Today is Comic Book Day, Daughter Day, Cooking Day, Roadkill Day, Quesadilla Day, Binge Day, Lobster Day and One Hit Wonder Day. Jim and John have thoughts on all of those things, especially One Hit Wonder Day. Our listeners text in some of their favorite tunes and we use them as "bumpers" during the show this morning. Then a Quick Poll asks the question: "Have you ever had room service"? Maino says "yes", the Mayor says "no". Our listeners take the poll and seem to side with Maino on this one. Maino and the Mayor is a part of the Civic Media radio network and airs Monday through Friday from 6-9 am on WGBW in Green Bay and on WISS in Appleton/Oshkosh. Send us a Text Message.Embark on a vivid recollection of the legendary "Band of Brothers" and the formidable journey of Easy Company, as we analyze the series' impact on film and its reverberations through the industry. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg's masterpiece set a standard for World War II portrayals, balancing the authenticity of Ambrose's narrative with harrowing on-screen chemistry. Our conversation adventures through the growth of its stellar cast, once fresh faces now etched into the annals of stardom. We juxtapose the character arcs and boot camp rigor with "The Pacific," stirring a potent brew of camaraderie and raw storytelling.Unveil the harrowing tale of "Three-Body Problem," where Netflix transports us into the existential fray of a potential alien conquest. Our dissection of this interstellar chess game unearths humanity's fractured response to a cosmic SOS — a Pandora's box of alien communication that questions our very survival. Engage with us as we dissect themes of trust and division, all while the clock ticks towards a rendezvous with an otherworldly adversary. Finally, weave through the multiverse in "Crisis on Infinite Earths," with the Flash leading us on a wild chase through realities twisted and turned. We critique the latest superhero fare, from the Flash's timeless encounters to the strategic battles in "Midnight Suns," lamenting over a missed opportunity for more dynamic gameplay. Our free-spirited discussion then swings to celebrating Free Comic Book Day, culminating in our listener-driven X-Men poll, where we crown favorites and bond over the rich tapestry of comic book lore. Welcome to September 25th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate one-hit wonders and unsung heroes. By definition one-hit wonders are songs by artists that make us swoon only once before fading into obscurity. So in honor of National One-Hit Wonder Day, which songs fit that description for you? Every comic book fan knows the name, Stan Lee. But you may not be familiar with his partner, Jack Kirby. Together they created Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and the X-Men. Stan was the writer and Jack was the artist. Jack had been working in comics years before the two teamed up, creating his most famous character as World War II broke out. If you've ever seen Captain America punching Hitler in the face, Jack drew that. Shortly after he was drafted by the Army and assigned as a scout because he was able to quickly draw reconnaissance maps. After returning to the United States, Jack met Stan Lee and the rest is history. On National Comic Book Day, celebrate the men and women behind the heroes who may just prove that truth is more amazing than fiction. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. If you can't make it to Inner Circle, the library will also be handing out free comics in celebration. You can learn more about that here: https://www.ifpl.org/event/free-comic-book-day/

Things Are About To Get Spooky! Welcome to September 25th, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate spooky searches and unsung heroes. As a child Ed Warren grew up in a haunted house. His future wife, Lorraine realized that she had clairvoyant abilities. When they married, the two became world-renowned paranormal investigators, helping people with hauntings and supernatural phenomena. Among their most famous cases were Annabelle, a possessed doll and the Amityville Horror. They became so well known that Ed was even recognized by the Catholic Church as a demonologist. The Warrens' story has inspired amateur ghost hunters around the world to seek out haunted houses, and signs of spiritual activity. You may not be a believer but on National Ghost Hunting Day, you can celebrate with your internet search that may just change your mind. Every comic book fan knows the name, Stan Lee.
