down recently with Robyn Begley, CEO of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership and Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Vice President of workforce for the American Hospital Association, to discuss this relocation initiative and what the future may hold. Dr. James Odell, ND, OMD, L.Ac. is the Executive Director of the Bioregulatory Medicine Institute (BRMI). He has been practicing bioregulatory medicine in the United States for over two decades. ​ James graduated with a doctorate in naturopathy in 1980 from US International University (USIU was renamed Alliant International University in 2001 and no longer offers naturopathic medicine studies). After naturopathic college, James completed a three-year post-doctoral program in traditional Chinese medicine at Shantou University Medical College, with medical residences at Shantou University Teaching Hospital, Shantou Central Hospital, and Shiwan Hospital. Upon returning from China, he completed several internships in European bioregulatory medicine at the Paracelsus Klinik, Lustmühle, Switzerland. James is certified in acupuncture and a PDA provider with the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and is licensed in acupuncture in Kentucky, Colorado, South Carolina, and Utah. He is a Certified Tuina Instructor with the American Organization of Bodywork Therapies of Asia, and is a Certified Traditional Naturopath with the American Naturopathic Certification Board. For over 10 years, James was the education coordinator for the Biological Medicine Network, which conducted conferences on the principles and practices of European bioregulatory medicine. He has been practicing bioregulatory medicine in the United States for over two decades. ​ James graduated with a doctorate in naturopathy in 1980 from US International University (USIU was renamed Alliant International University in 2001 and no longer offers naturopathic medicine studies). After naturopathic college, James completed a three-year post-doctoral program in traditional Chinese medicine at Shantou University Medical College, with medical residences at Shantou University Teaching Hospital, Shantou Central Hospital, and Shiwan Hospital. Upon returning from China, he completed several internships in European bioregulatory medicine at the Paracelsus Klinik, Lustmühle, Switzerland. James is certified in acupuncture and a PDA provider with the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and is licensed in acupuncture in Kentucky, Colorado, South Carolina, and Utah. Today we're talking with Ashley Harwood of Ashley Hardwood Woodturning. Our first ever woodturner on the podcast, Ashley started about 9 years ago shortly after going to art school for sculpture and installation art. Knowing that she wanted to create things for a living, she originally thought she would start with glass blowing. However, after taking a woodturning class with her father, she decided to dive into the wood community. She now travels all over teaching woodturning classes and creating wood-turned art! When first starting out, Ashley displayed her work at the Charleston Farmers Market. Soon, she realized that there was also quite a bit of interest from people in woodturning as a hobby. So she wisely added teaching to her repertoire of income generation and began traveling and teaching wood-turning classes throughout the U.S.  Loving the ability to be her own boss, work with her hands, and being able to take something from a hunk of wood and create something unique and amazing are all of Ashley's biggest motivators.
