Carolyn and Kenny outline their journey with their son's addiction, which included a suicide attempt, overdoses, developing an eating disorder, and their discovery of Allies In Recovery. Carolyn and Kenny share how Allies has been a major lifeline for them during their son's battle and now 14 months of sobriety. Karla adds in her clinical knowledge and expertise as a group facilitator for family members. Heather explores the complex topic of manipulation in the context of addiction and family dynamics. When your child is using substances, it's common to experience behaviors that feel manipulative or self-serving. However, Heather emphasizes the importance of stepping back to see these actions through a compassionate lens, which can empower parents to respond with clarity rather than react out of frustration or hurt. Heather covers: Understanding Manipulation: What manipulation is and isn't, and how labeling behaviors as manipulative can reduce loved ones to harmful stereotypes. Influence vs. Desperation: How to distinguish when behaviors stem from true manipulation versus desperation or an attempt to meet a basic need. A Compassionate Perspective: Shifting from a “victim-perpetrator” mindset to a more empowered approach, recognizing manipulation as a universal human behavior rather than one solely tied to addiction. Strategies for Intentional Responses: Tips for responding thoughtfully, using the CRAFT approach (Community Reinforcement and Family Training). With insights drawn from her own experiences, Heather shares the importance of language, self-awareness, and finding less charged ways to label challenging behaviors. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to navigate difficult behaviors with compassion and maintain peace of mind in the face of addiction. Community Reinforcement and Family Training (aka CRAFT) is a system for helping friends and family members change the way that they interact with someone they love who has an unhealthy and/or dangerous relationship with substances. CRAFT teaches family members how to stay connected, increase communication, and effectively encourage their loved one toward treatment, while taking care of themselves in the process. This episode centers around what parents need to know about CRAFT to have the best possible chance at having their child accept help for their substance misuse. It's one where you may want a notebook to capture the steps and actions involved in this very important process. This podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsLearn about The Woods, our private online community for dadsFind us on Instagram: @hopestreamcommunityDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. Coming Up for Air - Families Speak to Families about Addiction
Our hosts speak with Dr. Julie McCarthy, Associate Psychologist at McLean Hospital and Assistant Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School. She completed her bachelor's degree at Tufts University and clinical psychology doctoral training with a focus on schizophrenia research at the University of Maryland, College Park. She completed her pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral fellowship in addiction research at McLean Hospital, and she is currently a principal investigator in the Division of Psychotic Disorders. Dr. McCarthy has received funding from the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute on Drug Abuse, Harvard Medical School, and philanthropic support. Her research aims to identify biopsychosocial treatment targets and develop and evaluate interventions for individuals and families, such as Community Reinforcement and Family Training for Early Psychosis and substance use. She is a CRAFT-certified therapist, supervisor, and trainer. Dr. McCarthy uses a multimodal telehealth approach to better understand and address barriers to care and promote recovery initiatives informed by people with lived experience through community-engaged research.
“Nobody wants to be somebody with a serious substance use problem. Nobody wants to be addicted to a substance. I mean, it doesn't feel good. Dependency doesn't feel good. And we end up in there anyway, right? So I think if we can bring compassion and understanding to, wow, it must really be working in a way that's really powerful for them to keep pursuing it. And then you've got the physical effects of substances, right? So then our bodies physically get dependent, you know, so it starts out as like, it's probably working for an emotional or something in our life and then we become physically dependent on it. And then it's a whole nother host of things in terms of how do you stop it? And people don't fully understand treatment in terms of there's medications available.” So says Carrie Wilkens, PhD, a psychologist who is attempting to change the way we think about and address recovery and treatment—specifically by simply presenting evidence for what motivates change. AFter all, she is the co-president and CEO of CMC: Foundation for Change, a not-for-profit with the mission of improving the dissemination of evidence-based ideas and strategies to professionals and loved ones of persons struggling with substance use. As you'll hear in this conversation—and throughout the entire series—we have not collectively been served by the mono-myth of addiction, that it's only solved through harsh intervention and confrontation, that addicted people must hit rock-bottom, and that any involvement from concerned family and friends is inherently co-dependent or enabling. As Dr. Wilkins explains, this simply isn't true: In fact, evidence overwhelmingly suggests that harsh confrontation and intervention works AGAINST recovery, and that there is a very specific and meaningful role for family to play in what can often feel like a family illness. The CMC:FFC team's Invitation to Change approach is an accessible set of understandings and practices that empower families to remain engaged and be effective in helping their struggling loved one make positive changes. The approach has been widely used across the country and is utilized in trainings with laypeople and professionals. She is co-author of the award-winning book Beyond Addiction: How Science and Kindness Help People Change, a practical guide for families dealing with addiction and substance problems in a loved one based on principles of Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT), and co-author of The Beyond Addiction Workbook for Family and Friends: Evidence-Based Skills to Help a Loved-One Make Positive Change. Dr. Wilkens is also the Co-Founder and Clinical Director of the Center for Motivation and Change, a group of clinicians serving all ages in NYC, Long Island, Washington, DC, San Diego, CA, and CMC:Berkshires, a private, inpatient/residential program for adults. Dr. Wilkens has been a Project Director on a large federally-funded Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) grant addressing the problems associated with binge drinking among college students. Almost everyone knows someone who is battling a drug or alcohol problem. But most people have no idea what to do about it. Should you step in or step back? Support groups, like Al-Anon, encouraged people to detach from a loved one with a substance use disorder. But detachment doesn't help. Connection does. That's what Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) is about. It's a set of skills family members learn and practice. Within 12 weeks, about 75% of loved ones with a drug or alcohol problem get into recovery. Laurie MacDougall is a CRAFT trainer who has a personal reason for helping families — her adult son battled drug addiction. Some of the things Laurie shares are the skills that can improve communication, the misconceptions about substance abuse, and the truth about how to increase the chances that a loved one will accept help. In this podcast, we discuss and assess the strengths and weaknesses of different levels of intervention. We learn that:The vast majority of families who live with an addict or alcoholic in their midst do not seek help for themselves or for their loved ones, despite having to live with the chaos and desperation that addiction imposes on a family.A family intervention, absent a professional, requires meticulous planning, teamwork, leadership, a clear understanding of roles, and air-tight execution. Not much room for error or freelancing. (Read the book Love First, authored by Debra and Jeff Jay.)Hiring a professional interventionist may be costly but could pay off in the long run. The professional is the firm, resolute voice of reason, and is unlikely to be taken in by the addict's attempt to slip through a crack in the wall. The newest form of intervention, CRAFT, which stands for Community Reinforcement and Family Training, is based on teaching the entire family to think and act in a healthier way so as to pave the way for the alcoholic to choose to recover.

