It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   VW'S DIESS TALKS ELECTRIFICATION AND THE VALUE OF TESLA We have a Q&A here with Automilwoche.   "If you don't develop combustion and electric vehicles on the same platform, the electric cars will be really good. That's why we decided to develop an independent e-platform."   How many times a month do you doubt that this radical approach may not the right one? "The last time I had doubts was 10 years ago. Since then, the goal and course have been clear."   "Plug-in hybrids are justified and are wrongly criticized so strongly. If you drive the new [plug-in] VW Tiguan, it can do 50 km to 60 km on elecric power. Many Tiguan customers drive 80 percent of their total driving distance with it. "   On range..."There has been a range contest among car manufacturers in the past few years. That will become less important. What matters will be that what is offered is environmentally friendly. Batteries that are too large and heavy are not good for the CO2 balance. Something in between is right."   On timing: "As long as electric mobility was in the niche with market shares below 1 percent, it made sense to only electrify existing platforms. We did that with the Golf and the electric version of the Citigo minicar. But now that volumes are coming into the markets, our own ID platform is the logical and best solution"   Do you understand how stock markets can create this situation? "I can understand it. Tesla is not valued as a conventional automotive company. Thanks to its high valuation, even ambitious expansion plans can be financed well via the market."   Read the full article here:   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vws-diess-talks-electrification-and-value-tesla   RIVIAN SELLS OUT OF RESERVATIONS SLOTS "Rivian confirmed that it has already sold out the reservation slots for the first version of its electric pickup truck. All without even giving the wider public access to the configurator. Last week, Rivian unveiled its final pricing and configurations for the first version of the R1T and R1S. The startup then opened up its configurator for people who have placed reservations with a $1,000 deposit on its vehicles over the last 2 years." reports electrek: "While Rivian hasn’t disclosed how many Launch Edition vehicles they are going to produce, it is the only version that will be produced between June 2021 and January 2022."   Rivian tweeted: “Thank you to our community of preorder holders for all the support and excitement — Launch Edition reservations are now full. Early configurator access continues for preorder holders to build our Adventure and Explore packages. Public configurator access begins 11/23 at 9AM PS.“   PORSCHE TAYCAN SALES TO EXCEED TARGET OF 20,000 THIS YEAR "Porsche CEO Oliver Blume has revealed to the German media that the brand expects to surpass its original sales target of 20,000 Porsche Taycan this year. That would be quite an achievement in these challenging times." write Motor1: "During the first nine months of 2020, Porsche sold 10,944 Taycans globally, which means that it would have to sell slightly over 9,000 to meet the target. Considering that in Q3 sales amounted to 6,464, it does not sound impossible. At 9,000+ units per quarter, the company would be at a rate of 36,000 per year. In the next five years (by 2025), the company intends to increase the share of plug-in car sales to 50% of the overall volume globally. It would mean that the brand soon will become more electric than ICE."   In Q2 Tesla produced ~6,300 S&X combined but that was Covid. In Q3 2020 ~17,000 S & X (1500 up from Q1, down from Q4 2019). If you split that in half, that's 8,500 Model S in the quarter. Or 34,000 annualized. The S probably sells more than the X but what ratio?   https://uk.motor1.com/news/456503/porsche-taycan-sales-20000-this-year/   PORSCHE TAYCAN DRIFTS FOR 42 KM, ENTERS GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS The Porsche Taycan has entered the Guinness World Records for the longest drift with an electric vehicle. The scene of the world record was the Porsche Experience Centre (PEC) Hockenheimring. Porsche instructor Dennis Retera did 210 laps on the 200 metre-long drift circle without the front wheels ever pointing in the same direction as the curve: after 55 minutes the sideways expert had covered a total of 42.171 kilometres.     CAMOUFLAGED TESLA MODEL Y SPOTTED IN SHANGHAI "As production nears, a camouflaged test vehicle has been recently spotted on the roads near the factory giving us a glimpse at some possible new features." says Drive Tesla Canada: "Zooming in, we can see what appears to be a large curved, raised area behind the steering of this Model Y, where typically the minimalistic dash is completely flat. Could this be a new display for behind the steering wheel, similar to the current Model S and Model X dashboards? There also appears to be a bulkier area behind the main 15-inch center display."   