Steve interviews Jay Mariotti (00:16:12) from jaymariotti.substack.com. Jay is back on the podcast and of fire after having just returned from a trip to Chicago to watch the pathetic White Sox. Jay goes off on poor ownership in baseball, the Chicago Bears, and the first few weeks of the NFL season. After Steve is fooled by a pinned article, Jay does speak on a column he wrote two years ago about life after ESPN. Also, Christopher "Bulldog" Parker returns (01:08:48) to chat about being on the radio in 2024, his relationship with Mike Schopp, and the upcoming Sabres season. The guys spent a lot of time talking about The Tragically Hip's new documentary on Amazon, "No Dress Rehearsal." Chris also talks about the Bills hot start, looks back at being on location for big Sabres games. Steve starts the show with First Things First and covers the latest disaster facing the 2024 Braves, the incredible Italia victory over France, and the 2-1 start by the New Orleans Saints. The book club has a new baseball book about busts and a new Joe Posnanski book. The show ends with one last thing about an amazing night at Fenway Park watching Pearl Jam. The new clubhouse at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. is taking shape, marked by a recent “topping off” ceremony celebrating the completion of the steel structure for the 110,000-sq.-ft. building. This milestone is part of a $104 million project, nearly two-and-a-half years after the original clubhouse was destroyed by a fire caused by a contractor mishap with a blowtorch. During the “topping out” ceremony, members and staff signed the final steel beam before placing it, following the tradition of placing an evergreen tree on top. The new clubhouse is scheduled for completion by spring 2026. The timing of the ceremony coincided with the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship and a visit from Tiger Woods, who supported his son Charlie in the tournament. The Ridgewood Golf Course in Parma, Ohio is poised for a significant upgrade with the construction of a new clubhouse and event center, set to begin in August. Representatives from Albert M. Higley Co., the construction manager-at-risk, announced at a Planning Commission meeting that they anticipate breaking ground on the $12.3 million project in the first or second week of the month. The new 11,400-sq.-ft. structure will offer both indoor and outdoor seating, an expanded bar and lounge area, and more than 160 parking spaces. The World Handicap System, governed by the USGA and the R&A, recently lowered the minimum length requirement. Now, courses measuring at least 1,500 yards for 18 holes or 750 yards for nine holes are eligible for rating. This adjustment allows golfers to post their scores in the World Handicap System. Previously, around 600 par-3 and short courses did not qualify for score submission to the World Handicap. Short courses represent a growing market, and the aim is to be more inclusive and attract as many scores and players as possible. Chris Byrd, Director of Golf at Cape Fear Country Club, mentioned that the par-3 course offers beginners and juniors a comfortable space to learn before progressing to larger courses. The new handicap rules enable them to post scores and track their improvement. And more!

We revisit our Halloween special episode with Lamar Giles.******On Today's Show"The fear is like the ramp on the roller coaster. It's that build-up of adrenaline intention that you're having in that moment when that roller coaster is cranking. It's not the same fear of you walking through a dark alley at night and you sense someone's behind you in real life. That's a different type of fear that I don't know that anybody really wants. This is controlled fear. This is me going into it saying, Okay, I know this part's gonna be scary, but this part's gonna be fun and I want all of it." - Lamar Giles Lamar Giles says horror is a pressure valve. It has the ability to release pent-up anxiety and fear in a controlled, safe, and fun environment. That's why he'll watch Hellraiser at 4 a.m. to comfort himself when he can't sleep. While the genre isn't for everyone, he knows there are other young readers that will resonate with it the same way he did when he first read Stephen King at 11 years old.Giles' career has been full of mystery and thriller stories, but with the 2022 release of The Getaway, he has finally fulfilled his lifelong dream of writing a true horror novel. In anticipation of Banned Books Week, Brooklyn Public Library's collections manager Leigh Hurwitz joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to discuss how the recent, dramatic rise in book bans disproportionately affects young people, and why BPL has chosen to offer access to its half a million eBooks and audiobooks to every person in the U.S. between the ages of 13 to 21. Hurwitz, one of the librarians behind the groundbreaking digital library card program launched in April 2022, talks about how in its first eighteen months, Books Unbanned has helped more than 7,000 users in all 50 states to access the books they need. Hurwitz unpacks the range of reasons teens cite for needing the cards, including privacy, lack of transportation, and—in some places—the requirement to get a parental signature or use a deadname to acquire a physical card at the local library. They also explain the positive responses from Books Unbanned readers who are able to see marginalized aspects of their identities portrayed on the page for the first time. Hurwitz reads from their Vice article about the program. 18-year-old Amy is mourning her mother's death when we meet her in The Lighthouse, the debut novel by Takapuna-based Christopher Parker. Her father Kevin is desperate to help her, but fears that their relationship is broken beyond repair because he was away from home so much when Amy was growing up. He takes her to the seaside town of Seabook on America's West Coast, where the big tourist attraction is an historic lighthouse. There Amy meets a troubled young man called Ryan who's unintentionally about to cause his father a whole lot of grief. Christopher Parker tells Lynn Freeman that it was seeing a lighthouse in the distance while walking along Takapuna Beach that was the starting point for the novel.