This week's episode is very special because #1 Joey is with us for this one. And #2: It's going to be a 3-way conversation with me, Joey, and our life coach Heather Ross. If you've listened to any of our episodes, you've probably heard me mention her, or you might have heard one of her 2 episodes we've already published - #10 and #34. In this Safe Home episode, we will be talking about how the CRAFT method has helped our family, and you'll hear from both sides - the parents' side and the teen's side. CRAFT is an acronym that stands for Community Reinforcement and Family Training. This is the approach that is scientifically proven to get more people into recovery than the old-fashioned approaches like tough love and interventions. The basis of CRAFT is the positive rewards that the loved one heaps on the addicted person when they are doing favorable behaviors. A key concept in CRAFT is that the relationship is more important than their sobriety. This method shifted our family so much that I credit it to keeping our son alive for these past few years. I'm very excited to share some details of the CRAFT approach with you. =============== RESOURCES: Heather's information: Website: HeatherRossCoaching.com Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/living-with-your-childs-addiction/id1543141299 Other resources mentioned in this episode: Beyond Addiction: How Science and Kindness Help People Change: https://motivationandchange.com/family-services/resources-for-families/ The CRAFT Approach: https://drugfree.org/article/craft-approach-encouraging-healthy-constructive-positive-changes-family/ Never Use Alone: https://neverusealone.com/ or 800-484-3731 How to get free Narcan: https://www.goodrx.com/naloxone/narcan-naloxone-at-home-free Safe Home is created by Joseph Nakao and Beth Syverson Music written and performed by Joseph Nakao Cover art by Joseph Nakao, photo by Beth Syverson www.SafeHomeFamilies.com TIME STAMPS: 3:30 Overview of Joey's struggles 6:40 Joey's new job has helped stabilize him 7:40 Alternative healing we've found to be helpful 11:32 How Heather and CRAFT helped save our family 16:24 Putting our kids under the microscope 19:29 Addiction causes hiding and masking 21:20 Changing the conversation with our addicted loved one 23:28 What Joey and Helanna received from substances 27:04 The goal is CONNECTION, not sobriety 33:25 Why some parents have trouble with the CRAFT Method 36:30 Sliding through life pre-crisis, asleep at the wheel 39:08 What our kids want from us 41:16 Enabling, Narcan, “rock bottom,” and stigma --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/safe-home-podcast/message