https://driveteslacanada.ca/model-y/camouflaged-tesla-model-y-spotted-in-shanghai-reveals-possible-new-dashboard/   FASTNED WANTS TO BUILD NINE HPC PARKS IN FRANCE "Fastned has received the first order from France. The highway operator Autoroutes Paris-Rhin-Rhône (APRR) has commissioned the Dutch company to build and operate nine charging parks. The French Ministry of Transport must still approve the contract." says electrive: "The sites are to be built along the highway connection from Paris to Lyon and from Dijon towards Switzerland. The sites will be larger than most of the charging parks that Fastned currently operates in Germany. Each charging park in France will be able to charge up to 16 vehicles at the same time – presumably with eight fast-charging columns with two charging points each. "   https://www.electrive.com/2020/11/23/fastned-to-build-12-hpc-parks-in-france/   NISSAN NOTE SPELLS BEGINNING OF END OF INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINE "Nissan Motor has shifted gears in the electrification of its vehicles with the unveiling of its all-new Note compact, exclusively available as a hybrid. The move means there will no longer be a gasoline-powered model of what is Nissan's bestselling car in Japan." reports Nikkei Asia."Nissan developed the e-Power system based on technologies adopted in its Leaf electric vehicle. Unlike the hybrid technologies of Toyota Motor and Honda Motor, which use a combustion engine and an electric motor to run vehicles, the e-Power system uses an engine only to generate electricity and an electric motor to get vehicles to move."   According to Nissan Executive Vice President Asako Hoshin: "We will concentrate [management resources] on electrification to lead a zero-emission society. The Note symbolizes the move."   The article concludes: "The new Note also marks a turning point for Nissan as it accelerates its global retreat from cars dependent on the internal-combustion engine.

Show #880   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 1st September 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Welcome to a new PATREON PRODUCER KEITH KLIPSTEIN from SolarPowernLight.com “Have you speculated about Battery Day.? I think it will be LIPOs +Sila with a Capacitor to buffer the 'absorption' the inbound regen electrons to capture more than the chemical battery can otherwise”   Welcome to a new PATREON PARTNER JUKKA KUKONEN from www.Shift2Electric.com. “I have been working with EVs over 10 years now and you can find me on www.Shift2Electric.com. In addition to my education work and consulting, I also teach EV Market and Technologies course to graduate students at the University of St Thomas”   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   SKODA ENYAQ IV ELECTRIC REVEALED "Following a number of teasers and design sketches, the new Skoda Enyaq iV SUV has finally been revealed in full. The pure-electric SUV will be available to order from late 2020, with prices starting from £33,450 before the Plug-in Car Grant (PiCG). Deliveries are expected to start in spring 2021." writes Driving Electric: "The Enyaq iV can be had with one of two batteries: 62kWh or 82kWh, with the latter good for a 310-mile driving range on a single charge. A choice of two or four-wheel drive is also offered, along with four trim levels. Skoda has used the Volkswagen Group's MEB electric-car platform to develop the Enyaq iV, making it a sister model to the Volkswagen ID.4 family SUV. The new car is the Czech manufacturer’s second pure-electric vehicle, after the Citigo-e iV city car"   "A cheaper 50 model, with a 55kWh battery will follow later, as will pricier four-wheel drive 82kWh Enyaqs: the 262bhp 80X and a sporty vRS model, with 302bhp." says WhatCar: "The battery you choose determines the level of standard equipment, with the £33,450 60 model featuring 19in alloy wheels, a 13in touchscreen infotainment system, ambient interior lighting, rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, keyless go and artificial leather upholstery. In addition to its bigger battery, spending the £5550 needed to upgrade to the 80 brings front parking sensors, a rear-view camera, sat-nav, a heated steering wheel and multiple driving modes designed to let you change the character of the car."   "There’s also a Founders Edition with the bigger battery, which starts from £46,995 after the PiCG, and gets 125kW fast-charging, 21-inch alloys, black leather upholstery and matrix LED headlights." according to CarBuyer: "Alongside the matrix LED headlights, the Founders Edition model gets an illuminated grille, and it looks like a black styling pack has been applied for a sporty look and extra contrast with the paint colour. At the very top of the range will be a flagship vRS model. It will be the first fully electric Skoda to wear the vRS badge and will use the same powertrain as the iV 80X, but power will be increased to 302bhp, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 6.2 seconds. Both four-wheel-drive models will be capable of up to 286 miles on a full charge."   https://www.drivingelectric.com/skoda/1540/2021-skoda-enyaq-iv-electric-suv-prices-specification-and-sale-date   https://www.whatcar.com/news/2021-skoda-enyaq-iv-electric-suv-revealed-price-specs-and-release-date/n21877   https://www.carbuyer.co.uk/news/171716/new-skoda-enyaq-iv-suv-launched-with-two-battery-sizes   BMW INEXT ELECTRIC SUV SPIED UP CLOSE LOSING SOME CLADDING "Sometime next year, BMW will reveal the flagship all-electric iNext SUV. The teaser campaign for it is well underway, but the latest batch of spy photos gives us our best look at the still-nameless technological tour-de-force. The test vehicle is wearing little cladding, showing off the SUV’s finer styling details, with close-up photos providing glimpses of the headlight and taillight designs, a funky C-pillar, and much more." according to Motor1: "The powertrain will be all batteries and electric motors, but it’ll arrive with three power outputs: 308 horsepower (229 kilowatts), 522 hp (389 kW), and 610 hp (454 kW). That power will go to all four wheels in a vehicle that’s sized to sit between the X3 and X5 when it goes on sale sometime next year."   373 miles or 600kms   https://www.motor1.com/news/441791/bmw-inext-electric-suv-spied-uncovered/   GLOBAL PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES JULY 2020 "After about a year of relatively low growth or noticeable decline inf global plug-in electric car sales, July 2020 finally brings us a strong bounce up. With close to 248,000 sales (the 4th best monthly result ever), sales improved by 76% year-over-year, and market share is up too, at 3.7% (7% decline in the overall car sales helped a little bit)." says InsideEVs.   