Today's interview is the second in the Suicide Prevention Awareness Month series, an initiative that aims to offer additional resources to my listeners. My guest, Christopher Parker, is a suicide attempt survivor who hosts the podcast Coffee over suicide, which he describes as “a dramedy podcast about mental illness and choosing life over death one cup of coffee at a time.” Chris is a remarkable person who advocates for mental health and brings this difficult conversation into people's homes with his podcast. In this interview, I felt touched by how genuine and caring he was. With a contagious smile, he shared some of his story and the different path he's found to deal with personal struggles. His underlying message is one of hope, which is what I always want to bring to my listeners. Talk radio host Michael Medved and political science professor Christopher Parker consider the future of the parties and the nation. There was no first-round knockout. In fact, while the result of the race for the American presidency was not immediately clear in the days following the election, the early vote totals quickly dispelled any notion that the current president's aberrant behavior and haphazard management of the COVID-19 pandemic might have turned off a mass of his supporters. Rather, support for President Donald Trump has grown. The incumbent president eclipsed his 2016 vote total by at least 3 million votes, while gaining ground with Black and Latino voters. Unfortunately for the president, Joe Biden did even better, breaking the previous record for a presidential candidate in the popular vote, outgaining the 2008 total of his former boss, Barack Obama, by at least 3 million votes. How that would play out in the Electoral College remained to be seen when we sat down on Thursday morning with conservative talk radio host Michael Medved and University of Washington professor Christopher Parker for the latest episode of the Crosscut Talks podcast. They discussed what the continued support for the president says about the country, what it portends for the future of the Republican Party and how the Democrats might govern, given their new coalitions.

*Warning* This episode contains very sensitive topics including conversations about suicide. If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts please reach out to the hotlines listed below. *** Suicide is a very heavy topic. It is one that we often avoid because it is dark and can leave many of us in fear and confusion on how to respond when a loved one is struggling or if we have had our own thoughts of death. I had the honor of connecting with Christopher Howard, host of the Coffee Over Suicide podcast who graciously shared with us his own story of suicidal idealization starting as early as five years old. He grew up feeling very isolated and said that even as a young child he had this sense that “life was painful” and that he “was wrong.” Now as a grown man, he has different tools for coping and new ways to look at his mental health struggles. He shares with us the importance of taking ownership of our mental health illnesses and how we can take the responsibility of recovery away from pill and treatment and put it back into our own hands. If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts please know that you are not alone. Below are resources and hotlines that are available to you. Over the past 10 years, the United States has seen a rise in a new brand of conservatism focused on making America great again, a slogan which harkens back to a time that was only great for straight, white, Christian men. Today, we examine the factors that have contributed to the rise in reactionary politics by interviewing Professor Christopher S. Parker, professor of political science and co-author of Change They Can’t Believe In - The Tea Party and Reactionary Politics in America. We begin by discussing the differences between traditional and reactionary conservatism (23:00) and factors that have contributed to the recent rise in reactionary conservatism (29:00), such as religion (32:24) and social dominance orientation (34:35). We then turn our attention to the Tea Party movement and what made them so successful (36:54) and the factors that could contribute to a successful political movement on the left (39:57). We close by having a conversation about the differences between patriotism and nationalism (54:32) and how we can move forward to enact the change that WE believe in (59:30). *Strong Language* Other Topics Include: 00:30 - Catch up with Ty and Daphne 03:45 - BhD “Oh Lawd” News Segment 15:32 - Introduction of Segment 19:35 - Learn more about Chris Parker 42:45 - Race and the Progressive Politics 47:58 - The Language of Racialized Politics 51:12 - Black Trump Support (Kanye) 1:07:20 - Ty and Daphne Reflect on the Interview Resources: Professor Christopher Parker’s Twitter Handle - @blackbruin Change They Can’t Believe In - The Tea Party and Reactionary Politics in America - https://press.princeton.edu/titles/9954.html UW Professor (Chris Parker) Got it Right on Trump. "Procrastinação é igual a um cartão de crédito: é bem divertido até que você receba a conta." (Christopher Parker)
How do you get started on planning a renovation or building project? And how do you avoid procrastinating for so long that you never actually get started? I love this quote by Christopher Parker ... “Procrastination is like a credit card: it's a lot of fun until you get the bill.” We can, and often do, dress up procrastination as 'planning'. And often what it actually is instead fear, confusion and overwhelm. So, my aim with this episode is to help you recognise if you're procrastinating. And to help you move instead into PREPARING and PLANNING your project. In this episode, I show you how you can tell the difference between preparing and procrastinating ... I share with you how "preparing" feels ... and then what can go wrong and might make you slip into procrastination ... and then how to get it right so you can be productive with your time ... and some key action tips you can put in place now to get prepared for your reno or building project. Now, if you’re in the UA Community, it’s generally because: You’re super invested in getting a great outcome for your new or renovated home You’re aware that there’s a bunch of stuff you don’t know, and you’re worried about what that gap in knowledge might cost you extra in time, money and stress You feel there’s so much at stake, and you’re navigating this unknown territory with nerves and concerns. It seems that the more you find out, the more you realise you don't know. You want to be involved in your project, and have a voice in the process, and so you’re seeking to equip yourself with the know-how, tools, tips and strategies to do this Ultimately, you don’t want to be another disaster story. And you don’t have to be – and that’s why both you and I are here. Undercover Architect is all about helping you avoid the mistakes and heartache that many deal with renovating and building. So you can skill yourself up in what you need to know to make your home great, and have a successful project. BUT … You still haven’t started your project, have you? So let’s talk about what’s might be holding you back. And how you can switch that around so renovating or building your home doesn’t only become a possibility ... It actually becomes an achievable dream that you can stop delaying, and start doing sooner. Sound good? I think so too … Listen to the podcast now. FOR RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS PODCAST CLICK HERE

When San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem, he drew a firestorm of criticism and questions about his patriotism. Kaepernick says he is protesting racism and police brutality against communities of color. He continues to sit or kneel during the playing of the anthem and has been joined by other NFL players in support of his protest. Are his actions unpatriotic? Is his protest bringing awareness to racial divisions in the U.S.? Veteran Seattle sportswriter Art Thiel of SportspressNW.com and University of Washington political science professor Christopher Parker share their insights on this episode of Conversations.