As many times as that line has been used, it's still a really common cover in the moment we confront our kids. Yet, sometimes our kids are really good at hiding their substance use or addiction because the signs are actually not obvious. It's shocking and confusing when our incredible, thoughtful, and high-achieving kids are battling something so dangerous. In this episode, I'm joined by author, and certified parent and life coach, Cathy Taughinbaugh. Cathy is a Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) trained coach through the Center for Motivation and Change and a parent coach with the Partnership to End Addiction. Cathy is an expert in helping parents connect with their kids through an approach that is driven by compassion and positivity which she shares in her book. If you're tired of blaming, shaming, and lashing out in response to your child's addiction, this conversation is going to encourage you and remind you that there is another way to address the problems and the pain. In this episode, you'll learn: The most common mistakes parents make in setting boundaries with their kidsWhat the CRAFT approach is and why it's statistically proven to be more effective to guide kids toward the path of recoveryMany of the reasons why your child's addiction is actually NOT your faultWhy becoming an expert in self-care will always be the biggest gift to your childWhy your silver lining will almost always begin with connectionHow focusing on your child's strengths is powerful and not “going soft” or naiveConnect with Cathy: https://cathytaughinbaugh.com/Book: The Compassion AntidoteBook: Beyond Addiction: How Science and Kindness Help People Change Book: The Artist's WayResource: Drugfree.org

This week on Talk Recovery Radio Dr. Robert J Meyers discusses his book "“Motivating Substance Abusers to Enter Treatment: Working with Family Members” and many more books Dr. Meyers has written. About the Book: Filling a crucial need, this book presents Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT), a time- and cost-effective therapy program oriented to individuals who want to motivate a loved one to seek help. The authors' nonconfrontational approach teaches concerned significant others (CSOs) how to change their own behavior in order to reward sobriety, discourage substance use, and ultimately to help get the substance abuser into treatment. The CSO also gains valuable skills for problem solving and self-care. Step-by-step instructions for implementing CRAFT are accompanied by helpful case examples and reproducible. Where to buy the book: https://www.amazon.ca/Motivating-Substance-Abusers-Enter-Treatment/dp/1593856466 About Dr. Meyers Dr. Meyers has been in the addiction field for 39 years with 23 of those years being at the University of New Mexico. He is currently the director of Robert J. Meyers, Ph.D. & Associates and a Research Associate Professor Emeritus in Psychology at the University of New Mexico's Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addiction. He has been involved in over a dozen clinical trials funded by the National Institutes of Health, including three CRAFT trials, Project Match and the Clinical Trials Network Dr. Meyers began his work with the Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) in 1976. At that time he helped develop the first CRA outpatient procedures, which were used in the seminal study published by Dr. Nathan Azrin and colleagues in 1982. In the late 1990's Dr. Meyers helped design and evaluate the adolescent version of CRA (A-CRA). Dr. Meyers also developed the new innovative "intervention" program used to engage resistant substance abusers to enter treatment. This new intervention called Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT), an evidence-based protocol, has shown superior positive outcomes then traditional interventions styles in several randomized clinical trials. His CRAFT work has led Dr. Meyers and CRAFT to be one of the 14 featured segments of the Emmy Award-winning HBO Addiction series. Dr. Meyers has also been featured in Oprah magazine for his outstanding work using the Community Reinforcement Approach. Dr. Meyers Website: https://robertjmeyersphd.com/index.html

Addiction is a family disease and family members of people with addiction need help, too. Research shows that helping family members helps their loved one who has an addiction. We look at an approach that is more effective than an intervention or Al-anon to get family members into addiction treatment. It’s called CRAFT, or Community Reinforcement and Family Training. STORY: A book group turns into a support group for parents of addicted children. They turned away from "tough love" and, without knowing it, stumbled on evidence-based ways to help addicted family members access treatment. Also, we have an update on the chronic pain patient at the mini boot camp for pain, Kimberly. We check up with her a month after the program ended.

Dr. Robert Meyers, the lead developer of the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) approach for helping to engage resistant substance users into treatment, and to help the family system in the process, will discuss the creation of CRAFT, why it is so effective at helping families and how it helps engage people into treatment who are resistant.
My guest on this episode of the podcast is Dr Robert Meyers who has been in the field of addiction for the last 39 years. His father was a heavy drinker and caused a lot of problems in his family home. This caused Dr Meyers to go on to create an intervention program that is now used worldwide to engage resistant substance users and encourage them to enter treatment. The program is called Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) which focuses on the family recovery as a whole not just on the substance user.