Tesla Model 3 - 22,461 (#1 YTD: 164,800) Renault ZOE - 9,410 (#2 YTD: 46,511) Tesla Model Y - 7,540 (#11 YTD: 20,955) Wuling's Hong Guang MINI EV - 7,348 (outside top 20) Hyundai Kona Electric - 6,257 (#4 YTD: 25,549)   https://insideevs.com/news/441747/global-plugin-electric-car-sales-july-2020/   TESLA GIGA BERLIN SHOCKS WITH NEAR COMPLETION OF DRIVE UNIT FACILITY’S ROOFING "The rapid buildout of Gigafactory Berlin has been documented closely by a group of Tesla enthusiasts who have taken it upon themselves to monitor and share the developments in the upcoming vehicle production facility through photographs and videos. And as revealed recent videos and photos, it appears that the roofing for Tesla’s drive unit facility in the Giga Berlin Phase 1 area is nearing completion." reports Teslarati: "The construction of the drive unit facility in Giga Berlin was among the most notable developments in the massive site. After its pile-driving stage, prefabricated pillars and walls were promptly installed in the facility, and it did not take long before work on the roof started. Other facilities in the Phase 1 zone, such as the Body-in-White building, started taking shape soon as well.  Over the past weekend alone, several developments were observed on Giga Berlin. Apart from the drive unit building’s nearly completed roofing, the great hall of the paint shop has also shown a lot of growth."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gigafactory-berlin-drive-unit-facility-completed-video/   **TechMeme Ride Home**   300 VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 LAND IN SWEDEN FOR FIRST DELIVERIES "Volkswagen just released a video presenting the first customer ID.3 1ST cars arriving in Sweden. According to the German manufacturer, some 300 ID.3s arrived at the port of Södertälje on Monday (August 31) for the first deliveries in September. Together with 700 deployed in Norway a few days earlier, that would be a total of 1,000 in just those two markets. The total number of 1ST edition will be 30,000." according to InsideEVs: "Volkswagen's "secret" plan is to deliver simultaneously thousands of ID.3 1ST in Europe in September and score a huge number of registrations. Probably including several thousand in Germany alone. We guess that it will be a five-digit numbers, but maybe not necessarily over 20,000, as some customers might delay their purchase to get a complete software package. Only time will tell which EV model will win the "super September" which is expected to be an all-time sales record in Europe."   https://insideevs.com/news/441940/300-volkswagen-id3-lands-sweden/   AUDI LENDS STAFF TO PORSCHE TO RAMP UP TAYCAN PRODUCTION "Porsche can hardly keep up with production due to the high demand for the Taycan electric luxury car, so reinforcements are coming from the group’s sister company, Audi. 400 employees from Neckarsulm are moving to Zuffenhausen for two years to help out." says electrive: "The German publication Automobilwoche gleaned the news from an Audi spokesperson. The first Audi employees have already been working for the sister company since June, and more are to follow in the coming months across all areas of production. The Taycan has only been in production for the last year, but many orders were placed before production started that Porsche had already increased capacity to 40,000 units per year and hired 500 more employees than originally planned."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/31/audi-lends-400-employees-to-porsche-to-ramp-up-taycan-production/   AUDI E-TRON SPORTBACK LAUNCHED IN UK "Audi has launched its new e-tron Sportback in the UK, with pricing and specifications confirmed for the pure-EV that can cover up to 241 miles on a charge. The Audi e-Tron Sportback shares a platform and powertrain with the e-tron SUV, though features sleeker rear styling." reports NExt Green Car: "Launched as a 55 quattro variant, the new e-Tron Sportback gets a 95 kWh battery, though a 71 kWh 50 quattro model will follow later this year. Performance figures show a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds possible, when making use of Audi's Boost mode. This pushes power output up to 300 kW for a short time, from the normally available 265 kW.  the e-tron Sportback can charge at up to 150 kW on capable units. It brings charging to 80% down to around half an hour. Prices start at £79,900 for the entry-level S Line trim, and deliveries for the e-tron Sportback quattro are starting now."   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8979/audi-etron-sportback-launched/   1ST ELECTRIC ARMORED MONEY TRANSPORTER "This past week, major truck and van company MAN announced that its MAN eTGE electric van would be used as the “world’s first electrically powered and armoured money transporter.” Prosegur received this secure van in early August. The “money transporter” was converted to an adequately armored vehicle by STOOF. Many Prosegur vehicles travel relatively short distances every day (60–70 km/37–44 miles), but they carry so much weight that they have to be designed intelligently to avoid weight-related issues." according to Clean Technica: "The MAN eTGE should have a range of 115–130 km (71–81 miles). One vehicle is being tested right now around Potsdam, Germany."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/09/01/1st-electric-armored-money-transporter/   You can listen to all 879 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRENT KINGSFORD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DARREN FEATCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JOHN C SOLAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)               PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)  PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJEEV NARAYAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Show #742   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 8th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   RIVIAN R1T ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK LAUNCH DELAYED UNTIL 2021 "Rivian has confirmed that the launch of its R1T electric pickup truck will be delayed at least slightly." reports InsideEVs: "The reason is COVID-19. Planned for 2020, the new launch schedule calls for first deliveries of the electric truck sometime in 2021. When in 2021 will depend on a lot of factors, including how long the lockdown remains in place."   https://insideevs.com/news/408382/rivian-r1t-truck-delay-launch/   MERCEDES-AMG EQS ELECTRIC FASTBACK VS TESLA MODEL S & PORSCHE TAYCAN "For years, Germany’s Mercedes-Benz and BMW have postured about reproducible performance and track times for electric cars." write Green Car Reports today: "Yet neither of them have managed to present a fully electric model that—like the Porsche Taycan—represents the performance side of EVs in anything approaching the fervor shown in the Model 3 Performance. That’s likely to change with a top-performance version of the upcoming Mercedes EQS that might, like the fully electric 7-Series BMW confirmed last month is on the way, boast better performance than internal-combustion models.  To compete with the Model S Plaid, it would likely have outputs in the vicinity of 800 hp and 1000 lb-ft, according to reports. The EQS will already face a growing group of rivals that includes the Porsche Taycan, the Lucid Air, and the upcoming Jaguar XJ, plus the Cadillac Celestiq, a flagship fastback for the GM luxury brand. "   So how long until we see the Mercedes-Benz EQS AMG?   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127722_mercedes-amg-eqs-electric-fastback-could-challenge-tesla-model-s-plaid-porsche-taycan   SKODA CITIGO-E IV WITHDRAWN FROM SALE DUE TO HIGH DEMAND "Skoda’s first electric production car, the Citigo-e iV, has been temporarily removed from sale after all UK examples sold out in less than two months." says Autocar: "Roughly 400 units of the Bratislava-built electric city car were allocated to the UK market and they began arriving in dealerships in late January. By mid-March, all had been sold. The Citigo has now been removed from Skoda’s online configurator. The Citigo-e iV, sibling to the Volkswagen e-Up and Seat Mii Electric, is one of the most affordable mainstream EVs on sale, with a starting price of £16,955. It offers a claimed range of 161 mile."   https://www.msn.com/en-gb/cars/news/skoda-citigo-e-iv-withdrawn-from-sale-due-to-high-demand   WHY THE NEW SUPERB PHEV IS VITAL FOR SKODA "Škoda's has many electrified models on the way, including the Kodiaq iV, Octavia iV and Octavia RS iV petrol plug-in hybrids, with the fully electric Enyaq iV due to join the Citigoe iV. This armada is being led by the company's biggest, most expensive car, the Superb, in 1.4-litre iV form." reports Glenn Brooks  at just-auto: "Series production didn't get fully underway until year end, which was then followed by build for right-hand drive markets. UK deliveries commenced at the end of January. As at mid-February, which was the last time that Škoda reported progress, some 2,000 examples had been produced."   This sits along with the Golf GTE, the SEAT Leon, the Cupra eHybrid, the Audi A3 TFSIe, the Passat GTE. I would always caution on the DSG gearbox which I'm not a fan of.   https://www.just-auto.com/analysis/why-the-new-superb-phev-is-vital-for-skoda_id194309.aspx   THIN-FILM SOLAR CAR COVER CAN RECHARGE YOUR EV WHILE IT IS PARKED " Armor, a thin-film solar company located in France. One of its products is called ASCA, which uses semi conductor compounds based on organic polymers printed on flexible films. " says CleanTechnica: "The flexibility means ASCA thin-film solar products can be mounted on curved surfaces, something traditional solar panels cannot do. Recently, the company demonstrated a car cover embedded with ASCA thin-film solar panels. The thin-film solar panels cover an area of 4 square meters — enough to provide supplementary power to the vehicle and increase its range up to 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) a day based on the car being exposed to the sun for 8 hours."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/04/06/thin-film-solar-car-cover-can-recharge-your-ev-while-it-is-parked/   TESLA BOOSTS MODEL Y PRODUCTION CAPACITY IN FREMONT "Tesla is using the period of the widespread closure of its plant in Fremont, California, due to the Covid 19 pandemic to make several improvements, including increasing production capacity for the Model Y." says electrive: "Tesla also wants to increase the production of the Model Y, which only started in January 2020. Thus, the forced break in production is to be used to set up a new conveyor belt for the Model Y, called Phase 3. Tesla took over the Fremont plant from Toyota a good ten years ago. Since the production of the Model S started in 2012, there have been no significant breaks for rebuilding work. All expansions for the Model X, Model 3 and later the Model Y have been carried out during ongoing operations."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/04/07/tesla-is-boosting-model-y-production-capacity-in-fremont/   TESLA GETS IN TROUBLE FOR USING HAL 9000 FOR SENTRY MODE, SWITCHING TO PORTAL TURRET "Tesla apparently got in trouble for using imagery representing HAL 9000 from the movie ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ for Sentry Mode so it is switching to something that now seems inspired by a turret from the video game Portal." according to Electrek: "Now Tesla hacker green, who had access to an upcoming Tesla update in the early access program, reported on Twitter that MGM, who owns the rights to 2001: A Space Odyssey, has issued a copyright claim against Tesla forcing them to stop using the image."   https://electrek.co/2020/04/06/tesla-trouble-hal9000-sentry-mode-switches-portal-turret/   TESLA HIKING THE PRICE OF SELF DRIVING "Tesla plans to bump up the price of its "Full Self-Driving" feature on July 1, Elon Musk said in a tweet on Friday." reports a Business Insider story: "The add-on currently costs $7,000, but many of the capabilities it promises are still in development — essentially, buyers are paying for software updates that Tesla will release incrementally.  Musk also said in a Friday tweet that he hopes to introduce traffic-light and stop-sign recognition in the US in a few weeks, but Tesla has historically failed to meet the timelines its CEO has publicly set forth."   https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-will-hike-price-semi-autonomous-full-self-driving-package-2020-4   TESLA TO ROLL OUT WIFI GARAGE DOOR OPENING FEATURES INDEPENDENT OF HOMELINK "Elon Musk has indicated that Tesla will be utilizing WiFi integration to assist drivers in opening their smart garage doors. Automatic garage door opening is available through Homelink. However, some garage doors are not compatible with Homelink and instead use an internet connection through WiFi to operate." says Joey at Teslarati: "The new WiFi integrated opening system also alleviates the need to carry bulky garage door openers that can be lost or stolen, or even the need to pull out a smartphone to open the garage door."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-wifi-garage-door-opening-no-homelink/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   If you’re staying at home and not driving, what condition or state of charge are you leaving your EV parked up in?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 239 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #439   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 10th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   NEW AUDI AD CAMPAIGN AIMS TO COUNTER SKEPTICISM OF EVS There's a new Audi TV ad out with a great sense of humour, all about people having outdated perceptions of electric cars. Autoblog Green reports: "It's called "Not For You," and the 60-second ad opens on a man clad in robe and slippers who has come out of his home with his dog to fetch the morning paper. He watches as a garage door across the street opens to reveal an E-Tron connected to a charger. Then, he's transported to a variety of scenic locations — a dusty desert plateau, a snowy mountain range and rainy forest — and the not-so-scenic, crowded parking lot of a gas station, all to make points to counter doubts about range, charging infrastructure and performance of EVs."   [audio]   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/04/09/audi-ad-campaign-skepticism-evs/   FCA JOINS OPEN POOL WITH TESLA TO BEAT EUROPEAN CO2 FINES "Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has found a solution to its CO2 emissions problem. Starting next year, the European Union’s target for average CO2 emissions drops down to 95 grams per kilometer." says Jalopnik: "FCA’s collective average emissions in 2018 amounted to 123g/km. According to the Financial Times, FCA will pay Tesla hundreds of millions of euros for emissions offsetting credits to avoid what could be billions of euros in fines when the new target becomes law in 2021."   Julia Poliscanova, a senior director at Transport & Environment: "“For Europe, this is the first time that completely separate manufacturers have pooled their emissions together as a commercially viable compliance strategy. Once you’ve set up a pool, it is valid for several years.”   Engadget say: "It was expected that car makers would pool their own sub-brands together. VW can use improving emissions with its regular brands to offset exotic brands like Porsche and Lamborghini, for example. However, this (along with a deal between Mazda and Toyota) is the first time two wholly separate car companies have agreed to pool their emissions in Europe, and shows the pressure on companies to electrify their lineups. This sort of deal isn't completely unusual for Tesla. In 2018 alone it made $103.4 million by selling zero-emissions credits, and it made $279.7 million the year before that. The EU pact could significantly pad Tesla's bottom line, though, and it's coming at a good time. "   https://jalopnik.com/fca-joins-open-pool-with-tesla-to-beat-european-co2-fin-1833869284   https://www.engadget.com/2019/04/07/fiat-chrysler-to-pay-tesla-to-avoid-eu-fines/   JAGUAR I-PACE ACCOUNTS FOR ALMOST 6% OF JAGUAR SALES IN U.S. "In March, Jaguar sold in the U.S. 212 Jaguar I-PACE, which is over 5.7% of its total result of 3,679 (by the way, up 13% or 419 units year-over-year). Sales during the first quarter amounted to 608, while cumulatively the total is now 1,001." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "It prompts us to ask whether the I-PACE or other new BEVs like the upcoming Audi e-tron will be able to match Tesla at some point in the future?"   Forum member Scottf200: "Is this one of those scenarios where you can make statistics sound like whatever you want be it good or bad? I mean 6% sounds good on the surface but less ~200 per month does not. JAN FEB       MAR — 2019 U.S. EV SALES 210 186      212      — Jaguar I-Pace"   https://insideevs.com/jaguar-i-pace-sales-u-s-march/   SURVEY: 60% OF UK ADULTS WILLING TO PURCHASE AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE TO BENEFIT THE ENVIRONMENT "Poor air quality in cities is caused by a combination of traffic, construction sites, building energy use for utilities such as heating and hot water, as well as domestic appliances and even cleaning products. In a survey of 2,000 adults across the UK, Nissan’s research found that...60% of respondents being willing to purchase an electric vehicle to benefit the environment, only a quarter of respondents were aware of the financial incentives available to help them do so. This contrasts with the 43% that said they were more likely to make the move to electric as a result of financial incentives."   FORMER MOTOGP CHAMP TO ATTEMPT ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE SPEED RECORD "Originally unveiled in 2013, Voxan Motors is prepping its electric motorcycle, the Wattman (cute, right?), to take to the Bolivian salt flats in an attempt to unseat the current electric motorcycle land speed record holder. The rider they’ve enlisted to make this attempt is none other than Max Biaggi."reports RideApart.com today: "Biaggi will attempt to break the standing record currently held by Jim Hoogerhyde, who took the Lightning SB220 electric motorcycle up to 327.608km/h (203.566mph) in 2013. Voxan and Biaggi are aiming to break the 330kph (205mph) mark with this attempt. Voxan presents the Wattman as “the most powerful electric motorcycle in the world” with numbers like 200 hp and 200 Nm of torque (that’s 147.5 ft-lbs) with a motor that spins up to 10,500 rpm. Voxan claims the bike’s 0-100 mph time as 5.9 seconds, its 0-80 percent charge time as less than 30 minutes, and a range from fully charged at 180km (not quite 112 miles)."   https://insideevs.com/attempt-electric-motorcycle-speed-record/   SKODA PREPARES THE LAUNCH OF THE E-CITIGO ŠKODA will be providing ten prototypes of the all-electric CITIGO E-PILOT built upon the basis of Volkswagen e-up! for selected customers to test in the Czech Republic › The participants’ experience from everyday use and their specific suggestions will serve as important feedback before the launch of eMobility of traditional Czech brand › Prototypes have completely different characteristics than the later all-electric CITIGO production model   Pedro from PushEVs.com: "We already know that the production version will cost around 19.000 euros and have a WLTP range of 270 km (168 miles), which means that the battery capacity will double from 18,7 to 37,4 kWh when compared to the current Volkswagen e-Up – on which it’s based on. The current Volkswagen e-Up battery pack is made with 204 battery cells from Sanyo/Panasonic with 25 Ah each in a 102s2p configuration. It’s expected that the Volkswagen e-Up 2.0 and the SKODA e-Citigo get 50 Ah battery cells from Samsung SDI, however since CATL is also a battery cell supplier for the VW Group, I don’t count them out yet."   https://pushevs.com/2019/04/04/skoda-prepares-the-launch-of-the-e-citigo/   TESLA REPORTEDLY WORKING ON MODEL S & X POWERTRAIN UPGRADE "Tesla and CEO Elon Musk have said that there are no immediate plans to use the Model 3’s 2170 cell format S and X vehicles. The CEO has also made it clear that a “refresh” is not something the automaker does, at least in the traditional sense. However, new information first reported on Electrek suggests that Tesla is already working on a new motor upgrade for the Model 3’s more expensive siblings." says InsideEVs today: "Currently, the Model S and Model X don’t employ the same system. Instead, they use AC induction motors. If this update happens as reported, that will change. While we don’t have concrete evidence that Tesla is making such plans, the idea makes perfect sense. Electrek learned from its sources that the Model 3 motor setup can be over 4 percent more efficient than the system in Tesla’s flagship offerings."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-s-x-new-electric-motors/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 11th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   An update on a story I mentioned briefly yesterday...with many news outlets confirming the news such as Bloomberg saying "Nissan Motor Co. said it will investigate instances of misconduct involving falsified data about exhaust emissions and fuel economy, the second controversy in less than a year for the automaker whose vehicle-inspection scandal had led to the recall of about 1.2 million vehicles. The data falsification...occurred on 19 models across five plants in Japan. During the checks, Nissan found out that employees misrepresented temperature and humidity data in the testing chamber and manipulated emission data on carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The automaker has hired a law firm to investigate the matter further."   TESLA TO BUILD GIGAFACTORY IN SHANGHAI We knew it was coming, just a matter of when not if, and it has just been confirmed Tesla will build a factory in Shanghai, the city government announced. WSJ said: "The electric-car maker will set up a plant with an annual capacity of 500,000 vehicles, the Shanghai authorities said in a statement. Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk was in Shanghai to sign a memorandum of cooperation with Mayor Ying Yong". But why build a factory there? Once Tesla Shanghai has the new Gigafactory at capacity, they'll be building half a million cars for the Chinese market without paying the new import duties. Plus they could move the cheaper cars, like base Model 3 and base Model Y to be built there with lower costs, to increase margins. We know that Freemont is full and Elon has said in the past the Model Y won't be built there. Tesla said in a statement to Bloomberg: "We expect construction to begin in the near future after we get all the necessary approvals and permits. From there, it will take roughly two years until we start producing vehicles and then another two to three years before the factory is fully ramped up to produce around 500,000 vehicles per year for Chinese customers. Tesla is deeply committed to the Chinese market, and we look forward to building even more cars for our customers here. Today’s announcement will not impact our U.S. manufacturing operations, which continue to grow.” "Tesla’s lone car-assembly plant is in Fremont, California, where it’s built about 88,000 cars through the first half of this year, and it has a giant battery factory in neighbouring Nevada. After moving ahead in China, the world’s largest market for electric vehicles, Tesla has said it will reveal plans toward the end of 2018 to build a plant in Europe." Although this isn't a financial podcast and I never pretend to understand the finer subtleties of a balance sheet, TEsla has $2.7bn in cash at the end of Q2 2018, with a plan for the Model 3 to make them profitable between now and the end of the calendar year. China has been an investor in Tesla before, with Tencent Holdings Ltd. spending $1.8 billion to buy a 5 percent stake in March 2017.   MERCEDES ECITARO IS AN FULLY ELECTRIC CITY BUS At a major launch event yesterday, Mercedes revealed their all electric eCitaro bus. They said the powertrain has electric motors at the wheel hubs. Lithium-ion batteries with a total capacity of up to about 243 kWh provide the power. The range is 150km. They are modular in design: the batteries are split between up to ten modules, each supplying around 25 kWh. As well as two battery modules on the vehicle roof, the standard equipment includes four modules in the rear of the bus. In the eCitaro, these are taking the place of today's powertrain combination of combustion engine and transmission. Depending upon customer requirements, another two or four battery modules are mounted on the roof of the eCitaro. They're using prismatic cells. Mercedes-Benz cools the batteries to ensure that they remain at the ideal temperature, thereby ensuring maximum charging capacity, performance capability, and service life. This cooling is undertaken by a separate battery cooler mounted on the roof. At extreme outside temperatures, the standard passenger-compartment climate control system is used to boost the cooling of the batteries. They see an upgrade path too as battery technology increase: "transport operators will even be able to increase the range of the existing eCitaro buses by swapping out the batteries at a later time and thereby further increase the operational flexibility." They are also talking about solid state batteries, which they predict will offer a 30% increase from 243kWh to 400kWh from 2020. However due to design these won't be swappable with the Li-Ion batteries but sold as a different range.   VOLKSWAGEN EXPANDS "ROADMAP E" — AN E-MOBILITY ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE IN CHINA On Monday 9th July Volkswagen Group China signed a "Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)" with JAC and SEAT in Berlin, to establish a new "Research & Development" center with a focus on developing electric vehicles, connectivity and autonomous driving technologies, as well as a competitive platform for battery electric vehicles (BEV). SEAT brand will be introduced to China by 2020/2021. This new Memorandum of Understanding will play a key role in Volkswagen Group’s e-mobility plans for China, in order to meet the demands of Chinese customers. Together with JAC and SEAT, Volkswagen Group China will establish an R&D center to develop electric vehicles, connectivity and autonomous driving technologies specifically tailored to the Chinese market, including relevant parts and components and core technologies, with completion planned for 2021.   CHINA'S CATL TO BUILD ITS FIRST EUROPEAN EV BATTERY FACTORY IN GERMANY "Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) will build its first production site in Europe in Germany, agreeing a major contract with BMW to supply lithium-ion batteries." according to a report from Reuters, which adds to more of what we've previously reported on this story:" A contract to build the new plant was signed on Monday during a visit to Germany by China's Premier Li Keqiang. Around 240 million euros (S$379 million) will be invested in the first phase of the project, Wolfgang Tiefensee, Thuringia's minister of economic affairs, told journalists. BMW plans to source 4 billion euros of battery cells from CATL over the next few years, with 1.5 billion euros coming from the new site in Erfurt in eastern Germany, the carmaker's purchasing head, Markus Duesmann, said. CATL, the world's largest maker of battery cells for electric vehicles, said the new factory was just its first step in Europe." says BusinessTimes.com.sg: "The CATL factory will create about 600 jobs and reach production of 14 gigawatt hours (GWh) by 2022. CATL reached shipments of 12 GWh in 2017." Deussmann also added: "BMW had invested in some of the costs for the CATL factory in Erfurt, but declined to say how much. Duesmann said BMW was investing in cell research but a decision on whether to produce battery cells itself had not been made. "I don't rule it out," he said. BMW is "very comfortable" with two suppliers of battery cells at the moment, but could add a third and is in talks with eight manufacturers, he added".   NOW ANYONE CAN CONFIGURE A MODEL 3 LA Times reports: "Anyone can access the Tesla’s Model 3 “online configurator” and lay down a non-refundable $3,500 cash payment; the delivery date is determined after the money’s been transferred to Tesla." I tried it here from the UK, but with my US VPN connected, and the TEsla.com site hadn't updated. "The stated wait time a Model 3 runs from immediate delivery to as many as nine months for the company’s long-promised $35,000 base price version. But each customer is informed individually about his or her specific delivery date." Tesla replied to a request for comment with this: "“Tesla has always required this deposit for all of its vehicle orders, including Model S and Model X, given that we build cars to our customers’ specifications. That deposit goes towards the purchase price of the vehicle.” We heard at the start of July, when Tesla confirmed they had made 5,000 MOdel 3's per week, that the official number of outstanding orders was 420,000.   DHL OFFERING NEW YORKERS FREE ZERO-EMISSION RIDES DHL, the Official Logistics Partner of Formula E, is offering New Yorkers a free eShuttle service from key locations across Manhattan this week in an effort to reinforce the global logistics company’s commitment to drive progress in sustainability and e-mobility. DHL has teamed up with Nissan ahead of the 2018 Qatar Airways New York City E-Prix to roll out a fleet of 14 Nissan Leafs that will be available for the public to take free zero-emission rides. The DHL eShuttle service will be running from July 11 through July 13 in the lead up to the New York City E-Prix taking place in Red Hook, Brooklyn, this weekend. The service will be offered from 10am to 4pm at three different locations The service is open to members of the public who download the DHL Mobility Quest app.   SKODA IS PREPARING 'E-RS' ELECTRIC CAR HALO EVS TO MIRROR VRS Skoda is to make a performance variant of its upcoming all-electric model, based on the Vision E Concept from the 2017 Frankfurt motor show and should be on sale by the end of 2020. Tim Pollard, writing for the always-excellent CAR Magazine here in the UK reports that: "Skoda is working on a range of performance electric vehicles loosely dubbed e-RS to indicate the EV equivalent of the Czech company’s vRS go-faster brand. Global sales and marketing chief Alain Favey told CAR magazine that Skoda is planning performance spin-offs of its future EVs, which are in development and ready to launch from next year. First up is the e-Citigo, basically a Czech-branded Volkswagen e-Up testbed, due for launch in late 2019; but this is just the warm-up act for the main event - the new bespoke EV crossover due a year later in autumn 2020, which will be the first to get Skoda’s proposed new e-RS derivative." Favey said to CAR: "There will be an e-RS,the logic is the same as for vRS. It’s not about performance as such… it’s more about the look, the sporty seats, the experience. That’s the spirit of vRS.’ "Expect a 300-mile range, design consistent with regular Skodas, a fast-charging network at main dealers, new, floating instrumentation and the very latest in connectivity, according to Favey."   https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/industry-news/skoda/skoda-e-rs-electric-vrs-performance-cars-from-2020/   VW EYES GOODWOOD RECORD WITH ITS I.D. R PIKES PEAK ELECTRIC RACER "Hardly content with shattering the all-time record at Pikes Peak, Volkswagen wants its I.D. R Pikes Peak electric race car to be the one to beat on other tracks. It's taking the racer to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the south of England this week, with designs on setting not only the electric car record at the Goodwood Hillclimb, but perhaps the overall benchmark too." according to Engadget: "The Goodwood festival marks the competitive debut of VW's car in Europe, while it will also host the European debut of Tesla's Model 3."   https://www.engadget.com/2018/07/09/vw-pikes-peak-electric-race-car-goodwood-hillclimb/   MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV REMAINS UK’S NUMBER ONE PLUG-IN VEHICLE "The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV continues to be the UK’s best-selling plug-in electrified vehicle. Sales of Mitsubishi Motors’ petrol/electric plug-in hybrid SUV totalled 537 units in June and 3,732 units so far this calendar year, ahead of every other pure EV and plug-in hybrid on the market" as reported yesterday by Automotive world.     COMMUNITY   You can listen to all previous 175 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.
